*I'm not a music theorist* but I believe that key change on the solo is called either secondary dominance or negative reharmonization. They used the A minor chord as a fulcrum, and teetered into the A major scale, landing on the vi (minor 6th) chord of this new key (F#m). The other chords in this section point to A major as the root until they switch back to A minor/C major literally with an A major chord to an A minor chord. Lots of music uses this trick for one or two chords in a progression, and make for chords that are tasteful but not as predictable. An interesting sound can come from keeping melodies in the original key while modulating keys in the chords underneath.
very cool harmonic move on the bridge -- what they did is go from the key of Am/C, to the key of F#m/A (after playing a Dm), so in other words, they went to the relative minor chord (F#m) as if the song was in Amaj the whole time, a very interesting harmonic development that I had never properly analyzed -- that's why when they splash back into Am, the Bm,D,A,E acts as a pivot dominant chord because the E chord then leads back to Am (which is actually a moment of harmonic minor although Frusciante doesn't play the G# he could've)
One of my favourite DVD concerts! Btw, this one is great but in my opinion another cool Californication intro is Permutation (live @Montreal 2006). It was released as a B side of Snow (Hey Oh)
Michael, please refer tonthe rhcp live jam called Permutation for another great example of the up/ down interplay between John and Flea. It's a B side off the Stadium Arcadium record, i believe. Great video, thank you.
It is, in my opinion that, The Red Hot Chili Pepper must tour hard in The United States when possible, after what we have, and are currently experiencing. We need their loud resounding relief.
Great video. I really love me some music theory, but what I like even more is when songs sort of break the "rules" and throw in things that don't quite fit, but they just sound so natural. First thing that comes to mind is Master of Puppets, the intro riff is sort of "chromatic" since it uses literally every note in an octave and then there is a missing 32nd note, during the verse but that too sounds totally natural. Also was recently watching a Rick Beato video with Syn Gates from Avenged Sevenfold talking about the Shepard of Fire solo, and how he does a parallel major/modal mixture things for just one note, which isn't "correct" according to music theory, but it sounds totally natural.
There's a 16 year old me in that crowd losing my absolute shit, what a great day that was!

Dude that lick you played around 11 mins when you were improving was sick!
That chord tone tip seemed to be right place right time for me today. Thank you Michael
very cool harmonic move on the bridge -- what they did is go from the key of Am/C, to the key of F#m/A (after playing a Dm), so in other words, they went to the relative minor chord (F#m) as if the song was in Amaj the whole time, a very interesting harmonic development that I had never properly analyzed -- that's why when they splash back into Am, the Bm,D,A,E acts as a pivot dominant chord because the E chord then leads back to Am (which is actually a moment of harmonic minor although Frusciante doesn't play the G# he could've)
john can do anything with the minor pentatonic it's crazy
Your going to have over a million real soon buddy! Best channel on the toob
One of my favourite DVD concerts!
Btw, this one is great but in my opinion another cool Californication intro is Permutation (live @Montreal 2006). It was released as a B side of Snow (Hey Oh)
Frusciante is an underrated backup vocalist
Thanks for doing some Frusciante my man! Funk on brother!
Cool shirt, my brother!
Great tune... a classic.
Awesome job, as always 🎸🔥
If you´re gonna do slane castle you really gotta do Scar Tissue as well, favorite solo ever
I’m so glad RUclips recommended this to me.
I actually love how you go into the weeds and provide some analysis and explanation of the theory here!
I was 13 in the crowd. Second gig ever. It set the bar pretty high!
I love this channel. That is all.
It's SO good.
