All he needed was better flame decals and better retooling to be at least an approximation of a Dodge Viper in alt mode. But he can work as a Cybertronian version of it as I am getting him for bot mode only.
I feel the need to mention that afaik the original sideburn wasn't a licensed car but dodge had problems with how close it looked so the red variant was a licensed figure
I'm glad you're looking forward to it, but man, I'm so mad they butchered a character I really liked from one of my favorite TF shows to give us this guy.
10:57 no they didn’t, takara made the sideburn first and they didn’t license the car mode from dodge, when hasbro imported the rid01 toys, they had to credit the makers of the car mode as such which hasbro must rather avoid doing And as for bumblebee as a Volkswagen, you do know that whenever that mold was sold it was an exclusive, probably to pay up for the license, right?
The original Tow-line figure in "Transformers: Robots In Disguise" was a repaint of Hubcap from "Machine Wars", the original Scourge was a repaint of the original G2 Laser Optimus Prime! In fact most of the characters of "Transformers: Robots In Disguise" were repaints of figures from G1, G2, Transmetal II Beast Wars, Beast Machines & Machine Wars.
Hold on there - The original RID Scourge was itself a redeco of G2 Laser Prime so we cannot object too much if they just do the same thing with the Generations versions. That, however, is one of the shortcomings of emulating older toys, in that they can _also_ emulate past shortcomings and call it 'accuracy'.
RID 2001 aired on September 8, 2001, and, like many TV shows at the time, was forced to undergo editing due to the 9/11 terrorist attacks, which occurred three days later on September 11. This was also the introduction of the six-changing (later ten-changing) Megatron.
They really should have retooled the front bonnet for the car, give it a port on the front and I extra piece to give it a more distinct look for the Altmode and done something to put that piece on the shoulder. Bot mode was fantasitc but the car mode is very disapointing, it didnt need to resemble the og car mode but needed to resemble a generic car. Hopefully an upgrade kit is made in the future.
Gonna wait for a third party upgrade kit to change the front end so its more Viper like Also fun fact! Hasbro was actually FORCED to license Side Burn's vehicle mode! They tried to make it legally distinct like they did with X-Brawn and Prowl but Dodge didnt buy it and so they came to a licensing agreement for the vehicle mode
In what alternate universe? With the exception of additional range of movement in the shoulders and wrist swivel, name 1 thing this figure does that's an improvement on the original. In fact I'd argue that with those 2 exceptions, this "update" is vastly inferior to the original in every way.
What will you do with your current SS Scourges when the Baiwei one come out? Because that dude fixes the biggest issue imo, and that is that the backpack is no longer clear plastic and the smokestacks tab together
Is it too late to hope for a possible Energon Arcee in the Legacy line, no matter how unlikely it is? I mean, we're getting bots from RID here and I haven't even thought about that series since the early 2000s.
The existence of this guy prompted me to get the original deluxe, it wasn’t even that expensive. It didn’t even NEED to be a licensed altmode but I wish they just used a good altmode. Like the unlicensed vehicles on tracks or sideswipe or jazz.
I'm passing on this Sideburn for a lot of reasons. I have Shadowstriker, and it just annoys the hell out of me how half-assed the design is. I still hope they do a Generations Selects 2-pack of Universe Roulette & Shadow Striker, but I won't be satisfied until I make modifications to fix this mould.
Exactly. Take the wrist swivel and added range of motion in the shoulder articulation out of the equation and name one thing which the original version of the figure doesn't wipe the floor with this version of the figure with.
As an owner of the original, the biggest let down here is the lazy alt mode considering how much retooling went into Knockout. Robot mode though is on point and from a plastic quality/engineering perspective a huge improvement over the original. Parts forming aspect doesn't bother me much either as the original more times than not would break where the roof is I believe ball jointed to the arm. Alt mode aside, love the head sculpt, colors, and looks well worth picking up. Really interested to see how Hasbro would handle X Brawn and while we don't have an official Prowl the Velocitron Clampdown is pretty close in vehicle mode.
I also own the original and I think you're softballing your criticisms. With the exception of more shoulder clearance and wrist swivel, the original does everything better - articulation, weapons, weapon storage, vehicle likeness and especially transformation. In fact it's so bad that if the superior figure came later, the RiD original mold is what should be coming out in 2024 and the Legacy version should have come out roughly 24 years ago.

Vehicle mode is a clear downgrade from the OG, but robot mode is an upgrade. No more chicken legs. No front bumper hindering right shoulder articulation. No loose balljointed ankles. Transformation also looks more intuitive. Overall, this might be a slight upgrade.
First, we got Side Burn. Then, Shadow Striker was created using his mold as a base. Years later, Legacy creates a new Shadow Striker toy. Now, Side Burn returns, using Legacy Shadow Striker’s mold as a base. Oh, how we’ve come full circle!
I thought Shadow Striker was pretty good but Hasbro being too lazy to reshape the front bumper and roof and give Side Burn an accurate paintjob is making me retroactively dislike the original figure. The front end isn't even accurate to Shadow Striker so I have no idea what Hasbro were thinking. Sucks that we won't get another new Side Burn for another 20 years so this is the only one I'll be able to store inside the Haslab Ultra Magnus. I HOPE HOPE HOPE a third party company designs an upgrade kit that fixes the shape of the car mode. It should only take four pieces to fix the front bumper and one or two to fix the roof. There's only so much you can do with reprolabels... RID Scourge being a Laser Prime repaint is fairly accurate but he seems to have a bit of Nemesis Prime thrown into the colour scheme as well.
Side Burn looks phenomenal in robot mode, but Has/Tak really missed an opportunity to retool his car mode. Don't get me wrong, it's not a bad car mode, but they could've found a way to make Side Burn's car mode look similar to a Dodge Viper without paying a hefty licensing fee to Dodge; similar to Legacy Evolution Breakdown because that figure was a huge letdown. If anything, Side Burn's car mode wouldn't be a bad idea to use as a Cybertronian or G1 style Earth mode. It's a good thing I decided to skip on Shadow Striker because Side Burn looks infinitely better.
Great review PrimeVsPrime!! I think Sideburn is a "meh" Transformers figure. lol Hopefully future figures of Transformers characters from Car Robots will be of higher quality then Sideburn and Tow-Line. :D Keep on being amazing.
I've seen mods on Twitter that make the front of the car look more like the source material without compromising the transformation. Wish they could have done that for the official bot too 😕 I do like the bot as-is, with the flames on the tail flaps and the BW Megs kissable lips, and the trans yellow is very nice with the blue, though all I can think about with his color scheme is Rescue Bots Chase? Weird right? Not sure if I'll pick him up but if they make a Roulette to go with Shadow-Striker then I'll be on it like Shockwave on a science project
I skipped Shadow Striker but I might pick up this version. I don't mind partsforming if the parts are removed to become accessories/weapons for the robot mode.
As I’ve seen many others say in various forums: getting the dodge license would be more pain and money than it’s worth, and making the figure slightly more viper-like would have been a lawsuit waiting to happen. Apparently over the years Dodge has become a pain in the ass to work with, and even more of a pain in the ass to try and work around.
@@PrimeVsPrime They may have been in the past, but according to several comments I saw in a couple online forums; dodge has become a pain to work with. Now take this all with a grain of salt, because it’s all based on comments I’ve read. And most of the comments mention specifically the viper, so it may only be an issue when it comes to that specific car. It could also just be a budgeting issue, since the mainline stuff (WFC trilogy, Legacy, etc.) doesn’t usually get as much budget as the likes of SS and MP.
@@PrimeVsPrime I think DarkScorch and many others are mistaken Dodge really has been casual when it came to collabs, and even if they weren't, Hasbro could've gotten closer like they did with SS86 Jazz The real reason the alt mode looks like that is due to the designers trying to merge the Shadow Striker car mode design and the Side Burn one, which didn't turn out all too well
For a character who spent a significant portion of his time in vehicle mode in-show, and has a major personality component centered around *being* a sports car, the vehicle mode is a massive miss. And the flame decals are just a massive downgrade. The original figure isn't too much on the aftermarket actually, when I last checked.
Disappointed about alt mode but looks great and intend on getting it. Be nice if they could have made it look closer to the viper. Not exactly, i understand why, as far as licensing. Example like they done with the Datson brothers.
I agree! The alt mode is a let down, although in the case of the Datsun bros, I’d argue they are pretty close whereas I cannot say the same when it comes to the Dodge Viper
We had Scourge in the Walmart-exclusive Velocitron Speedia 500 subline. We had Tow-Line in the Target-exclusive Buzzworthy Bumblebee line. We had the Haslab RID Optimus Prime, Ultra Magnus, and Omega Prime. And now we have Side Burn. Sky-Byte is coming out next year. (The Sky-Byte figure in this video was the Thrilling 30 version.)
I don't really see the RID figures being repaints as a bad thing tbh. Tow-Line admittedly is a bit strange, but with the weaponizer gimmick and the fact that he was in like 5 episodes total, I'm cool with it. I kinda consider Side Burn to be the original and Shadow Striker being the repaint since it looks more like the former than the latter, and how SS was a repaint of Side Burn to begin with. Same kinda goes for Scourge since he was just a repaint of Laser prime, there really isn't much extra tooling or paint needed tbh.
I mean they might be gunshy over the Dodge Viper license, since when they released the original toy back in 2001 they didn't originally acquire the Viper license and Dodge came down on them like a ton of bricks. Later waves had a massive wall of licensing text on the back, and dodge/chrysler logos all over the front. But no BMW logos for X-Brawn. Oddly I don't think they got smacked at all over Prowl, even though I think Lamborghini was owned by Chrysler back then?
I still own the original & in great condition. This one feels like a step down. The lack of the Viper look plus very little detail in the paint & flames makes this one a pass for me
The only problem I have with Side Burn is that they should've given him another entirely original gun that was compatible with his rear bumper and have the gun/dagger accessory be much smaller, like his original 2001 toy.
Probably in the minority here, but I’m stoked for this. I had the original Sideburn figure and I hated it even though he was one of my favs in the show. RID2001 was my introduction to TF and holds a special place in my heart. I don’t even care that it’s not a Dodge Viper. I always thought that car was ugly.
I wonder if the Viper is so specific to that car, that Hasbro couldn’t have made it vaguely resemble the shape. Someone here mentioned Chase, buuuut there are a lot of boxy cars like his alt. I’ve only ever seen the Viper shape with a Viper. Plus, people hated when Sideways in SS wasn’t its correct vehicle due to licensing. Some companies charge too much for a toy company to bother. That is how it is. It’s unfortunate but I don’t think Hasbro is wrong here. I would’ve made the hood pieces more Sudan in design.
How did Hastak manage to produce an "update" to a figure thatvis almost a quarter of a century old, which is vastly inferior to the original figure, in virtually every single way?
@@PrimeVsPrime it's not just the vehicle mode. The transformation looks like it's on an Authentics figure in comparison to the original, the accessories are worse and with the exception of wrist swivel and a greater range of outward movement at the shoulders, there's no improvement whatsoever to the robot mode. This shpuld never have made it past the design stage in terms of approvals.
It's the intended mold, Shadowstriker was just a repaint. But I would've rathered it be the black Shadowstriker, because purple/Cyberverse is way more funky of a design. But as Sideburn it's a good update.
@@PrimeVsPrime I already got my Volvo VNR Optimus prime and I will see if I can get him and other legacy figures like menasor full pack cuz I don't have any legacy yet
That vehicle mode is literally nothing he needed to be retooled just a little bit and he would’ve looked fine but now that they didn’t his vehicle mode looks like crap what RID fans would want this

Maybe 🤔 but they really should’ve just given us an accurate figure
@@PrimeVsPrime i know right they could have retooled the front at least
Not like Dodge wouldn't have objected to the license

Damn, PvP already got him xD
All he needed was better flame decals and better retooling to be at least an approximation of a Dodge Viper in alt mode. But he can work as a Cybertronian version of it as I am getting him for bot mode only.
Now we need X-Brawn and Prowl two of the Autobot Brothers
I imagine they'll slowly come out between now and the release of the Haslab set
Yes!
The bumper tabbing on the shoulder makes a lot of sense.
They should have put it on a 5mm port so it could stay in place while being transformed.

Not sure if I'll pick him up but if they make a Roulette to go with Shadow-Striker then I'll be on it like Shockwave on a science project
I’ve seen them too which is why I think it sucks Hasbro never retooled anything. It would’ve been so simple yet effective 😭
Ah I did not know that! I was under the impression they were quite easy going when it came to collaborating. Thanks for letting me know mate!
@@DarkScorch oh wow that’s such a shame 😭
@@PrimeVsPrime Indeed it is, especially since the Viper is a sick ass car!
@@PrimeVsPrime I think DarkScorch and many others are mistaken
Dodge really has been casual when it came to collabs, and even if they weren't, Hasbro could've gotten closer like they did with SS86 Jazz
The real reason the alt mode looks like that is due to the designers trying to merge the Shadow Striker car mode design and the Side Burn one, which didn't turn out all too well
For a character who spent a significant portion of his time in vehicle mode in-show, and has a major personality component centered around *being* a sports car, the vehicle mode is a massive miss. And the flame decals are just a massive downgrade.
The original figure isn't too much on the aftermarket actually, when I last checked.
yeah, this legacy sideburn is a massive downgrade
Isn't the original figure on eBay cheap for Sideburn, though?
Or maybe I'm looking at the wrong thing?
This is quite a surprise
👊🏻🔥
Disappointed about alt mode but looks great and intend on getting it. Be nice if they could have made it look closer to the viper. Not exactly, i understand why, as far as licensing. Example like they done with the Datson brothers.
I agree! The alt mode is a let down, although in the case of the Datsun bros, I’d argue they are pretty close whereas I cannot say the same when it comes to the Dodge Viper
Def needed more flames with a more striking outline
Bro this mold is so sick easpecially the robot mode
The robot mode is ace! Vehicle mode tho not so much 😭
1 RID LEGACY TOY DOWN 11 MORE TO GO (IF I WAS RIGHT)😊
We had Scourge in the Walmart-exclusive Velocitron Speedia 500 subline.
What was the shark transformer in the intro pictures. Looks pretty sick
Skybite
I still own the original & in great condition. This one feels like a step down. The lack of the Viper look plus very little detail in the paint & flames makes this one a pass for me
The only problem I have with Side Burn is that they should've given him another entirely original gun that was compatible with his rear bumper and have the gun/dagger accessory be much smaller, like his original 2001 toy.
have to agreed that hasbro need to make a new moled for sideburn to dodge viper car is a lot better
@@monster678ful72 Only if you look at the vehicle mode as being more Cybertronian than Earthly
I think this is a pretty neat remake of an old character.
I just wish they also made the red one.
YOUR VIDEOS ARE GOD TEAR
Ah thanks so much!🔥
WOW PRIME IS GOOOOOOOD
Probably in the minority here, but I’m stoked for this. I had the original Sideburn figure and I hated it even though he was one of my favs in the show. RID2001 was my introduction to TF and holds a special place in my heart. I don’t even care that it’s not a Dodge Viper. I always thought that car was ugly.
I pray we can get a Ruination to go with these guys later on with the likely updated Combaticons in the next toyline
Nope, Dodge was always calm
They just tried to blend Shadow Striker and Side Burn's alt modes and fumbled hard
Honestly, the very second I saw this figure's full look was the moment I went to eBay to buy a copy of the original 2001 figure instead.
How did Hastak manage to produce an "update" to a figure thatvis almost a quarter of a century old, which is vastly inferior to the original figure, in virtually every single way?
Ikr?! That’s why I don’t understand why the vehicle mode is so inaccurate as they already was able to create something pretty spot on 🤷🏼♂️
@@PrimeVsPrime it's not just the vehicle mode.
But as Sideburn it's a good update.
i might plan for legacy scourge
He’s cool! I think he can be found for a decent price now too! 👌🏻
