I'll die on this hill: not only was aj green the superior draft prospect and right pick for the Bengals ahead of Julio, he was also the better receiver of the 2 through 2016. He didn't play indoors on a fast surface for half the season and had a far inferior QB hence the modest statistical difference between him and Julio during that time span. Green was more sudden and polished, and would have posted insane statistics in those seasons had he been in Julio's spot.
I’m convinced many of these picks were made “meh” just because of comparison with other guys. “Oh he was a stalwart on a team for a decade? Meh”. That happened at least a few times
Nah but this edge class was mind boggling - jj watt (first ballot hof) - von miller (first ballot hof) - Cameron Hayward (trending towards being a hall of famer) - Cameron jordan (fringe hof) - Aldon smith ( a head case that would’ve walked into the hall of fame) - Robert Quinn - Ryan Kerrigan - Justin Houston All absolute monsters that will likely be lost to the sans of time due to bad luck with accolades
How is Catonzo not a "Hit?" He was a good to very good starting LT for a decade. He singlehandedly carried the Colts O-line until they drafted Ryan Kelly, Quinton Nelson and Brandon Smith
Man, this draft was ELEVEN years ago. Doesn’t seem right. As an Eagles fan, I feel like this year’s miss really stings- it could’ve changed the dynamic of that year. I’m happy Watkins found his true calling as a Fireman, though.
Pro bowl selections are not that big a deal anymore unless you're the initial Pro bowl selection. All pros matter way more. Would be nice if that qualification could be made.
My dad's friend who grew up in Pittsburgh and adores the Steelers wanted them to draft Gabe so bad. He said that he was never more mad at a draft pick when they ended up drafting heyward instead of trading up. Fast forward to 2015, and he and my dad are sitting in the first row in Cincinnati behind the Steelers bench. My dad's friend started yelling at heyward saying he sucked and that he didn't deserve to be a first round pick... Heyward looked back and pointed to him. Soon after that heyward started to ball. I think that's just a cool ass story.
First 11 picks almost all became superstars. Marcell Dareus was a good player, he got drafted to a terrible Bills team and couldn’t change the culture much. Jake Locker was no doubt talented player and a good leader. Injuries and sacks destroyed him. Locker was decent when healthy on the field. The first real BUST with no excuse is JAX’s Blaine Gabbert pick. He was terrible, and given many seasons to prove himself. These first 11 picks are the best in NFL draft history imo
Dareus problem was he couldn't pass a piss test I mean the bills are bad but if you get suspended because you fail a drug test it's not the team being bad it's the players fault
Aldon Smith in played 43 games in his first three seasons and had 42 sacks. That's a Hall of Fame trajectory. That is a hit. Then his career was basically over, that's a miss. It balances out to a disappointing meh, based on what could have been. The actual pick was a good one, sadly it resulted in 2.5 great seasons and so many wasted opportunities for Smith. The criteria for this list isn't very clear. Is hit/meh/miss based on their career with no regard to draft position? If you take Costanzo at number one overall, is he a miss? I don't think a 10 year starter at left tackle is a miss. I think if you take him where the Colts did, he's a hit.
Getting Jimmy Smith at pick 27 is not meh at all, you have to adjust your rating criteria as you get deeper in the draft. Getting an 11 year starter at corner who helps you win a super bowl at the end of the first round is a GREAT pick, anybody would take that if you told them that's what they were getting.
Its so funny calling Smith "spectacular in the Ravens secondary" and then giving him a meh. Like I think they need to take into account draft position too, Smith is a hit just because of the high production as a 27th overall pick.
Julio was electrifying the majority of his career. He suffered from underthrows by Melty Ice nearly his whole career. No doubt he'd have more TDs with a qb who didn't have a noodle arm. Julio also made the catch to win the SB. Kyle Shenanigans sold the Falcons out with poor play calls though. I don't think Julio has enough TDs to be a HOFer honestly, I hope I'm wrong and they don't hold that against him. He at least deserves that after his last years in ATL. Melty Ice was constantly leading him into brutal hits, so no wonder his body is shot to pieces now.
One of the greatest drafts of all time. So many HoF and Pro Bowl players.

Brandon Weeden was 28 in 2012
@@mylesgarrett275 nobody drafting him
@@swizzychicken1357 What are you talking about? Weeden was a first round pick...
I'd give Adrian Clayborn a Meh instead of a miss. He was always serviceable and played well. Injuries got him.
This draft was AMAZING. Except for the quarterbacks lol
I mean cam?
Bro, this draft class was so loaded that I speculate these guys were around longer than 2011.
Such a deep and talented draft year that changed the NFL
I'll die on this hill: not only was aj green the superior draft prospect and right pick for the Bengals ahead of Julio, he was also the better receiver of the 2 through 2016. He didn't play indoors on a fast surface for half the season and had a far inferior QB hence the modest statistical difference between him and Julio during that time span. Green was more sudden and polished, and would have posted insane statistics in those seasons had he been in Julio's spot.
Don’t think you can call Aldon Smith a miss even with the suspensions, what he did his first few seasons was truly insane
I’m convinced many of these picks were made “meh” just because of comparison with other guys.
“Oh he was a stalwart on a team for a decade? Meh”.
That happened at least a few times
Yeah I agree. Teams are not gonna hold on to a cornerback as a starter for 10 years if they’re not at least above average
Nah but this edge class was mind boggling
- jj watt (first ballot hof)
- von miller (first ballot hof)
- Cameron Hayward (trending towards being a hall of famer)
- Cameron jordan (fringe hof)
- Aldon smith ( a head case that would’ve walked into the hall of fame)
- Robert Quinn
- Ryan Kerrigan
- Justin Houston
All absolute monsters that will likely be lost to the sans of time due to bad luck with accolades
Yup
Castonzo was a hit most underrated tackle in the league
How is Catonzo not a "Hit?" He was a good to very good starting LT for a decade. He singlehandedly carried the Colts O-line until they drafted Ryan Kelly, Quinton Nelson and Brandon Smith
Cam Jordan and von Miller still ballin at a high level
Man, this draft was ELEVEN years ago. Doesn’t seem right.
As an Eagles fan, I feel like this year’s miss really stings- it could’ve changed the dynamic of that year.
I’m happy Watkins found his true calling as a Fireman, though.
I'm so happy Von Miller is now a Buffalo Bill
Man the 2011 and 2012 drafts were filled with so much talent.
Man this draft was filled with either hits or misses, not too many meh picks. That just tells you how good this draft class was
As a colts fan, Anthony Castonzo was a major hit for us.
Pro bowl selections are not that big a deal anymore unless you're the initial Pro bowl selection. All pros matter way more. Would be nice if that qualification could be made.
This draft is absolutely loaded
My dad's friend who grew up in Pittsburgh and adores the Steelers wanted them to draft Gabe so bad. He said that he was never more mad at a draft pick when they ended up drafting heyward instead of trading up. Fast forward to 2015, and he and my dad are sitting in the first row in Cincinnati behind the Steelers bench. My dad's friend started yelling at heyward saying he sucked and that he didn't deserve to be a first round pick... Heyward looked back and pointed to him. Soon after that heyward started to ball. I think that's just a cool ass story.
My favorite players from this class are Julio Jones, A.J Green, Patrick Peterson and JJ Watt.
Nearly half the first round were hits. One of the best classes ever.
This arguably the best top 10 draft ever .
Prince Amukamara was on his way to a Pro Bowl in 2014 before he tore his bicep
Crazy thing is. . . .5 guys on this class has over 100+ sacks. (Von Miller, JJ Watt, Justin Houston, Cameron Jordan, Robert Quinn)
If Aldon smith played longer he would be there aswll, 42 sacks in 3 seasona
Andre Johnson is indeed the best Houston Texan of all time
Jordan, Ingram and Heyward at 24, 28 and 31? Incredible late-draft picks by NO and PITT. They really did their homework.
Watts at 11; holy cow...
Common saints drafting W
Getting Jimmy Smith at pick 27 is not meh at all, you have to adjust your rating criteria as you get deeper in the draft. Getting an 11 year starter at corner who helps you win a super bowl at the end of the first round is a GREAT pick, anybody would take that if you told them that's what they were getting.
Ryan Kerrigan was extremely underrated.
Its so funny calling Smith "spectacular in the Ravens secondary" and then giving him a meh. Like I think they need to take into account draft position too, Smith is a hit just because of the high production as a 27th overall pick.
My graduation year, Von the best player from this draft.
boy do i miss me some prime ryan kerrigan
It’s crazy to think this draft is so good that drafting a a player that is a starter for a decade or more is considered meh
The Vince Lombardi sound bite..”What the hell is going on out here?!” 🤣🤣🤣 #Classic
All of the top 7 (and 9 of the top 11) picks in this draft have had at least one All-Pro season? That’s insane.
Holy shit this draft was LOADED
