honestly looking back all of the dragons attacks can be summed up as defensive maneuvers. the fire breath. sweeping the ground infront of stark. trying to swat stark away from making contact to only have his claw shattered. once stark gets on him the dragon flies up trying to fling stark off. the dragon wanted nothing to do with stark

I love the way his introduction was presented. You first get introduced to Stark like he's some hero who fearlessly fought a dragon. Then it gets revealed that no he's a coward and a fraud, and THEN you get revealed HE is so strong even Eisen was fucking afraid of him, EISEN, the man who could jump 2000 feet off a mountain on a freefall, land on his head and be unscathed, is afraid of Stark. But the truth is he is STILL a coward, but he then eventually learned to overcome that cowardice nature and proved that his rumored unfathomable strength to be correct.
What a fucking rollarcoaster. And funny thing is the narrative never lied, only making vague enough statements to be bendable through context. Writing is superb. 🔥

I also like that every time warriors are involved, you hear that everyone of them was afraid at some point. this shows stark, that he doesn't need to be ashamed of his fear. realy a breath of fresh air from all those anime protagonists, who still visit school but have no trouble to face impossible odds all the time. usually the cowards in anime are here for comic relief or to show how amazing everyone else is compared to him. here we have someone, who is constantly afraid of his fights but by overcoming his fear, he is the most epic warrior ever

"A dragon is an intelligent creature, it won't pick a fight with a powerful opponent for no reason."
The thing Frieren says mirrors something that Stark said to her when she said why she wanted the grimoire.
"A Solar Dragon isn't something you pick a fight with 'for no particular reason!'"
Stark and the dragon are mirrors of each other. Two powerful beasts staring each-other down from their respective nests, each unwilling to engage in an unnecessary battle to the death.

It also shows that the dragon, a demon, values power and magic while humans value people, communities and life.
Despite the risk to it's life, it could not consider sacrificing it's nest ( a magical horde), just as straak chouldn't abandon the village. The dragon gained comfort and strength in it's treasures, just as our dear warrior did while living in the village.
Demons appear to be extremely individualistic, they'll work together but only in a magic, meritocracy forum that bars all none demons, like all the billionaires of our real world. While the humans are just us normal people, we excel through co-operation and are driven by forces beyond our own, personal, interests.

From the first time Stark makes contact with the dragon to the moment it is dead , only 30 seconds have passed in between. She gave him a time limit and he did the job within it . If not , Frieren or Fern would've certainly helped . I'm glad that Frieren usually doesn't just shove her students into the face of mortal danger to see their limit . She did the same thing with Fern and Qubal ; told Fern to give it her all to defend , it took a lot of effort but Frieren took down Qubal in a moment. I adore the transition between the two songs here. We start with "Fear Brought me This Far", which is very much Stark's theme, a song about courage in the face of pissing-yourself fear, but the moment Stark starts *winning* , We switch to "Zoltraak", which is usually Frieren or Fern's theme for when they're kicking ass, but Stark gets to share it this time.
Both songs are absolutely incredible, but I love their use to change the emotion of the moment on a dime, from "This dragon is terrifying, but Stark is facing his fears anyway." to "Nah, ya boi's got this, he just doesn't know it yet."

I feel bad for Eisen😢 he wanted to make Stark strong as a Warrior so badly that his body moved on its own to hurt his student😢. Can’t imagine how heart wrenching it would be. But it gave me chills when Eisen said his apprentice will become an incredible warrior.

NOthing secret about it. The first thing the dragon did was trying to get distance. If it had not made its home there, the thing would have straight up flown off and never returned

One of the great things about Frieren is that is features so little BIG action that the budget can really be saved for it.
We have this and the fight at the fight to finish exam 2. Otherwise the fights are simple and quick.

@@GameBreaker1055 the thing is that they splurge on animation all the time, even when theres no action. just the movement of hair budget is crazy.

This is genuinely one of my favorite fights in anime, period. But I want to elaborate.
First of all, the Dragon is afraid of Stark, but that’s not just something we can tell because Frieren said so. If you look at its moves, they all seem to scream “No, you stay the fuck away from me and my vital organs you motherfucker”.
But they’re foils of each other, Stark is afraid of the Dragon too, likely proportionally more scared than the Dragon as he is more powerful than it.
They never use slow motion between the first hit and the last, so it shows it lasted exactly 30 seconds, which is exactly how long Frieren asked him to hold it off, and he went above and beyond that. The length of time a seasoned adventurer asked him to hold off a Dragon, is how long he took to fucking KILL it. Don’t forget, it’s his FIRST TIME FIGHTING A MONSTER.
The fact that the dragon left the village as a “fuck this” move, and then we were made to believe that it just didn’t feel like it at the time, then it was re-revealed that, actually, yeah, the dragon saw him and was like, “fuck that shit, I’ll come for this town when old age takes him I suppose”, is just such a crazy turn of events that’s one of my favorite rollercoaster rides in the entire anime.
This scene and this fight, are so brief, and yet show the immense potential of Stark, and as incredible as the rest of the show is, they have yet to give him a showing as dope as this one. The pace of the rest of the show being so much slower than this I think is a choice to further illustrate the point that he fucked the dragon up in NO TIME, hitting it like, 3 times total maybe? I mean, smaller monsters have gotten more time to shine I’d bet.
All of that’s to say, I can’t wait until we see a bit more focus on Stark, if we ever do, and I’d love to see him at his peak, and if he ever becomes as durable as Eisen, he’ll likely be the greatest warrior who ever frontlined.
Truly, I think the greatest tragedy is that the demon king was dead before the kid was born, because I’d love to see the party eventually fight something so terrifying, and I want them to fight something that surpasses even the Hero’s Party.

Arguably the "weakest" warrior type Frieren has ever get acquainted with, and the man is still hella fucking strong.
Really puts into perspective how monstrous the elders were.
