Love this bag! Such a cute idea. I didn’t hear you mention it in the video, but I hope you asked the artist if you could use her artwork before you made this! The raccoon drawings are great.
Hi Christine, my girlfriend actually made this bag cause she works in a factory which works for high fashion brands like Dior, Gucci, Fendi and such here in Italy. She said the bag you made is quite convincing and that just one side took her almost 8 hours to embroider with the industrial embroidery machine. Big hugs form Italy and have a nice day!
Scotchgard does a product called fabric crafts water shield, which is recommended for bags and embroidery. I have no experience of it, but maybe some other viewers might have tried it? Your bag is fabulous! Congratulations!
I used to volunteer for a wildlife sanctuary, watching the raccoons immediatly trash the fresh water i just put in by washing their food in it filled me with joy haha. Raccoons are the best.
I keep joking that my one year old is a raccoon because she trashes her cup of water at dinner by washing her hands in it, then dropping her food in and fishing it out to eat 🤣🤢
Dior use a lot of contact cement. They first apply the glue onto the seams, then hammer or use the pliers to activate the contact cement and then sew the seams. You use this technique normally with leather. And this is why they had only one seam where Christine needed two. You can clearly see the heritage of that bag, it’s constructed by someone who usually makes leather bags. A seamstress would do some things different, use perhaps an encased seam, where Dior decided to use the construction with the satin stitch to deal with the cutting-edges. Nonetheless it frames the motive nicely. And her version is great. Love it🥰
The Dior bag is starched throughout with a synthetic starch right after embroidery before stitching to give the stitched seams also a cleaner look. first the print is embroidered then a broad twill tape is stitched down the middle and over the twill tape the logo is embroidered, so it will look a little more neat. for the handles there is also a tube filling used. You did a very good attempt ! I suggest starching your bag a couple times :)
this bag is gorgeous! for me it's even better than the original one - it's meaningful. you're a genius, christine-i wouldn't have figured out the way to deal with all of those inside out seams in my whole life! by the way, imagine this bag with something cottagecore-ish..or fairies..or horses..i would even by an embroidering machine for that
Beeswax !! I watched the “savoir faire” series on the Dior channel and it looks like the heat seal wax on the bags and then chip off. Loved this video !! Thanks !
THIS bag is worth 3 grand. I would never buy a Dior bag, WHY pay for status? Your bag is unique & adorable and hand made with love. Thanks for sharing it. As a newbie sewer I do not NEED a embroidery machine, but between this and the Kefta panel embroidery, I am starting to really want one, lol ! Of course now you need to make one with your adorable dogs on it, too !
@@bonbonS1969 Exactly if you’ve seen the craftsmanship that goes into making a Dior bag you might realize why they cost so much. Think about what an embroidery machine costs… well over $3k I’m sure.
okay, but calling something "out of my price range" instead of "expensive" is the kind of positive mindset we need to fashion. I'm gonna try dropping this in my vocab :D
The passion that you put into every project you do, finding the right fabric of your choice, the best quality thread for your beautiful embroidery, the research and all those minute details you notice, is every single time 100% the most epic *drawn out Rachel Maksy chefs kiss* ever! I have fallen head over heel inlove with the Raccoon embroidery!
That is the most fun raccoon bag I’ve ever seen. I worked as a wildlife rehabilitator and had many raccoons come into my care and have such a fondness for them. (I quite agree raccoons would make terrible pets…they are far too smart and curious and destructive to be in a house. Besides, wild animals should stay wild!) Kudos for taking an overpriced, mass-produced fashion accessory and making it not only yours, but unique.

from my experience with crochet bags i would recommend a layer of lining for the insides of the bag, a layer of plastic canvas on the bottom. i did this for my first crochet bag and it was a game changer for my second bag, i bought a cheep plether bag and put a crocheted lid/cover over it. to make it stiffer (prevent fraying) and waterproof i brushed a layer of modpoge. it stiffened the thread, makes the flappy lid hold shape and i have gotten so many complements that it looks professional. give it a try on some of your scraps. i did 2(?) layers, but i wanted a very stiff finish
So cool! This reminds me of the two pet raccoons we had when I was a kid in the late 60s. They were orphaned and we raised them for a year or so until they were ready to go out on their own. They were SO. CUTE.
I think this bag is one of my favorite projects you've made. I love all your work, the detail you are able to achieve is amazing! But this bag takes your beautifully detailed work and makes it accessible to the everyday person in a way everyone can appreciate :)
I live in Dubai, so see these bags everywhere, and have been dreaming of making one myself! I'm so glad youve made this video, as it has inspired me to actually create one for myself once i move back home to Australia :D
I don't understand the society we live in: In what reality is that original tote more desirable than the one COVERED IN RACCOONS? Truly, the fashion industry has no idea what modern women want. We want trash pandas.
This is so much fun! I love the creativity in taking something that would be nothing but a 'status symbol' and making it your own. So much more unique, personal, and awesome!
That is the cutest darn knockoff I've ever seen! Love the trash pandas. Great workmanship with your limited access to their manufacturing process. It's wonderful to see you bringing the artist's sketches to life. How did you like working with the canvas at that weight? And was the original unlined? For $3500 you'd think Dior would have lined it!
Interesting that I just watched a video today from Christian Dior on the making of the Jardin d'Hiver tote and I fell in love with it immediately! They put some kind of coating on top but I couldn't figure out what from the comments! YOUR VERSION IS JUST SPECTACULAR!!!! I love the raccoons, this is so creative, you're amazing!
This is absolutely incredible and I love the amount of detail and care you put into making it! It shows how much there is to constructing even a seemingly simple bag.
I love that you really paid attention to the original bag and its details. I've seen some other videos on youtube about sewing diorlike bags and your is the best!
I'm a new viewer and had no idea you were a physician before this video! As a physician myself it's nice to see someone in the business have a life outside of work. I loved this bag.
For the price of that tote I could actually buy a embroidery machine, second hand. Superb video. Terrific bag, wonderful embroidery, brilliant and beautiful artwork from the artist. I am really looking forward to more collaborations between you both. What a match made in heaven, with threads attached.
This turn out amazing! Omg I love the trash pandas so much! Their eyes are so cute! I'm at a lost for words. This really came together amazing and I think it's better then the designers collection that is out! If your looking to weatherproof your bag. NicWax is a good at home way to do it. It's also made eco friendly and made using plants. (it smells like Elmer glue at first 🤣. We use NicWax to weatherproof horse blankets at my old job. It doesn't add stiffness sadly. But it also works pretty well on canvas and jackets too) I feel like I have seen a stiffener at the craft store for quilts that you spray and iron...🤔 I would also say melting bee wax on it would most def stiffen it, it would also be a lot messier and change the color slightly. Either way your bag turn out amazing 🤩
I've never watched your channel, but I did see your community post about the people claiming you weren't properly compensating the original artist. Thank you for addressing it! I decided to watch the video, after it showed up on my recommended too. I love the bag!
Girl, your bag deserves an original name, without Dior on it. It is very beautiful and to my opinion very original (even though inspired by the Dior bag). You spent so many hours on it, this bag deserved to have an original name.
As usual, your work is beautiful. I made an abstract giraffe dress and will now be on the look out for elephant fabric (my spirit animal) for a statement dress and clutch. Thank you
My mom and I love watching your videos and we loved your racoon bag! We love trash pandas. (And I mean that term in the most affectionate way possible.) My mom suggested trying fabric mod podge to seal the embroidery. Hope it helps!
Luxury bags usually don't come with pockets, so people sell shapers or organizers to make them more functional. Sounds perfect to give your bag that stiffness!
Such a wonderful bag. Your creativeness always blows me away. I would definitely line it with a waterproof canvas to protect to embroidery threads on the inside as well as the overall inside of the bag. It will also give your bag some structure without too much bulk.
That bag is amazing, and I absolutely love how the raccoons came out. The very fine thread and your digitizing gave it such a beautiful sketchy look like you wanted.
This video was such a treat, thank you! And yes, I caught your acknowledgement of the artist of the racoon drawings, and wish people would stop the negativity towards you. You brighten our days.
You are simply a ray of sunshine with each video! Your kind nature just shines through. And I adore this bag! I have some pillows with a beautiful Jacobean print and I would LOVE to have it actually embroidered. Your videos have convinced me I need an embroidery machine.
What I absolutely love the most about your videos is your enthusiasm! It really shows that you love what you are doing and enjoy sharing it with us. And now we have embroidered trash pandas! How much better can it get?!

There is a waterproofing liquid that's used by bag makers called Odicoat, made by Odif - perhaps you could look into that?

There is fabric stiffener. I use it to keep jerseys from rolling. It can get as stiff as a board.
Could the coating be wax? Like how they wax canvas to make it waterproof and stiff? I have to wax my Barbour coat and it has a weird stiff texture.
Yes, it’s likely either linseed oil or some kind of wax. I have no idea if the fabric was treated before or after it was embroidered.
I would wax that outside to make it water resistant and also line the inside to give it more structure. Awesome bag! 🌟🙌🏼✨
