Jujutsu Kaisen (呪術廻戦, rgh. "Sorcery Battle")[b] is a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Gege Akutami. It has been serialized in Shueisha's shōnen manga magazine Weekly Shōnen Jump since March 2018, with its chapters collected and published in 25 tankōbon volumes as of January 2024. The story follows high school student Yuji Itadori as he joins a secret organization of Jujutsu Sorcerers to eliminate a powerful Curse named Ryomen Sukuna, of whom Yuji becomes the host. Jujutsu Kaisen is a sequel to Akutami's Tokyo Metropolitan Curse Technical School, serialized in Shueisha's Jump Giga from April to July 2017, later collected in a tankōbon volume, retroactively titled as Jujutsu Kaisen 0, in December 2018.
Jujutsu Kaisen is licensed for English-language release in North America by Viz Media, which has published the manga in print since December 2019. I like to say Gege cut about 75-100chapters worth of material. The official fan book and Gege numerous lore dumps in other media kinda proves it too😂😂
JJK could have potential been a running long series but Gege himself didn't want that and also wanted to finish the story already. I think its because we have seen the effects of Mangaken health decline for those who give up their entire lives to it. I dont think Gege wanted that 😅 plus Shueisha seems ok to let JJK finish, back in the day they controlled the mangaken to either continue prolong a manga or tell to pack up like Kubos story

@hoominbeeing gege is a great writer just because he doesn't explore every piece of lore doesn't make it bad writing. The story is meant to be short it's not a long running series like dragonball or naruto the narrative is simple and straight to the point gege doesn't like getting off track for fan service there's no point. Good writing isn't giving every detail of lore or exposition about the world. It is about the quality of the story and honestly your judgment is coming from a place of ignorance about what good story telling is. Literally dunning-kruger effect at uts finest.

An issue I've had with gege for a while is and this isn't all of them but when it comes to the side cast he doesn't write characters with strong motivations he writes characters with a purpose to fulfill. And once they serve that narrative purpose he trashes them. He refuses to explore them past the minimal details given. And what erks me the most is people eat it up. Just because gege is a bit quirky and kills characters unlike other shonen authors people will justify his poor character writing and say death completes the character. What's even worse is that no one has anything to say about him not using characters. Like the amount of off screen characters that have gotten no development and no reappearance is wild. And yes maybe they are too weak to be relevant but then say that. Instead of in series explanations characters just disappear as if they never existed after serving their purpose. Fulfilling a purpose isn't what makes a great character nor a complete one.

It really feels like Gege replaced old weak characters with new stronger versions. Hikari and Choso are sort of the Todo. Yuta was meant to replace Panda and Inumaki. Maki got a buff by through axing Mai. Like, almost all the old characters are simply replaced. Hell, Hikari even has Todo vibes.

A lot of them don't get the development they need and in some cases like Todo some are completely forgotten about
Nobara was a main character but she barely got enough time on screen compared to yuji or even megumi, she barely received any character development, it was revealed her ability could harm the soul but then she 'died' soon after. It hasn't even been confirmed she actually died yet and even if she hadn't there's not much she can do other than maybe attack sukuna's soul and get killed by him
What's the point of Miwa, we see her struggles with being weak and her despair over Mechamaru's death. The conclusion to her story?, she's useless because she sacrificed her one useful skill for a super attack that did nothing. There's not enough time in the story to give her a new ability so there's nothing much she can do
Not all of the side cast need more spot light or development (Dagon, Hanami, Gakuganji, Uiui, Noritoshi, etc) but there are a lot of undercooked side characters

They did. Characters like Miwa, Inumaki, and some other ones I feel Gege didn’t know how to use them, so he got rid of them. There’s cases with ones like Todo, he had a good and reasonable send off with his fight with Mahito. However characters like Miwa? Inumaki? They barely did anything.
Inumaki had some good moment but he couldn’t do much outside of a few uses a day. So I get the feeling Gege had no spot to use him so he found some elaborate excuses to get rid of him and worst of all he’s still alive too. It’s not like his technique requires him to moves his arms so I don’t know why Gege just abandoned him.
And Miwa is even worse. Her binding vow was to never pick up a katana in exchange for her swing against Kenjaku to be super powerful, it didn’t work no she can’t use a katana. But uh…why can’t she just pick up another weapon then??? I staff perhaps? A scythe maybe? There’s are plenty of options.
Again, I feel like Gege had no plans to really make them characters and instead just plot devices that never served much of a purpose anyway. Just take Mai literally. She was useless, so she decided to be useful and make herself into a blade for Maki. That’s plot device right there, done right. But some of these other characters were straight up waisted.
Side character are exactly that SIDE CHARACTERS they aren't meant to be major players or do anything for that matter. Good writing isn't developing every character casual fans forget there a story to tell there's a larger narrative gege is trying to push. Character like miwa and inumaki don't have what it takes to convey that so far the main themes are ego and selfishness/selflessness and I can't think of anyway they can add to that narrative.

Such as one of the last battle in the manga, either wait till the manga to find out or stop reading, todo can't even use his ability and inumaki would be useless in this fight so it's not like they can join.

Looking at some of the guys who defend this in the comments or on reddit and twitter makes me realize WHY JJK is still so great for them. Not for its writing as most of these people don't know what actual good writing is, but rather because everything a traditional Manga does, JJK does the complete opposite. That doesn't mean it does it better just the opposite and people seem to enjoy this. Especially in todays social media soviety where young people spend most of their time obsessing over 10 sec reels or insta videos, JJK is the perfect series for them. No interesting characters but simply STRONG ones. No 'unecessary world building' but FIGHTS. No characters having supposed 'plot armor' but aimlessly killing them off in order to create an atmosphere of fear. And no nuanced writing but HYPE. Jjk has not only wasted its side characters but the main group aswell lmao Gege writing was never extraordinary but went completely downhill as soon as the Culling Games started.
Completely true its why characters like kashimo and hakari even with absolutely MINIMAL character writing and bland motivations are so popular, because they're strong and they're fights are hype their entire characters survive purely off of hype and what happens when the hype dies down and you get beat? You become kashimo, a "Fraud sukuna victim who was never 'him' to begin with" kashimo had one bad showing died fast and everyone IMMEDIATELY turned on him these empty characters that only serve to be hype fuel are what created fraud culture because you're only cool until you lose.
I always wondered why jjk was so popular. Even in the gojo fight, it failed to live up to the hype for me but I could never quite put a finger on why. I think you just answered that question perfectly

Miwa’s Nōdachi is coated in cursed energy. Anything inflicted by her sword has their soul tied to hers, forcing them to focus on her. Disengaging from Miwa in this state strengthens the tether; the stronger the tether, the more cursed energy than necessary they use is exerted, draining them of cursed energy.
Cursed Technique: Sever
When her opponent is severely weakened enough, Miwa can directly target the soul of the opponent and cut off their cursed energy reserve, forcing the opponent to rely on what little strength they have left.

I'm going to answer that with a resounding no. The interesting side characters have been utilised as well as any series except for one piece would use them. Todo, Mechamaru, Hakari, Kusakabe, Mei Mei, Higurama, Takaba, Kamo, Nanami, choso, Panda have all been handled good enough and been given material and backgrounds outside of the main plotline. Thats quite a solid list there and I'm even sure im forgetting another one or two names on top of those.
But I think once you start delving into too many tertiary characters you begin to detract from the main storyline, and you end up just putting extra stuff in your story just for the sake of having extra details in your story at some point. You can't work every single character, it isn't one piece. And a lot of the time what some characters in series like jjk go through is what you'd call passive development. Development that isnt obvious at first and isn't focused on, but then seen towards throughout the story when re-reading.

We saw what happened when they tried getting involved when they pulled up on Kenjaku. Not everyone needs to keep up with the power scaling of the series, it's just silly

Sukuna is the Main Character here.
I wouldn't called characters like Panda, Inumaki, Maki, Todo, Yuta, Higuruma and some of the Kyoto school students side characters, they're more like supporting characters. Side characters and supporting characters are not the same thing. Supporting characters support the main character, contribute to the plot and have their own arcs. If we're just taking about Panda, Inumaki, and Todo than I would say they're wasted especially Inumaki and Panda. Panda and Inumaki were some what prominent characters in the beginning of the series and were main characters in the four chapters one shot that became the prequel to the series. The wiki even calls Panda and Inumaki major supporting characters.
Dawg Yuta and Maki are practically main characters. They jumped to the forefront of the cast after shibuya next to yuji and megumi

You clearly don't. You say that you do, but you demonstrate that you don't by being upset by how he handles a wide array of characters. Not every character can have the spotlight. Not every character makes perfect decisions. Not every character gets off their abilities before being killed. This is how Gege wants the story, and there is no writing issue with it, you don't like his style or what he wants for his world.
Just one example of your laughable position is the character of Higuruma, Higuruma gave Yuji the ability to reevaluate his culpability for the Shibuya massacre, he gave him him hope. Higuruma, before he even appears to fight Sukuna, was a justified addition to the story. But when he shows up to fight Sukuna, you seem to think he deserves to best the strongest sorcerer in history? One up the guy who has killed thousands of sorcerers? Educate the guy who ran the gauntlet in the strongest era of sorcery and came out so bored that he decided to give the future a try? The lawyer who just got his curse technique a few months ago? That is the key downfall to Sukuna?
Moreover, the idea that he didn't do anything isn't even accurate. Higuruma did something that directly translates into them standing a chance in the fight RIGHT NOW. Sukuna is getting weaker and weaker and his output and control is falling. You know what would be really useful for him right now? A fucking cursed tool. Do you know why he had them in the past? So he doesn't lose via attrition. Do you know what he is most likely to lose to now? Attrition.
It is like you don't understand the story, and your lack of understanding is covered by your lame "OOOOO HE GOT THE KAMUTOKE BIG DEAL". Yeah, it actually was.
I overall agree with you and at the same not especially with Yuki and Nobara. Yuki was waisted to the point that this is just outrageous. She barely got any screentime, no backstory, no insight, no real interaction with any character aside Geto and Choso, literally nothing and just straight up DIES. Kenjaku’s "genius strategy" to escape just makes it even more anticlimactic because it doesn’t feel like that at all because of how random throwable it was. It just feels cheap, he literally somehow had conveniently a cursed technique that counter it and it was used only at that very moment and never again. It’s not even like with Yuki we weren’t supposed to expect at least more from her because she’s literally a special grade and had one of the most interesting philosophies and dynamics we’ve seen so far.
Nobara was clearly waisted to me. Like.. I kinda get that she wasn’t supposed to last long and that her cursed technique was too broken but is that really too much to expect Nobara to be something else rather than just a sacrifice for Yuji’s breaking point ? ( which Nanami managed to do way better to me ) Is it really that much to just expect a little bit more from the third member of the main trio and female mc ?
And what baffles me the most for these 2 is that some people literally just eat it up without at least questioning it a little bit just because it’s Gege’s writing style and that they "already served their purpose" while they were barely even there in the first place and should have been because of their respective positions ? 💀
I get that sometimes people are just expecting too much and having fantasies about some characters ( especially with Nanami, Gojo, Kashimo, Higuruma or the Kyoto students to me ) but it’s definitely justified sometimes. I was originally suprised and in a very good way when I saw that jjk isn’t afraid to kill its characters but now for some of them it just feels way too much and so unnecessary because we literally get the pay off without any set up.

I dont think there's any show that utilises its side character like JJK. Let's think bout it. Hakari and Maki are definitely side characters. Yet they play a pivotal role in defeating the main bad. Technically, Yuta is arguably one too. Takaba is too. Kusakabe, Mei mei, ui ui and Choso are too but they have vital roles. I think the problem is the side characters that are liked aren't playing doing anything important or outta commission.
Compare that to bleach or Naruto's side characters. They're just there. Imo anyway.
Unless inumaki has developed domain expansion or can use rct it doesn't make sense for him to be on the battlefield. Unless Todo can be healed of soul manipulation or miwa develops a CT then they're practically useless.

Naruto handled its side characters as well as it could. The issue wasn’t the fact that he neglected side characters it was more of the fact he neglected most of the side characters of part 1 or the really popular ones like Rock Lee. Part 2 instead chose to focus on a lot more new characters who could contribute to the story and world building a lot more like the other villages, Bee, the Kages, etc. It really only became the Naruto and Sasuke show or the Team 7 show in the latter half of the war arc.
When people complain about Naruto’s poor treatment of its side characters they just always bring up Lee, Kiba, Shino, Hinata (kinda), the Hyuga, TenTen (LOL), and Neji. Ignoring the other side characters who do get development in Part 2.
We all can’t be these insanely long sprawling epics that jam a ton of dialogue and is far more story focused than it is action (One Piece). Especially when this is a traditional problem with the Shonen genre that goes back to the grandfather of Shonen Dragonball being the biggest perpetrator of this issue.

the kyoto students dont even live near the tokyo school ofc they could have bigger roles w things but outside of todo and kamo they were always kinda useless even in goodwill half of them were more distracting than actual offense.i feel like a lot of series leave a lot of characters behind its generally just the main 5-7 characters that are important difference is jjk has changed that cast thats important and the characters left behind instead of just disappearing they are killed off..think it also stands out cause jjk is kind of a compressed series probably end within 300 chapters so they come and go faster

Jjk is a phenomenal story, don’t get me wrong. My fav new gen, and likely will be til its end. But my god does it have flaws. It’s like they introduce a group to hype up 1 person, and the rest either rlly don’t matter, end up dying off, or if they’re incredibly lucky get added to the main cast. Kyoto, and only todo matters. Disaster curses, and only mahito matters. Awakened sorcerers, and only higaruma matters. Resurrected sorcerers, and only Angel matters. Even special grade sorcerers, excluding Yuta since he’s the secondary protag, only Gojo matters. Yuki, Geto, kamo, Mai, miwa, Inumaki, Jogo, Uro, and even Kashimo are all plot devices.
Let me give an example, there’s the cursed tool manipulator from Kyoto. Her entire squad have either died, lost the ability to fight, or will to, yet she’s still there with the main jujutsu fighting force, and has significant cause to grow stronger since she cares incredibly deeply for her classmates, yet the reason plan A for the jujutsu fighting force fails is because of a cursed tool. Something she could manipulate if she simply got stronger like the rest. Even Ino is significantly stronger, but one of the most powerful CT in the series if actually realized, and incredibly useful for the final fight, is simply left out.
Kashimo only served to glaze Sukuna. Yuki only served to die from Kenjaku and inspire choso. Mai only served to realize maki with her death. Dagon only served to weaken Naobito. We have all these characters with significance to other characters in the story, and many main characters included yet all they rlly do is just appear, and push the plot forward, or fluff out the plot. Which is a problem, but not rlly a huge one for the story that gege is telling.
Gege has alr said that he didn’t intend for the story to be even this long. He’s beyond focused on the main story, so much so that there are no real side stories except arguably just the zenin clan, next to no world building, world development, and so on. It’s strictly the main plot which is completely fine, but he doesn’t rlly need to add all these side characters that are just forgotten abt, and used for plot convenience when it’s convenient, and not when it isn’t. Like Kashimo, the only reason that his fight w Sukuna was so hype is because Kashimo was SAID to be strong. Not to say he isn’t, but show us something other than him bullying panda, and ultimately losing to Hakari. Show us the ease he got his 200 pts at least a little (and this goes to more than just Kashimo, but ultimately the CG arc all together. Best colony was Megumi and Yuji’s because we actually see fodder sorcerers, a hierarchy being built by Reggie to gain points, and the result of a mentally broken awakened sorcerer. The rest of the colonies are just fights, and nothing important was rlly shown.). Maybe it’s just me, obviously Gege has a different direction than the typical Shonen formula in mind and again, that’s fine. I would just personally like more world building, and side stories, side character development, and so on.

I think part of the appeal of jjk for me personally is that these characters aren’t developed.
Characters like Mai, miwa, Kamo and panda are there to fill the ranks. There isn’t exactly a host of alumni from the jujutsu schools who’re hanging around. So I think it’s implied that 2/3rds of each years cohort don’t actually survive to reach that point of actualisation.
Because Gojos presence created a time of peace, there’re a bunch of these b-listers crawling around who would’ve been killed off due to the nature of the job under tougher circumstances

Miwa got replaced by kusakabe, inumaki got entirely deleted by Yuta which is so fucking sad like why not inumaku play a support role its his damn technique 😭 hakari replaced panda as the bruiser character that can hurt people uniquely with their special cursed energy properties like instead of pandas technique drum beating we have hakaris rough cursed energy (pandas sister reveal was so dogshit i dont know why gege likes hyping shit up to be ass "no one whose seen her face has lived" fuck outta here) and even kamo a mid tier blood manipulator got replaced by choso a higher tier blood manipulator and even then he got abandoned too. And the ones that stayed had to up their game yuji and maki entered higher tiers of strengths and theyre also pretty unrecognizable from their season 1 selves. It feels like everyone from the og season is gone

Yeah but atleast we got OG Naruto where we got SOMETHING. With Inumaki, Miwa and most of the Kyot äo Students after they're introduction we get litterly next to nothing. Naruto completely wasted some of its side characters later on but JJK doesn't even seem to care for a lot of them AT ALL if they fullfilled their purpose in the story. In Naruto most characters actually feel like persons unlike JJK where almost every character only exist as simple plot device.

You become kashimo, a "Fraud sukuna victim who was never 'him' to begin with" kashimo had one bad showing died fast and everyone IMMEDIATELY turned on him these empty characters that only serve to be hype fuel are what created fraud culture because you're only cool until you lose. Gege makes characters appealing through strength people like seeing these cool competent and powerful characters essentially its like everyone in jjk is an isekai protagonist, rarely interesting but at least theyre strong
