Hey guys, I think sketching and drawing is such an important skill to learn, so I decided to share some beginner techniques with you.
This tip will help you get started on your way to becoming great at sketching and drawing. Try it out!
Note: I want to thank Feng Zhu for all the amazing things he's taught artists like myself over the years, and this video is partially inspired by his video. He is a big inspiration of mine, and it's why you might see recurring themes in my own videos. :)

I like how he said practice makes progress not perfect
That's right.
@@WalidFeghali You know now This makes sense Telling children early on partice makes progress Instead of partice makes perfect is in accuracy to experience.
The ‘practice makes perfect’ phrase kind of annoys me smh
He said it the moment i finished reading your comment lmao
Yeah I like this guy when he said make progress not perfect
“Just sketch have fun.”
“Practice makes progress, not perfect.”
Best things said in this video
Great attention. :)
I'm gonna write those in every sketchbook
True
Right.I find its result
Drawing is a frame of mind, a loving embrace if you will
Best tip I ever heard: don't compare yourself with others, just compare yourself today with who you were yesterday.
Good one
Yes!
@Thanos's Dick cool - you're in a place many never reach :-)
@Thanos's Dick if you have patience many things are possible; i started drawing 5 years ago, at the age of 57; my drawings today are way ahead of those when i started; i'm still nowhere near where i want to be; Good Luck, my friend
@Thanos's Dick of course, that's just according to my birth certificate; at heart i'm kind of like a 9 year old kid :-)
My worst obstacle is my inner critic. I see other artists work and immediately lose confidence in mine. I would draw a drawing and instantly hate it because it's not what I wanted it to be. I am having so much difficulty getting through this.
Same here
Here's a solution - simply copy them when you are done turn down the phone add more details to it. Open it next day you will be proud of your sketch.
Rough drafts. Reference research. Repetition.
I can definitely relate, and that has definitely been my biggest roadblock as an artist. To me, Peter Han has been a huge inspiration. I’m paraphrasing, but basically he often tells his students to remember that “this isn’t your last drawing” (unless you make it your last) so it doesn’t matter how it turns out. And it’s true. In the beginning stages, it’s really just about doing it.
Every master began as a student.
I vividly imagine my future self flipping through this old sketchbook and laughing a bit at my old sketches, proudly comparing it to my newer drawings and feeling good about the progress I made, which I wouldn't have if I gave up because these old ones looked bad. They say visualization is important.
Every sketchbook I buy, I write "10000 Bad Paintings" on the cover, to remind me of what my first art teacher at university said to me-- "Everyone has 10,000 bad paintings in them. The sooner you start, the sooner they'll be out of your system." I know that's not an original line, but its the right attitude IMHO-- always draw, every day if you can. It's helped me a lot.
Super cool. W.
thank you for sharing this, im gonna keep this in the back of my head for when i get demotivated !!
or just sit down and think, I'm going to do this till I'm contempt. That way you force yourself to constantly analyze the proportions / shapes / contrasts etc.
Thanks , thats a great idea!
thnx for for sharing. definitely golden!
I dont know about western countries but here in major part of Asia, there is this trend/practice of doing quick sketch where you sketch anything (mostly human figure) from real life within a minute a two. And we do this in a massive number like, 50 to 200 per day so in universities, students usually do around 6000 to 10000 quick sketches per semester so what this does is basically co-ordinates your hand to eye connection, makes you a better observer and generally after so many sketches you kind of develop a muscle memory for basic sketches.
Definitely, great tip. :) Best, W.
Hello! We do the same in Croatia in art highschool and academy, it's called croquis drawing.. 😊
No our basic schools thinks it better if we learn what a mean, median, and mode stuff were never going to use then develop useful traits like attention to detail and hand eye cordination.
heavy emphasis on gesture drawing i take it, guess i will start at 30
I lack the courage to sketch 50 horrible blobs that don't resemble human beings every day :(

Me: OK, time to draw a rock.
Also me: draws something that resembles boba fett.
Also me: Cool! Looks like boba fett, I should make it more detailed!
Also me : Details turn it into a rock.
@Warbel Haha 😂
Proof that improvisation is a good skill of any artist
Incontrovertible evidence
that Boba Fett rocks. XD
*He's cracking the code.*
@@kikiniki4490 so draw boba fett and it will start to look like a rock. Add more details, then it will become boba fett next.
*_In order to be a good artist/sketcher, first you have to be a bad one._* Then you practice, and that makes you a good one. Step by step you develop the muscle memories and the inspiration and passion and most of all, the skill; and that's where your creativity comes from! Creativity is the expression of mastery of a skill! It is not innate!
Exactly!!! Best, W.
The fool is the precursor for the saint
NeonsStyle this comment motivated me just now when I was having an art block and getting demotivated about my bad noob art.... But I'll try harder . Than,s
This gave me some motivation!!! Thx.
My passion was drawing and i start'ed wheb i was nine, the only problem i like to do is people
The challenge in this video:
Use a sketchbook, a pencil and an eraser
Keep it simple
Don't worry about results, just sketch and try to have fun with it :)
Try to draw 30 minutes to 1h a day
1. week subjects:
- trees, plants and roots
-Rocks and mountains
-clouds
2. week subjects:
-crystals
-animal skulls
-sea creatures
Using reference is encouraged!
Thanks for the great summary! Best, W.
don't compare your art to an artist that have been drawing for years
keep drawing
True. Because if you do that, then you’re just gonna be setting unrealistic expectations for yourself.
... for years
‚Don’t worry about the results‘
That is way easier said than done
Schattenfluch 001 is you just start to draw, and don’t expect anyone to see or ever, then not really.
It definitely is. But your willingness to improve and just be OK with making mistakes makes up for all of that. :) Best, W.
Stick with it man, and if possible, draw every day. You have to learn to see your "bad results" , mistakes and "failures" as "just a normal part of the road to getting good". Don't get frustrated, angry or depressed, try to just stay positive and simply carry on. Once I learned to see things this way, I swear mate I feel like I had an epiphany, and after 4 months my improvements were bigger than ever! Also remember that ALL the greatest artists started like us, just beginners with no experience but they didn't let the failures defeat them!
You can get where you want to be, just hit that sketchbook every day!
I have so many fancy sketchbooks that are all completely empty because they are too nice to ruin :'D
Haha that's exactly why you should buy cheap ones! :D It makes it so much easier to just sketch and not care. ^^
when i was at uni doing an illustration course my tutor would always get us to scribble on the first page of a new sketchbook, like just go crazy on it XD that way when we got to the second page we dident mind drawing in it and making mistakes as the first page was the biggest mess that would be found in the sketchbook.
+Walid Feghali yess, buy cheap ones! I always ended up sketching on printer paper so I wouldn't ruin my sketchbooks and my drawings were actually better because I didn't care lol, fancy sketchbooks that you won't use is a lot of wasted money and hold you back because you're afraid! ; ^ ;
Starting somewhere in the middle of a sketchbook and filling it up randomly seems to work for me. There's no clear progression from start to finish then, but its like a little surprise on every page :)
Lady Kurai hahaha
He is telling the truth, I started drawing about month ago, I'm not at the level I want to be but I am alot better then I was a month ago
That's fantastic to hear Edgar! Keep it up. Best, W.
I am a lot better 💚
I started 4 years ago, and I’m a whole lot better than I used to be. But I’m still nowhere near where I want to be. It’s frustrating, but I think that’s with most art forms
Me too! I started drawing again just 2 weeks ago and im definitely seeing progress. Still so far from where I want to be but we’re getting there!
hey dude! you might not see this but i'd love to know how you're going right now! did you improve any more since you made the comment?
to anyone else reading this: don't give up! sure, it's frustrating when your drawing is nothing like how you imagined in your head but with practice and dedication you can do it!
I tried drawing sea creatures the second week, but my sketchbook got all soggy.
I hate when that happens.
I tried to draw a volcano but my sketchbook got incinerated.
tried to draw alcohol but my damn sketch book got drunk
Lol i tried drawing kratos but he brutally murders my 20 $ sketchbook >:(
DONT put the FISH in the SKETCHBOOK
Even his rock turned out so good.......my rock looked like a hamburger 😂
Same 😛
Same 😭😭😭😭
Made my day .... Thanks
Well, now you know how to draw a hamburger. :)
My rocks look like eggs D:
There are no mistakes here. Just some happy accidents ;)
You got that perfectly right. Best, W.

I got depression and I really struggle with art now ... Every time I started to paint, it hit me so much. My head started to hurt and I got blackouts. I also lost fun, patience and self-confidence. Art used to be my passion ... now it's my dark emotional release, which is not bad at all. My body just doesnt work with me and after every painting I made, I felt horrible, so I stopped. Now that I've seen this video, I feel very comfortable and confident. Even if I cannot paint big artworks anymore, I will try not to think about it so much and rather start all over again to build myself up slowly. I will be patient with my body. I will try to love and live with all the power of my heart. From now on I will focus with my thoughts, words and actions to a goal and tackle things with enthusiasm.
I'm very grateful for it, you all help me a lot !
😇♥️♾♥️
Art is my anti-depressant. Whether just coloring someone else's llneart in a fun, comic-book kind of way, or following this guy's tutorials and painting epic vistas. Just following my art heart and doing something to make me or someone else smile... makes my day. if not week.
Keep going, rebuild. You'll get there. It can be a struggle.
(Not joking about the anti-depressant thing. My depressive episodes used to be sooo bad until I got back into art. Now, so much better. And they lessen with each improvement in my abilities. Every lesson learned. And don't beat yourself up about any mistakes. Try to embrace them, use them, learn from them.)

Dude stay strong and find your way!
It's really important to separate practice and make a good one drawing / painting. :) It's hard, I know I'm learning drawing myself this year more seriously, but it's really important and it's not the same way to do the things. Now than I accept making a loooot of mistakes and a few good ones, not with the same feelings, I feel really better and I want to continue. When I really can't I make something really simple and just take markers you know. Try to more listen you and what you need, when you need it. Good painting! :)
Me before watching this video: *Art block*
Me after: *Inspired And has so many ideas*
Love to hear that. Cheers !
Omg same i wanted to start a buisness in art soon but was so discouraged! Then i watched this video and it really helped clear my head! Good luck to you!
Getting art tips from Oberynn Martell is pretty great
:D Oberyn Martell indeed... I CTRL+F searched for word Oberyn... and Voila! The same thought we had... :D
I know right. 😂
Don Giola Thats what i was thinking too!
I just realized he looks exactly like him oh wow.
His eyes dont look that bad dude.
You literally just made drawing so much simpler for me. I always worry about how perfect it has to look or what do I draw that will help me get better, or how is this supposed to look. You literally being an experienced artist just relieved so much pressure on me worrying on how to even progress. I'll definitely be watching you a lot 😊
I'm very happy to hear that. :) Best, W.
I'm back to say thank you. I used to sketch a lot of just random things when I was in school, despite having absolute no knowledge of drawing techniques, I was okay at it and I enjoyed doing that.
Recently I've officially started to learn drawing, and somehow the thought of just sketching things again never crossed my mind.
Immediately after watching this I went ahead and sketched some bamboo trees, actually got pretty good results. I'll absolutely keep doing this everyday from now and that's all thanks to your advice.
Wow! I came here for the tutorial but I learn so much from all your comments!
Awesome to hear you're enjoying it. :) Best, W.
Me: oh, I can definitely draw a rock. That's easy.
Me: *accidentally draws a T-Rex* damnit!!
Extra Email just go with the flow
Just pretend it's a rock shaped like a dinosaur 😂
Oh my god this cracked me up so much
Extra Email i can totally relate ahha
Going with the flow is your worst enemy. DRAW THE ROCK. Accidents are good for abstract artists but for commercial artists, accidents shouldn't be taken lightly.
Thanks guys for your kind words and your concerns. I realize what Feng Zhu is saying in his video is very similar. If you feel this is too similar and unfair to FZD, and would like me to take it down, I will. I really didn't want to offend anyone. However, I'd love to add something new to it by stressing working with more traditional mediums rather than just going digital, give an exercise that I think can really help you, and perhaps give a little different angle from my own experience and advice showing how I sketch some of these subjects.
Best of wishes and luck to your artistic journeys
Just dont quit it, im drawing for one week now and im alone get to this conclusion too, so your video desrves a room even if someone posted something similar before :)
I find your video much more enjoyable to watch, please don't take it down!
carol-draws and evangelion4ever, thank you and I'm happy you're getting something good out of it. :)
I've seen both videos, and, with respect to the master Feng Zhu, I don't think he is the first artist ever to suggest that beginners practice daily and draw simple subjects from life like rocks and trees. In fact, I have a 3D Total Sketch Workshop Landscape book in which the first 2 subjects are...rocks and trees. Those things are just the simplest parts of a more complex whole. Also, Feng Zhu's video went into considerably more detail, included bullet points, reference, and more complex subjects like skulls and animals. Anyway, I think you're fine. Nice video.
Yes, his video was up to 1 hour, where he could really go into the nitty gritty of things. I wanted to give artists this one exercise to improve quickly and not relying on digital software and tablet - literally anyone can do it. Thanks for your insight!
my motto: I haven't seen it till I've drawn it.
Oh damn that's actually pretty good
I might steal your motto--
Yeah... Can I like make that my life's goal?
Woah you are the smartest being I have ever heard
What does that even mean?!
I love cheap sketchbooks much more because I’m not afraid of ruining it

I am Brazilian and I think this was the easiest video in english to understand for me. Thank you so much for helping with both my english and my drawing. Hope you understand my english. :-D
Your english is great and I'm happy to have you here! :) Best, Walid
Yeah, Walid is very good to teach and have a very clear english to listen. I'm Brazilian too. Cheers from Sao Paulo. :)
Cheers from Santa Catarina :D
Eu estava sentido a mesma coisa enquanto via o video. Me surpreendi em ver o mesmo pensamento vindo de um BR tbm. ele fala bem calmo e limpo e sem expressão/giria, quem dera todos os gringos fossem assim. haha.
Your English is great.
Excellent video! A lot of beginner artists get hung up on drawing or painting complex subjects and get frustrated when the outcome isn't what they expect it to be. Exercises like these are amazing ways of improving observational skills and, as you mentioned, building up confidence, which are both essential. It's SO important to keep making time for drawing throughout our artistic journeys, no matter what our medium of preference is. Thanks for this!
Erika Lancaster You're so right, Erika!! I'm happy it resonates with you. :)
I can relate to this, im going to try to be as confident as I can with my drawings and draw everyday and see what the outcome is!
then again: the most important thing is to draw something you enjoy. You shouldn't force yourself to draw something that bores you to death.
Excellent video 💚
Exactlyyyyy!!! This is what I've been searching my whole life. I never had an art teacher. So, this kind of guidance was what I was lacking.
Those rocks are better than anything I’ve drawn in my life😂
Haha, you can do it too!! :) Keep at it. Best, W.
What I've really been having trouble with is the fact that I'm blinded by my goals in drawing; There's this picture in my head that must be expressed on paper- yet that picture is far beyond my current capabilities. In having the fear that I could be practicing the wrong skills by drawing random objects, I end up drawing nothing at all and stagnating. All the while, I see art all around me that looks amazing. Instead of being inspired, I am discouraged.
Thus is the beginner's self perpetuating cycle that ceases all development. How do you escape?
Don't focus on that go at your own pace and have fun with it. Cause the people your watching had to go through that stage where you are now to reach where they are currently
I feel it
Bro same tho, it got to a point where I started getting jealous of them...And now I’m absolutely Jealous of EVERYTHING!!😥😥😥 I don’t know how to overcome this pain...but then I recently got inspiration from this artist...(of course still jealous of them) and now I fear that I’m copying their art style or something...😥
@@aanight what artist btw?

And I'm honestly mortified about the prospect.
But it's positivity and support from people like you who make me not want to hide and stop, who inspire me to persist, even if I found your videos just half hour ago.
Thank you.
Thanks for your great words, and I'm happy to hear I can inspire somewhat. Just focus on what you love, eh. :) Best, W.
Still drawing?
Best teaching lesson i have seen so far.... i am a beginner, i started with human figures and faces, which was so difficult for me to draw. This video reminded me to start with easy, try making my own designs, experiment with lines and shapes.
The soundtrack was so soothing made me relax and think.
Happy to hear these words. :) Stay tuned for more. Best, W.
Great video, I heard something years ago that motivated my art journey. " your personal sketchbook is for the artist to get the bad ideas out of the way".
thank you so much for this Walid! i am now sketching and having fun!!! im a complete beginner so it was frustrating for me but you and this video helped me sooooo much you have no idea bro.
you are a true inspiration keep up the amazing work.
im so hyped because im sketching and actually having fun!
I’m a recent subscriber so I haven’t seen very many of your videos, so I’ve been kinda binge watching them and stumbled on this little gem.
What I love so much about this video is how you point out that other artists shouldn’t compare their art, to you and yours as they are on a different skill level than you. I rarely see other artists mention this important piece of advice in videos which is sad. So it makes me really happy to see someone actually point this out. Not everyone is on the same skill level of drawing. ❤️
Bro your smile in the beginning really helps me to encourage me to draw and your kind attitude as well.. you got a new SUBSCRIBER.
Love your stuff Walid, I think Evenant has been the most useful source for improving my skills. This sure sounds like a fake testimony but it's all truth.

I think the best tip I got was my architecture professor used say “be patient with yourself, and fail just fail” they seem to universal tips, still love hearing them.

This video is full of great advice, and takes nothing away from Feng Zhu's somewhat similar video. Quite in fact what you've done is shine a light on Zeng, a RUclipsr I might not have come across otherwise. He is now wealthier by at least one subscriber, and all thanks to you! Forget the haters, this is your style and your advice - regardless of how many countless others have offered ideas in a similar vein. Keep pumping out videos, they're not redundant at all and are certainly helping people like myself! Thanks for all that you do, Walid.
This is why I do this! Thank you for your kind words.
I like the honesty of this video and not alot of people draw and explain so well.
Dude I just needed those first 2 minutes SO MUCH! You opened my eyes! I appreciate it so much!

hey , geheimer deutschen Treff in den Kommentaren
When I try and use reference it just turns into me copying the picture
Nothing wrong with copying the picture. You're still drawing.
As long as u don’t trace it, and claim it as your own, then it still counts as drawing. If you copy the same picture over and over, u even end up training your muscles to make it, and u can eventually do it without a reference.
Thanks for making me feel better about myself :)

Thank you for the good advice to get better at drawing. And I like the " practice makes progress".
In art you need to develop a "software" inside your mind with knowledge about perspective ,lights and shadows. A second "software" is required to put what's in your mind onto the work surface (hand muscles training). Both need practice. Also there are things in art you can't explain ,they must be felt by the one learning.
You sound really professional
Hi Walid Feghali, thank you for the tips. I used to draw a lot when I was younger and just recently started drawing again thanks to your video. My question is what do I draw after the 2 weeks to continue with my progress? I've been drawing a lot of trees and sea creatures, sharks mostly, but my second week is almost up and I want to take my progress further. Thank you
I really appreciate your tips and enjoy your confident and calm delivery. Subbed !
I haven't been drawing a lot lately but this video made me want to grab some paper and start sketching again. Thanks!
Hmm, I'll try.
