Military Retirement: Understanding Grey Area Retirees

- For people entitled to a Reserve Pension (technically a "Non-Regular Pension"), there is a tricky phase of their retirement process. That is the time when they are eligible for a pension, but not yet collecting the pension. This is the so-called "Grey Area" and its just one more complication for the Reserve Component experience.

News flash!..... DFAS no longer handles Air National Guard or Air Force Reserve retirement applications. Before mentioned MUST as of April 2022 register with and logon to (myFSS) non-CAC card logon because as you well know that as soon as you retired from the Air National Guard or Air Force Reserves you had to turn in your CAC card. You will find myFSS to be a completely incompetent & dysfunctional web site with unhelpful "customer service" personnel just waiting to not help you at all.
Ho ho ho...I can imagine. There is this weird part of the process where grey area retirees have to apply thru their service. Based on my interaction with the Army version of this office, they are not thrilled with the responsibility.
Going through the process now. Any tips? Thanks
@@k9companion231I am currently going through the process as well and had several questions about filling out the 2656. I called the FSS for the AF reserves number and got a message to leave a voicemail! Of course no one called back, I then emailed them my issues and they returned my email and setup a zoom meeting where tech and I went over every line of the 2656 to make sure it was correct. They were great! I have since submitted my paperwork with greater confidence it was done correctly and won’t get kicked back.🤞 I also called the Total Force Service Center and they were helpful as well.
I got a logon registration to myFss without a CAC, its a pain but it can be done.
@@glee21012 Never said you can't login without a CAC ID card. I don't have an issue with the non-CAC login on MYFSS, although as you mentioned, it is a "pain". Try down loading the required retirement DOC's you need to apply for your retirement. I have a relatively new MAC computer (about 3 years old) and I was told by their useless customer service that MYFSS doesn't play well with MAC even though I have the latest version of Google chrome as my browser.
The weird thing is in my entire military career I never heard the term “ grey area retiree” even after attending numerous retirement briefings. Thank you for explaining this and getting the word out. And yes, retiring from the reserves is a Non- Regular Retirement.
I agree. One day I just head it being mentioned and even the people talking about Grey Area Retirees didn't seem to know what it really meant.
I did 3 years on title 10 orders as a navy reservist and a deployment as a navy reservist that counts for age reduction
It does. Check out this video on Reserve Early Retirement: ruclips.net/video/t6y7t_yTfDE/видео.html
Most recommend applying about a year before 60th B'day.
Caution: That advice assumes no Active Duty Mobilizations. Many Grey Area Retirees qualify for early receipt of their pension. My advice would be apply 1 year before you are eligible to receive your pension. ruclips.net/video/t6y7t_yTfDE/видео.html
@@the_bureaucratgood luck with applying. Going through the process now and the system never lets you log in and the contacts never call/text/email you back. At a loss.
Can my area RSO identify (through my DD214s and orders) which AD orders qualify me for early pension? Thanks.
They can. Now will they? That seems to be vary by location. Hit me up a chuck.weko@gmail.com if you run into trouble. (and bear in mind that I am the unofficial & underqualified help).
I'm in the process of all this crap right now. The first retirement package I sent to HRC in 2008 was ignored. I was battling this to no avail while I was in. I finally got pissed and gave up. I stayed in the IRR and finally sent another certified mail (2024) and and got a response: Your grey area retirement is being processed and will take 90 - 120 days. Great. I am elated. Issue: I couldn't get a 20 year letter because I am dual service- 7 y 4M 25D USMC + 14 years Army Reserve. I was denied my 20 year letter. So I don't know what is going on over at HRC. I don't know my status in DEERS, I have no ID either. But apparently, they are processing my retirement....
Good lord. I'm curious about this situation. (The Army routinely takes Marines into the Reserves). Can you hit me up at chuck dot weko at gmail? I'd be interested to discuss more.
You cannot speak to a human anymore. Without a CAC card you are shooting 8n the dark hoping to hit a target. So frustrating
That seems to be getting more and more true.
They need to extend CAC to those in the grey zone then!
