Frieren: Beyond Journey's End (Japanese: 葬送のフリーレン, Hepburn: Sōsō no Furīren)[a] is a Japanese manga series written by Kanehito Yamada [ja] and illustrated by Tsukasa Abe [ja]. It has been serialized in Shogakukan's shōnen manga magazine Weekly Shōnen Sunday since April 2020, with its chapters collected in 13 tankōbon volumes as of April 2024. The series is licensed for English release in North America by Viz Media. An anime television series adaptation produced by Madhouse aired from September 2023 to March 2024. Crunchyroll has licensed and distributed the series in North America, Europe, and Australia, with an English dub premiering the following month, and Muse Communication licensing the series in Southeast Asia.
Taking place in a fantasy world, the story follows Frieren, an elven mage, as she embarks on a journey to reach the resting place of souls in order to reunite with her former comrade Himmel, whose Hero Party once slew the Demon King.
By March 2024, the manga had over 20 million copies in circulation. Frieren: Beyond Journey's End won the 14th Manga Taishō and the New Creator Prize of the 25th annual Tezuka Osamu Cultural Prize in 2021 and the 69th Shogakukan Manga Award in 2024.
After spending a decade journeying together and defeating the Demon King, the Hero Party, consisting of Frieren the Mage, Himmel the Hero, Heiter the Priest, and Eisen the Warrior, return to the Royal Capital where they are celebrated and praised. The party reminisce their journey and watch the Era Meteors, a phenomenon that occurs once every fifty years, with Frieren promising to show them the sight again at a better viewing location. Afterwards, they go their separate ways, and Frieren continues her journey for the pursuit of magic.
A still-youthful Frieren returns to the Royal City fifty years later to retrieve a quest item entrusted to Himmel, now a much older man, for safekeeping. They reunite with Heiter and Eisen, with Heiter having also aged considerably, and they make the trip to the viewpoint Frieren mentioned fifty years ago, once again watching the Era Meteors and reliving their adventuring experiences together

That tweet from this Gumi guy actually brings up two good points on what I like about the show.
It's calm and quiet. Most anime have this high energy to it. But Frieren is relaxed.
I really love the show. But if someone says it's not for them. Then I guess that's why it is. Personally, I think the show is fantastic with the world building surrounding magic and interesting characters

@@therealogdaffy You should really give the show more time to cook before making hot takes. Watching 2 episodes is like reading the first 1/2 chapter of a book and then releasing a documentary on why the book isn't very good.
It's just sort of lacking in research.
Though that isn't the point of your video. More so the fans of the show. That's an opinion thing that's fair to have, I think. That said, I think you're judging the fans somewhat prematurely.
Edit: Only watching the first 2-3 eps is FINE, if you aren't into it. But not fine if you're going to make a video discussing the show.

    • @Nichols_Santa
      @Nichols_Santa Месяц назад +5

@@therealogdaffy yah, watching to prove your opinion and watching with an open mind are two different things.
You decided in advance you would not like it. On one hand said it had no action and then on the other you handwaved away the actual action and amazing animation at the top of MadHouse's game, and the equal of anything in JJK.
"Two episodes" when the actual action takes place in 4 and there is an actual DRAGON fight in 6?
C'mon dude. you never gave it a chance.
That's fine, but don't make it out like there's some kind of character defect in us fans of the Anime for liking something that you never even got past the starting line of.

      @Mizar007 Месяц назад +2

@@therealogdaffy I initially had a pretty nasty response typed out, but I took a breath and decided to take some steps back. You watched seven percent of the anime and decided to make a conclusive statement about the fanbase. Any fanbase is naturally going to become inflamed when you immediately say that you wrote a review with extremely incomplete information. At the very least, finish the first episode (the first 4 episodes actually comprise the initial release.) Forming an opinion in advance, then pressing forward to prove it is naturally going to irritate the fanbase of ANY series, and Frieren's fans as far as I've seen aren't even that aggressive as far as Shonin's go.
I simply implore you to finish the first episode before calling the series aimless as the whole purpose is building up to the central goal of the anime/adventure. That's all. If you say you don't like it after that point, you can at least say you stuck around to learn what the premise was.

Frankly the most enjoyable thing about watching Frieren: Beyond Journey's End is how very few character are screaming childs or adult with child-like behaviour always flapping about for every thing.. Story are deep, emotional, compelling even if they are mostly "mundane", characters are built by subtelties and idiosincracies not piecharts..
Most issues are solved by behaving by ration beings and not needlessly protracted to pad the runtime.
Every character has a unique take and they are not cardboard stereotypes or copies of eachothers, you seem them bumping heads and rubbing off eachothers, and some random sidecharacter have more story and personality than some main protagonists in other series..
people are allow to be competent and still be silly or aloof or even carefree..
An episode which is basically a review of a restaurant flies by as fast as a duel against mages and both have emotional, story and characters payoff..
Even the downmoments are compelling, there is probably not a single wasted minute of screentime in the entire show...
Art and animation is gorgeous and the music is just majestic
Battles are cool, compelling and you get the sense that those people HAVE to be calm and collected to wield those powers effectively..
In fact the only characters who are excessively talkative are demons and they are depicted as increadibly arrogant and deceiving..
you don't sense fighter are "showing off", every strike is calculate, not random,
they are professionals at their craft,
and even those with more "energetic" personalities are not randomly screaming, they are all in the "zone", even if some enjoy it more than others
Elves are shown kinda detatched and apathic as a default (maybe due to a different perception of time and interactions) but still with all kind of emotions and personalities..they simply show them in different and often more subtle ways..
And frankly nothing shows more epicness, competence and just shear badassery than a fight were the opponents are so engaged they barely blink.
Frieren cold dead set eyes during a duel are a fresh sight to behold.
It's how a being of thousands of years, countless experience would behave..
it's how professionals behave like they are performing their task.

1.) maybe know what an isekai is before actually talking about them, atleast?
2.) I agree with you to some extent. I love Frieren a lot. Like a lot lot. Its my favorite read of last year and probably my top 5 anime, ever. But I also never thought it would be this popular when I read the manga. Its a niche slice of life classic fantasy with action sprinkled into it(at first). It later evolved beautifully into a great fantasy story. The new popularity from the anime attracted the people similiar to the FMAB fanbase. People who think they are better than others. Frieren really does implore you to ask the questions and answer them by observing the character's actions. The person in the tweet wasnt conpletely wrong. It really does need a lot of concentration and rewatches to understand the full context and characters. But thats not going to happen if you dont find the surface appealing. And your taste should atleast match the surface appeal of the anime for you to be ready to dig into the meat of the show. Thats not going to happen for everyone. Everyone's taste differs and Frieren doesnt have the broad appeal Naruto or JJK has and even they have haters. I hate when people who call themselves Frieren fans or fans of anything blame others for just stating their opinions of the show. But the problem is when some people, unlike you, come to speak with "objective" facts about why Frieren is bad. Then its a different matter completely. I love destroying people and seeing other people destroy them.
3.) your whole video is a complete joke because of you bringing Vinland Saga into it. Vinland Saga fanbase is just the same as Frieren fanbase. Saying people who didnt like Vinland Saga are just babies and should grow up. That shounen brain rot has destroyed their attention span. Everytime Ive seen someone criticizing Vinland Saga, the exact words you said made you to think Frieren mob must be stopped were uttered by countless Vinland Saga fans. Do you really think Vinland Saga and Frieren fanbases are that different. Even Chainsawman fanbase utters the same nonsense that triggered you. Most of the popular media I love has much much more toxic fanbases(One Piece, JJK, Chainsawman) than Frieren and so I dont think Frieren fanbase is that bad.

None one will gang on you if you just say that you don't like Frieren because, I don't know, maybe the pacing of the show is not for you, You prefer more plot driven stories. I'm mean sure it's fair enough. Now if you just come out of nowhere and claim it is overrated, boring, trash or whatever, obviously people will get defensive and you better prepare valid argument to support your takes. You basically insulted what they like. Is it so hard to comprehend?

    "2 to 3 episodes in" BROTHER 💀
Just FYI the first 4 episodes were released in a batch, they were meant to be watched in one sitting, you literally didn't even finish the intro. 💀
I watched most of the video, and skimmed through the rest when it kinda got to be a lot of, "Yeah, but MMMM, ya know *tsk* It's not for me, you know?" Then it focused more on the shit flinging which I don't care for.
PLEASE, give it the first cour, or at least till Stark gets his fight (or till Frieren gets arrested, what's alluded to be a main plot is introduced there), it's boring because you aren't invested in the characters yet, rewatch and expect to be going into a LoTR-esque fantasy epic. It's like you started watching Mushoku Tensei and stopped watching before turning point 1, the hook you are waiting for IS coming, you are just still in the Shire learning about hobbits and wizards waiting for your call to action.
Don't get me wrong I love fast paced action shows too, JJK fucking had me by the balls(still does), but Frieren has toppled FMA:B on MAL for a reason, it's a story with a living world that does not exist to service the protagonists, it exists in spite of it's protagonists.

I know for sure there is toxicity within the Freiren fandom, just look at the comments on reaction videos where they didn’t react the way the person watching wanted them too. To elaborate because work is boring:
The first 4 episodes were aired as a single movie (how they were meant to be consumed). Their goal is to create real-feeling and believable characters that you can relate to on an emotional level.
From that point forward, the series starts taking things like action and drama more seriously.
I assume you don't mean the pacing is slow, but correct me if I'm wrong. The show's pacing is actually borderline breakneck speed, considering we cover two unique storylines each episode.

i think you would genuinely enjoy the show Frieren : Beyond Journey’s End if you watched it. you enjoyed Pluto, and Frieren is similar. you made quite a fuss and i gotta say, it’s incredibly condescending. not sure what exactly is bothering you here, but i can tell you that it’s not the actual show Frieren - you didn’t even give it a fair try. like i said before, there’s a reason they dropped the first four episodes at one time. and even that wasn’t enough for me, i definitely enjoyed it fine but it wasn’t until the last arc with the care that was given to each new character that i decided it was my favorite show of recent times. at least get as far as the arc where Frieren is imprisoned for her treatment of a demon. the show might be overrated and definitely has flaws, but Madhouse still adapted it to near perfection, and it doesn’t deserve the treatment it’s getting from people who haven’t even watched it past the intro - which is boring as fuck, btw.
you don’t have to like the show or the fanbase, but to criticize something so absolutely, you must at least know what it is you are criticizing. just watch the fucking show. give it 10-12 episodes and you’ll definitely want to binge the rest.

I think this a case of seeing the negative side of a fandom because you don't like the show, which is fair enough. I love both Frieren and Vinland Saga and to me, the latter's fanbase always seemed to think they were superior far more than Frieren's. I saw a video of someone saying that they felt S1 was better but they could see the appeal of S2 and that comment section was far worse than this one for instance. So it's weird for me to see a video criticising Frieren's fanbase and holding the Vinland Saga fandom as much better.
You are always going to see the superiority complexes of fans of highly rated anime you don't like because if you did like it, there is a part that would agree with them. Like how part of me agrees with them, Frieren is far better than JJK and you're an idiot for not finishing the prologue and understanding the nuances of that shopkeeper that appears for two scenes in episode 1, go back to watching people punch each other. JK kinda, you could have at least watched the prologue

I find it strange that you allow the fanbase to effect your enjoyment of a show. Also, the first 4 episodes originally aired as a single 2 hour special, so you kinda only watched half an episode before deciding it's not for you.
Hey, if you don't like it, that's fine, but be honest as to why. The show is very good for what it sets out to do, so other than to just troll, there's no real reason to go around crapping on its fans just because you couldn't get into it for whatever reason that may be.

      @Robin503 Месяц назад +1

He has every right to criticise the fanbase with all the glazing i’ve read of the show from fans..
Don’t you see the hypocracy in saying that he craps on the fans just because he didn’t like the show and recieved animosity from frieren enjoyers and rightfully called out their behaviour to other people that don’t enjoy the show, because you’re basically doing the same thing.
He also stated why he didn’t enjoy it which you must’ve missed..
Also i just don’t get the 4 episode thing, people usually only do give 2-3 episodes before they decide the show isn’t for them but Frieren for some reason is an exception just becuase the first 4 episodes aired at the same time?

    • @cah1-kr9eb
      @cah1-kr9eb Месяц назад +1

@@Robin503 The 4 episodes is for people that say the show has no direction. The first "4 episode" were actually produced as and aired as one 2 hour episode. So, if you're truly going to watch "2 to 3" episodes of Frieren, then would be watching the first one, that's the currently split 1 to 4, plus another one or two.
The reason he stated was basically "I just didn't like it," which is fine, different strokes for different folks and all, but doesn't require a whole video to say. The only reason to create a video like this is to troll those that do like it.

4:13 - Agenda deal? I am super curious about what you meant by that. I have some ideas but I would love to hear more about that in another video.
I have been trying to understand why this fandom has such a delusional superiority complex. There are so many shows where people say both good and bad things about shows while still admitting they like the show but with Frieren there does seem to be some kind of movement behind it. I have watched many videos praising the show and almost all of them are expressing the idea that Frieren represents the change to the status quo that they want to see in the Shonen genre. It is an agenda if you will, almost a form of activism. The show not just speak for itself, it speaks for the progress of the genre itself and so it must not be challenged. It's not that I am not sympathetic with that. I think a lot of people who dislike the show also are tired of many of the Shonen tropes but they don't think that Frieren is going to be the catalyst for this cultural change that some want to see at all costs.
It is very strange how "Battle Shonen" has now become a derogatory strawman word that is used to deflect ALL criticism on the altar of "subtlety" in regards to Frieren. I watched the entire Season of Frieren and I can confirm that nothing that happens after episode 2 is really going to change your opinion of the show. In fact, all of the very superficial faux-deep analyses of this show really are only valid for the first two episodes. I can go into much greater detail but I am not going to drop an entire essay in your comment section but the cliff notes are basically this. The premiere basically sold the idea of the show based on all of the concepts and thematic material that people most talk about. Time, family, stuff like that. However, after the first two episodes, the rest of the show barely does anything to reinforce these original themes and the problem gets worse further into the show. When you said the show was aimless, you are correct. It is clearly one of those kinds of shows where they will sprinkle the actual thematic material throughout seasons of the show while most of the show is just mundane and trivial slice of life that gives all of the comfort watchers of the show the "vibes" that they so desire. None of this is a bad thing but something that has been sorely missing in the conversation is context and that is because the agenda is hidden but it is definitely there. I am interested to get your thoughts.

It is very difficult, perhaps for want of skill, for me to explain the sheer brilliance of Frieren, because just like any other timeless work of art - Divine Comedy, Paradise Lost, Faust, etc - it will only be appreciated decades, if not centuries, after its generation. Thus, us living now cannot fully appreciate or understand it, because we suffer from a heuristic, post-latent modernity bias. But nevertheless I will try to explain what makes it the greatest work of fiction ever told. Ever. I’m not exaggerating. I’m being dead serious.
Frieren requires a deep, intimate, almost PhD-level knowledge of Kant, Hegel, Aristotle, Plato, Nietzsche, Locke, Hume, Hobbes, Sartre, Kafka, Foucault, Heideggar, Schopenhauer, among a few others to have an adequate understand of most of its themes. The plot is in effect a synthesis of western and eastern philosophy, which is a feat no writer has ever accomplished. It’s the definition of innovation. The characters are... deep. Just... so fucking deep it hurts. They feel raw, real, three-dimensional, and when I’m reading them, it feels like Kanehito Yamada is looking into my soul, my core, and lecturing me about the epistemological aspects of human nature. I usually spend my free time reading through Dostoevsky, Gogol, Derrida, and Laozi just to complement the psychological realism of even the minor characters, which any other writer would neglect.
The sheer dread, cynicism, and terror of the Frieren world makes even Golden Age Berserk look like a fucking Saturday morning cartoon. It’s just so, SO dark, so... black.Yamada's IQ must unironically be in the 99.99th percentile, if not higher.
Frieren is not a manga, it’s not a mere story, it’s an attempt to express the reality of the world and the incomprehensible complexity of human beings into a visual form (See Frieren vs Aura as an example). Kanehito Yamada has unironically surpassed Shakespeare.

Tried watching Frieren and i just didn’t like the characters..
Frieren was too ignorant and monotone for my liking to the point her obliviousness was hard to watch, people called her badass but i just couldn’t agree since she had the same damn expression in her fifth fight, If she doesn’t care then why should i?
Fern got mad at the most minor things and stopped their ”Journey” from time to time and that was so annoying to me like calm the fuck down.
And lastly Stark is a wuss and just takes the Fern slander without telling her off, i did enjoy him the most but it felt like he was ignored atleast in how useful he actually is and never developed beyond swinging his axe harder.

calling Frieren "ignorant" is certainly and interesting choice of words..
considering she is probably the least arrogant and second (or third) most knowleageable character show up until now and always strive to secure more knowleadge
on the monotone.. well is clearly part of her personality (or most elf apparently), and she clearly have others side to her, also how exactly would you expect a being that have lived alone for centuries to behave? i would have been more put off if she had a flashy personality and perfect people skills..
      i mean..
a lot of people seems to prefer loud and bombastic to calm and collect..
if a character doesn't have a "damaged" tattoo on his forehead how can i understand his behavious and personality..
frankly watching a competent people not flapping about but being surgical was a breath of fresh air..a lot of animes "excessive shouting and exaggerated movements" have started to appear very fake and forced to me..
But i agree that Stark is a bit underdeveloped (not much help in a mage training arc) and that Fern has a difficult personality which clearly Stark have problem dealing with..and Sein, and Frieren
which is TOTALLY UNREALISTIC for young teens to be irrational, petty and clueless in this sort of stuff..
      (the last part was sarcasm)
But hey often a show is not for one or his not the right movement, it's a slow, melancholic show where most character behave fairly stoic, breath of fresh air for me, annoying for someone else..
i mean there are people who watch "my life has inukai san's dog" and say "YES!"
