Barry, I believe the rotten eggs float to the top because egg shells have small holes and over time as the air goes into the egg makes it go rotten and fills the egg with air creating the floating effect. That was courtesy of my GCSE food teacher.

    • @whiteedk
      @whiteedk 7 лет назад +9

WatchmanGamer the egg shrinks as it gets older, so the air cavity gets bigger because the egg is porous so the air gets inside. It's not first when it's rotten. A hot ally fresh egg lies horizontal, when it starts to get a bit older but still fully edible it stands up, when I starts to gloat upward it's bad and when it's gloating at the top it's totally rotten

Almost right guys. The reason an old egg floats is due to the fact at the top of the egg there is an air pocket between the shell and the inner shell membrane. This air pocket is tiny on a fresh egg so does not effect buoyancy when placed in water.
As the egg gets older more air accumulates in the air pocket due to the porous nature of the egg shell which in turn causes the egg to eventually float. This process takes approximately 4 weeks from first lay.
This is not an indicator of a rotten egg but just and indicator of the egg being old. Experiments done within the egg industry (of which I used to work as a egg packer and grader) have proved age of eggs alone is not enough to turn an egg bad or rotten. They only way for an egg to go rancid is to store them upside down (pointed end up) so the air molecules that accumulate in the air pocket eventually burst the air pocket in the membrane due to building pressure and causing the air to actually be in contact with the albumen and yolk which causes the egg to go bad/rancid.
Dates on eggs are nothing more than a guide and as long as they are stored correct way up and in a dark, cool, dry place (no fridges) eggs can be usable long after the 4 week use by date printed on the shell.
Any old egg though are best used for baking as the white can be too watery for anything else after 4 weeks.
We can go into the way the albumen breaks down on a week by week stage and the movement of the yolk within the albumen during that time if you would like but that's a lesson for another day 😂😂👍👍👍
      Joff 👍👍👊👊

      All true.
Un-washed eggs stored correctly can be edible for up to a year.
Also, fresh eggs are harder to peal than eggs that are a couple of weeks old.

also been wanting to mention that if the recipe says to spoon the dough or roll into balls before baking, there's no need to flatten them at all..they do it while baking. some recipes, like peanut butter cookies call for flattening with a fork, but otherwise it's just a wasted effort. :)

  • @OceanicJones

The reason the rotten egg floats is that there is gas buildup inside. Through natural decomposition, parts break down through decay and go through a chemical reaction that makes Hydrogen Sulfide (H2S), the sulfur giving it that pungent smell we know so well. It is also why parts of sewage smells like rotten eggs and gas vents in the earth in some places with geysers (seen that first hand in iceland, smelled a bit off as you can imagine).
But yeah, long story short, The rotten egg floats because its full of smelly gas.

For hard-boiled egg peeling I do this: I drain the hot water and put cool water on the eggs on the pot, then I kinda shake the pot with the eggs and a bit of water in it. Make sure the water is cool so you don't get burnt. the eggs will crack a bit and then you can slide your finger under the shell and the sheath beneath it, so between the egg white and the shell. then you can peel off most if not all of it on one piece. it always works for me, I find that it helps to run a bit of cold water over it while you are peeling to avoid burns. Hope you use this hack!!!

The egg with the bicarbonate soda does actually work, I dunno what the difference was but I put and mixed the bicarbonate soda into the water and added the usual salt to the water and then put the eggs in before turning the heat on. So the the eggs gradually were brought up to the right heat and then after they were done my mom and I took them out and put them in cold water with a bunch of ice in it. One of the eggs did explode while cooking and the bicarbonate soda actually changed the texture of the egg boiling in the water to almost a rubber texture but it didn't affect the taste of the exploded one. The ones that hadn't exploded we just rolled them on the counter to crack the shell and it peeled off soooo easy it just came of in giant chunks one of the eggs only came off in two pieces. It was great

The bad egg test is great if you have your own chickens, those eggs have no date stamp, unless you bought extra special M&S chickens as they have stampers up their butt ;) there is another stage to that "hack" however: if the egg sinks and lays horizontally, it's fresh. If the egg goes vertically and floats a little, it's still good but not as fresh. Different methods of cooking work better with really fresh eggs, while others work better with slightly older eggs. (Btw older eggs are easier to peel). A really fresh egg has a thicker egg white, the slightly older egg the white will be more watery. BUT if that egg floats to the top or floats horizontally it's bad (egg shells are porous and older eggs absorb more air so they float). FYI NEVER crack a bad egg in the house, and definitely don't do what my dopey brother did. He didn't check the egg, he the didn't crack it into a bowl, the cracked it directly into a hot frying pan. Result being the entire family out on the garden puking. Mum had to wash all the curtains in the house, open all doors and windows, "do the shake n vac" a whole host of destink "hacks" (btw have you done a destiny hack? Best way to remove strong odours from the house: garlic, onions, fish etc) Our entire house was whiffy for about 3 days, the smell in the kitchen stayed nearly a week and mum binned the frying pan! Btw my knowledge of eggs comes from having a grandpa with a smallholding and I grew up with loads of animals including what seemed to be a million chucks.

Why the old eggs float: Eggs have a little air sack in them, when they're fresh the air sack is small, but as the egg decays, it gives off gases which fill the air sack making the eggs more buoyant.
Why bi-carb might help peeling: Bi-carb is very salty, if the water has a higher salt content than the egg...osmosis occurs which forces as much water out of the egg as it can, less water in the egg means less mass and volume...which would shrink the cooked egg away from the shell. If that is the reason, I expect table salt would work better.

I am a Cub Scout den leader and I just showed my scouts the rotten egg "hack" last week! Others have already said but it's because the shell is porous and the older an egg is the more air it has absorbed through its shell which causes it to float.
In America or eggs are not individually stamped with a date. So I have used this hack before when the date printed on the carton was smudged or hard to read and I couldn't remember when I bought the eggs. :)

The egg floats because it has extra air around the egg and the shell. If it sinks then it is good. If it floats in the center of a cup, you can use it but it is going bad. If it sinks to the very top it means "DO NOT EAT". I did a video on my channel too :)

And take your spoon and slide it under the skin, then you can turn the spoon under the whole skin and peel it quickly. Make sure the dome of the spoon is up. (It follows the shape of the egg. Bring your water with eggs in to a boil
    Let boil for 1-2 minutes
    Cover and remove from burner
Let sit for approximately 17 minutes for large eggs or 14 minutes for medium eggs
Put them into cold water just long enough to be able to handle them.
    Peel as usual
I am able to peel a dozen eggs in about 5 minutes using this method.

Best way to quickly peel a hard boiled egg is to put it in a canning jar with a little bit of water. Screw on the lid and give it a shake! The shell will crack without seriously damaging the egg. We keep a jar by the sink for this purpose around Easter- the only time of the year we have a lot of hard boiled eggs.

i thought every one knew about eggs in water thing? thats how my family have checked eggs forever.
FYI i think it floats due to the air sack inside the egg filling with gasses from the decaying yolk. (on ships they rotate eggs regularly to help keep eggs from going off)

  • @ThatOneDude822
    @ThatOneDude822 7 лет назад

One hack that actually works pretty well for peeling eggs is to cook them until the water boils, then once the water boils, let it got for 1-2 minutes, and then turn of the heat and cover them for 12 minutes. In the mean time, make an ice bath in a large bowl, about half ice half water, and then pour in some salt. Then when the eggs are done, move directly from the hot water to the ice bath and stir it around for 2-3 minutes. Do not let them cool to room temp, go directly from hot to cold. The drastic change in temperature shrinks the egg inside causing it to pull away from the shell, so when you peel it, it has already separated from the shell. It also cools the egg down. Works every time for me.

For the easy use of honey heat up the spoon. Doesn't matter if you heat it over the hob, stick it in boiling water or just run the hot tap over it. Works for anything that gets runny when heated, so honey, chocolate spread, ice cream etc.
As for the floaty egg trick, as the egg spoils it produces gasses which get mostly trapped inside the shell (mostly because it's not a hermetic seal). The bad egg will start off with just the wide end pointing up and go to fully floating depending on how rotten it is. This trick may not work for your back yard eggs because you can't tell if the shell is intact. Mass produced eggs go through several quality checks including a shell check, all eggs with cracks or uneven shells are eliminated and used for something else. Naturally eggs are not perfect, irregularities and minor defects are quite common but you can't always see them with bare eyes. Those imperfections may mean that the gasses escape through the shell and the floaty egg trick will be rendered ineffective.

For peeling oranges, score from top to bottom ( I use the tip of a small paring knife) four times around the orange. I use my finger nail to lift an edge of the section and then pull down. The orange will be whole with minimal loss of juice. I think you can still purchase a tool to score an orange. The tool used to be a door prize from a well known home party company that sold plastic containers.

the egg hack works because as the egg gets older more air space is in it therefore it floats if it is rotten

I add white vinegar to the water for hard boiling eggs...then let them chill under cold running water for 30 minutes...peel like a dream!!!

On the easy peeling of eggs: The older the egg, the easier it is to peel. As WatchmanGamer explained, as the egg gets older, more air gets between the shell and the egg, making it easier to peel. I've also heard that lemon juice can be used to make eggs easier to peel. Personally, I just find that eggs that are 1 week or so old peel easier than really fresh ones.

I've found the easiest way to boil eggs is to, of course, put the egg in when you turn it on but then turn it off and cover it once it starts to boil. You let it sit and cook for 10 minutes for a hard boiled egg and then immediately take them out of the hot water and put them into ice water! This is how I've done it for forever and I never have trouble peeling them plus it cools them enough so you can eat them immediately! You can let them sit for shorter for soft boiled eggs and larger eggs may take longer to fully cook through of course.

I recently found a hard boiled egg hack that works amazingly well. Put the eggs into a muffin tin, 1 egg per section. Bake in the oven at 325 degrees for 30 mins then 10 mins in an ice bath. They peel wonderfully!

for easy peel eggs, boil them in very well salted water or use white vinegar in the water...when done, crack shell and lightly roll it along your hand or counter top to loosen shell and it will peel so easy...

The corn popping on the cob needs to specifically be popping corn / popcorn, which is very different than sweet corn. The Pop a Cob stuff is indeed popcorn. When I was younger we grew popcorn in my grandma's field, when it was dried on the stalks we'd pick it off and put it in a paper sack and zap it in the microwave. The corn we'd pop this way usually didn't fully pop, mostly because the moisture content was still too high. It popped best after we'd strip it all off the cob and left it to dry out a bit longer.

I’ve made cake mix cookies for 20 years. In fact, at Christmas time ii would make yellow cake dough and the children would roll the balls in red and green sugar. This was my solution for a busy working mom trying to get everything done. To this day, that’s what my kids think Christmas Sugar Cookies are. LOL. I’ve made so many flavor combos over the years including snickerdoodles, spice cookies, chocolate with chocolate chips. Very rich but delish.
