YYZ
I was fortunate enough to be at this very show. Neil, and Geddy and Alex were such masters at their craft. Impressive to see them play every time. Personally, I’m glad you weren’t into them back in the day, because now I am able to follow along your journey as you discover them. Keep exploring! Ignore the negativity, keep finding “YOUR thing”!
🤗 Found that 'thing'! 🥰 Thanks for keeping up with Rush. 😁🐰
This so rocks!!!!
Seen rush 15 times over the year.thanks for doing great reactions and feedback of the music. It's cool my daughter is 21 this is what we played in the car and rush was her first concert. Great band miss Neil and being true on your reactions.
My fav instrumental from RUSH is YYZ❗ BUT I LOVE THEM ALL❗✌️🤟🤘
Good reaction! Thanks Justin. Geddy actually used to use his left pinky a lot more in the late 70s and through the 80s...untill he switched back to a jazz bass and started writing slightly less complicated bass parts. He also played a lot more pentatonic and just sort of streamlined everything the older he got...I think just to make the load he carried on stage a bit easier...more triggers on the keys, ect..and also by the time this video was made there were issues with tendinitis as well. No where near as bad as the health issues with Neil's body and Alex's arthritis but a battle all the same.
Neil has many triggers built into custom tom shells, so some of the drums you can see are actually just triggers. He also has a several dedicated foot triggers. If you watch his drum solo Live In Frankfurt, you'll get a better feel for where some of them are tucked. His riser contains, essentially, 2 full kits: one mostly acoustic, and one mostly electronic. The riser rotates depending on which kit he wants facing the audience. It boggles my mind that he can remember which side the Mallet Kat midi marimba is on for given song, because he uses it with both kits. The man was a genius.
Rush In the Mood. Studio version ✋🍻
Nobody does instrumentals quite like Rush... Perfection.. btw sir, never too late to learn and listen from the grand masters themselves!!
I love this performance so much, you can tell the three guys are having a blast on stage.🔥👍🤘🏻🎧
I saw this show in Cleveland! Was Killer. 1st half was whole "Moving Pictures" album
this was Clockwork Angels tour...Time Machine was the tour before with the whole Moving Pictures album...both killer
It's been a kick ass road Jamming to Rush for quite some time. 😊
🔥🔥🔥
Neils drum solos are always the hilight of the concert to Rush fans. With other bands thats when you head to the bathroom or the bar, not with this band. 😊
🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩
You should react to The Best Intro Ever................It's genius...........
I've seen a bunch of top drummers, but Peart is the best IMO...but I never really got into his solos like a lot of Rush fans. I understand what he goes for..showcasing different styles, techniques like his big band homages, etc. But I've always just been more blown away by his playing within Rush's music. His drumming in Xanadu just stunned me the first time I saw it.
I saw Rush 2 nights in a row in 1986 Neil's solo both nights rocked the house.
You hit on a great point. There is so much music out there, in a million different categories and styles. The average person probably listens to .0000000005% or less of all the music out there. I love exploring new music and learning about some AMAZING artists out there that would have otherwise gone totally unnoticed.
On that note I would love to see you review some King Crimson, especially their song "Starless" live in Central Park from 1974.
I know about zero King Crimson. Thats Robert Fripp and Tony Levin right? I’m not even sure whos in the band thats how much i know them.
@@JustinPanariello King Crimson has had a lot of personnel changes over the years. Tony Levin came on board in the early 80's, as well as did guitarist Adrian Belew. Their bass player/ vocalist on their 1969 debut album was Greg Lake, who went on to form the super group Emerson, Lake and Palmer. At some point Bill Bruford, the drummer for Yes came on board, in the early 70's. They were really out there, so to speak. Not everyone's cup of tea. Their first album, In The Court Of The Crimson King, is one of my favorites.
3:44 Was that "The Spirit Of Radio"? Pretty good!
Thanks to your dad...Beck Bogert Appice... yes! Next?
rush between the wheels
please:)
I hope you seen Neil at the near end hit the snare for a stick trick! BOOM!
Part 4 of the gangster of boats trilogy
If you like Jazz. You should check out Neil's buddy rich tribute.
Interesting how Alex switched from the Les Paul to the 355 during Neil’s solo..
Next song was Far Cry...
Hey, don't apologize for the rant, Justin. I enjoyed hearing a bit of your history, and it makes sense. Rush is my favorite band and I didn't start listening to them until my 20's. 🤘
It's a pity that you never saw Rush live. Not only were the shows fantastic (and VERY generous!) but the atmosphere was always so.…let's just say "aromatic."
The Main Monkey Business is another instrumental that I think you would enjoy. Cheers
The one thing for you is you missed out on seeing them live!
I do like an occasional request answered!...."Be Free" Loggins and Messina....I hope you dont ignore subscribers...Good Luck!
I thought you may like to react to Neil Peart's tribute to Buddy Rich. "jazz music" tribute COTTON TAIL.. IT'S UNBELIEVABLE!
malignant narcissism is a great instrumental, live with drum solo:)
Here is my Reaction to RUSH Malignant Narcissism w/ DRUM SOLO out today!! --> ruclips.net/video/X-vKCAkAvvQ/видео.html
This is a different drum solo from Neil's solo drum solos. (Huh?) I mean that his usual later solos had more of a drumming demonstration feel to them, especially with the Big Band sections he included. I'm partial to the solo on the 'All the World's a Stage' album.
I was alsolate to Rush and I remember thinking, at the time, how lucky I was for having the opportunity to experience three decades of music all at once.
Hahaha.... drugged out music. 😂
Great song and reaction! I dig your story, Justin. It makes sense that you would discover the "more evolved" Beatles later in your life, when your perspective on the world/life had matured. I happened to inherit The Beatles music from my older bros and sis when I was a little kid. The albums that I got into, which were my first Pop/Rock albums -- at age 6 or so -- were the early Beatles albums. So I did have a love of their earlier stuff and I only really started getting into the 1966 - 1970 stuff when I was in High School/college. I love The Beatles and I love Rush. My top two, right there! Hey Justin, please check out a live video of Rush playing a song called "Secret Touch", from 2007/Amsterdam!! Secret Touch is a from adrenaline surge of a rocker! The Amsterdam show (Snakes & Arrows tour) is a particularly good version! Check it out! **** Justin! I am editing this post to tell you that I reviewed the "Secret Touch" live videos from the Snakes & Arrows tour and from the R30 tour (Frankfurt, 2003) and I've decided that you may get blown away by the R30 video more! Both are incredible performances but...the 2007 version is more like a clinic on playing that song; incredible control and precision...just a Rush machine, playing that song. Great. BUT! The R30 tour version is just OFF THE CHAIN! It is much more WILD and on the edge. Neil is FLYING back there on drums and the German fans are getting scorched. Also, the R30 version has Geddy doing some of the best singing he's ever done. He sounds beautiful on this performance! Secret Touch R30, brother! You are going to get wrecked!
I suggest this song constantly. Not sure why it never gets reacted to. It’s a modern classic with an insane breakdown AND outro!
@@michaelkeller6223 I know! Incredible, intense Rush song! I had forgotten how insane the R30 version was! I had just watch S&A and thought that was the best version. In terms of the filming of the performance, it’s probably better than R30, but the song itself is more off the rails on R30!
Here is my Reaction to RUSH Secret Touch out today!! --> ruclips.net/video/Yi1hNO2yM3Q/видео.html
its called crossovers
Justin, who are your favorite Jazz Bassists? I'm huge fan of Jaco Pastorius, Stanley Clarke, Jeff Berlin, Ralphie Armstrong (from the Jean Luc Ponty albums and others), Percy Jones (from Brand X) and such like. These guys are the Uber-masters of the instrument, IMO.
Yeah listened to a ton of Jaco. Even studied with a guy who studied with Jaco. I love Ron Carter. I don't so much listen to bass players specifically anymore as I did when I first started playing... I just listen to music. The whole band. I like Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter.. definitely more of a Blue Note guy than ECM. Coltrane, Art Blakey, Thelonius Monk, Miles Davis.
@@JustinPanariello, awesome! Total Jazz roots. But, you have listened to Return To Forever, with Stanley Clarke, and guys like Al Di Meola, right? Al Di was RTFs guitarist and his solo stuff is always incredible, with the best musicians on his albums.
@@michaelbriefs9764 yes i know Return to Forever i was spinning it recently (Community post)
If you've heard of Pink Floyd or LED zeppelin, you should know something about Rush.
Don't fret, man. There is simply too much music out there, I guess people just look at your long hair and say "how is this metalhead bass player not into Rush?", which is probably how people judge others by the first look. Hehe. Drums solos are pretty much something bands used to do up until the 70s, and fewer kept this tradition alive further after that, especially in hard rock music like Rush. Big bands leaded by drummers also started to die out, and some jazz/fusion drummers assumed the same role, those more keen on hopping cities giving drum clinics became drum soloists. In heavy music, amost no drummer from newer bands do solos. It's mostly old school drummers, and a small percentage of them (that is still alive) still do.
Double bass. Pounds you in the chest. We all love bass in all its forms. :) Crossovers... So hard to do cleanly.
Watch his Frankfurt drum solo. It's not improv. It's a composition, which makes it standout.
Hi Justin! The track is "Leave That Thing Alone." 🤘
Hes already done that one.
Man I don't feel so behind the curve now. My main regret is not seeing them live and missing some of the great, earlier albums. Not having heard them until now esp. being a musician? Wow. I think the solo anything trend was big in the 60's and 70's, not so much after that. So you're exposed to a lot less of them, so you don't feel the need as much as my older group who heard them all the time. The Professor nobody can beat.
If you are a Bass player you would surely love the book Geddy wrote on the history of the Bass.......apparently it was a lot of work which helped him through the grief of losing Neil.
Are you already familiar with the Steely Dan catalog? If you aren't, your reactions would be very interesting.
I know a lot of their catalog. Definitely familiar with them and have performed many of their songs live. Favorite album hands down is The Royal Scam. (also obviously Aja and Can't Buy A Thrill)
@@JustinPanariello I thought you probably were familiar, with your numerous mentions of your jazz influences. I'm a Royal Scam guy, too. Coincidentally, the Dan lead me to seeing Larry Carlton (Abe Laboriel on bass) live, second-row-center, in '87, etc...
Like your channel. Shared perspectives.
@@hampyonce cool. Abe Sr gave a few masterclasses at Berklee i attended.
@@JustinPanariello Abe Jr's a drummer, right?
@@hampyonce Jr is a drummer. I was at berklee with his other son Mateo who is an engineer/producer/guitarist
Justin, sorry I'm commenting so much! You and Rush have got me fired up! As far as drum solo's, I'm a drummer so, of course, I'm going to love them, by and large. And I have listened to a lot of Progressive Rock and Fusion Jazz, so you are going to get a solo break for the Bassist and the drummer, in most cases, on some of those epic instrumental tunes. But I hear that you are, perhaps, ambivalent about drum and bass solos. OK. BUT! Hear me out: in past Rush reactions, you've heard me recommend you listen to live Rush from the 1976 album "All the World's a Stage". I told you that Rush Metals-out HUGE on that live album and it is considered one of the best Hard Rock/Metal live albums of all time. I am going to recommend that you listen to tracks from this album, in particular the Working Man/Finding My Way/Drum solo medley. First, this is early Rush and you've got to hear how freaking hungry and hot they were back then! Just ripping it up. Second, the early Neil Peart drum solo is extraordinary. It is fierce and hot as a blast-furnace! It is a full onslaught of a solo, totally unrelenting. It is a statement from Neil Peart that he is in command now. Please check this out -- audio only, not video -- from that classic live album! (OK, I'm done talking your ear off!)
As a long time Rush fan I totally get why some people can’t get past Geddy’s voice, for me it’s the same with Roger Chapman from Family I can’t even listen to a whole song.
Here is my Reaction to YES Roundabout with GEDDY LEE at Rock N Roll Hall Of Fame Induction out today!! --> ruclips.net/video/5aMsIv1LIKI/видео.html
Neil. Never
thought of himself at the best he could be he always looked out for other inspiration to improve, later in his career he sought out Freddy Grubber and Jazz great Peter Erskine for lessons ,
There's the old saw, "there's no such thing as a stupid question." It sounds so positive, doesn't it? But it's wrong. If you take, for example, the "why haven't you heard of (fill in artist)?" question seriously, then there's a fool at both ends of the call. Just let it slide and move on, maybe with a little shaking of the head, because you're doing good work. Keep it up! 😎✌️
Being a musician there’s handfuls of musicians that you just know about that are like the top in their field two of the guys in rusher in that group the drummer in the bass player the guitar player never got the recognition the other two got but he’s fantastic also but any bass player should know you know John and whistle flea Getty Lee just a mention a few John Paul Jones that’s just to give me Rush is a unique band
It's a shame that you have to explain to people how a career musician who has worked a zillion gigs and is prepped for so many different styles to be able to handle whatever is coming his way that night on the setlist could possibly not be versed in every band Under the Sun. People just get so caught up in thinking that what was common for them must be common for everyone... And to some extent it is an understandable viewpoint. But, as you said no one can possibly know all the stuff there is to have been exposed to musically out there.. So people might attempt to look a little farther than the end of their own nose or in this case their own ears when it comes to what is supposedly common music knowledge. I have to admit that since the rise of the reaction video there have been times I've been blown away thinking something like "How in the f*** do you not know that Beatles dong? Or "how have you never heard Bohemian Rhapsody before,?... This is your first time hearing Stairway to Heaven? I would have retired that f****** song off the radio 25 years ago... Not because it sucks, them suck, but because Classic Rock Radio refuses to acknowledge that any of the aforementioned bands have more than a handful of songs in their catalog.!!!"... But I digress. Anyway man enjoy the Rush rabbit hole because it is so musically rewarding. Cheers.
At some point, I'm not sure when because I started to take them for granted, RUSH kind of went into show-off mode and it was hard to appreciate them amongst all the other bands that were putting shit out. I'm not trying to put down great talent but there was so much of it in my day and not so much now....just trying to get a grasp of what I've lived through myself I guess.
edit : My first concert was David Bowie with 50K others
double edit : do 2112 Live, they practiced hard to do it again in their later years...if you do the studio version you will be totally blown away but I remember at some point you said you appreciate the live stuff and you really had to be in the 1970's to appreciate what this album was doing to people.

all 'reaction/reacts' videos on youtube should be renamed to 'how much i like' videos. Something you never see is a negative, or critical reaction video; its always a fluff video, and therefore 'reaction/react' videos are not really interesting to watch because I already know what the reaction is going to be.
While I mostly agree with you... You haven't seen my Buckethead or Dimash videos lol. Or my first 2 Rush videos. The people here like my Rush videos because I wasn't into Rush before doing these Reaction videos. They've seen my evolution from not being into Rush to finding the tunes that I like and getting that they are a great band with great music. Buckethead.... those people hate me over there cause they don't understand what melody is. Or they think I don't know what melody is. Anyways. All good dude... zillion videos uploaded to RUclips everyday, watch what you want!
