Great vid. As a KOI POND owner, I have a couple of tips. When you order a replacement tube (bulb), always buy two so you'll always have one on hand. Sometimes there can be manufacturing or shipping problems that make new tubes unavailable. I always plumb the UV last in the filter flow. Water goes through all of the filters first and then the UV. I have never had to clean a crystal tube.
Also had a koi pond..fully agree with what you suggest
Just back in the hobby after some years off! Looking at all the things I need. BRS rocks!!!
These are the best aquarium advice videos. No wonder you and your company are so successful. Thank you.
Every time I watch this video I want to give it a thumbs up; thank you!
Ryan and BRS - this was such an accurate, spot on informative video! Thank for doing such great social service!
Got the aqua 2000 hang on from y’all and love it! That paired with a sicce 2.0 is a great combo. Pump pulls from the sump and have the outlet going into the display. Very happy
Thanks for the video, fellas! I thought I was going to be upset with myself when you mentioned not getting a UV sterilizer with a wiper. Fortunately, it's going to be installed on a freshwater set up for our caiman lizards. Thanks again for the great content!
I got a unbranded UV with the used tank/ stand I bought. It uses a 24 W {G 23 socket} bulb. So hard to find, I bought 3 of them when I located some. I wish I had thought to plumb it into the return line, because I hate running an extra pump. Thanks for the info.
Thanks for sharing this great information.
why not hook up a dedicated pump with an apex to alternate flow rate through the UV at proper flow for bacteria for 2 hours then a flow rate for algae for 2 hours and so on????
That’s genius, would the mobius app be able to do that? Also is really a big deal if you have the UV water empty next to the main return pump, with the UV pump a distance away to get the new water as it comes in?
The warning for airbubbles. And correct way of water input saved me that problem 😊
🤔I’m with you guys , if you can afford it go buy one ,will only help rather than hinder👌 keep up the good work 😃🏴
Love the vids guys
Just got my 80w this week.
I have a small uv that fits in my nano overflow for 15gal I have on a timer set for about 30mins every other hour . The uv sits in water that’s not flowing fast . Things I have noticed since running the uv . My water is super clear. The bad algae cyno has diseappered . My clowns look brighter and coral colors have popped.
Hi! I'm new to reefing... I have a 4feet salt water tank. Currently FOWLR. Im using a Aqua medic 90 light system. I wanted a bit of help on how to adjust my lighting. Mainly the percentage of color spectrum. White+blue, royal blue, blue, red, purple, UV. Had issues with the settings I made and got algae and diatons. Any help would mean a lot!!
I got a jebao uv but only gonna use for my fallow period to keep bad stuff at bay. I just hate how expensive some UVs are.
What about Fluval UVC In-line clarifier? Does it fall under hobby grade or commercial grade? Is it effective?
I have a pond sterilizer on my 50 gallon aquarium :)).....I'm just silly like that :)
I have it on the return flow.... That size thing is true, had to think a bit where to hide it.....
God damn manual for it is the size of a notebook :))
@brstv What about one that is built into my canister filter i have it off because i dont understand how it works and dont want to ruin the cycle in tank. Currently a clownfish and springeri damsel toadstool hammer pulsing xenia and a green star polip. Im not sure if i should ever turn it on lol
Did you ever do another UV video that was mentioned in the end?
If i had to pick one, disease/parasite population control is a much better use case. If I want to use the sterilizer as part of my preventative measures, how often and how long should I run the UV?
I have never had issues with pods in mine. The adults are big and have a hard shell that protects them. The larvae are freeswimming and attracted to light. Why, in the wild, would copepod larvae be attracted to something that sterilizes them? They'll be fine lol
I have a coralife U V in the information book it says I can laid flat down will it make a air pocket inside its a coralife 12 × 36 watt rateed for 500 gallon tank is 220 fish with a 55 gallon sump thx you
What flow rate is best for discus....
If you have no infection speed up the flow through the sterilizer to treat algae etc.
This thing is gonna give your copepods a noce tan 😎
Is there a problem to oversize the UV sterilizer I mean like five times more than recommended?
I installed the Aqua Ultraviolet 40 watt I bought from you guys and has been running since I upgraded my tank. All fish where QT and my powder blue and Achilles tang have Ich
A UV sterilizer would not give your fish Ich. It's possible the ich was not completely irradiated in QT before putting them into the display tank.
Ich can come in on snail shells and even frags if it's in the egg stage
@@HBReefBros Yes I know they won’t and they don’t eradicate either. I was just sharing my experience that evening having a UV and going through QT things can still happen.
How about the 25 watt UV on my Reefer nano 28 gallons 0_0
Thanks for the video guys. What about Phytoplankton i dose for copepods. Will I be okay there? Will it damage the nutritional value of the phytoplankton for the copepods?
It will stop it from being able to reproduce, but won't kill it all together.
@@BRStv okay….. so if I’m dozing phyto regularly, no need to eliminate my UV sterilizer?
What do you guys think of the coral life twist uv light
Probably ok for small nano systems, but we feel that for most saltwater aquariums, the larger Pentair or Aqua UV sterilizers do a better job.
My 160 gallon, 100 gallon, and 120 gallon all have pentair UV sterilizers, the larger the better
Where do you get the orange UV holders/brackets on the side of those tanks.?
We have them for Pentair or Aqua UV sterilizers
Pentair > www.bulkreefsupply.com/uv-sterilizer-mounting-clamps-2-pack-orange-niche3d.html
Aqua UV > www.bulkreefsupply.com/aqua-uv-sterilizer-mounting-clamps-2-pack-orange-neat-aquatics.html
Got a question for ya guys, if you have a bare bottom tank that you can see the bottom from under the stand, would a uv light under the glass work?
You'd be damaging the good bacteria in the tank if you were to do that, so unfortunately, this wouldn't work in the way that you're probably envisioning
It helped my sick fish fast
I have a pentair 25 watt uv sterilizer. What pump should I use for my sterilizer? Thank you
That's going to depend a lot on where the pump is located, what kind of plumbing you're attaching to it, and where the UV is outputting to (sump vs display). If you have a moment, give us a call and we can discuss all of these variables and get you a good pump recommendation for your specific setup
For my 240 Gal aquarium plus sump, which Pentair UV would you recommend?
The 50 or 80w versions would do the trick. The 80w is very long, so depending on how much space you have, I may suggest going with the more compact 50w instead.
@BRStv - Saltwater Aquariums & Reef Tanks
I had a serious outbreak of Velvet in my reef tank. Then I seemed like I just could not rid of it, everything I tried, Quarantine Tanks, medications, fish less DT tank. Ever time I added to my DT the Velvet came back and wiped my fish out. I finally added a UV Sterilizer and within 4 month it was gone! I don't care what anyone says, UV Sterilizer will get rid of diseases.
I just purchased a 36 watt uv sterilizer I think from jebao, it’s on a 90 gallon with 20 gallon sump, I have no way to make a closed loop in my tank just the sump, is it still going to perform correctly? I purposely oversized it for this reason
While it won't be as efficient as a closed loop style, oversizing it will help with your particular installation. For that reason, I wouldn't lose sleep over it.
What time schedule would you recommend for green water?
We usually run our UV sterilizers 24/7. Check the manufacturer's flow recommendations. There is usually a higher flow rate for algae/bacteria.
So very confused, just ordered my 40w pentair from brs, and sizing pumps . In this video section like 13:50 to 15:00 we discus not running a loop in sump, and run off the return..wouldn't it need a pump still to push the water up through it and back out..? Wouldn't that be hard to regulate, slow for parasites, faster for algae . I am wondering can I plumb a pump in sump run water into it vertically on outside of my red sea 500 and have other end dump the sterilized water back into display ? So exit of water from uv literally just dumps into display
Should that pump be in my overflow chamber or return section, does that matter? Thanks!
I'm new and trying to figure this out too! It seems to me, if you pump the water from an upstream chamber of the sump (just after the filter socks), into the UV, then return it to a downstream chamber (the return chamber) of the sump, it would work fine and fully circulate through the whole system. Use a variable speed DC pump, and measure the flow from the hose that returns to the lower sump chamber by timing how long it takes to fill a 1 gal bucket and do the math. Then adjust the pump speed as necessary.
@@FreethinkerDave did you end up doing what you mentioned in your comment?
hey guys. about the beneficial bacteria you talked about, if a tank JUST FINISHED CYCLING and is ready for fish, is that too soon or still okay to add the UV? I've never known the answer to this. You partially answered it, but am wondering about this specific time?
You can add a UV sterilizer right away. Since most bacteria will live on the rocks, sand, and other surfaces of the tank, there is no issue starting it from the get-go
@@BRStv thanks u guys! you're the best!
So many people have algae issues so many people also have chaeto...
PLEASE.. do a video on properly removing & maintaining chaeto and using the 1 2 punch of dr Tim's refresh & waste away.. then the gel tabs for some maintanance and adding the chaeto back in.
I thought I was immune, well stocked tank w colonies not frags..healthy chaeto outcompeting... 40 watt pentair on return pump of 90 gal tank, at 1000 gph.. BUT...neglect and NOT FEEDING ENOUGH for a 2 month remodel..sent my tank downhill. (Essentially Weakened the chaeto while sending nutrients to absolute zeros.)Explain to people how that happens... alot will be surprised.
Could I just get two uv sterilizer one for fish health and the other to get rid of types of algea?
I think the jury is still out on that one. Ryan is running a dual UV setup like this on his 360, but it's hard to quantify the results.
Does a uv steriliser help reduce algae on the tank glass etc. ?
Assuming you have it set to the correct flow rate for algae, it can help reduce the need to clean the tank glass
What is the brand n model of that UV light in the video display? Tia
In the video, we feature AquaUV and Pentair sterilizers.
Hi
I have to take some cycled rock from my tank to drill some holes in it..Will the bacteria survive out of water? And for how long? Thank you.
As long as the rock stays damp, you should be ok. I'd suggest keeping a spray bottle filled with saltwater handy so that you can keep it wet and then just drill the holes as quickly as you can do safely.
@@BRStv Thanks a million 🙏 !!!
Hi can you please help me. I have added a uv ultra violet light yesterday and added melafix. 8 fish died and the rest are not looking well. I turned the light off and added salts. Please can you tell me what to do now? My poor fishes are struggling
Are there any signs of disease? Identifying the root cause is the first step because without that, we'll just be guessing at what to do next.
Do you consider the German Deltec to be a good UV ?
I can't say that we've used that one enough to have an opinion on it's performance.
Have a question here. To use a UV you have to choose if you want to use it for killing of protozoa or to sterlise the water. That is cos of the flow you need to select for each, to have fast or slow flow.
If my understanding is correct, can one person to have 2 Uv? One for faster flow and one for slower flow in the same tank to have both ? Will that work?
They mentioned that in early part of video but that its not economical for most people. You will be getting close to 1k range with UV and Pumps they recommend.
That's correct, you could technically run two, both at different flow rates. Like @Sly Expeditions mentioned, this is pretty expensive and not something that the average reefer would do.
Get a variable rate pump instead and change the rate of flow.
Will an under-rated sterilizer still be beneficial? I recently started up my new 300 deep dimension system (approx. 500 gallons total with sump) and am having a massive bacterial bloom.. At the moment though, I'm deal with some financial issues and can't really afford a massive one rated for a 500 gallon system.. If I bought a small one, would it at least help with my bacterial bloom?
It would certainly help to a certain degree, but it won't be as effective as a properly sized sterilizer.
@@BRStv Thanks for the info! I think a buddy of mine is gonna let me borrow his small one for a bit, but when I can afford it, I'm gonna look into the aquaUV 80 watt unit..
Hi, can i know dino consider as bacteria or protozoa?
dinos are considered a type of algae
Do you guys think the coral life one is like a toy one? I just bought one hoping it works. Starting to think it won't after seeing this.
The biggest thing is to have reasonable expectations for what you're going to get out of a small UV sterilizer. A small sterilizer isn't going to do much for a large system, so it's all about picking the right tool for the right job.
@@BRStv I have a 250 freshwater with stingrays. It says it's rated for a 250 but after seeing this video I'm skeptical
What kind of tank is the one in the background? I want to buy one.
red sea max :)
Do you have the model ?
Brs room tour
Can you get two sterilizers and use one for bacteria and parasites, then one for algae growth?
Yes, just make sure that each is set to the correct flow rate. Flow rate is crucial in UV sterilizer performance.
@@BRStv awesome! Thank you.
can uv light prevent algae in sand and live rock?
The thing about UV sterilizers is that they can only sterilize what passes through them. UV sterilizers will not necessarily help with existing algae on your sand or rock.
@@BRStv how long is a good time to run uv light? is it 24 hours straight or when the lights are off or on? 🤔🤔
@@Achi2567run them non stop for sure.
A UV sterilizer if properly used is a key piece of equipment to insure the health of your fish.
I bought a $40 one and it cleared up my tank in a week and my tank was green
Do you need a protein skimmer or a UV sterilizer, NO! But your tank will be healthier especially on top of water changes. We all have too many fish in our tanks to simulate the ocean. Probably better off with less fish in a glass cage.
Ugh this one hurts because I didn't want to watch it until I already ordered it and ran into most of the problems on this list.
I don't think it is correct to say that the UV sterilizer does not kill things, it just stops them from reproducing. I think you are confusing the different meanings of the word sterilize. In this case I believe we are using the medical term not the animal husbandry term. UV radiation is a form of high energy radiation that, among other things, destroys nucleic acids. This results in; the inactivation of viruses, the death of bacteria and other protozoa, and significant genetic damage and disruption to complex life, potentially enough to kill them.
yes UV sterilization is used in surgery, to sterilize tools. But the output is high enough and it is permanently under UV for about 1 hour. It is not passing trough a tube for one sec or less lol
Would you recommend T5 or T8 UV sterilizers. I would say T8 due to the higher output but please elaborate without generalizing that every tank is different. oh and Come on, Dude... You've never had it leak?
Wait. It could blind you to look at it? Shouldn't that be number 1!
Almost all UV sterilizers in our hobby are used in a housing, so looking at it would be difficult. That said, you're absolutely correct. DO NOT look directly at your UV light.
Why dont u just but like 4 uv lights and put it in the sump 😝

Saltwater hobby is expensive even more so if you buy cheap in the beginning and replace everything later. $20-$50 does not buy anything, that’s good. Even a tank of car gas we burn costs more than $50. Good beef is not cheap and cheap beef is not good. Study sites with experts, like BRS videos. Forums sometimes just spread myths and gossip or bad experiences.
