Junkyard Valve Cover Gets a JDM Overhaul | Honda Civic Project

- The Budget Honda Civic build gets some JDM bling for the engine bay! We take a $15 Junkyard valve cover and transform it into something worth looking at with the help of Finesse Works!
During my bimonthly trip to the local junkyard, I stumbled across a (mostly) unpicked EG Civic Coupe with the D16Z6 still intact! What a find! It happened to have a spray painted valve cover that had seen better days. I figured with some TLC and powdercoating this thing would look awesome on my Civic! I took it straight to Brandon at Finesse Works in Boise for a complete strip and respray of the drool worthy JDM Red.
I wanted this transformation to be clean, and I didn't want to crudely DIY with a rattle can. Brandon cleaned up all of the old paint, stripped it, powder coated it, and brushed the VTEC lettering for me. I think this facelift will hold me over on the D16y8 for now until I can plan a proper swap (or maybe turbo) in the future? We'll see!
In this video I also install a new valve cover gasket kit on the civic as well as the spark plug seals. I'm still puzzled by the proper way to put in the spark seals, but I haven't found a leak yet. Overall, I think this is my favorite aesthetic engine mod I've done and I totally recommend swapping to a z6 cover if you have an Ek/Ej civic. Vtec Yo!

oShadowkun learn your stuff bud, he doesnt have a cold air intake, thats a short ram intake... a cold air intake relocates the filter into the fender well which sucks "Cold Air" hints the name
@@Coda5610 it’s pretty much a cold air intake that side draws air in from the headlight there’s a duct that’s why the stock intake even has a feed tube right where his filter is because Honda knew cold air gets there. Yeah it’s not a true cold air intake tho but true cold air intakes on this car are so much no worth it it’s not even funny. 650 for a cold air intake is the same price for a k24😭
You definitely installed the spark plug tube seals correctly! That's how they come from Honda and that's how I've always done mine

As for the spark plug seals, you installed it correctly. When you remove the valve cover and look on the underside, you're supposed to only see the rubber, not the metal inserts of the seal.
Spark plug tube seals are to be installed with the recessed area, with the spring, facing the valve cover. Rounded part will go down over the tubes.

That's amazing. If I had extra money I wouldn't mind get it professionally done. Unfortunately I probably won't ever so i would have to do it myself. Lol. If I ever do hopefully it comes out almost as good and it lasts in the vehicle.

Not sure, but I checked when he opened the hood, I didn't even see a ground wire on the old valve cover 🤔
You can see near the front right side there is his ground going to the power steering pump bracket. Doesn't matter if it's on the cover or anywhere on the block
You don’t HAVE to have a ground wire on the block, I just didn’t like that the threading was painted over

I really think you should make a wall for the air intake. You have to block that off from the engine because it's gonna keep sucking I. Hot air which isn't good. Idk man couldn't stop thinking about while I was watching the vid

I used VHT wrinkle red and it lasted about two years before it started peeling. Now I'm running it bare aluminum again with just a little red inside the Honda logo.
you forgot to connect the ground wire.
The ground wire was connected to the power steering pump bracket from the beginning. Also, that spot he kept pointing to on the valve cover is NOT a ground location, that is the bolt hole for the RHD throttle cable bracket.
If you ground at the valve cover, you are supposed to put the wire under one of the nuts that secure the valve cover to the head (in between it and the grommet, obviously). The valve cover is completely isolated from the head by the valve cover gasket, the spark plug well gaskets, and the grommets under the nuts that hold the valve cover on, so attaching a ground wire to it will not ground it to the engine as it is completely separated by rubber components.

I love these videos so much, i think for a cleaner engine bay maybe get a new radiator cap, auxbeam leds dont require all that bulky wiring in the bay, ect. Just few small parts haha id like to see videos like that, also maybe new headlights Ctr style?

I forgot to seal my corners on my civic and it slowly leaks. Not the worst deal ever but it makes the block just look gross😂 your build is coming along bro, I say next you should take out all the interior trim and spray it with clear coat to make it pop. Should be really easy.

@@ALLDAYANTHONY You're right, it all depends on the car they're on and the colors of the accents, I've seen some Electric Blue Pearl Civics with black housings and yellow tinted lamps that look absolutely gorgeous but then seen OEM Chrome johnny's that look nasty. It's all a battle of making the car look nice not rice :)

If that is a baffle in that valve cover and they sandblasted it without removing it, I wouldn't use that valve cover. The leftover media can blow engines.

What do you mean sounds like vtec? I have a y8 in mine and I dont notice any difference in sound past 4k rpm.
