    Saab 4-button remotes are prone to deterioration. Buttons on the case wear and switches on the PCB fail. Batteries should be replaced regularly to avoid being stuck out of a locked car. In this video, I show you how to replace the battery and the case and finally resynch the remote to the car.

    The new case in this video is a very close copy of the original with a hard shell and soft buttons. Good value at only about £10 for case, key blade and spare pcb switches.
    Worldwide delivery available from here: bit.ly/Saab_Key_Case
    Add-on service for having the key blade cut: bit.ly/Key_cut_service
    If you're not confident about soldering such small parts OR if you need a completely new additional remote, then you can buy a PCB only here bit.ly/Saab_PCB which you can fit into your old case or using the case above you can build a completely new remote for less than 20 quid!! You will need to have it programmed to the car with Tech2 though.
    Finally, batteries. The remote takes CR2032. I change mine every 2 years regardless of the dash message and have been using these with no complaints thus far: bit.ly/CR2032_5pk

    “You have been warned” - but warned about what?? If your car is locked, the remote doesn’t work and the key won’t unlock the door, that’s TROUBLE. You are LOCKED OUT and you will have no option but to smash a window to get in AND will have to get someone with Tech2 out to the car to replace the CIM and program a new key. Likely cost around £1000 or so.
    Of course, if you keep a spare remote/key and check it’s operation regularly, that will save you from the above hassle and expense.
    Do not fall into the trap of thinking I’m being overdramatic for effect. Over the last 4-5 years I’ve been active on Saab forums, I’ve seen this happen to a few people.
    The best defense: keep a WORKING spare.

      When we were locked out of our 9-3 wagon I used a length of wire coat-hanger (bent into a hook at the end) to go between the door and the seal, hooked under the door lock, and popped it upward to let me in.
      It took a while, and I may have said a few swear words during the process, but it worked and there were no ill effects noted to door, window, or lock thereafter.

      Read your owners manual. Use the metal emergency key to unlock the door in case the car or remote battery is dead. no need to smash windows. None of this will help if your key is not recognised though

    • @desireevahdati4243
      @desireevahdati4243 3 года назад

      I thought that too until I realized that inside my key fob there’s a little button on the back of it and it just looks like a little emblem it’s a circle you push it it opens up the case and inside of it is the actual key that you can use to unlock the car door depending on your alarm it might be tricky but if your battery is dead your alarm obviously won’t work anyway

    I changed the battery a couple of months ago and only really had theoretical issues in the back of my mind of it being an issue. I made sure that I went straight away to the car and started it. I do need to change the cases on both keys though, as the rubber is starting to degrade, and have watched another vid of yours so thanks for the info and a long life to all the Saabs that are still on the road.

    • @CycloneCyd
      @CycloneCyd  Год назад +2

      Once the rubber buttons are degrading, good idea to change the case because the switches themselves become vulnerable to damage.

    I’m wondering why my automatic window opening no longer works from my key fob. I have a poor driver side central locking actuator which usually doesn’t open the door with the central locking. I used to get past this by holding down the unlock button which would drop the windows at the front but this feature has suddenly disappeared!!

    Hi Cyd, this morning both of my fobs to my 2004 Saab were not working. I did take your advice and used the manual key to open my driver’s door without any difficulty but I did wake all the neighbors when the alarm started blasting. I did put the fob as quickly as possible into the ignition, and it did start up just fine. (I also replaced both fobs with new batteries). I then tried once again to use the fob to lock the door but to no avail. Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

    Thanks for all of your advice so far. I removed the ISM and took it apart. It was very clean on the inside but I cleaned it anyway. I connected it back to my car and left it loose {outside the console}. I am getting a bell when I first put the fob into the ignition, but then I get both the "steering wheel malfunction" and "key not recognized" messages. I tried jamming the locking spring on the back of the SIM and was able to turn the key, but got the same messages again. I heard the fuel pump kick on the first time, but when I tried it again, I couldn't hear it come on again. I removed the starter relay from the box, jumped it with needle nose pliers, and I got the car to turn over but not start. The ABS module is hooked up properly but I've had problems with it in the past and used your tip to bypass it. Do you think I should try that again? If it is the CIM is there any way to get around it and get the damn car to start and run? It's a really nice '06 9 3 Aero convertible but I don't have a lot of $$$ right now, and I don't feel like playing guessing games...Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated...BTY, I replaced the 5-year-old car battery {$220.00} to no avail. I do not have or know anyone with a Tech2. Thanks again!

      Schematics? Not sure what you mean by that. However, yes you can replace the switches. The case and key I linked in the description can be bought with 4x new switches. There are loads of videos on how to solder new switches onto PCBs. It isn't difficult.

      For future comment readers, make sure your headlight switch is turned on! On my left hand drive/USA car, this switch is to the left of the steering wheel where you find your fog light buttons. Every time I bring my car to the mechanic, they turn the headlight knob to 0, which doesn't allow the high beam switch to stay in the on position. You, the daily driver, don't normally mess with this knob because of the daytime running lights, but it's possible someone else did.

    I just bought a Saab 93 yesterday. And today I cannot open the car anymore! Remote it’s not working and nor the physical key! It’ an electrical issue or he give me the wrong key? • @CycloneCyd

      what do you mean by the physical key not working? Is the barrel seized and won't turn or the key won't go in?
      I presume you've tried both remotes and both keys?
      DO NOT try changing the battery in the remote.
      IF it is a car battery issue (I'm assuming you mean the battery is flat) then you're gonna have to get the front centre grille off to open the bonnet latches and apply a booster battery. The car should not lose synch through a flat battery (or disconnected battery)

    As from what I see in the comments and video, this key fob is nothing near the good quality. Then You stick your key back to the fob, I can see a gap in between them. That is one poor quality replacement key fob! And that's the reason why someone of You can't properly turn the key in the car.
