This video was one of the biggest of the MTV heyday
The 1992 MTV Video Music Awards aired live on September 9, 1992, honoring the best music videos from June 16, 1991, to June 15, 1992. The show was hosted by Dana Carvey at UCLA's Pauley Pavilion in Los Angeles.
The night's biggest winners were Van Halen and the Red Hot Chili Peppers, as each group earned three moonmen that night. The Red Hot Chili Peppers, meanwhile, won the award for Viewer's Choice and received a total of nine nominations for two of their videos, becoming the most nominated act of the night. Six of the Peppers' nominations were for "Give It Away", and the remaining three went to "Under the Bridge". - wiki

I don't know if it made it to court, but it was decided they had to have 75% coverage. With 4 of them in the band, that means 3 of them had to be dressed, while Flea was still doing the sock thang! He's wrote or co-wrote a lot of music for other artists, especially hip-hop, if you've ever seen the video for Young MC, "Bust A Move" you'll see a very young flea in some stuffed animal pants, dancing around playing bass, he wrote the mucsic for the song too.

Supposedly they were influenced by P Funk. "Sir Psycho Sexy" is a good example. P.S. - Warning. A song with a mature theme.

All these early 90’s jams take me back to high school. Simpler times. Getting the feels again watching Jamel react. Early 90’s rock is classic like late 60’s rock. Timeless and powerful.

That backwards music you hear was started by the Beatles back in 66 on their Revolver album. Songs like She Said She Said, I'm Only Sleeping, Tomorrow Never Knows and their single Rain have it.

Jamel there is a soundtrack to a movie called Judgement Night from 1993 where every track is a collab between a rock + hip hop artist eg. Living Color & Run DMC, Slayer & Ice-T, Pearl Jam & Cypress Hill, Biohazard & Onyx, Helmet & House of Pain, Faith No More & Boo-Yaa Tribe, Teenage Fanclub & De La Soul, Mudhoney & Sir Mix-a-lot.

JAMEL! The DJ’s at school dances when I was growing up only played rap and R&B. Never rock. One time in the 7th grade, I slipped this CD to the the DJ and told him to play this track, and everyone just kept dancing. 🙂

The Red Hot Chili Peppers loved Funk Music growing up. One of the their inspirations was George Clinton and Parliament Funkadelic. In fact, George Clinton produced the Peppers’ 1985 album “Freaky Styley”.

I saw them and Fishbone play in 1985 at LA Street Scene, which was a free concert in DTLA. If you haven't already, check out Fishbone. I was obsessed with them in high school and still love them. Their first album is still the best and I love "Cholly" too.

Man, I remember, this was the first video I ever saw on MTV. I'd been listening to a lot of music, but it was mostly Billy Joel. Not that there's anything wrong with Billy Joel, of course, but Give It Away was my first taste of "what the kids were listening to at the time." And man, really opened me up to all the great music that was coming out in the Early 90s. It's still what I go back to when I want a pick-me-up. RHCP, Nirvana, AiC, Soundgarden, Green Day. Those were some great times in music and great times to watch MTV.

When the band won their first Grammy for this song, the category was Best Hard Rock Performance (thereby proving that, once again, the awards people had not a clue). One member said in an interview that the award might as well have been named, "best song by white guys playing electric instruments". The band made a point of saying that it was straight up funk, and came partially out of their longtime association with George Clinton.

I read somewhere that the video director had never directed the Chili Peppers before, but he basically took them out to the Mojave Desert, painted the band silver, then said, "Action." The band simply spazzed out on camera and that's all it took.
