    This explains the issue I always had with most 'shapes' tutorials & tips.
    I always felt like something was missing because (to a degree) the shapes seemed almost arbitrary, I still struggled to understand the subject's structure and perspective.
    Finally someone talks about the connection between 3D composition and 2D simplification.
    Thank you!

    • @walterchamberlain9052
      @walterchamberlain9052 Год назад +3

      ytsiMMisty, I've had the same problem with "shapes" construction. We're told: "Break down the basic shapes - there's a square there. There's a triangle and a circle in that bit. Now just refine it down into the details." But it's not a square and a triangle and a circle. It's a body. My brain can't make the leap from rectangle to torso. Whether I try to sketch "freehand (not shapes), or whether I try to construct using shapes, the sketch still comes out more or less that same (which in my case is pretty bad).
      I will say, though, that using shapes might help with getting the proportions more correct.
      Peace

    I've been drawin since I was 8 years old. So 12, almost 13 years now! And these are some pretty helpful tips! Another tip I can give you if you usually sketch traditionally: Use different pencils for different sketching!!! I tend to lose myself in the fun of sketching a lot and what I end up with is basically a final drawing...but it's in pencil.
    To prevent that. Take a pencil that seems it needs some sharpening, DONT SHARPEN IT and do the sketching with that! That way you'll also have a harder time adding details so then maybe you wont want to do them because of the t h i c c lines. At least that's my case haha.
    I usually use that for rough sketches. I use rough sketching just to find shapes; to get basic anatomy done for example. No details. Just shapes. Then if I want it to be a bit of a refined sketch I usually take my mechanical pencil and add a few details ontop BUT WITH A VERY LIGHT HAND. Then that's usually it for me cause I like to paint in acrylics.
    But Jazza's video has more info on how to move onto the inking process so watch that part again!

    I’d also like to add that the “automatic drawing technique” in which you hold the pencil loosely and just allow your mind to unhinge and begin drawing...whatever is a good way to “stretch before you sketch”. I actually teach automatic drawing techniques at a local art school and it’s amazing how much better drawings become when people relinquish the pencil death grip. Just my 2B cents.

    I'm a self taught artist, and after 30 years, I've been trying to learn some of the fundamentals to finally address some of the areas I'm weaker in. I still enjoy going right in and drawing, but I'm actually seeing improvement when I sketch out the shapes and construction lines first and combining it with what I already know.

    This is great!!!! I always see tutorials on Instagram that are just super short tutorials like this (limited time, so not enough to go in depth like this video but they still get the point across) and people just whine that there’s no rules to art and that they can do whatever they want.
    When yes in theory there’s no rules to art, but they’re just trying to make your drawing better and your life easier! You have to learn what “rules” there are so that you can break them properly. I struggle with sketching so much so I try and absorb everything I can when it comes to sketching. People are too afraid of constructive criticism and don’t want to take actual advice.

    Could you do a tips and tricks on clothes and armor? That’s my downfall when drawing

    • @thebatman6201
      @thebatman6201 3 года назад +21

      Different cloth weight differs from fabric to fabric.. and therefore they all have different levels of stiffness when resting on the body. Think denim vs silk.
      Does the fabric catch the air? Or does it breathe? Think parachute vs napkin
      Practice drawing curved lines and giving them different bends to imply that weight.
      Most folds typically lead back to one major spot.. like the elbow or knee. Loose fabric also creates folds when hanging.
      For armor... look up armors. The pieces that make up a full set.
      Armor isnt skin tight. Make it bulky. remember they have padding underneath

      Actually i believe most artists are self taught. Not many go and say "yeah im gonna take art classes" out of nowhere. Many start drawing in their childhood or teenagehood and discover talent there. From there only some continue depending on passion in art. But still the majority i believe. Its funny to think how repetition and practice alone teaches yourself better than any teacher and a young age of 12 with a ton of drawing practice you can already draw very complex stuff.
