Gaijin recently made the M79 shell the new default stock round for American tanks with the 76mm (such as the M18 or M4A3), which has made some War Thunder players pretty upset. In this gameplay video, I teamed up with Odd to see just how bad the situation is.

Gaijin having made this godawful solid shot the default shell for shermans is honestly a crime. I am not necessarily against (but also not in favour) of having to grind for a good shell, but in those situations at the very least the default shell should be good too.
The british having to suffer through 4 shells before finally getting their APDS is ridiculous. Meanwhile the sermany that guffers starts out with their best shell almost without exception in that same BR range.
But you should be against grinding good shell. How the fuq tank should fight if it hasn't gun neither repair kits. Just HOW??
@@raketny_hvost I think starting out with a slightly downgraded shell is fine, a good example would be for example the british with their mk8 shell on the 17 pounder. It is still a very good shell, while also very useable. And then you have to work towards the APDS shell meaning you just need to grind ONE shell, not the 4 they have to grind now, I think that's a fair balance if gaijin does so badly want to have shells as modifications you need to research.
Another example would be how in MBT's you start out with HEATFS, in my opinion you should start out with the weaker dart (which most if not all MBT's have) and then possibly grind towards the better dart. You can still do well enough with the weaker dart.
The problem with stuff like the british mk6 and the MBT's starting with HEATFS is that it makes them downright combat ineffective. The shells aren't just a small downgrade from their normal shells, they are barely useable in the BR's they are used in.

@@Gary_The_Metro lower mbt brs I don't think it's a big deal to start out with heatfs, but when chemical armor is everywhere hearfs is almost useless and darts should be the stock round.

GOD I remember the time where Gaijin switched my shell loadouts and it replaced my APCBC with solid AP. I wasn't aware that they did it and the amount of times I should've gotten the kill but instead get killed was painfully stacked upon me

A little fact, The M62 (APHE) used to be stock ammo, and the M79 (AP) needs to be researched to unlock. They patched it a few months ago; now, the M79 is in stock, and the M62 needs to be researched.

Which only makes grinding the M4A2/3 (76) particularly painful. Getting constantly uptiered, and not being able to do jackshit to any of the tanks on that BR. And they say that Germany suffers...

The solid shot for the Sherman's used to be so SO god damn good
But Gaijin had to remove that with the entire solid shot rebalance under the guise of "Mechanical Changes"
Changes that curiously just so happened to nerf every single American tank while buffing every single German with no resulting BR adjustments.

Awesome to see more gameplay videos, especially with Oddbawz, would love to see you try out the CA Lorraine, a nice underestimated TD.
Honestly, a good balancing for the solid AP would be to make it similar to HESH in that it doesn't have to pen to cause spalling on the inside, if only a little to only injure a crew member. I've seen many simulations on youtube (great source, I know) where rounds doesn't pen at all, but still rips off fragments on the other side of the armor and shoots towards the crew, much like a HESH round would.
So, make solid AP cause less spalling than HESH, but still reward near penetrations with an otherwise mostly useless round using an interesting mechanic.
No, this is stupid. APs should just have more piercing and good damage. Explosive APs in game already have much more damage than they had IRL
@@raketny_hvost yeah. One of the reasons the British used solid shot is that in testing the aphe and solid shot were so similar in performance that they decided to stick with solid shot
@@steveshumate1983 not really. APHE had a lot of issues those times, including "not-like-war-thunder" damage and situations when fuse didn't work. Also all this stuff decreased piercing as explosive AP was a bit lighter. Finally everybody started to produce APFSDS, but idk is it more expensive and rare than same HEATs because i herd tankers use HEAT more often in Ukraine for ex.
The damage problem in Warthunder is as old as ground forces themselves, it's a combination of 2 things
1) Crewmembers can survive far too many fragments without being knocked out
2) Crews do not bail even if more than half of the crew is dead and the remaining crew is injured.
The resulting situation is that tanks in general are bullet sponges which take far more penetrating hits to take out disable than they should. APHE is the exception because it deals an absurd amount of post-pen damage but it actually makes it perform more realistically overall because it can reliably one-shot tanks unlike other shells.
@@KekusMagnus I won't agree that APHE behave realistically as bigger calibers have more issues making them difficult to use, than supremacies, while lower caliber do too bog amount of damage. This may represent real behaviour of crew (but not even always), but not real power of shells, also breaking game balance, when 75mm stick damages equally to 120+mm mauls

@@ffenixfubuki Shot mk 8 for the 17 pounder the main shell everyone uses is APCBC(Amor Piercing Capped Ballistic Capped). The 2 and 6 pounder also use APCBC. The 20 pounders APCBC will straight nuke tanks.

gaijin realized that everyone ignored this crappy round so they did the only logical thing and made it stock to try to make the grind more frustrating so people would by GE components. Genius!

This shell gives me flashbacks of the old british solid shot grind. the mandatory crew sniping is so painful.
The more WT game play videos I watch the more I enjoy collabs and group play over single creator videos. The shared joy and pain are just more fun to watch.
When it’s a review single creator is obviously better. But challenges and general gameplay are so much more fun to watch with back and forth.
When I finally unlocked the M10, I had to spend GE to unlock the APHE shell because it was that bad, I was so miserable and I kept dying so much that I just had to take the coward's way out and spend money, good grief

I was in a Sherman Firefly shooting the flat side of some American Sherman and i shot his ammo 4 times and they were still just red before he turned and 1 shotted me.

4:17 Come again? It ricocheted off the side of the mantlet and then started to ignore matter and physics and went through the whole turret. Its already bad enough when 150+pen rounds fail to go through a Tiger front plate just cuz they love tapped that angled plate but this a whole new level of volumetric working as intended...

This round used to have higher penetration as a trade-off against the APHE, but then Gaijin changed a bunch of shells around. Now it's completely pointless. Well, it's sometimes free where the APHE has a price, but you still won't use the uncapped AP because it sucks.

When I was new I thought regular solid shot ap was the best shell to use and naturally I was basically just fuming like every game because I couldn't get any kills for like 200 games until I figured it out. Smoke is litterly a more capable shell then ap on the 76 Sherman. I have killed planes with smoke. Wont kill a plane with ap

That moment at 0:55 reminded me of a match I had last week, an enemy player was very upset in chat about being unable to penetrate a Leopard 1 when they hit my turret cheek.
when I shot and destroyed their tank they followed up with "Oh, it was a Conqueror, my bad" and we had a lovely exchange in chat after that XD

The firefly Sherman and the Tipo have this problem to extreme degrees because non explosive ammos is the only ammo given to them. They have no place on the BR they’re at.

Solid shot pain can be experienced in a Churchill VII! With armor to prevent it from being lowered in BR, it lacks the speed to properly flank enemies and is armed with the cannon of 103mm max pen.
