I think I mentioned in an earlier comment that I saw that double page spread in progress. His pencils were as careful and precise as blueprints. The yellowing may be because he had that particular drawing framed on his wall for a while. And he drew it on spec, in his spare time, between shorter jobs, with no publisher lined up. When I visited he was working on the Captain Stern piece that ended up in Heavy Metal at the same time, and showed us the Alex Nino book that Christopher Enterprises had sent him prior to A Look Back, which was in the works, and did have a lot of cool Frankenstein plates, including some pencils.

It took him 7 years time to complete the work. You are right he did it in his spare time.

Wow, what an Artist Bernie was. He is in the upper echelon of The Best of the Best Masters of all Time. I am an Artist Myself and find Wrightson to be a True Inspiration.
Real cool of you Rich to make these videos.

Will watch later tonight, but this is one of the things I would put on the "Mount Rushmore" of art for me. Bernie was firing on all cylinders and created some absolute masterpieces. I wish they'd quit farting around release that Artist Edition already though. I managed to pick up the 1st edition used on Amazon a few years back and to my surprise when I opened the package the book was signed by Wrightson on the cover. I paid less than $10 total for it at that time. Looked like it had come from an estate sale, there was a personal library stamp on the inside page. Really such a great book. You ever use that Crescent illustration board, Rich? I saw the back of the big cover piece that just sold for a mill and it's Crescent, hot press, #200 illustration board, they still sell it. I have some coming from DBlick. Apparently Wrightson sold this cover to someone in the 80's for $35,000 and he's held onto it this whole time until the auction, nice little return of that investment, ha.

He used a Guilot 291. I have some and they are soft. Like inking with a nib made of toilet paper and hope. I know what you mean about seeing the actual art. I was lucky enough to go to a Disney exhibit at the New Orleans museum years ago. They had the original drawings of Snow White, Sleeping Beauty and others. It was surreal seeing those original works. I could even see the eraser marks.

Is anyone is interested in checking out sequential artists who mix illustration into the mix like Rich mentioned, there’s a couple manga artist that do something like that. Kentaro miura does a lot of really rendered drawings in his manga berserk. Same thing with Takehiko Inoue and his manga vagabond. Both series have some really awesome artwork.

This popped up in my YT feed again for some reason. Crazy this video is 4 year old already and they STILL haven't announced anything past the "coming later this year" from SDCC in 2019. Maybe 2024 is the one. LOL.

When he did his tight pencils do you think he would figure out what type of rendering he was going to do? Or did figure out lighting and rendering as he inked?

I absolutely love this classic style! And I totally agree that having artists working like this in studio eventually elevates the work done by anyone influenced. I have been a lifetime fan of Savage Sword of Conan and from time to time there were stories with amazing inks. I wish I could say the same about the new issues. They have adopted this cartoony style with thick lines all over, shitty anatomy and bad backgrounds filled with coloring effects... So sad. I practically learn how to draw by copying Buscema and having the bar THAT high makes you struggle and eventualy learn even if you will never reach that level of artistry. What to copy from these new lazy stuff?
Rich how about checking some Johnny Red issues in the future? Its about a RAF pilot joining the soviet airforce after his plane was shot down over the North Sea.

I totally agree with you on today's artwork, nothing like the good stuff from the sixties and seventies. Buscema, Romita Sr., Colan, Wrightson.... all greats.
