81 Years old...finally got my second Miata, the first being a new 2004 M'Speed. Sold it a few years later with only 15 K miles...fun car but a bit tight. Bough a C 5 Corvette...Sold it 11 years ago, bought several turbo hot hatches, the last being a 2019 Civic Si coupe. Fun car, have had it 5 years, but Miata kept calling my name. Just drove back to DFW Texas area from Oklahoma City where I purchased a new ND3 Club. Most fun you can have behind the wheel, or in any car with clothes on. I still do SCCA and other club autocross events, and the Miatas have always been really popular in various classes. I did well with the Civic Si, hope to continue with the new MX 5 Club...
I am trying to understand if anyone has experience with long-distance driving in the Mazda Miata. How does it perform on long drives? Is it comfortable? Can you recline the seat, stretch while sitting in the car, and grab a drink or a burger without having to get out? Also how does the soft top suit colder climates, where temperatures touch close to zero or sub zero?
@xm3di put it from my experience I drove over 15hrs in a NA Miata after getting out it feels like you just came out of the track it's that great lol always have that fun factor no matter where you go with it 🙃
@@xm3di I sold my NA that I had for 4 years last year in March. So I'm itchy to get another one even tho I wasn't surprised because I've been wanting an ND for a while now even before i gotten my NA, and now with this newly updated ND3 it will be my only miata forever. It'll be a secondary vehicle for me when I'm out enjoying the roads. I highly recommend that a Mx-5 Miata should always be a better source as a secondary vehicle. Your 1st car should just be about getting you from point A to B and ofc practical with more room than a Miata for your daily uses.
@@xm3di also, height will play a factor so I'm 5"4 so I'm able to fit in comfortably and enjoy the ride as long as I want to. If you're someone over 6ft personally, I would go for a ND2/3 to get that adjustment steering wheel to fix it to my comfort level.
2022 Mazda MX-5 RF Grand Touring owner here. If you can fit in the car and live with the storage and comfort compromises, this car is perfect. It's 80 degrees outside. Blue sky and puffy clouds. Perfect weather. Just went for a drive, top down, winding roads, all of the stress from work and life melts away with every short shift, redline run, and tight corner. For 35 years, Mazda has made the perfect sports car. And I daily drive mine, snow tires in the winter, and no issues at all. If you enjoy driving, if you consider yourself a car nut, you need one, new or used, doesn't matter. And you'll have a smile on your face with each top down drive. And I already asked my Mazda service manager...bad news...the 2024 infotainment system can't be retrofit into the ND1 and ND2 models. Oh well...
@PerryPapanier I know...I know! The system in our Mazda had to be designed and first built around 2015, and that makes it ancient. H And waiting 45+ seconds to boot up, detect my Samsung, activate AA, and start with music and maps on a daily driver...first world problems! It isn't the screen size that bothers me. It's the bad lag and slowness.
@aaronswink8554 yeah I get what u are saying. Will be interesting to see what the next Gen will look like n what is powering it. In the meantime happy driving
Mazda 2 ‘16 daily driver here (with the same infotainment as a MX-5 Miata ‘16 - ‘23). Just use Apple CarPlay or Android Auto? And if I’m not mistaken your dealer will update the infotainment when you come in for a service. Mine starts up in like 20 sec. and after that you just start using Apple CarPlay which works flawlessly (same as in my Focus ST ‘17)?

The best, refreshed version of quite possibly the best generation of the best roadster ever made. I have one on order, club with BBS. Can't wait till it comes. How many modern cars are light with great steering feel?
I love that Mazda continuously improves the Miata with updates every few years. With the extra long life cycle that this car has, these updates keep the car relevant and desirable, even 9 years on. I owned a early ND2 for a couple years and I still regret selling that little gem. I will definitely be picking up a ND3 before it goes away. I'm not necessarily against a hybrid Miata, but I think this ND3 is the pinnacle of what the Miata can be, if sports car purity is what you're into. It's light and nimble, naturally aspirated, RWD, manual transmission, easy canvas top, inexpensive... it doesn't get any better.
Joe, great review and the driving sequences were awesome. I fell in love with this car during my short time as a Mazda salesman in 2004-2005. I sold a brand new 04 2nd generation MX5 to a dentist and personally delivered it to his house. I had more fun driving that car than I had ever had up to and since that time. It is my dream to own one before I die as this is the king of sports cars without a doubt. You must have driven one to understand! Thank you for bringing this exceptional car to all your viewers today. ❤
Mazda has never said they're going to fully electrify the MX5 for the next model line. Like to see them drop the depressing "colours" like gray, sliver, whatever that awful colour with the reviewed car and give us British racing green, orange, yellow, even turqoise. It's a sports car, give us sports car colours!!!
Bland colors aside, their whole color system doesn’t make sense. Why can you only get the tan leather in the White or Gray painted Grand Touring? It would look the best paired with Soul Red or Dark Gray. Why can’t you get Dark Gray in the Club trim anymore? Dark Gray with the BBS Wheels looked great.
Bought a 24 Club in aero gray about a month ago and I love it. It’s just such a fun car to drive! I also have a red 1990 with the hardtop and it’s amazing how similar they feel, yet the 24 is just more refined. Great cars!
Thanks for another great video Joe. Thank you Lori for all the hard work behind the camera. I have been thinking about getting a '24 GT MX5 for the past month. Just concerned about the cabin water intrusion issue with the MX5 if left outside under oak trees where pollen and leaves can clog the drains. Unfortunately, I don't have a garage to park the Miata. Anyway, it would be great to do a local meet and greet sometime. I was born in Tampa and raised in Safety Harbor since 1981. All the roads you drive are my local roads. Love what what you guys do. But, since I always drive with the top down anyway unless it rains, may as well get a soft top!😄 There are cars that are fun to drive, and then there is the MX-5 that you drive for fun!
Thank you Joe and Lori for such a great review. I have not really considered the Miata for quite a few years because I always needed a back seat and a bit more room inside, but now my kids are grown up. So maybe its time🤔👍👍 Such a great road test too, gotta be one of the most under appreciated sports cars ever made👌
For an 8 year old design, this Mazda is still gorgeous and has aged very well. You can find very low mileage Club or GT ND2s for mid to upper 20's which feels like a great deal. Approaching $38K-40K new seems outright silly though...
6:33 Great review as always Joe…love the zit comment! I have a 22 GT…the 205 wheels are technically enough for this car but aesthetically speaking they are too skinny. I put on 225 45 17 tires and wow did that make a difference…both in looks and performance. Love, love, love this car!
I tried driving the 2024 soft top in Soul Red and couldn't believe how much fun I was having especially being 6ft 2inchs. So now I'm buying one for Christmas 🎄.
I think I'd rather see a saddle brown leather interior but the cream is nice. just not sure about the white stitching. I also love the wooden steering wheel and shifter from the NA Miata. Love to see them do some nice Nardo accents like that again also. but there's tons to love here with this car....👌
Hands down one of the most fun, easy to own, reliable, focused, sports cars on the market. And its easy on the bank account. You really need to understand that there is almost nothing else that checks all these boxes other than a Subie BRZ. Anyone who has actually put real seat time in one understands. I was lucky to have a chance to run an ND2 Club around the Nurbergring on a Tourist day and it was bliss. The shifter is brilliant. Heel toe placement of the pedals is near perfect. And you can break the rear loose if and when you want. Thank you Mazda!
@@worst-hd-player don't forget it is more than just about the purchase price. When it comes to running costs the MX5 is easily one of the most easy sports cars on the bank account. It's so light it doesn't chew through tyres and brakes very quickly, even on track days etc. When you need to replace tyres they are cheap. Being only a 2L 4cyl it doesn't drink a lot of fuel (relatively), even when thrashing the daylights out it. Being a mainstream brand it doesn't cost a lot to service. Being a simple car with no turbos etc you won't be spending a lot on repairs down the track because it is so reliable and easy to work on. Still being an only $40,000 car, it doesn't cost a lot (relatively) to insure. So yes, taking ownership factors/running costs in to consideration it definitely is easy on the bank account for such a dedicated sports car. There aren't many dedicated sports cars out there that are as cheap to run.
In 1990 the Miata weighed 2182 lbs., it is now around 2400 lbs. so not bad to only grow 200 lbs in this many years. Wish Mazda would add some better colors. They have a blue and a red, but...
Yes, if they're soft. There's a carved-out "well" in the trunk that is somewhat deep. To compare, you can easily fit 2-24 packs of bottled water or 5-12 packs of soda side by side with room on top. I purchased a new REI large soft-sided duffel bag just for use in that car because it fit, and backpacks and another carryon will fit. The plastic tray that holds the tire inflation kit and owner's manual does get in the way. Don't try a hard-sided suitcase - the opening is too small. And I've seen luggage sold online made just to fit in MX-5 trunks.
@@CarlosMartinez-rx9vk We own a 2023 and have easily fit two hard sided carry-ons on top of one another. There is even extra room for a few soft sided bags as well. We do this all the time.
I bought the 2018 RF and ❤️ it, so perfect. I prefer the touch screen and running lights on the older design, to bad they messed with this. Enjoy your reviews
Finally put a reservation down! Ordered the aero gray, such a beautiful color the first time I saw it in Japan Feb 2024! When I was looking at it through the windows, I knew that I would own one someday
I'm trying to decide between the Grand Touring and the Club. Love your videos, best I've ever seen, now a lifelong subscriber. You do such a great job but so hard to decide on a trim LOL!!
Miata is a track weapon, who ever thinks it's slow needs to go drive one. It's very deceiving with some suspension mods what it can do. Thank you Raiti.
Joe, I love your channel. It is my favorite auto channel. You always keep it positive and love what you do. Question for you or anyone else. I’ll be in the market soon for a car. I’m thinking of either a new Miata RF with a manual, or a used 2018 Boxster. The price difference is about 10 grand. Thoughts? I also might consider spending a little more and going up to a boxster s.
At 69, being a former tour motorcycle survivor, I view this vehicle as a four wheeled touring freedom machine. Not so much a track car either. Fun! Practical, weather protection, safety, (Less pavement RASH, better traction in cornering) my list could get really long in the tooth. I just don’t know crap about being a RUclipsr… 😅
I understand the low quality back-up camera. They wouldn't even have a back-up camera if it wasn't for the gov't requirement. Hence a cheap camera to keep the cost down as much as possible.
Love your videos Joe, but you need to recheck some of your stats on this one such as the size of the infotainment screen is wrong I believe its 8.5 “ and its functionality, MX-5 now has a touchscreen now !
I used to have a 2004 Mazdaspeed Miata turbo 1.8L 6-speed manual transmission, I remember smashing it with my buddy, the top down hitting the rev limiter in 6th ⚙️ we could barely hit 130 mph. Shortest ⚙️ set I've ever driven
I'd prefer the MX5 in red with tan interior. Something about gray that depresses me for some reason. I would also look for an aftermarket exhaust that doesn't sound like a fart can.
Light beige and dove gray clash and don't work for me, but I owned 1998 (last flip-up lights) and l loved it. This Gen is drop dead gorgeous. I love the deep metallic red. And I can see getting red & black leather seat covers to make it a bit flashier and fun. Base model with stick, or even a hybrid work for me.

I’m on my fourth Miata. While this car was not really meant for long distance driving, it can certainly be done and, if you’re smart about it, done rather well: • The MX-5 definitely prefers curvy 2-lane backroads over long stretches of flat, straight interstates! It’s on a twisty 2-lane that the car comes alive and is in its element. Sure, she will drone down the interstate all day without complaining, but clearly that’s not where the car really wants to be. • It really helps to simply plan on making frequent little stops, say every couple of hours, to just get out, walk around and stretch for a few minutes. That said, the seats are quite comfortable, and the driving position is good. • On the interstates, noise can be fatiguing. Many MX-5 owners use earplugs or even noise-cancelling headphones to reduce or eliminate “the drone”. And noise is not an issue below 50 mph or so. Some diehards like it, but most of us don’t recommend driving top down at interstate speeds. Too windy, too noisy and too tiring. • Soft-sided luggage is your friend. Even consider duffel bags over carry-ons. • There’s not much spare room in the cabin. The two detachable cup holders work well, and you could conceivably fit a 6-pack of Coke on the passenger side floor under your passenger’s legs, but no, most “stuff” will have to go in the trunk. • The soft top is superb (as is the RF version); either work great in even the coldest climates, and the powerful heater (and heated seats) can warm up the tiny cabin in record time. Put a set of winter tires on around Thanksgiving and the little car, with its perfectly balanced 50/50 weight distribution, is virtually unstoppable in winter, in up to about 6” of snow. Yes, you will find yourself easily driving past spun out SUVs and CUVs on the side of the road! If you keep these things in mind, the Miata can be a fun and competent long-distance companion.

Thanks! I really enjoyed the video, while I anxiously wait for delivery of my 2024 Soul Red MX-5 GT Soft Top. Traded in my 2018 RF GT for it. I like the RF a lot.
So maybe its time🤔👍👍
Such a great road test too, gotta be one of the most under appreciated sports cars ever made👌
❤ the two tone interior. Looks like so much fun!
Hey Joe, great review as usual. I love your no-BS format.
Cheers from an ND2 2022 owner from Luxembourg.
That really means the world! Thanks for watching from a distance!
For an 8 year old design, this Mazda is still gorgeous and has aged very well. You can find very low mileage Club or GT ND2s for mid to upper 20's which feels like a great deal. Approaching $38K-40K new seems outright silly though...
ND2 owner here. Luv your review and had to subscribe.
I need one of those and a twisty road.
Easy on the bank account? This same Miata in the video would be around $40k out the door 😂
Do you think you could fit 2 carry-on luggage bags in the trunk or no?
Unlikely.
My 2022 grand touring is amazing I love it. Such a great value. Actually allows me to have it as a second car.
For as long manual transmission.ill go for it,
Great, fun cars. I had a 1999. Never gave me any problems. I made the just to a Honda S2000 and never looked back.
That “place for three Twinkies” also happens to be a great place for my phone. My iPhone SE fits in there perfectly, like it was designed for the car!
I saw a kazillion videos of this guy but none as in this one watching laughing and enjoying the driving. Awesome!
I've always been waiting for your "annual" Miata update review 👍
Raiti hit the Jackpot Today
Don't know if I'd buy one for me but these cars are really fun to drive.
You better believe it Omar
If you make 1000,000 MX 5 videos I will watch all 2x’s fold ! It’s fun to watch you drive it ! 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
I dig the two-tone.
I kinda like the antenna
Makes it look classy!!
Just bought a 2024 yesterday going to sell it at auction this wednesday. Really fun to drive and great handling .
When I was looking at it through the windows, I knew that I would own one someday
nah, don't elimitate the classic antenna sticking out, it reminds us of a toy remote controlled car from our childhood
The interior does seem a step up from that of the BRZ/GR86, great little sports car!
Got my 2024 RF in red. Definitely great choice for myself. Even commute becomes kind of fun
Just bought a GT trim in machine gray just to commute to work everyday😂 I LOVE IT
I'm trying to decide between the Grand Touring and the Club. Love your videos, best I've ever seen, now a lifelong subscriber. You do such a great job but so hard to decide on a trim LOL!!
Thank you for being so supportive!
Like you, I want to add the club to the GT but I heard you lose the adapted lights….WHY??
The MX5 rewards all drivers, not just those that know what they’re doing. Slow car fast is for everyone. Great machine
What about the new steering rack for 2024?
You've driven so many ND Miatas over the years, I was hoping you'd comment on the new steering rack and rear diff, compared to the ND2.
What if you want to pan around the map? How does that work with it not being touchscreen (for the OEM map that is, not Apple Carplay/Andourd Auto)?
Yes of course Joe & I would love to buy this.
Always great, can't wait to see who brings one to the Rally in Landover MD!!!
Miata is a track weapon, who ever thinks it's slow needs to go drive one. It's very deceiving with some suspension mods what it can do. Thank you Raiti.
Joe and Lori and Steve keep up the good work real true and I love the video 👍
Great fun little sports car. Love that color combo ! 👍. Twinkie smelling candles in Walmart Joe 😂
I have to get some of those!
You have to go into the settings and turn the touch on. It’s a safety feature
Love the new drls they added, but you drove that thing hard! The miata still rips ;)
I loved the Mazda sports since the 90,s I love this
King of sports cars for the money.
Finally I've been waiting for your review on this new ND3. On throttle YEAH!
Like you have the pet peeve of fake front air vents, I don't like the info screens to stick up so high. Minor, but irritating for some reason.
Love the cheerful 2 toned interior! I can't say I love the spindly wheel design with that body style. But a great car!
Love my 23 sport mx5 that was born on 12/23 & saved a bunch, love it !!
Raiti's laugh says it all;I buy it!!🤜🏻🤛🏻💪🏻💪🏻😎
Nice nod to the ww2 era of cars and yes I very much remember cruising around with my freinds on bikes growing up great video makes me smile too 👏
Love my '22 RF and you can rev the crap out of it. You can't drive this without a big smile on your face. Thanks for the review.
Thanks for your great insight Anthony.
Awesome! It comes in Primer Coat pre-paint color. In 20 years we will look back at these as we look back at the 70's Brown station wagons... >.
Really does look like a lot of fun. I would like to see Fiat bring back the Spider.
Joe and Lori must be on fire nowadays two videos in less than 5 hours !!
I'm getting 40mpg on the highway. MADNESS!
I'm with you! One will be in labornurse's garage one day too! I'll get one the last year they make this ICE version.
Alright Joe let’s see what this Mazda will do for us
You’ll love the on throttle action!
Why didn't you include the top retracting?
I did!
@@RaitisRidesTimestamp please. I'd love to see it.
I'd prefer the MX5 in red with tan interior. Something about gray that depresses me for some reason. I would also look for an aftermarket exhaust that doesn't sound like a fart can.
15:22 I think you just reminded me of a certain song by "Chef", from South Park. 😂
It couldn’t of been a 1998 they didn’t make one that year

Zoom Zoom, I have always liked these!
I like that I can fit a lot of Twinkies boxes.
Always a wonderful car loved them from way back but I prefer bright yellow or green
will it be 35th anniversary edition ?
It's definitely a budget car for enthusiasts. I ended up picking up a type r instead 🙃
I’m on my fourth Miata. While this car was not really meant for long distance driving, it can certainly be done and, if you’re smart about it, done rather well:
• The MX-5 definitely prefers curvy 2-lane backroads over long stretches of flat, straight interstates!
