  • The Miata has been around since 1989 and Mazda continues with the same philosophy they started with on this 2023 MX-5 RF. On the outside you will discover a sleek shape, folding hardtop and 18in wheels. On the inside you will be greeted by a leather interior, massive tachometer and perfectly place gear lever. Under the hood is a 2.0L inline-4 that produces 187HP & is mated to a 6-speed manual gearbox. Is the 2023 Mazda MX-5 RF Miata a BETTER sports car than a Toyota GR86 or Subaru BRZ?

First, I completely agree with how great the Mazda Soul Red is. This has to be the closest thing to true candy-apple red that a major automaker has come up with to date. Second, these MX-5 Miata's are a hoot to drive. As you said, it's not about the horsepower, but the driving dynamic especially with this great little roadster.

Hands down, one of the best reviews of the Mazda Miata RF that I have seen. Your enthusiasm for the driving experience really shines through. With 55+ years of owning Firebirds, Mustangs and Corvettes, I think it is time for a Miata RF six speed manual. I miss the days of the gear changes. I’ve wanted a Miata since they first came out, and I test drove first generation model (Na). I had a 99 (Nb) model with a very unsatisfying automatic (my late wife couldn’t drive a manual). I have now been driving an Nd 2018 Miata GT with a 6-speed manual for 3 years, and I love it! It’s black with a cherry red top (limited edition color), and it’s a blast to drive.

Daily drove an ND1 40k, then traded it in for an ND2 that now has 30k. Pure driving joy for every mile. RF is perfect for me with cold winters to have a coupe. I wouldn't have bought an MX-5 without it. Never knew when I bought it that the top would be open every summer at every opportunity. I highway cruise top open. Windows about 2 inches down is the quietest, which is still loud.

Posted this in a reply, but posting it again here:
I owned a GR86 and now own a ND2 Miata RF. GR86 drives more like a serious car, but Miata is more playful. I'd argue that the Miata is more fun as a street car even with the roof up which is why I sold my GR86 and bought my Miata. Track car, GR86 would be better at least from the factory. Miata does have a better manual (much better clutch pedal and more mechanical feeling gear box), has a more responsive throttle response, and no rev hang. I have my roof on 95% of the time in my Miata, but convertible is really nice for those days you want to feel free. Of course, GR86 is way more practical and probably a little bit safer. GR86/BRZ as you mentioned costs less. Miata has much better gas mileage, but the GR86 does feel a little bit faster. GR86 infotainment is faster and more responsive with a significantly better back up camera, but had a lot more disconnection issues on the GR86 which I rarely have in the Miata. Miata's Bose sound system is much better than the GR86 Premium sound system.

Another great review and great camera work Steven. I have always loved the Miata and I think this MX-5 RF is where is it at. It is a really nice-looking car and looks stunning in this color and I too agree it is a pure sports car. In a way you don't really realize until you have been around a while, many of today's cars are just too good at what they do. Just getting onto the freeway recently from the on-ramp I was already going triple digits without even knowing it. The truth is an average person spends more time on public roads than the track and with the MIata you can feel the sensation of speed even when you are not speeding. The fact that Mazda was able to create a folding hardtop in such a small package is amazing and I also have to give Mazda a lot of respect for keeping the Miata very close to the size and weight of the original first-gen Miata. I really miss my old MG. It was not the fastest car but because it was basically a road-legal go-cart driving the thing was so much fun. I am going to have to find a way to get a current-gen Miata before the formula is tainted with electrification. Again Joe very well done and thank you for describing the differences between the trims. Looks like the Club will be the one I get as well.

So, maybe the new manual is better… but I doubt it. Frankly, the ND Miata is great and it’s hard to improve it. Mazda is merely tweaking it and changes are minimal. Basically, steering felt heavier and maybe the suspension firmer. It was a bit more track focused? No big advantage over older ND versions, after 2019. The Miata is so good, why mess with success?

Going to add to my previous comment. Last week I had a seat in a new RF in Club trim, with the BBS/Brembo package and Recaro seats. The seats look great but people should know they’re a bit narrower than the factory seats. Also, the RF top definitely robs you of some headroom inside the car. It was noticeable to me how much less headroom there was compared to the soft top ND1 I had.

I've had a mx5 NC 2007 for nearly 2 years, hardtop 2.0 sport, I would not swap this car for anything other than a Jaguar f-type or maybe a good-looking Jaguar xkr, having drove my motor home the last week around the country, getting back in the mx5 it now feels like an absolute rocket :) if you have ever wanted an mx5 i would say just get it you won't be disappointed, i got rid of my Jaguar xe 240 R sport for the mx5 and I haven't really missed the Jag as much as i thought i would, and i loved that Jag as it looked and drove amazing. One of the best things about the mx5 is they are cheap to run, cheap to fix, cheapish to supercharge if you want extra speed, you dont have to worry that much about anything going wrong with it as they are pretty reliable also but they drive amazing if you enjoy driving they are very fun :)

  • @carlodipaolo5826

The ride between Touring and club should be the same since they both use the same suspension components. 2021-2023 Touring has the same Bilstein shocks as Club and the same reinforcement brace under the hood and the same limited slip differential as Club. The Club package adds the BBS wheels Brembo brakes along with the Recaro seats. So actually they pitch and roll the same.
One thing no one mentions about the RF is that if you pay attention the car becomes stiffer with the top up or closed, however you want to describe not opened. All convertibles have cowl flex because not having a solid top removes a lot of structural support. Although the MX5 is engineered to be a convertible and its cowl flex is very well controlled, as any convertible there is still flexing. With RF in the up position the car becomes more like a solid roof car; its flex is noticeably reduced.

I miss my 2022 Mx 5 from watching this video. If you underestimate this car, you would find yourself in a whole lot of trouble before you even know it.
I thought cos it’s a low horsepower car, I could beat on it as I like… I was wrong, very wrong. That backend steps out at a moment’s notice, and if you are not ready for it, you would definitely spin out. I had gotten used to catching it before it spins out but, on one fateful night, as I was avoiding an obstacle in the middle of the road across a curve, it spun out and the rest is history. The car did what it was designed to do, airbags and all, and I came out of the wreck without a scratch. But that night, I walked away from that incidence with respect for the mix 5 and all sport cars in general.
It sucks cos I am not new to driving RWD cars, (g37, 944, e46) but, all it took was the wrong timing, obstacle in the road and BAM!
Hopefully I can get another MX 5 in the future and get better at driving it.

A sports car is a rwd, manual, lightweight car with quick shifts that fall ready to hand and we'll spaced pedals. So many performance cars miss these steps. We're lucky it's japanese as the reliability and costs only add to the no contest formula.
I like do like the Porsche Spyder, but some say that's a very different proposition to the mx5. But it isn't. Both are sports cars but the Spyder has such long gearing that'd you'd have to go pdk for urban driving. And as you established, a sports car needs a manual. And we should relish while we can, the whole world is going electric, so is posche, and one day the mx5 too.

I wish it was just a bit bigger, I daily drove a 2018 Mx5 and I HATED getting in and out of the car. The side of my knees also grew calyces from rubbing the middle console. I loved driving it tho. Ended up switching to a GR86.

Im a proud owner of a ‘22 MX-5 Club ST with the BBR package. Nothing beats the feel of this car. I bought a ‘19 BRZ a couple of years ago. Owned it for 6 months before selling it. I had wrestled with the MX-5 v BRZ debate for quite some time and chose wrong. A couple of years later I bought my ‘22 MX-5. No regrets. Today I spent hours cruising the country side. Curvy mountain and lakeside roads, a couple covered bridges, the open air filled with the smells of BBQ’s, the sun on my now sunburned arms…it was glorious. And the MX-5’s rev happy, preppy engine feels faster than it is. It’s the most fun you can have under 60.

"Less is more" is still true. If you are sane, you WANT good mileage, low insurance rates--and a car that will "corner" better than any gas hog--get you killed V8 or 10 monster which isn't good for much--other than getting killed, or killing someon else. And when you factor in, comfortable, looks great, pride of ownership--yeah, "less is more". These are two, not good, but GREAT cars, get one. PS one more thing I did not mention--RELIABILITY. More than any one thing, if you don't know what you want and need, let me tell you. You WANT and NEED the damn thing to start and run and take you where you want to go.

When I was about 25 I bought a 79 mĝ midget it was the last year they where made
My brother had one I think was a 73 witch looked a little better it was that cool British sports car color it was like a greenish yellow kind of like a highlighter but a little more green. I usually don't like crome but the older ones had it. The interior had those analog guages the real sports car one his eheel was wood I think and mine was a plastic his wheels where those cool wire ones mine where just styled steel that where painted silver. They where pretty similar though they where like a car you bought for fun only it was not dependable at all I know mine was only like three year old and the mileage was like 15000 and they both came with those cool sport car extras. The had the vinal room you would pull down the visors and there was a latch behind each one once you released them you could pull the top back with one hand. It had a bunch of the male ends of snapsabout eight inches apart all around the cockpit and if you dropped the roof you could pull up a vinyl cover that went over the folded roof that had the female side of the snaps to give the open roof a cleaner look. It also came with tono cover that would snap all around it was made with the seat in mind it had the shapes of them sowed in it was ment for roof down driving on cold late autumn day you got in and out by way of a zipper that was the way out but when you where driving the heat could be on and trapped under the cover. And there where companies that made a hard top roof but with about 2 inches of ground clearance so my brother used his all year it was his only car. I had my work truck so it was a summer toy. The dash was pretty sparse I remember there where 3 light round about a half inch a piece the bottom was green middle yellow I was told it was the stall light mine use to flicker when I was idling and the top was red it was and oil pressure light but they could come on for know reason. They where fun on a dark country road on a summer night being so close to the ground the speed limit felt like you where doing twice that. I actually got it to replace my stolen motorcycle they where toys the paint always bubbled because of the damp climate in Britain when they painted them it wasn't in a controlled space they started rusting on the way over on a container ship and there where engine problems because the tuning was for a cool damp climate. Getting parts was a crap shot and every time you wouldvtake it for a run it needed some part I found a few places that these people bought up before they closed Morris garage you would find them in this magazine called the want advertiser it was the early eighties internet but you could find what you needed at 5 times the cost of a part for a regular car. It was and experience it taught me basic mechanics I dug a six foot hole to change the oil and filter I paid 1500 I put the hard shell roof on and a car cover but I had enough after 3 years and got what I paid but I actually put very little mileage on it but I probably replaced all the outer motor parts did the body c work replaced the top. I remember friends use to borrow it on short vacations my brother and I said it at the same time when we saw the mistake a Japanese m.g if we had the extra money we probably would have gotten one but a few years later after his first marriage failed she got everything even though she was the 45 year old with the 20 year old boy friend he had been finishing college at night and on the week ends one last try to salvage there relationship produced a second kid so I was there Saturday and Sunday to watch the baby and when he got his ba he thought of going for his masters in buissness and when he got that they divorced I got him and apartment in one of the buildings I managed and his boss made him the service manager he was and a/c tech it came with a significant increase in pay I had been squirrel away money from side work. I had the down payment and we split the mortgage but put what cash I had left into the house that was a100 years old and never upgraded.

I owned a GT86. I sold it because I needed a more economical car and family car... I wish I didn't sell it. Now I'm trying to find something as a weekend fun car... I've looked at everything from 350z, 370z, s2000, stinger (can also be used as a family car), rx7, rx8, Lexus RC, Hyundai i30n fastback, Celica, MR2, all have their advantages and disadvantages, mostly being too expensive, only the 350z, Celica, mr2 and mx5 (older model but I don't like the look) you can get second hand cheaply. Under £10k. I might try to test drive a mx5 nd, just to see. I've test driven the i30n fastback, but not long enough.

I used to be executive elite at national rental and I would have the pick of the litter of rentals at LAX. I'd always come back to this car. It handles like nothing else and is amazing driving from the mountains to Malibu. Just be aware - you cannot fit anything bigger than a carry-on in the trunk.
Edit: just wanted to add a funny story - years ago I wanted to rent a Pontiac Solstice / Saturn Sky at Hertz LAX. When I got to the car, I asked the attendant how to open the trunk. He said the only storage space is the very small compartment when the canvas roof is up. I said "so what happens if you are with your wife and you have luggage - where do you put it?" He replied, dead seriously:
"Well then you're going to have to make a choice."
