Heartstung it's not Kate's version. Kate didn't cover it. Kate is the original writer and singer of this track. So, what you meant to say was, Maxwell's version is good, and the original by Kate Bush is good. A version means, a copy or cover.
The song was inspired by the Depression-era photographs of Dorothea Lange, showing poverty-stricken Americans in Dust Bowl conditions. Gabriel saw Lange's images in a 1973 book titled In This Proud Land. He felt that a song based on this was wholly appropriate to difficult economic conditions in England under Margaret Thatcher.[1] He composed lyrics within a situation about a man whose unemployment causes stress in his domestic relationship. The verses, sung by Gabriel, describe the man's feelings of isolation, loneliness and despair; the choruses, sung by Bush, offer words of hope and encouragement. Gabriel originally wrote the song from a reference point of American roots music and he approached country singer Dolly Parton to sing it with him. However, Parton turned it down, so his friend Kate Bush took her place.[2]
Accordig to songfacts.com it also stemmed from the following; -- Jill Gabriel, who was Peter's wife at the time, told Songfacts: "I saw an article in a newspaper about a woman who jumped out of a huge block of flats with her child and killed herself. I gave it to Peter and it was the original inspiration and he was heartbroken to read it. However his lyrics are always multilayered with many different influences."
LOVE Kate Bush, discovered by David Gilmour (of Pink Floyd) when she was 16 and introduced to American audiences on Saturday Night Live when Eric Idle hosted in 1978, and I've been a fan ever since. She's truly amazing, and huge in Europe, especially Britain, though not so well known in America, since she hates flying. Kate has a 4 octave vocal range. Peter Gabriel was one of the founders of Genesis who left the band at their creative height and never looked back, doing amazing solo work, and some of the most imaginative videos ever seen, but his music has never stopped evolving. Great song with two amazing artists, thank your for featuring this.
Kate's my favourite female singer/songwriter/artist... She's unbelievably talented. Night Of The Swallow is my favourite song by her, but there are more popular songs that others have suggested... Love seeing this. Peter is also amazing... ❤️
I noticed that while listening you were really deep in your thoughts as if this song really spoke to you... It felt like something had been troubling you a while and this song, sort of, was in support of you... 💜
I've been listening to one song after another all morning--how great to hear all these fantastic musicians back to back, and to see you enjoy them for the first time. Thanks
India, the songs you have reacted to in the past few months have really taken me back. A friend of mine was killed by her boyfriend the year after I graduated from high school. When she was going through many, many problems with him and before the end I told her not to give up. I played this song for her. It always reminds me of her and of what might have been. Thank you. Beautiful song and spot on reaction from you.
I will be your friend my dear I have struggled with depression for most of my 54 years on this earth ... sometimes all we need is a kind word or two and a virtual hug I am there for you
I love how you’re experiencing the greatest music of the greatest decade for the first time. This is how us ghost busting goonies felt when we heard the music when it was new when we were kids!
I love both of these dynamic performers. And that's what they are. They don't just sing songs, they perform them. Anyone who doesn't already know this - Kate and Peter were romantically involved for awhile.
No, they were never romantically involved. Both Kate and Peter have always stressed that their relationship was only ever professional. Rumors abounded but they weren’t true. Also the whole time Kate and Peter were working together, Kate was involved with her bassist/engineer, Del Palmer.
Great reaction. I've actually played this song when I was feeling down... Kate Bush has the voice of an angel, and her message seems so sincere. The video is a bit dated, but cool how the eclipse that happens shows the moon (darkness) blocking out the sun, and in the middle, when he finds resolve, the moon passes by, and it becomes sunny again..
Two amazing performers. This Woman's Work and Running Up That Hill by Kate Bush are a must. Just about anything from Peter Gabriel but some of my favorites other than this are In Your Eyes, Solsbury Hill, and Games Without Frontiers.
I have always tears in my eyes watching this music video. It's so simple but breathtaking, deep emotional, ... I have loved this song, the whole "So" Album, before I saw this video. And for me it is just wow, wow, wow!!! So simple, 2 human beings holding each other, turning round, and singing that song, and behind them the sun!!! Kate Bush: Hounds of love, and Peter Gabriel: "So" album were my favourite LPs of the earlie 80s. Have a look on Peter Gabriel: Secret world live. Song: Secret world from 1:11:40 to 1:22:06, it's worth it.
Life is about learning , you are 100% correct, but we can all fail....it's easier when you have the support of someone like Kate in this video. Sadly, not everyman has that
you need to listen to [solsbury hill] and [in your eyes] from Peter and from Kate you need to listen to [Hounds of Love] [running up that hill] [this woman's work] just a few of there best songs IMO
For the last 15 years, I had been battling depression and a very nasty accident which destroyed my shoulder, rendering me unfit for work. But I never gave up, knowing that things would be looking up for me eventually. And just a month ago, my high school sweetheart, who I always knew was the love of my life, showed up again, 25 years since I last saw her. I never felt so happy in my life.
I had to comment this time .I love your blogs. I almost cried with you when you reacted to Tom Jones's Never fall in love again. But this song from Peter Gabiel is the story of my life . And always makes me cry . If it weren't for my woman to remind me of all of my blessings, during times of famine. Helping me to get back up and fight to stand on that bridge. Even when the world is stacked against you. Wow what a powerful message. And you are a beautiful soul. Thanks
Kate Bush and Peter Gabriel are both amazing. "The Kick Inside" album and "Hounds Of Love" are very, very beautiful and there is so much in it. Peter aswell, "So" is very famous and "Peter Gabriel 3" has a very dark tone but still very good (Intruder with Phil Collins for example).
Been listening to this song, for 33 years, still brings a tear to my eye. Back when it came out the economy was in a big down turn, it was hard to get any decent work, this song helped. There is a really good live version with Paula Cole that is excellent, and a little longer version. That whole live concert is one of my favourites.
Both of then are a very unique sound and lots of song with meaning and not like anything anyone else does. You should listen to everything you can. Also as a random aside I love your hair
Peter goes way back - to the beginning of the band Genesis. His voice is one of the most unique voices in Rock. Check out Genesis before Phil Collins took over singing from PG. "Firth Of Fifth" is a great example, and one of the best prog songs ever made.
Peter Gabriel has one of the most powerful voices ever. I'm a huge fan from his early days with Genesis to now. Although now, unfortunately his voice has weakened due to age... he can't hit those high notes the way he used to. But check out the So and Us albums as a great place to start if you want to hear more.
Kate is one of the most respected artistes in the uk Try King of the Mountain, Running up that Hill, Bertie ,The sensual World Actually anything by Kate Bush is amazing and different from the run of the mill
It was about the miners in the uk, they had nothing left when Maggie shut down the mines. Terrible time here I watched this from my youth in London now I understand. They still have never invested in those places or the fishing ports we can’t take quotas like invaders thank god we are fighting back. I hope this gives a bit more information on this beautiful song.
Thank you for reacting so honestly to this beautiful track, I love you India ❤️ you are just so easy to watch, whilst you react to the emotional records out there 👀 and you've got to react. To more Kate Bush, like the last comment but also include The Man With The Child in His Eyes, an awesome track! Keep up the great work lady 👍🏼😘
I met Kate bush about 1981, she's delightful, like some magical elfin princess. Theres NO way he's not hot under the collar holding her that close for seven minutes, trust me.
Another good duet he did is with Sinhead O'Conner called Blood of Eden. Peter Gabriel did a few really good solo albums. Songs like Family Snapshot, I Have the Touch, The Family and the Fishing Nets.
Omg, Kate Bush yes! Do Running Up That Hill, Hounds Of Love, Cloudbusting, This Woman’s Work and Wuthering Heights
YES! YES! YES! YES!!! Love all of these!!!!!!
The Big Sky, Babooshka, Rubberband Girl, The Dreaming, Army Dreamers, she has quite the catalogue of great tracks.
Wuthering Heights! By Kate Bush. Pat Benatar’s version too!
don't forget "army dreamers"
Under Ice
You should react to Kate Bush with This woman's work.
Yes!
I was going to ask the same thing. This Woman’s Work is stunning.
Yes 👍
Heartstung it's not Kate's version. Kate didn't cover it. Kate is the original writer and singer of this track. So, what you meant to say was, Maxwell's version is good, and the original by Kate Bush is good. A version means, a copy or cover.
Oh yes

@David David White privilege is an over simplistic way of looking at the world
All dat huwyte privilege amiright?

So glad it wasn't Dolly. Kate Bush was so right for this song.
This was featured in the Willie Nelson and Sinead' O Connor video.
Kate Bush in an incredible and ingenious artist. I recommend Wuthering Heights by her
Pat Benatar’s version of Wuthering Heights is amazing too!
One of my favorite songs ever. I just want to be in a hug circle with those two. ❤️
I just want to be in that hug with Peter💓!
Kate, but wouldn't say no to Peter!!!
Amen Sister!
Peter Gabriel is a genius. :)
and gets better from year to year...
They both are and do.
I love Peter Gabriel so much❤
He is the ultimate!
Amazingly talented! I love this album beginning to end.
@Holly Odell me too.
Two amazing characters . Kate Bush is a truly amazing lady.
Elton John said that when he was in a really dark place with his drug and alcohol addiction, this song saved his life. ❤️
awesome story that I did not know about..., thanks
Same for me about 12 years ago.
LOVE Kate Bush, discovered by David Gilmour (of Pink Floyd) when she was 16 and introduced to American audiences on Saturday Night Live when Eric Idle hosted in 1978, and I've been a fan ever since. MORE KATE BUSH!! Love and Anger!!
That's my favorite of her songs. For anyone wanting to cry some, "This Woman's Work" might do the trick. :)
Two lovely voices.
They are so good together. Beautiful
Peter Gabriel is brilliant and a music journey all by himself.
I hadn’t thought or heard this song in a long time! Actually brought tears to my eyes! Great song!
Kate's my favourite female singer/songwriter/artist... She's unbelievably talented.
Night Of The Swallow is my favourite song by her, but there are more popular songs that others have suggested... Love seeing this. Peter is also amazing... ❤️
Beautiful song acted and sang out well by Peter Gabriel and Kate Bush. Good reaction.
I noticed that while listening you were really deep in your thoughts as if this song really spoke to you... It felt like something had been troubling you a while and this song, sort of, was in support of you... 💜
Kate Bush has a haunting voice. This song leaves me in tears every time.
Hello from Paris , Kate Bush the biggest and créative english artist of yesterday , today , and tomorrow .
I've been listening to one song after another all morning--how great to hear all these fantastic musicians back to back, and to see you enjoy them for the first time. Thanks
Both are icons of taste...Kate Bush gives me goose bumps

These two are absolute legends
Peter Gabriel...one of the most talented and innovative musicians of our time..listen to the entire "So" album. Amazing!
And the entire Security album and the entire Us album. He is a genius.
I love how you’re experiencing the greatest music of the greatest decade for the first time. This is how us ghost busting goonies felt when we heard the music when it was new when we were kids!
They worked together quite a few times. They were friends and kindred spirits. Two amazing artists. Artists in the truest sense of the word. :)
I love both of these dynamic performers. And that's what they are. They don't just sing songs, they perform them. Anyone who doesn't already know this - Kate and Peter were romantically involved for awhile.

Two great British artists
Kate Bush - The Sensual World, Moments of Pleasure.
Yes, he is holding her tight! Just like a hug should be given ;)
lookup the welsh word cwtch
Two great voices!
Great reaction. I've actually played this song when I was feeling down... Kate Bush has the voice of an angel, and her message seems so sincere. It's interesting they collaborated to do this song, because to me they are similar artists... very eclectic, and talented.
Peter Gabriel, the composer, the poet, the singer the songwriter, performer and artist
Love this song... always brings me to tears...just beautiful
This song gives me chills it's so beautiful
Kate Bush, to me, is how an angel sounds
Two amazing performers. This Woman's Work and Running Up That Hill by Kate Bush are a must. Just about anything from Peter Gabriel but some of my favorites other than this are In Your Eyes, Solsbury Hill, and Games Without Frontiers.
I've been watching your videos for years, but not often commented. This has got to be the best reaction to this song I've seen.
Peter is my favourite solo artist, this live is amazing.
For more of his try "In your eyes" "Shaking the tree" "Salisbury hill"
Solsbury Hill. Salisbury is a town (or a steak). Solsbury was an iron age hill fort.
That whole CD "So" by Peter Gabriel is extraordinary -- 1985 album of the year.
That song always gives me chills. Thank for your react, long life to you. 😘
Gabriel is brilliant and now you know the reason we refer to her as The Divine Kate Bush.
Everybody needs more Kate Bush in their lives
Peter Gabriel believed in putting a lot of thought into his music, not so much into album titles. His first 4 solo albums were titled "Peter Gabriel."
So?
@@docsavage8640 clever. I see what you did there
I have always tears in my eyes watching this music video.
It's so simple but breathtaking, deep emotional, ...

I don't think PG has written a bad song in his life but the one that moves me to tears ever time is Biko
Sean Gilbert yes I saw him do it live -goosebumps
it helped me so much in my teens... and never failed to make me cry to intensely...
Love your reaction and wise words... You helped me tonight.
Life is about learning , you are 100% correct, but we can all fail....it's easier when you have the support of someone like Kate in this video. Sadly, not everyman has that
Love this song, you don't hear it too often anymore
Kate's part really makes me weep. I wish someone would sing to me like that.
you need to listen to [solsbury hill] and [in your eyes] from Peter and from Kate you need to listen to [Hounds of Love] [running up that hill] [this woman's work] just a few of there best songs IMO
Totally definitely agree, especially about Kate!
Late also does back vocals on Games without frontiers, another PG song.
These two are legends in their own right but together it's a real treat. love this video (big hugs)😭 Dont give up.
Love your reaction.

Everything Peter Gabriel writes is beyond the pale in deep.
There's is sincerity in this video that's why it's touching.
The "Play" DVD by Peter Gabriel should be in everyone's music library. Such a unique music style.
An inspirational song that i believe saved many lives, i always play it in my black days. Life after Genesis
KATE BUSH - "this womans work" (its the original). It's amazing!
BTW his voice is whooo, fantastic!
You should do more Kate Bush, like Wuthering Heights, This Woman’s Work and others. Also Peter Gabriel. Two distinct and beautiful voices
Yes..especially wuthering heights..her best work..
Don1970 This woman’s work ... breaks me every time. Do this one.
I'm a big fan of Peter, even when he was in Genesis. But I've never heard the song. Thank you for that. It was beautiful
pg has been the most important artist in my life. From his days with Genesis on through his solo albums - it has been a beautiful journey.
Been listening to this song, for 33 years, still brings a tear to my eye. Back when it came out the economy was in a big down turn, it was hard to get any decent work, this song helped. "So" is a fabulous album. I LOVE Peter Gabriel.
This song released 1 year after my son died he was 15 months old. The song really helped me out.
Not only do they sound great together, they look great together. Like a real couple.
Loved this back in the 80's and it's still wonderful. Peter Gabriels voice is gorgeous.
Kate Bush also did backup vocals for Peter Gabriel’s Games Without Frontiers (Jeux Sans Frontiers)
That was the 80"...everyone cared about each other. This whole album is great.
Tony Levin on bass. Kate Bush is an artist certainly worth of to check out as well in her own right. :)
The man has some strange videos. Watch sledgehammer sometime. My favorite songs of his is In Your Eyes. Pretty song though. Great reaction.
Digging in The dirt, BigTime to mention a few deep meanings
India, as I watched this I began to weep. I have known the song for years but your commentary really touched me, sister.
Peter goes way back - to the beginning of the band Genesis. His voice is one of the most unique voices in Rock. Check out Genesis before Phil Collins took over singing from PG. "Firth Of Fifth" is a great example, and one of the best prog songs ever made.

my 2 fav artists collaborating, I couldn't believe it when it came out..in my top ten..great reaction and analyse, well done!
Both their voices are so beautiful. I agree about This Woman's Work! Thank you so much, your videos bring me so much comfort and joy. 💜
It was about the miners in the uk, they had nothing left when Maggie shut down the mines. Terrible time here I watched this from my youth in London now I understand. I adore this song - this whole album is really great. Reminds me of my childhood.
Beautiful song!
You nailed it, great reaction...Kate Bush: Sat in your lap....a whole ‘nuther side to Kate!
A lovely song and timely message.
Thank you for reacting so honestly to this beautiful track, I love you India ❤️ you are just so easy to watch, whilst you react to the emotional records out there 👀 and you've got to react. When life gets to you, there is music. You are a wise lady
Such a beautiful and sad song.
I remember the song being a little longer; the ending was moving and worth including in the entire listening experience.
Another good duet he did is with Sinhead O'Conner called Blood of Eden.
Peter Gabriel did a few really good solo albums. Songs like Family Snapshot, I Have the Touch, The Family and the Fishing Nets.
Peter Gabriel “Solsbury Hill” is a gem!
This song helped me through middle school!😃😀✌🏾✌🏿✌🏻
I really love this song. ...still
Today I learned that the warm, plucky sound that sets the mood of the song was...a bass guitar with a diaper crammed under the strings!
