Being a new student trying to learn from videos alone for the time being, one of the things I've done is to posterize (and desaturate) the selfies I took in various lighting conditions to study the planes of the head and face.
Thank you...very useful...I use 30min a day sessions...after my regular job....I will try more charcoals and blocking shadows techniques...I find gouache as quick medium to practice than oils ....now we get Carandache gouache tablets....easy to use.
Seriously, this is so helpful. I'm also in art school and I'm struggling so much with the workload because I simply can't speed up. Thank you so much for this :)
As always, great information! So glad I joined Art Tutor a few months ago. I've learned much, and it has shown in the art I now produce. Thanks for providing such a great learning opportunity at an extremely affordable rate, Phil!
I love that unfinished look in concept artworks. Looks like it was done by someone who knows what they're doing and knows how they want their audience to view their works
Ha! I've had the same idea as in Tip5 a couple of days ago. For lack of a computer I work with my Cellphone, and I found it's necessary to lighten up the photograph first, to get the best posterized effect; (perhaps thats different on a computer)
Thank you for a short, informative and good video! :) I don't think I can do some of those things though, like not finishing and leaving things looking a bit... well, scrappy around the edges. I do that sometimes for sketches, but I don't call them fully finished artwork either. When I do fully finished artwork it's from edge to edge and as nice as I can get it. However, I really felt that the blocking in the darkest shadows first technique might be really helpful. So I'm gonna try that out, even if it'll be very weird I'm sure at the beginning since I usually work the other way round. XD On a side note, I love your English. :)
Thanks Syster. Leaving the edges unfished is down to personal preference over style. Blocking in the shadows first is also a great way to improve the overall value composition of your drawing / painting too. Doesn't work for every medium (such as watercolours) but is great for charcoal, graphite and the opaque painting ediums.
Good question Gloria! I find it depends very much on the image you're working with. And there a few images (I haven't figured out why or what) that don't seem to posterise very well. Just play about with the setting and go with what works for that image
My teacher is absolutely swamping us with homework and I just want to get it done without it looking rushed ;-;. 1 week into art school and i have a crapton of stuff due
Phil , would you say that your background was more to do with Graphical / design - approaches to art work !?!. An unknown to me !!! So what background do you personally have in producing your works , basically ?!? I feel the viewers may benefit from this insight as it would discipline one in to choosing which way they were going to go ! for example is it -- Design , Graphic art , fine art etcetera , as all these choices have different emphasis on art production styles and so - overall focus , as you would know Phil . Thank you for the possibility of fulfilling this request as referred to here . So to be posted for example - possibly - on the You Tube Art Tutor site - somewhere , sometime soon as at 31/5/21 when this comment was added , hey !
I feel like the point about carbon pencils makes sense, but it would be completely negated by ABSOLUTE LOATHING of any and all smudges, which charcoal does in spades no matter what you do, I would just waste massive amounts of time trying to get smudges out of highlights.
Maureen Firstly it’s wonderful to hear someone from Manchester I really loved your video It has so much useful information as a relative beginner of older age group. I have never painted as a child or adult until my seventies. I wonder if you teach, in classes in Manchester.
For crying out loud, this cannot be taught. It is simply for the naturally gifted. He just wants you to sign up for his courses and give him money. The simple reason I'm giving up watching these stupid youtube videos, and giving up art in general. It is simply talent, why can't people except this???
4 years into art school and not a single teacher ever told me any of this... Well thanks I guess
I know right!
1. isolated study
2. Draw with charcoal and carbon
3.unfinished look
4.block in shadows
5.try posterizing
6.have time limit
I have an art exam tomorrow and I have 11 drawings to complete in less than 24hours

Definately useful for me.
You mentioned a step by step guide to posterizing images using pixler but I don’t see it in the description. Where is that located?
All great tips. I think I'll try out using one of those carbon pencils. Can anyone tell me what type of paper is best for carbon pencils? Thank you.

sUpeR! merci beaucoup very much! ( ... and may I suggest sth.? ... a short recap in the box below would be very welcome ...! )
Thanks sir
When posterizing, what number do you recommend? I would guess 5 or 6 to correspond to the number of values normally used in drawing/painting?

ArtTutor.com Thanks! That's what I generally do. :-)

I have to work on design for something, and I really need to hurry.

It was subtitles half all the way but it wasn’t full all through, only half. Really disappointed…
