Runway covered in slush, what could possibly go wrong?
Relegation
Ikr
It's devastating to think how many of the players that died could have potentially come on to become potential legends like Sir Bobby Charlton.
Duncan edwards especially. Unreal player
Bobby was actually a reserve player on that team
Well, RIP.
its Amazing how some people still believe it was ice on the wings that cursed the crash even though it was proven to be the slush on the run way
Vicky Payne it's runway not run way
Mico Vanhanen its the same
Mico Vanhanen in México it's called a run guey

It wasn’t their fault the runway was covered In deep slush, once they hit they dropped nearly 60mph and their was nothing they could do
@@DavidC-ro3ro they decided to take off despite 2 failed attempts. They should not have attempted to take off again.
holmbjerg yes they should’ve. It’s perfectly fine not they’re fault. The airport would be closed if it wasn’t safe
@@holmbjerg blame the English football association for that. unlike today Manchester United, when playing in Europe, weren't given extra time between European and league matches. They had to get back to Manchester for thier next sheduled leagye game or have pounts deducted if they miss playing it. The Disaster happened on a Thursday , uniteds next match could have been as close as two days later. It chsnged after the disaster. Unitedceere given dispensation as they beded to get a team togther.
Matt Busby went against the FA taking united into european competition , the FA pushed back. They were under pressure to get home.
Ive been reading up on the two pilot, cpts Thain and Rayment They were both experienced ex RAF pilots especially Cpt Thain.
Fcutdlady but surely these peoples lives are more important than a point deduction???
As a Liverpool fan I find it heart breaking for the families who lost their loved ones RIP to the footballers on board
From a Liverpool fan You’ll Never Walk Alone
True but then the man united fans joke about the 97 deaths. Rip the 97 civilians and the players of the man utd squad
What this fellow said is absolutely true. I went off the runway in a DC9 and there wasn't a sound or prayers or screaming...it was deathly silent.
Once again Smithsonian leaves us with more questions than answers
There teasers to make you subscribe to their channel
radio2014 Actually it’s to make you pay for their channel on television. Then they tell you why it crashed.
Slush on the runway prevented the plane from reaching takeoff speed, thus the plane simply sped into the buildings at the airport rather than lift off.
Thats because those are 5 min excerpts from 1 hour long documentaries, read the wikipedia article if you want to know everything in 5 mins
Lol, just watch on TV are you living on a rock?
On tonight's episode of Air Disasters, a survivor from a 1958 crash carrying the British football team Manchester United recalls his experience. Air Disasters - Mayday Munich: Manchester United's Darkest Day
The English football association has questions to answer. United should have stayed over in Munich for a night but the FA who didn't want English clubs in Europe told them they had to come home to play there next match or be docked points in the league
May I just kindly ask, why are episodes on amazon prime video only for view in the US? Why not other countries?
They all died. The ‘survivor’ is a fraud.
@@cadaverdog1424 explain?
Busby doesn't get the credit he deserves for building 2 teams as good as that in such a short space of time. From a non Man Utd fan 🇬🇧🏴
Interesting to note that some players had swapped seats before that attempt, that ultimately proved to be a factor of who survived and who didn't
Frank Taylor (The News Chronicle), who usually sat at the back with the other journalists, moved to a seat near the front for the third take-off attempt. He was the only one of the journalists to survive.

RIP to the busby babes. I'm from the same area as Duncan Edwards. 🙌🏻
But remember a retired Frank Swift, former MCFC keeper who had become a newspaper reporter was also killed in Munich. He was the first keeper to ever come off his line to punch crosses clear.

This is the most saddest tragedy in Manchester history,
Fly high to the Honoured people on that flight 🕊️
Glory glory Manchester United, ❤❤
It was still a dangerous time then ... when the boss of my mom flew from munich to eg hamburg, she always had to go to an office to set him on the flight insurance list. Modern turbofan engines are powerful enough to get through such situations and allow even some then impossible maneuvers like near verticals
The pilots know what they’re doin boys
I know that German investigators doubled down and tripled down on the Ice on the Wings theory, but I blame the slush that was in the region of where the Elizabethan would have been able to attain V2. Instead, the slush acted like a parachute, slowing it down at a critical point, robbing the aircraft of momentum to get airborne
One of the biggest what ifs in Football history, Players like Duncan Edwards could have become the greatest United player in history, His talent was promising
Even Manchester United is my favorite
Yep I like my comment no one will
@@VirusUTD LOL I liked it.
The loss of Tommy Taylor and Duncan Edwards cost England the 1958 World Cup.
The lead German investigator wasn't interested in any other explanation for the crash other than ice on the wings. The snow from the runway had been cleared sufficiently for jet aircraft, but piston aircraft like the Elizabethan needed more of the runway than had been cleared. The slush on the runway where it hadn't been cleared inevitably affected acceleration, contributing to the crash
its so hard to not cry when there are kids on board
RIP Manchester United
I think if was the guys from Man U I would rather stuck for the night than have to go thru a 3 time trying to take off that plant have been grounded until was fixed
"Wings": pilots just look back to make sure there still here
1:58 the way that guy on the back pouted his lips omg 😍
I can't imagine being a pilot knowing you might die on any flight you sign up for
You can die getting out of bed or walking out your door too... Can't live your life in fear & in this case aviation crashes arent common at all so that shouldn't be such a concerning thought. When you have that many lives depending on you then you just have to buckle down & focus.
You’re more likely to die driving to work every day
If it was the 70's I'd agree with you, but I'm fine flying on any modern plane now.
Sad News for Football Fans
Sir Bobby Charlton (A Manchester United Player onboard) has died earlier Today, he was 86 Years old

R.I.P. boys. We’ll miss u!😢
Anyone notice an uncanny similarity to this and the 2011 Lokomotiv Yaroslavl air disaster?
raffaella rubenstein He said similarity, not the same.
Daniel Treadwell da fu- soccer players might not fight aggresively, but we know damn well they dont bump other people onto the damn ice or wall, they might tackle for the ball, but they know not to push someone in the stands, unless they're angry at the player, but all ice hockey is is skating around with sticks and having big tough guys pushing each other for some damn black thing and hitting it with the sticks and put it in a small goal, which is smaller than me, and im 12, and how would they win, if there are things called tactics, there definently not even seen, it looks like every team uses the same play style and just goes out and play hockey. You say that hockey players are "real men" meaning tough, yeah we all see that, but that doesn't mean soccer players aren't tough too, have you seen fights between players, teams, and heck have all the fans come in and help their team, but who cares, that's your opinion, and this is mine, now shut up, back your bags, and go on to Scotland too because they invented hockey, not some big canadians who like to push each other around and are wanna be gladiators
Yaroslavl was about a disagreement about V1 and rotate, this was slush on runway
Daniel Treadwell Brain dead diabetic ignorant Yank.
(0:49) "No need to de-ice." FAMOUS LAST WORDS, OVER AND OVER AND OVER, AGAIN!!!
Peter Wexler it was slush on the runway
the thing is its not the ice on the wings that caused the plane to crash it was some idiots who work at that stupid airport because they did not clear the entire runway of snow and slush
So, I understand V1 and VR and V2 and Min Unstick. The second the pilots felt the plane bog down, why didn’t the go yoke full aft to try and decrease weight and drag in the slush or absorb more impact into the belly of the aircraft?

Reminder for anyone saying you don't like how this trailer closes: It's just a preview. You have to watch the whole episode to see how the episode ends
Rest in peace Harry Gregg
I'd honestly want to see Charlton and Duncan Edwards playing side by side with George Best, would've been amazing!
Anyone gonna talk about the digital displays in a 1950s airplane
"Captain proceed to take off with the players of the best football club in terrible conditions. "
They should've terminated the plane, they shouldn't have even attempted it. It was an inevitable disaster!
Lana Williams the slush on the ground seems to have cause the slip, and loss of traction on the plane idk if anyone could have predicted that
I agree with Lana! Someone with good judgment could made the simple decision of waiting until conditions improved. It would’ve made a world of difference.
Trinital Gamez: Lose job or lose my life? Hmmmm...I think I’ll choose losing my job.
I love how judgemental people get when they watch videos like this. They think they're some kind of experts.
1) This video is very short and general so you don't know what happened.
2) You are not a pilot (I assume atleast) so I'm pretty sure you're not qualified to make a judgement.
3) You were not in that situation and when things get that tense people get nervous and adrenaline kicks in so they might make mistakes. It's easy to say they should've done that behind your screen. But when the real situation arises things are different.

A house right at the end of a runway? Will be hard to fall asleep with all those planes above your head lol
While it sounds crazy, throughout history urbanizations have been built around airports (no matter the noise the aircraft make or the risk they pose). While reasons for the creation of this urbanized areas changes from case to case, people still build and live around airports, no matter the discomforts or the potential risks.
DocuzanQuitomos There’s a huge neighborhood about 300 yards from the airport here :/ always freaks me out
Always terrible. Never going to forget duncan edwards, he would have been one of the best english players of all time, so much potential and he was amazing with his defending and build-up

Miraculously, it appears the straw and wood farmhouse the plane struck was OK!
Why don't you put full story
Nobody is mentioning the digital gauges.
the secret cloth we must test the secret cloth
May Day May Day
mystery o mystery
Even after they found the truth of the accident that didn't give the pilot his job back.
They even said "CHRIST WERE NOT GOING TO MAKE IT"
I cannot get the point why the flight could not take off......technical fault??
Basically the airport authorities and the pilot were equally to blame for not worrying about the slush on the runway.
Whats the backup or safety plan if a plane fails to takeoff?like it never flew and still managed to get crashed? Is the runway so small or what?
It depends at what point there is an emergency. Before V1, you can try to stop within the runway limits. After V1, you need to make the airplane fly... or break hard and pray the plane stops quickly (because it's, most likely, not going to stop within the runway left).
Manchester United's darkest day? Its about just as dark every match day these days
This was made 7 years ago
imagine the flight was canceled. If it was canceled, manchester united would be the best team in europe.
Random question why are they so scared, was there a incident before or something
How many people survived?
As usual, smithsonian channel left me with more questions than answers
They make pay for Smithsonian on television. Only then they tell you why it crashed.
Why didn't they Just cancel the flight when thé weather isn't good -_-
Most of the videos I watched on this channel are 80% the same: crashing when it's foggy, in a hurricane, entering in a microburst, turbulence... Etc.
Time constrictions and Company pressure bro
