    Greatest horror game franchise ever created imo. I don't think people truly realize how much of an impact the orginal silent Hill series has made over almost two decades now. I absolutely love this game and am still heartbroken that we will never get the proper remake that silent hill 1-4 DESERVES more than any other gaming franchise. Silent hill literally created psychological horror, and changed the typical narrative of horror games by not having to scare the player, by using constant jumpscare tactics but instead changing the environment of the game and constantly causing a sense of dread and distrust with different characters, enemies and alternate realities of the supernatural. The first 2 games took survival horror and flipped it into psychological horror, something that resident evil has always lacked in my honest opinion. Resident evil was mostly heavily survival based and I feel like silent Hill should be praised much more for being an intense psychological survival nightmare of a game 💯👏🏿👏🏿

    • @maiseree1511
      @maiseree1511 5 лет назад +34

      I think Resident Evil is just as good in the horror department as Silent Hill is, just with a more different approach and flavour. The RE games focused more on elements of survival and dread such as smart ammo management, strategy-based planning and maneuvering and panic whenever a boss appears. The SH series on the other hand had a more intimate, surrealistic and character-driven approach. It was more easier to maneuver around enemies and manage your ammo but the surrealistic nature of the environments as well as the deeper and mature themes are the core of SH.

    • @Fadeddreams5
      @Fadeddreams5 5 лет назад +19

      Both franchises take very different approaches. Like you said, Silent Hill focuses on psychological and supernatural horror, while Resident Evil focuses on sci-fi/bioterrorism, with the horror coming from resource management and evading monsters, rather than killing them. I feel RE's simpler-to-understand approach, coupled with flashier gameplay makes it far more marketable, but I would have loved to see PT change that.

      Yes, but by clues and other things we can know what are the possible true endings, SH 1: Good ending, a producer of the game confirmed that Cybil is dead, so the Good + ending is not possible (Although we do not know if she died in the city). SH 2: The ending in which James dies next to Mary's corpse (jumping into the lake with his car) is possibly the true one, in the other games James is mentioned lost and never found, also a producer of the game mentioned that Mary's corpse is in James' car early in the game. SH 3: The good ending is the most obvious. From here on out it is where everything gets a little more confusing and we really don't know what the real endings are.

    While she villainizes James, that's because she's a literal child with a black/white personality, and I think she was perceptive enough to catch onto how fraught his relationship with Mary was.
    As for when she locks James in the room: yea, from his perspective, that was a dick move that could've cost him his life. But from her perspective? She's not in the overworld, so it's just a clever escape from stranger danger lol

      The timelines were established after the games or vaguely referenced in game in ways few people would notice. I'm surprised Silent Hill the Arcade isn't included in the timeline, it takes place in the same year as Silent Hill 2. The Little Baroness went missing in 1918, and Silent Hill The Arcade takes place "75 years later." In addition, the spiral staircase area is labeled "19181993", making the year clearer.
      In Silent Hill Homecoming, the reason why it is set 2007 is because of Adam Shepard's age and birthday. In October, Alex Shepard states in his diary (which can be read in the Silent Hill Wiki) that he plans on escaping from the hospital and hitching a ride to Shepherd's Glen, meaning that it would be impossible for Homecoming to take place in 2008 or else Adam would have been 54 years old. Plus, Nora Holloway's missing poster, which Elle posts in 2007, states she was 15 years old.

There are still the same surrealistic nature and psychologic themes but it all happens in a alien spacecraft instead after getting abducted in Silent Hill. The reason why Alessa was born with supernatural powers is because she is actually of alien descent. And this "God" the Order is contacting is actually an alien lifeform. No, no, no. Alessa did not summon her other half (Cheryl), that was the doing of Dhalia.
    Dhalia specifically says to the other cult members, "We'll use a spell", reference the spell that convinced Cheryl to demand that her father, Harry take her back to Silent Hill.
    This was done because the Samael ritual could not be completed as long as Alessa's soul was split in two.
    Dhalia needed the two halves as one to attempt the ritual a second time.
    Alessa was trying to keep the two halves separated, so that she could experience a normal childhood as Harry's daughter, as opposed to the abusive treatment she received from Dhalia and the other cult members.

    I get why they had pyramid head in homecoming, since Alex was the one who ended up actually killing Josh (sort of similar to SH2) but they couldn't have just made his own representation of an executioner? I feel like it's more impactful to keep Pyramid Head in SH2 since it perfectly fits James' situation...adding him to any other game as some universal executioner, even though silent hill is percieved differently by every citizen in the town, seems like the people who make these games after Team Silent are just uninspired

      I think the biggest thing is probably just cause he's so dang iconic! Prolly lazy devs too (those other Homecoming creatures werent the greatest), but best way I can think of to make him fit in both stories is some of the cult pictures/stories. Sort of like how holy books make you imagine someone else's version of the afterlife. It's a long shot, but James and Alex could have both been exposed to things that made them think of a very similar entity. I'm sure more than a few people imagine Satan roughly the same! At the same time, even with the same details, people also imagine it totally different. That being said, I also wish they'd used something else in Homecoming! Any hulking, nasty, tortured soul woulda done.

    Silent Hill Downpour had one of the best stories in the series. The meaning was also compounded with every ending you could get. Sadly, you could tell the studio was seriously strapped on resources to make the game they wanted.

      @vovin8132 5 лет назад +1

      I think Downpour was done quite well, and while a different style than tradition SH, it definitely felt much more up to date. Controls/fighting was solid and I liked the open world aspects, which felt much more realistic than the typical boring streets in past games. Enemy design wasn't so great, though I did like those shadow enemies. Side quests were fun, and some of the scenery was cool, like that little lair area where you have to light the black candles. The story was a little iffy: even though I beat it like 3 times, I did not realize UNTIL WATCHING THIS VIDEO that Murphy intentionally got himself into prison. I was under the impression that he went a little crazy after the death of his kid, which is why he stole the cop car. Now it makes so much more sense.

      @@raitobasakura The plot in Downpour isn't the greatest, no arguments there. However, the gameplay wasn't bad and the environment and atmosphere was good... except for some of the alternate world chase scenes, which felt and looked kinda tacky. Some of the areas you go to had some of the best atmosphere out of any games I ever played. The area where you are at that tourist overlook site at the water falls before the cave is particularly well done, and I also liked the central building too with the big painting of Samael. I also really liked running around the urban neighborhoods, and the docks, and the side quests like the ribbon quest actually had a profound context. All that stuff was great, but then you had the whole boogeyman concept, which I found confusing and nothing more than reintroducing a Pyramid Head-type character. So I don't disagree about plot, but gameplay-wise it was alright.

      The main thing to take out of Homecoming is that by that point, Silent Hill as a town is going downhill. The Order is becoming much more undisciplined and radical, and is expanding to nearby communities just to keep its ranks up, since they pretty much killed off Silent Hill's population. There's a high manpower cost when running an apocalyptic death cult, you know :| . Downpour was definitely detached from all of the other games in terms of plot, but it was really more of a proof of concept that they could modernize the set pieces and open world layout of the town. They were probably hoping to get the clear to produce a new mainline entry to the series.

    At 9:34, when you say James killed his wife 3 years ago, that's not actually correct. One of the evidences that shows that is when he meets Laura at the Lakeview Hotel and Laura tells James she had become friends with Mary for tha past year. Notice the "past year" is in direct contrast with James affirmation that Mary died 3 years ago. The truth is that Mary didn't die 3 years ago, but probably just 3 days ago. After Mary came home to stay with James (before she died from her terminal illness), he killed his wife. Then, according to game developer Masahiro Ito, he put Mary's body is his car's backseat and drove to Silent Hill. At this point James is in so much shock and trauma for what he had done he represses all memories of killing Mary in such a way that still according to Ito he cannot even see her corpse in the car. So James only thinks she died 3 years ago, but her corpse is still fresh in his car's backseat.

    Interesting video, this is probably the most likely line of events for the series, but I personally prefer to think that the series has 3 separate time lines:
    The Original timeline:
    This one includes Origins, 1, 3, Homecoming and lastly Downpour.
    The reason why is because from what I could gather, there's no mention of the events from SH2 or 4 in these games, while in Homecoming, we see Travis, Cybil is mentioned, and you can find a document that mentions Douglas from SH3, and in Downpour you can find 2 pictures from SHH, the welcoming sign from Shepherd's Glen, and the Shepherd family house.
    The Sunderland Timeline:
    This one consists of 2&4, and the only reason why is because we see Walter's grave in SH2 and he's mentioned in a newspaper.
    Also there's a character in 4 called Sunderland and he mentions that he lost a son in Silent Hill.
    The Shattered timeline:
    Only SHSM, no need to explain why, right?

    You can tell where the quality and story started to fall off in this series when the stories for 4, homecoming, and downpour can each be summed up in a few sentences. These games are still far more enjoyable to me than most big budget triple A games though.

    Alyssa was not burned as part of any ritual. This was something made up for the movie. Watch TRSHE for a more accurate analysis of what actually happened. Also, Origins is not cannon. The only games that are cannon are 1 -4. The others weren't made by Team Silent; therefore, are irrelevant to the storyline.

    • @jamiejohnson2278

      @AJ ZATHRACK You missed the point. Silent Hill 1 - 4 were made by Konami; therefore, they followed the rules of the series. The games/movies that came afterwords were made by different companies and did their own thing. I mean, Pyramid Head in Homecoming? Come on!

    If there was ever a game that needed to be remade, using the original writers and team, it's silent hill 2.
    Alot of people say sh1 needs remaking, but silent hill 2 imo still holds it's place after all these years as one of the greatest horror games to ever tell it's story.

      That's not gonna happen, the team is retired, and some of them already aren't in this world. This is the irony of this fandom, they wanted the team back, but trashed them with SH4. Now a remake is on the way, and trashed Konami again.

    I always thought it was
    Origins - 1976
    1 - 1983
    2 - 1993
    3 - 2000
    Up until here it's all pretty much confirmed, however, I start to differ in the next ones
    4 - 2004
    Downpour - 2004
    I also consider Homecoming to not be part of the regular timeline since it has more in common with the movies than the other games
    Movie Timeline
    1st Movie - 2006
    Homecoming - 2008
    2nd Movie - 2012
    Another timeline
    Shattered Memories - 2009

      On Downpour we found out that Alex is dead, that created a doubt if he really hurt Josh, or like Jacob's ladder, his isolation at the hospital created the idea that he needs to be blame for that. PH never lead him to any place unlike James.

    I don’t know what the people’s beef is with Silent Hill Origins. It’s a pretty great game and it fits perfectly with the lore on Alessa. (And yes, I played almost all of the games in this series including the older ones if anyone is going to bring that up.)

      It really doesn't fit. The house burning was implied as an accident in SH 1 while Origins showed Dahlia intentionally setting the house ablaze. Plus the portrayal of Alessa doesn't make sense.
