    I love how Lemmy was absolutely sick of playing "Ace of Spades" but always played it and always gave it his all because that's what the audience wants.

      He was never sick of that song, who said that? In fact it was always a closer because of it’s ease for him to play. I had the honor of meeting him at The Rainbow Room way back when. Autographed an ‘Ace of Spades’ poker card for me.

      Maybe he was, but i dont think so cause he played what he wanted to play, even if it weren't the fav songs of most motorhead fans, and like even in this song like he did allot later in life/career, alltering the text.
      But yeah funny thing even for a die hard motorhead fan like me, ace of spades was not by far my fav song from them

      Neil Fallon from Clutch told a story from a tour with Motörhead. Lemmy asked him why they weren’t playing Regulator and Neil told him they were sick of playing it. Lemmy told him it doesn’t matter how tired of it you are, there are fans that want to hear it because it’s many of their’s favorite song.

      Lemmy was never sick of playing Ace Of Spades but Brian Robertson was (as well as other classics) which made Lemmy remind him "you play them, those songs pay the wages".

      I think every band is somewhat sick of playing their biggest hits after a while. Take a chef for example once you went michelin star levels, you're not too excited about peeling potatoes anymore. They probably had songs closer to their heart, something they were especially proud of but had to play the same song for decades over and over again. But it's those well known songs that made them famous in the first place, so an artist is SOL there

    • @OS1K3LI
      @OS1K3LI 3 года назад +48

      That’s coz with 2 guitarists, you half to half the sound, then lower the bass to compensate for the low end from each guitar, then raise the drums volume so they can be heard at an even level to everything else. 1 guitar + 1 bass + 1 drums + 1 singer is the best design for a band, but doesn’t always work for specific genres. Keep in mind how great slipknot are with the seemingly ‘bad’ setup, but then how great bands like nirvana are, with the minimalistic design. Also, Motörhead had their amps turned to 11, which also helps.

      I wondered the same thing, then I started playing guitar I realised what Lemmy was doing. He played the bass the same as a rhythm guitar, and with a lot of distortion. Most of the rhythm stuff I thought Eddie was doing, was Lemmy.

    • @djm4457
      @djm4457 3 года назад +33

      I was thinking exactly the same thing! Very, very few bands can pull that off when they desperately need a rhythm guitar but are too cheap to add one on tour. They add a rhythm track on their recordings, but never add a rhythm guitar player in concert. So the whole sound seems shallow, especially when the inevitable guitar solo comes up... Motley Crue comes to mind immediately; they just turn up the amps and hope the wall of sound drowns the lack of a rhythm guitar line: you can barely hear Nikki Sixx's bass....Or Ozzy, who just has his guitarists go to that God awful pinched harmonic sound to add an extra note of noise where the rhythm line should be....But Lemmy...man he could play that bass! Reminds me of the late, great Felix Pappalardi, the original bass player for Mountain. Listen to Missisippi Queen live....its Pappalardi's fuzz bass that drives the whole sound-you'd never know they didn't have a rhythm guitar player!

    • @chriskolb3105
      @chriskolb3105 3 года назад +47

      Well said. There’s nothing worse than when the bottom falls out of three-piece band’s rhythm section during a solo because the bassist’s tone isn’t meaty enough to fill in the sound.

    Lemmy was the epitome of a rocker. Lived in a small apartment a hop-skip away from his favorite bar, and his prized possession was a Billy Bass. He had a net worth of merely $1M at the time of his death. He didn't live in the lap of luxury. He was FAR from extravagant. Lemmy WAS A ROCK ICON.PERIOD. He was an excellent bassist, if one delves further than motorhead he was bassist for Hawkwind. That unique sound coupled with excellent drumming from Simon King gave them heavier and superb music. Just listen to tracks like orgone accumulator or lost johnny to appreciate Lemmy's bass playing.

    I saw motorhead around 2005. I was sitting top right of the stage looking down on the band. during a drum solo Lemmy walked off stage but I could still see him standing behind some speaker cabinets because of where I was sitting. no word of a lie the man cracked a bottle of jack and drank the entire bottle within 5 minutes while casually chatting to a roadie. then proceeded to walk back on stage and hit his cue perfectly and deliver an awesome show. RIP legend of legends

      Not quite entirely true. In August 2015, I talked to Nazi Scott and he told me that Lemmy had some major health issues going on wasn't doing well. What Lemmy was told in the last days is that it was terminal and nothing left could be done. Nazi Scott knew him very personally. He basically was Lemmy's gofer when he was at home in West Hollywood. Scott's a legend in his own right. Dude had his snakes in the seventies show for Alice Cooper and we always snuck at least one or two boas into the Rainbow for shock value. The owner, Mario Maglieri, was rather tolerant of Scott's hobby as long as there was no complaints, and in the Rainbow, you rarely saw anyone complain. It was all part of the vibe.

    I use to hang out with my Best Rocker Friend, Scotty at the Rainbow Bar and Grill on the Sunset Strip on many a night there.
    His Best Friend was Lemme. We would hold down the end of the Outside Patio Bar . Next to a Computer Game , that Lemme would play all night.
    Then, Lemme's Black Girlfriend would show up . We both would sneak to the Upstairs Bar and dance. Many times to " Ace of Spades". Lemme's song. and some Funky stuff.
    If you ever go to the Outside Patio Bar at the Rainbow Bar and Grill. It's called the Lemme Lounge. And there's a Lifesize statue of Lemme. And pictures , too.
    You can play the same Computer Game, that Lemme played , too. And if you go to the Upstairs Bar. The DJs will play a few of his songs .

      A guy I know, his company does all the plumbing for the Rainbow room. He had the same story of Lemmy hanging out in the back playing hours of video poker. Apparently he had to get to the water heater which was behind the video poker machine. One time he asked Lemmy to move and everyone lost their mind like,”don’t talk to Lemmy.” But Lemmy was totally cool about it and they became friendly with each other. He and Lemmy ended up decent enough friends that he went to Lemmy’s place a few times. He said Lemmy had a dirt cheap apartment in the area and always bragged about how cheap it was. Apparently he was the absolute coolest guy.
