84 Harley FXR: what started as a primary leak has escalated into a whole thing! Shop Days & Upgrades

  • Starting some upgrades on my 1984 Harley Davidson FXR with the Delkron engine. Had some blown seals that needed replaced and this quickly turned into a whole endeavor of finding more and more issues until we get to the point where the jugs need to be taken off. New clutch, starter, seals, progressive suspension, nose cone, gaskets, on and on and on. Good thing we found all of that and can address these issues now, before it toasts some integral engine components. Wrenching now to ensure the rest of riding season is free of issues. And of course, prepping for racing and long distance riding. This is my touring bike and my HP machine, so it gets spoiled just as much as my Ironhead. Thanks for watching!

    Here's some realness, we are just broke bikers living the low life and getting by. I ride a 1985 Ironhead Chopper as my daily, my touring bike is a 1984 FXR. We have lots of Ironheads and FXRs and are constantly building more, trying to keep these old neglected scoots on the road instead of rotting away in a garage.

    Yeah man. In 92 or 93 they added the umbrella valve in the heads and also kept the lower crank breather for one more year. It shouldn't hurt anything to add them to the bike. I wouldn't think . I shouted yall out in my video dropping later today. Shout out to all the chopper / vintage bike channels out here doing the deal. FTW 🎉

    Hey Sally. From what I see in the video you show your cam cover, off the bike. That is a 92 and later cam cover and if you put it on your earlier engine it will puke oil out the breather hole pretty steady, Thus you have a catch can. (the breather hose should be at least 3/8's hose or you will also restrict its ability to breathe causeing problems. )The gaskets are also different for the pre 92 and later ones. The early gasket needs to cover the window area, left bottom of cam chest, 92 and later will not. But the gasket will not matter if you put that later cover on your motor. Oil will be everywhere. I think thats your over oiling problem. Also if you want to stop base gasket leaks consider putting oil drain back tunes in the cyclinders, often called pig tails. They thread into the cylinders at the bottom and help direct oil past the gasket area. I use them all the time. Changing the heads to overhead breather will not help you out here as your case, and breather gea,r are not designed for it. Check that cover out and compare it to a pre 92 cover (or cam cover gaskets) and you will see what I mean. Good luck.

    • @ironheadsally
      @ironheadsally  Месяц назад +1

      Thanks for the comment, we went thru our parts and found that it sure was a different nose cover than it shoulda been for case breather. Put on the other nose cone with the diaphragm and rhat should help immensely! Cant believe i rode alll these miles without it and had no issues besides spitting a little oil 🤣lol i think i got lucky lol

    Good morning 🌅, great job, it’s better to do a proper job, otherwise it will come back and bite you later, you could be 50 or 1000 miles away from home, and a big job, When I had mine in the mid 90s , I put a lot of effort into making sure that the job was done correctly, and it paid off in the long run, as I got £1500 more for my bike than I paid for it , I did trade it in for my Deuce, in 2000, I am now back on another deuce,
    Last week I took the bike for a control techniques inspection and it passed with flying colours , Just waiting for my new registration plates, But I am legally allowed to ride the bike on the road, hopefully put another hundred miles or so on the bike in the next week or so and then change the oil all over again, Keep up the great work both of you, France.

      @@ironheadsally good morning 🌅, guys, I thought I told you ages ago that I had to sell my 2000 deuce back in 2019, as I’ve been scammed by my ex female partner, it’s taking me five years to resolve, and get some funds, not a lot, but about three months ago I purchased another deuce from England, I’m now just waiting for my final piece of paperwork so I can change my registration plate, and then it will all be legal and registered for France, The bike was in a bit of a state to say the least, I’m still finding mud and other stones and stuff under the bike as it had not been cleaned for many years, And I had to fit the new main drive belt plus front pulley for the drive belt, New coil Leads and plugs complete oil change, rebuilt the carburettor HSR 42, the only thing I think I need to do is tighten up their headstock, as I’ve noticed there’s a knock every soft when going over bumps, Plus last night I found out that I had clamped part of the sleeving around the clutch cable in between the primary case housing, I noticed I’ve got a leak, so I’ve got to strip down clean it all up and put a new gasket in, it sailed through the control techniques inspection, so far I’ve done around 150 miles on it, I was hoping to go for a week holiday camping by myself, In the next week or so, But I have had serious problems with my roof on my property, from storm damage from back from 2022, I’ve had a big argument with the insurance company, I think I finally got somewhere low. It’s gonna cost me a few pennies to get it sorted., so I’ve got to get that done first before I go anywhere, Ride safe ride free France,
