More About Dark Crystal: The Dark Crystal is a 1982 American-British high fantasy adventure film directed by Jim Henson and Frank Oz and stars the voices of Stephen Garlick, Lisa Maxwell, Billie Whitelaw, Percy Edwards, and Barry Dennen. The plot revolves around Jen, an elf-like 'Gelfling' on a quest to restore balance to his alien world by returning a lost shard to a powerful but broken gem.
Although marketed as a family film, it was notably darker than the creators' previous material, and incorporated several nods to the new age movement.

My best Dark Crystal memory was watching it for the first time on tv in my aunts cabin in the northern Arizona woods in 1997. The cabin was solar powered, so the picture faded as the sun set.

I was enthralled by this movie when I was but a child in the 80's. My grandparents had two VCRs and recorded everything they rented. So I had multiple viewings. It scarred me for life in a great way. I will forever adore it. I cannot wait for the new series. HURRY UP NETFLIX AND CO.

The Chamberlain skeksis' whimper was the best part. It needed that comic relief.

In 1982, I was a Senior in HS. I saw the film by myself, b/c none of my friends of family were fans of the genre. I loved it.

Just finished watching the series, and it was amazing. I remember when I and my sister first saw the movie. We were in elementary school and my older cousins put it on the T.V. My sister was scared of it at first but I INSTANTLY fell in love. This was about 7-8 years ago, and even though it was made for an entirely different generation of kids my sister and I were still able to make it one of our favorite childhood memories. Watching the series put the movie in a whole new light and it was most certainly one of the most advanced movies in its time.

I truly loved the Brian Froud influence on the film. This helped make the artistic elements of the story embellish such a magical world!

I remember seeing the documentary on how it as made back around 88 or 89. I remember the scene where they came up with the land striders. One of the puppeteer walked in on stilts one day, and it gave jim henson an idea for a tall long legged puppet. It was very interesting how they learned to walk on all four while on stilts. sure they had safety harness' on but for the most part they were walking around on their own. The harness only caught them if they fell.

Saw this in the theatres when I was a child. I was scared by some of the scenes, but loved it. It's one of the classics that I will be showing my daughter.

A beautiful film, full of darkness, shadows, brightness and light. I loved it as a young adult. I understand more as a maturing adult, and I continue to appreciate more and more the generous genius of Jim Henson. Suffice it to say, I love this film.

The movie is constantly being re-released on video. It's had a VHS release, multiple DVD releases including a special edition, and a BR release. There's actually two versions of the film, one being the original UK version and the other the US release. The US release is a conversion which runs a slight bit faster than the UK version and thus has a shorter run time. The US version is also brightened up a bit but it causes the colors to appear a little washed out. The ending titles of the two versions are the only noticeable difference, with one showing a blurry image of the Crystal of Light and the other showing a sketch of Aughra.
