    Summary of this Video

    Something else I’d recommend to beginner artists: DRAW FROM LIFE. References are nice when you want to draw something specific, but to truly challenge yourself and improve your drawing skills, drawing from life is the way to go for beginners. Photos have a flattening effect that is actually detrimental to developing your skills as it’s already translated 3-D into 2-D when that should be your job as the artist. Draw from observation consistently and you’ll see your art improve tremendously.

I'm in 9th grade, and I have art this year, I have always liked to draw, I'm ok but I only draw like cartoonish things, like I don't draw realistic things like people, I attempted it once and it turned out ok but I need more practice and skill to learn about the shading, but even that I got from a reference

    Its based on perspective. Dont see it as tedious time consuming work. See it as a passion,the love of your life and what gives you hope and reason for living. Thats when it becomes something so much more than just many hours of work. For example watching movies you enjoy for many hours wouldnt seem like work because you enjoy it. Thats not say making art isnt hard work (its very hard,im an artist myself). But, just change your perspective and look at it differently. Ive changed how i view it and its changed my life.

    Im at the point where anything in my comfort zone looks great...anything outside of it, shit. My main problem is perspective. I can draw damn near anything well that doesn't involve too much perspective, but like a superhero facing forward with one knee up, I just cant get it to look right to save my life. So what I am currently doing is just forcing myself to repeatedly draw something im bad at, trying different approaches, until I can consistently get it right. I drew a lot as a kid through highschool and even started college as an art major, like you, I focused on my comfort zone, but I think I really missed out not finishing art school from a learning perspective in art (not from an income perspective, lol). The thing I hated myself for is I felt I abandoned my life long dream...and kind of quit art as a means to not think about it, had I remained dedicated to doing art in my spare time, I can only imagine how good I would be now. I finally dedicated myself (at 37) to draw every day, even if it is a quick 5 minute sketch. Its just frustrating to have non-artists think you are great and feel like a fraud, because you know you are like the highschool JV team compared to a professional team when it comes to serious artists.

I'm still not able to draw 1:1 realistic human head, but I actually drawing the scull like 2000 times, whenever I got bored, made my sketches look much better and even my comic drawing style has spawned from thousands of realistic and manga sketches I've been doing so far. I personally think, that you should do the lineart with an alcohol based pen or just a regular old ink pen. It will make your drawings pop out so much (coming from my personal experience).

Improvement however comes from mistakes and learning from them.....mistakes only come from drawing and drawing and drawing. And more drawing. Frequently I keep finding myself not satisfied with most of the artwork that I do, and I don’t really know what type of art is best for me like realistic or cartoon-like. This makes me keep thinking “Am I actually good at art or do I not have the talent” and I just haven’t known where to start. There have been multiple times where I actually was really thinking of just giving up on art, quitting the classes I take at school and just leave it for dead. But recently I’ve found your channel and another person’s channel that has really helped me, and I have basically been trying to “start again” in my art skills and start right over. I gotta say that I just don’t think I’d ever be able to do as good in art as you do, but I really appreciate the advice from someone like you who knows the stuff so I can get better, so thank you so much.

    Great video! Man I love your drawings so much. Your style is very unique. Also I definitely agree, I don't really like drawing realistically. There just isn't any uniqueness imo. If you're going to draw exactly the same as the reference, I'd rather just look at the reference lol

    Just recently discovered your channel and am loving it. I have watched a few of your videos so far and plan on watching (many) more. Your artwork is enviable! So much of what you've said here is exactly my story. I drew all of the time but lacked many of the fundamentals. My drawings were often good but not quite right. I stopped drawing consistently for a long time and am now trying to pick it up again. -The right way, this time. Thanks for the insights you are sharing with us.

    So nice to hear about people drawing for drawing's sake, because it's fun. These days youtube and other places are filled with people who only draw to share their art, so they in turn can get praise. I asked someone promoting sharing art, if they shared it purely for criticism, so they could learn from betters and and improve themselves. They were like "...what? Uh sure criticism can be good too." They hadn't even considered that part when thinking about sharing their art. Because their hobby isn't really art, their hobby is getting praise. Many, if they learned that no one else would ever see their drawings, then they would stop drawing instantly and forever, because what would be the point if others couldn't see it and they won't get praise

    Oh yes, I really can relate to all of this!
    At first I was real happy when I discovered a that I actually COULD draw - without touching a pencil in over 40years (I'm 51).
    But after a while that same frustration crept in! I'd expected progressing steadily. But my expectations paralised me totally.
    At some point I realized that the end product should not matter to me ! I should simply draw as much as I can. THAT, and ONLY that, brings me further. Unsuccessful drawings bear the most learning potential. Repeating a drawing several times (in less time) is hard to do, but very helpful.
    BUT I hardly get to watch you anymore, which us a shame. But I had to choose between you drawing, or me drawing =o)

    That was a pretty cool original drawing you completed Mr. Beardshaw. I can see the use of two point perspective, and I or anyone else can create buildings similar to the ones you have in the background with a basic understanding of 2 point perspective. How you came up with the buildings in the foreground though....wow! Very impressive.

A square with a triangle on top? What is the chest shaped like? Screenshot some reference images that are really basic to help you understand what shapes go where

    • @adhdhikaru
      @adhdhikaru 5 лет назад

      If you’re talking about a mechanical pencil (the pen with graphite) vs a traditional wooden pencil, it honestly depends on preference. With a traditional pencil you can get more variety in your lines and can use that to your advantage for things like shading. If you like a more uniform, almost structured look with very little line variation, or just don’t like sharpening a pencil, then I would go for a mechanical pencil.
      I personally use both, it just depends what kind of look I’m going for and what I have on hand.

    • @yeobo
      @yeobo 5 лет назад +1

      sadly i thought this for numerous years of my life and befriended an artist and saw how good he was i was always so impressed by how talented he was like it was a gift that the circles flow from his pencils and his hand movements when sketching, i always loved drawing but thought i would never be good at it, and stopped and just admired, until i got into digital art 2 months ago and i finally understand its a process, its work, time consuming but such an amazing creative outlet

    • @vincemincevince
      @vincemincevince 5 лет назад +2

      yeobo yep just focus more on doing the art and try not to worry about what other people are doing. think of it as a skill more than a talent and you will get there

    • @npc6817
      @npc6817 5 лет назад

      oh no, natural talent is very much a thing, I had lots of it and let me tell you, it isn't worth shit.
      it makes you overconfident, sets standard way above your capabilities and its only good for holding you back in the end.
      people with "natural talent" either give up or must work twice as hard than """"average"""" people to get what they want.
      so if you have no talent consider yourself lucky, you got way more luck than those who do
