Alex’s in-depth knowledge of MB power plants is amazing. His work ethic and sheer enthusiasm for anything automotive are equally impressive. Good luck finishing the build!
Why is one of those oil pans coated (black) and the others just bare metal (grey)?
@@chrismason6857 i have the same doubt
@@chrismason6857 I think you want to ask this question of Alex and not me. Typically, aluminum oil pans have a baked on black finish on the inside, but I thought MB oil pans were steel with powder coating.
Single-handedly, one of the most well produced video of a high-tech engine, build on RUclips! I’m almost scared to ask what the combined man hours are between you and rusty. And what kind of money you have in parts! Incredible job!👍
If you want to see really detailed videos on these engines go to the channel of Tasos Moschatos- he is a master engine builder.
@@skeetamacgyver1821 I second this.
Why is one of those oil pans coated (black) and the others just bare metal (grey)?
With enough time, this channel will be Legit Street Engines
Hey Don't Give him more ideas 😁
HA!
Good
Im waiting for legit K swap channel.
Better start buying more merch!!! These AMG engines don't grow on trees!
Alex, keep up the great work. I ran across your channel about 2 yrs ago at my deployed location. You and a couple other RUclipsrs inspired me to get wrenching again. I’m a 21 year soon to be retired USAF vet taking care of my mom who has stage 4 cancer. I’ve got some projects myself and very enjoyable and time consuming. Just wanted to say you’re a straight forward guy. Great content!
Dude, this engine is looking wicked! Glad a real expert like yourself is doing it justice but PLEASE get some sleep man. Sleep is crazy important, especially before you head back, take care bud!
Seconded. The last thing anyone wants is you driving off the road due to fatigue.
unbelievable, you and the people working with you do go the extra mile. thank you.
Thanks again Alex for another great video. You make this stuff look so easy. You also inspire confidence that I could do it myself.
Another Great time with Alex! Thank you so much for allowing us to be apart of this giveaway! We are excited for the winner of this Amazing C63! Hand-built by the best guys I know! Thanks for all the support from the Legitstreetcars community! We appreciate everything! -Craig
You guys rock! Thanks for being awesome and can't wait for our next project!
Absolutely love the detail! This is what most other channels miss. Engine builds are by far the most interesting car stuff I love to watch!
I must say, it's quite unsettling that there's so many internal parts on this engine that are sensitive and break easily or wear out easily. This is a Mercedes Benz, you're not supposed to have so much easily broken internal parts.
That being said, I just love your attention to the smallest detail... You're a mechanic, one can trust with one's life!
most do not break. it al comes down to the user and how he takes care of engine, remember he is buying used engines? There's a reason they are for sale and he needs them to have issues or he wouldn't have content. I have 3- M156 and they are truly remarkable
Mercedes-Benz is nowhere near what it used to be. Their reputation was made based on the w118, w123, w126, w124, w140, etc. From about the year 1999 onwards the corporate pennypinchers caused a steady decline in quality. Same for bmw. Same for volvo and jaguar. From then on the quality King was Lexus.
Producing and selling new stuff is what keeps your revenues up, not the upkeep of old products.
ummm….modern engines making more than 500hp their factories are ALL complicated.
If you have never owned one, driven it at speed…umm, nuff said?
BTW…CTS-V motors, Vette motors, Hell Cat motors….ummm don’t even think Honda, Acura or Lexus offer these ho numbers from their engines which are also complicated….
I agree, who the f#@k thought it was a good idea to have plastic internal engine parts, and I've never accepted that belief that timing chains stretch. I call BS on that one, a timing belt ok, but not a damn metal chain.
God bless you for being the person that loves their job, which is working on pain in the ass engines. It's also weird not having Peter around and making you taste try things.
I miss Peter too. He'll be back next week!
Alex is at his best, and so is his content, when working on a Mercedes. Things get even better when it’s an AMG model!
Do you think I'll make it home?
Yes because you are the best!
You got this Alex the amount of certain no hopers you have have got back to chicago this one won't defeat you...... Time to watch and find out! Big love from the U.K.
It's a Mercedes sure with a capital S
Offcoarse, it’s a mercedes👍🏻 can you explain why mercedes v8’s sound different than any v8?
Yes forsure
I've been waiting quite a while to see new updates on this one I absolutely love it. And I have faith that you will make it home within no problems

Its this options work for Mercedeses
if only the carly was actually useful, i have 3 cars, the vw it can code stuff but my saturn i can't even read a code and my jeep it could only see 1/8 codes i have
Yea after sleepin it off😂
Love your never give up attitude definitely the best car channel on RUclips just keep doing what you’re doing.

Oh man this is the car I've been waiting for..lol. I really love this car and I'm really interested in it coming back to life!
Legendary DIY guy - most dealerships couldn't pull off what you're doing.
Alex isn’t a DIY guy
Dealerships don't want to do it, they rather sell you a new car
@@trentryan27 Huh?
Hard to call Alex a DIY guy, dude went to technical schooling for this, has a decade of Mercedes A tech dealership experience and was still working on municipal fleet stuff before RUclips.
Dealerships can do this. Trust me
I've been a tech for a long time and I guess lots of us are just used to combustion engines, and because we understand how they function it seems like they are simple, but when you really take them apart you see how incredibly complex and detailed they are and how amazing of a feat of engineering they are. I've never taken apart a cam phaser even though I've changed dozens. Just the machining of it is such an intricate masterpiece.. and while we know it's all done by programmed machines at this point, the first one ever done was done by a person by hand or with multiple trial and error runs. Truly unbelievable and it's why I'll NEVER get rid of my cars when the electric world has taken over.
I am glad to see you're finally getting closer to getting this done. I can't wait for you to drive this monster home. Looking forward to seeing how that trip goes
I love watching these video and I’ve even started working on cars myself because of it, even when I’m depressed and feeling down I can always look at his videos and learn something, continue to do what you are doing and thank you for helping me
I've been waiting soooooo long for this video. I am on pins and needles to see how this build ends and who the lucky winner would be. Great job guys. This is my favorite channel by far.
Alex, you amaze me with your engine knowledge and how you take care of all the nuances involved with these engines. Very entertaining for a guy with no engine knowledge.
We love these long videos where you get straight to work and making it entertaining🤝
Awesome video! Love your applied skills, energy, and dedication to what it is that you're doing. Not to mention your community service. You are head and shoulders above any other automotive channel that I'm aware of! Don't burn yourself out!!
Nice Job! Excited to see it back in the car and to see what you guys do with tuning. I will say I would have upgraded those cam adjuster bolts though. One stretched pretty easily on me when I tried reusing the hardware first time.
But aren’t all the stretch spec bolts NOT to be reused?
@@shakeydavesr definitely not supposed to
Perfect listening material to get through the work day. Thank you as always!
I keep my fingers crossed every time you post about this car, it’s such a great looking vehicle, it’s just a shame about how much not good luck you have with it. I’ll keep watching hoping you find a good engine for it soon, without wasting any more money
Hey Alex a really nice way to get the guide pins out is putting a. few nuts and washers on the bolt you put in and that pushes against the front cover and takes them out easy
Appreciate your patience when things go awry! I would have lost my sh*T at least once during the multi engine process!
I'm an OG with a 97 E320 I call her dimples due to hail damage but I would love to have entered this contest for this beautiful M 156. I love how you explain things and make them so much more interesting.
Love the show, have you ever considered doing a viewer's car? I would love for you to get your hands on my project. Keep up the good work 👏
Best Reality Show for motor heads I have seen for a while, please just keep being yourselves.
Oh boy, that was a lot of RTV! I'd be woried about clogging up the pick-up. Migh be worth checking the bearings, but those cam caps looked good, so most likely no worries there. Not a big fan how on modern engines you need specific tools to work on them. Love how every part Alex touches has some factory defect with it :DD Good old M113. Loving the series tho! Keep it up man!
At least it isn't a BMW engine with their seals that fail prematurely and rod bearings that are a maintenance item...
Nobody ever lets the shit properly set-up before they just go to torquing the parts either....
I thought so too, but you can see the inside of the pan after he installs it, the bead doesn't seem to squeeze out as much as I thought it would so it should be fine. I guess they wiped it down to a thin enough layer.
Alex! Is that legit?? Almost 900 subs?! YES SIR!! Keep er goin
Glad to see you're working on Mercedes again!
It's why I came to his channel in the first place.
Hi Alex, you nearly wacked the hell out of Rusty with that harmonic ballancer. :)) Love this model of car and even that engine with all it's, let's call them quirqs and not faults. :))
I may not have a chance of winning, but to see someone put this much effort back into a vehicle. Definitely makes me want to enter.
Mid-week mid-day content, RIP the work I needed to get done, today
Hey, been watching since the beginning of the series !!! love this and it’s my attainable dream car . love the german muscle . These cars were just the beginning and set the standard of a super sedan
Wow setting the timing on that motor is AMAZINGLY simple!! Hondas aren't terrible but man they are annoying! Oh well
The smiles on you guys are priceless Alex! Another well done video and thank you for making my day. Never owned an MB but I do love NA engines, there's just nothing that compares to the old school style. I'll be entering for sure and hope I'll be the lucky guy. Great job as always Alex👍🏼
You wouldnt believe it ,i just started watching your video pretty pretty happy with myself ,my LS1 yesterday started making the dreaded lifter tik and my heart sank ,stuck lifter it sounded awful ,went to my parts store for advice and purchased Liqui Moly Tappet Stop Noise ,within 28 seconds the top end is quiet as a church mouse its amazing ,its a sign from above
Should be fun installing and finding out about the other problems it may or may not have. Thanks a lot of work for ya but I’m glad to watch 😊
You inspire me Brother. That’s why I decide to change my channel over to my cars and I actually did some repairs on my E63s once I’m out of time out I will post it.
Wow, Alex!!! That is one incredible "how to" for that engine... actually, it's a great guide as to how you should approach any engine (re)build.
I've never had the fortune to actually do that work except for helping a buddy of mine waaaaay back build a monster Pontiac 421 with a high lift cam, tunnel ram and a pair of 780 Holleys. Of course, it took a few days to sort it out. With 13.5:1 pistons and the high lift cam, we kept bending pushrods. So, we opted for a lower lift cam and it lived, much to the chagrin of the owner of the gas station across the street whose alarm we were setting off at midnight. That old GTO had a roll cage, full tilt welded steel front end, etc, etc. He sold it after winning one race.
Have you ever done a video on a head replacement on a 2004 MB SLK230 SC? I'm trying to do my own buy would really like your advice and / or tutorial... your skills are unmatched on Mercedes-Benz!!! Thanks for GREAT VIDEOS!
Yes been waiting for the follow-up on this one!
i love the attention you put in re-installing these parts...
My sons c300 was totaled in a blizzard thankfully he ended up ok! This is his dream car which he is working his ass off to attain! Love the channel watch like and share comments constantly! If you see this post by chance know a 20yo young man would love and appreciate/care for this car!
Alex’s journey with getting this thing back in action required more miles than the replacement engine had on the odometer….how’s hat for irony. That thing is a beast of a ride for sure when all is working. Another fun LSC escapade.
Here's the last video on this car! Its done! ruclips.net/video/6pUx7oC2f0A/видео.html
Thanks for taking such good care of my future car!!
You should always put grease / oil on the threds and the underside of the head of the headbolt for when you torque the bolts down if theres no grease it can grab and give you a false torque reading and it will not be torqued to specified torque setting ….. any mechanic should know this … garuntee those bolts are not torqued correctly
good job guys, very impressed with your knowledge and passion!! Mercedes parts didn't use to wear out back in the day!!
God bless,
My old school torque wrench from my grandfather is two sided. It has 1/2" on one side and 3/8" on the other side.
I have a decent 1/2" torque wrench for critical nuts and bolts and then I have a full set of Harbor Freight torque wrenches. I have the 1/2", 3/8" and 1/4".
What a time for a fire alarm 😆, Great work Alex and Rusty. Brilliant content.
Wayback in the early 80s my first technical tool was a beam style torque wrench. Around that time is when I started working on my own car. My brother-in-law had a late 70's f-150 that needed a clutch. My brother-in-law asked if he bought a repair manual could I changed out the clutch.
I'm reading a manual I knew we needed a couple of special tools a torque wrench was one of them. The other tools we could rent right from the parts store. At that time none of them rented torque wrenches. It was a easy job and after that my confidence went through the roof.
I still have that torque wrench to this day. My brother-in-law gave it to me and told me that if he ever needed to use it again more than likely it would be me needing it to help him.
I am amazed by how technology has changed in a simple tool like a torque wrench.
All my friends tease me today's day about all the tools I have now in my garage. I always tell them if the space shuttle was the land in front of my house I want to make sure I had the right tool to fix it and send it back into space.
I'm glad to see that you were still doing your own work. There was another RUclips channel similar to yours that went downhill quickly in the last 6 months. I won't mention the name. It's basically is now a person who buys cheap cars and instead of fixing them himself he now basically takes them to the shop. He films the mechanic doing the work that he used to do on his channel. I always thought that was funny since I can ride down the street and watch any mechanic fix a car. Most people like myself want to see how people do things in their own garage at home.
I am aware there is something that have to have a specialist.
I'm just glad to see that you still get your hands dirty on all your cars. I understand when you're hundreds of miles away from home you are limited to what you can do.
Really looking forward to seeing the next video on this car. The best part of any engine build it when you first start the engine.
Enjoyed the magic. A great video in spite of the lack of restful sleep. Thank you.
I love seeing you working on your first loves, the mighty AMGs.
Been waiting for this thanks guys! All this work and no sleep .
I love this dudes passion and drive. That's one reason this channel has taken off like it has.
24:00 you should have done your trick with the string and grease to keep the carbon build up out of the gap in the position and cylinder wall!
After doing that last torque, I think that wrench needs to be re-calibrated... Looked like you guys were going snap that thing in half!!! Holy hell thats a ton of force and then 180° stretch, holllly FF+#&*@&
Thank you for this episode, this is the only car i wanted to watch till finished
Im really happy to see you finally get an engine that was not grenaded! Im also happy to see that you are taking care of all the service issues up front for the new owner. Because we all know the person that wins the thing will never properly service it.
Amazing job, as usual Alex! This car is amazing as well and with the fixed engine it will be a blast!
if you need things to align before contact - like that front timing cover - then put in a few long studs and slide the cover over them, then toss in the rest of your bolts and swap the studs out before torquing everything down
They let you use their shop and tools and you pay Rusty back by punching him in the head tightening the crank bolt. Class act Alex!😂
Definitely one of my dream cars, nothing more satisfying than a job well done.
There's some serious torque going, in und aus this Engine🤣😂💪💪
For light torque values I use a 1/4" drive inch pound torque wrench (Snap-on of course). The torque specs can easily be converted. The bar type torque wrench is not a great option.
when I rebuilt my 5 cyl Volvo turbo engine (in 2001 from a V70 R) ,i managed to find someone who had bought factory tools for torquing engine bolts & other parts simultaneously ..,I know it did make a huge difference..,since I never had to 'touch' it ever again.....so for a 20 y/o 420 HP 'sleeper' daily car motor ,except regular maintenance like proper filters , oil & 98 octane and love !!..it's not bad..
I was in a hotel that had a fire alarm going off. The parking lot was full of people in various stages of dress freezing in the cold. A while later, we all went back to our rooms. The alarm went off again. A bunch of people in the lot, but more of them had taken the time to get dressed. This happened 4 times. I didn’t see anyone after the second alarm, I stayed in the bed and ignored the alarm.
I honestly love these videos. Thanks for doing what you do, it makes a long day of work worthwhile.
Brilliant work Alex and Rusty. Loving it!!
Excited to see the trip home.
Hey you guys that's a sweet whip am sure the lucky winner will truly appreciate it you guys work so hard am from Jamaica you all should talk a trip down to Jamaica I will show you guys my beautiful Island cant wait for the update on the car and the start up.
I can’t wait for the first start! Really nice assembly work, you guys are surgical.👍
Keep up Alex! I’m from România and I love your channel, every night when i’m upset or sad you make me forget about everything! Thank you🙏🏼
Can’t to see end of this one envious of u guys over the pond that’s got chance to win this 👍👍🇬🇧
"The torque wrench that Jesus used" had me cracking up. Nice job on the build!
I'm not usually a Mercedes guy, but I love that car and the C63 is one I would want! I'm loving this content!!🙌🏾
Cant stop, wont stop! Love the content. Especially the C63's. see you back in chicago. Enjoy the snow today... Hope to be a winner because i miss my 2011 C63... Come visit us at Oak Park Cars and Coffee this year. We are big fans.
Favorite engine, the C63 cars is why I subbed to this channel!
You really inspired me as a channel and now im forging a 1.4 Tjet Fiat engine that i bought used. My first ever time building an engine from scratch. Wish me luck 💪
I'm glad that you finally found you a better engine
I have the Ridgid 18V caulk gun, and it has an adjustment to make it run perfectly. There was a learning curve, but after that it got super easy.
Never wanted to join a giveaway as much as this one. 63 amg has been one of my dream cars ever since I got my manual c300 but with a kid on the way that got put off for awhile. Love your videos❤
very good vid alex. great to see you guys work together, good bunch of guys. just did a head on my m156 w211
My first rebuild is was m20 on e30, I spend about 2 month with same work… You are very fast with this very complicated motor. Sick
Alex, your German is like my Italian, very good 😊😉
Love watching these videos cause their so informational at times and nice to watch
Man you’re such a legend. Love seeing car channels where you know how to do everything with a car.
Awesome video Alex. Well done for getting to this stage on very little sleep!
Now that was one sloppy way of using gasket sealant...
When we put those covers back with their usually thin mating surfaces. We use a handheld siringe. Fill it up with sealent, apply pressure and control flow with your thumb. Hold your index finger next to the siringes tip as a guide. If all done carefully you'll lay a very thin line that sits perfectly in the middle of the mating surfaces every time.
It will also prevent any leftover sealent that got squaqhes near the inside get flushed away with the engine oil over time, blocking the pickup mesh like the chain guide did in the video.
Anyways, just my piece of advice from experience.
Well done on putting her back together in such a short time !
Amsoil and FCP, great minds think alike!!!! I can’t wait to this Benz running around driving!!!!
Phenomenal vid bro! Subscribed 👊
