Bernie wrightson is a clean and polished artist. His tones, lights and shadows commands our attention. Brilliant artist and a great visual storyteller.
The word you're looking for 'efficient'. He captured so much energy in single strokes and then exploited that energy to convey his own ideal light. His transitions and contrast contain so much drama. I spent a little time hanging out with him in Plano, TX some years ago... he didn't really draw they way normal artists draw. He painted his strokes through his whole arm. (Deliberately haphazard?) I learned more in that sitting than the decades I'd spent studying it all out myself. It's impossible to see his work and not sit in awe. He may be gone, but he left such a magnificent trail for us to follow. Long live the old Gods. 40+ years of swooning over his works and they impact me just as they did the first time I saw them. Thanks for taking the time to flip through a few pages.
Love Bernie Wrightson's art! Such a detailed style, at least today. Very rich pencils, just fantastic- one of the best horror artists of all time in any medium! Hopefully this coming weekend I can meet him at Heroes Con on Charlotte! Finger crossed- I've got my Frankenstein Alive 2 & 3 ready and waiting! Another amazing artist spotlight video!
love Bernie! , this upload reminded me to check on his Frankenstein Alive,Alive comic #3. It came out last April, so i just ordered me one. thanks for the great Spotlight! as always a fun topic.
Beautiful beautiful beautiful. You're very right about how those wonderful detailed work could be lost in the process of downsizing, coloring etc. I loved the most careful, almost tender way you treated that house of secrets-issue with his first cover :)
I need to pick up that studio book. Bernie certainly is a master of the line. His style just works so well with horror themes. But being the incredible artist he is he can do fantasy just as well.
Excellent look at this wonderful artist. Looking at his recent Frankenstein book I'm amazed how he puts in so much detail without it becoming a mess, always the composition and focus is perfect along with all the wonderful rendered detail. You are so right about his black and white being the best.
I even wondered if Andreas could be a spur to Wrightston's hard word on the recent Frankenstein...it'll be a while to you see that in collected graphic novel form, unfortunately
At the moment I am on a short-term budget closure comicwise anyway :/ Even without Frankenstein my list of trades to buy has grown enormously in the last weeks... I wonder if I'll really safe money with a short-term budget freeze (I sort of refer to this procedure as my sleepyreader-ish break :) )
love berni's work, thanks for posting this! do you have his book "a look back"? if not you should try to find it. it starts with his early amateur work done as a teenager and goes right up to the late 70s..
Damn Nick, that house of secrets is stellar, just amazing edges and pq. Ive always loved wrightson, even when he was scaring the crap outta me as a kid, I couldn't even look at some of his stuff, it was too freaky lol. I picked up a couple copies of his PC book at a yard sale recently, such a talent.
Indeed..his style is perfect for the horror genre and his influences from his early years with the EC horror books are there on the pages. I don't own any EC books but if you have them, you can see it..check out this gem of an old interview twomorrows.com/comicbookartist/articles/05wrightson.html
Nick I don't know if you were aware but all 4 of the artists lived together in the same house in upstate NY. Rhinebeck , where I believe BWS still lives today .
Hey Nick, hope all is well with you and your family. I will be looking for that Studio book, thanks Nick didnt know about that one. My collecting is so unfocused, all over the place buying too many different things. But because Im a huge Warren Horror and Swamp Thing fan, Wrightson has always been amongst my favorites. Holy crap your HOS 92 looks sharp! I need to get that book still, and i waited too long. It has become a pricey book. I agree about ghastly Graham Ingles influence but in addition Jack Davis' EC horror work was also a huge influence on Wrightson. I see it especially in Jack Davis' cover to Tales From the Crypt 37. Fantastic vid, love your creator spotlights Nick!
Thanks Matt, good luck on hunting for a copy of the Studio. You might find a copy in an used book store. Last year when I was browsing in an old books store in Mass while visiting family, I saw a real nice copy like mine for $20 and it was a first print.....I should have grab it because I know a lot of people would love to find it for $20. I think HOS 92 was one of best buy I had years ago.
Bernie used a "million lines" to adjust to the final product of his time . Todd used a "million cross hatching" technique to accomplish the same in comics in his time. It is called dark gritty atmosphere. Bernie uses a quarter hundred pencil strokes on his character drawings. Todd hey i"ll give you ma7be 1/4million strokes "lines". Per late issue of spawn. Before Greg took the artist helmet. Maybe the toy line has 1 million texture bumps on the sculpt. That would be impressive with a silicone mold.
Hi Nick, I follow your comic reviews from Menorca, a little Spanish island at the Mediterranean. I think you´ll be interested in our channel about comic and illustration. After seven years being a RUclips channel, now he've just become a horror publishing company.

Thanks for sharing. This is one of the most important books regarding contemporary illustrators ever published.

thanks Damian...indeed..the recent Frankenstein book is incredible...so detailed and gorgeous.
Hi Damien, now I get what you said about that Wrightson could be an inspiration for Andreas. Beautiful drawings indeed.
I even wondered if Andreas could be a spur to Wrightston's hard word on the recent Frankenstein...it'll be a while to you see that in collected graphic novel form, unfortunately

No worries on that particular trade, given that it takes Wrightston about a year to do an issue, lol
