Hey everyone! Here's 5 country licks inspired by my favourite country players such as Guthrie Trapp, Brent Mason and Johnny Hiland. If you wanna know more about the theory and thought process, feel free to shoot me an email!
My 67 year old hands are going to have to accept the fact that 75% speed is all that's available, but these licks are so melodic they hold up at any speed. Thanks for your work on this!
Haha thank you!
the major thing is to be able to play well within one's technical limitations
Whoa Bro! His left hand is barely moving! HAHAHA
I don’t think age should be a factor.
@@davidpanzer1166 Jeff Beck sure proved that. He was just getting warmed up.
Videos like this is some of the BEST country content on RUclips. EXACTLY what I’m looking for

well done bro!
Wow! Fantastic licks!
Thank you!
Amazing. Are you using the plectrum to pick and not your fingers?
I use hybrid picking, so a combination of both!
@@erikholmbom brilliant!
Good work!
Thank you!
great licks
Thank you!
Phoooooar, these licks are huge! Quick question, and apologies if this is a bad one, are you playing in any modes?
Thanks!
Thank you so much!! I would say this is 95% mixolydian😎

Thank you! It means alot!!
Oh man these are hot licks!
Thank you, Adam!
Thank you!!!
Well done 😎
impressive.. great stuff.. please do more like this :)
Thank you! I will do!😎
@@erikholmbom how long did it take you to nail that first lick to speed?.. I can do it at the speed when the tab comes up.. but it all falls apart at the opening speed of the video.. any tips? take it measure by measure?
@@neastguy Hm, hard to say.. It didn't take long when I recorded it but that's because I've practiced stuff like for a long time! But yeah, take it measure by measure and try to be as relaxed as possible so you don't unwanted tension in the body. So try to use the least amount of pressure you can when you fret a note and always try to play with your fingertips. Those things are really important to me! Hope it helps!
@@erikholmbom thanks.. I think I struggle with the snap of the double stops at the end of the lick to make it sound a teleish country.. thanks again... I'll keep plugging away..
@@neastguy I see, yeah, that's the hard part for me as well😅
Superb
Grymt Erik! Grymt lir och produktion!
Tack Robert! Inspirerad av dig😎
@@erikholmbom Tack detsamma!!
This is sick!!
🙏
Amazing
Thank you!!
Excelente...!!!
Nice!!
Pretty amazing!
Thank you, Arthur!
Amazing stuff. What's your setup for recording. That guitar tone is amazing
Thank you, it means alot! I’m using the Neural DSP Quad Cortex and a Fender Deluxe Reverb and just some compression!
Love this. Really ripping through these licks. What's the backing track rhythm? That's worth a lesson on it's own.
Thank you! You can find the backing track on my Patreon! And I will do a lesson on that kind of rhythm on there!
Excellent!
Thank you!!
I tried Lick #2, it seems there is an inaccurancy to the TAB. Towards the end of the lick I omitted the 3 and 0 before the final pulloff. I tried squeezing the 3 and 0 notes in there but it appears the notes extend the length a bit over, so landing on the A is impossible. If 3 and 0 are omitted you land exactly on the A just like in the video. What are your thoughts on this Erik? Great lessons
More more....me want more...
Awesome!!!
Thank you!
I love your tone. Are you using any pedals? If so what are they
Thank you! No, just using the Neural DSP Quad Cortex with a Fender Deluxe Reverb model!😎
I'm going to play lick 1 next time I go to guitar center!
Hahah do that!😎
I am Korean, but I want to start country music. Is there any good music for the newbie to start with?
Super!
Thank you!
Awesome! What strings gauge are you using?! Thanks!
Thank you! 10-46, I’ve used the Elixir Nanowebs for many years but recently tried the Daddario XS and really liked them!
Blir helt klart suggen på att börja spela gura! Guld alltså!
Haha kör! Du kan få en lektion😎 Tack så mycket, Mattias!
Hi Erik,
how important would you say is the Neural DSP for getting this kind of country tone when recording? Were you ever able to achieve something similar just using the stock plugins from your daw or the Neural DSP makes a huge difference?
Thanks!
Hi Leandro,
I would say it’s a amazing piece of gear but not essential for getting this kind of tone. I’ve gotten similar results with amps and other modelers!
Can I ask you what pedal upset you have
Hold my beer while I show off.
wow
wow can somebody point me to an album that sounds like this? I'm just getting into country
This is too awesome! 👍 What amp are you playing thru?
Thank you!! Quad cortex!😎
@@erikholmbom Very impressive rig.
I like it a lot thanks!! but... we don't get to see the right hand and listening to it you use hybrids here... wish i could see them
How do I play the backing track?
on these styles, the string gauge is important. What gauge is he using? I'm currently playing 11s, which are fine for Blues and a bit weak for straight ahead jazz. They seem definitely too heavy for these fast bendings... at least to my hands.
Yeah, that can help. I use 10s!
Killer
What size strings these be?
Everyone of these could have been an Alan Jackson song
killer
These licks are HOT indeed!
😎🤘
Great lesson, incredible fast and crystal clear. In lick 1 some notes sound muted. How do achieve that sound? Is it a right or left hand thing? Do you add these notes randomly or is there a method behind it?
Thank you, Chris! Yeah, I palm mute them. In a lick like this I like palm muting more of the lower strings. But that’s a personal preference!
It’s hard to go in depth about how and why, but if you want to have affordable country lessons with me on Skype/Zoomon topics like these or whatever you like contact me at: holmbom.erik@gmail.com!
Like ❤
Hawk Pick?
I use Timber Tones!
so para eu treinar 0:21
Can you tell us the secret to your tone? Please?
Here I’m using my Quad Cortex with a Deluxe Reverb model with compression and reverb! That’s the secret😛
Lo bueno es qye a esa guitarra le pusieron grasa
Licks sound better in slower mode to me. Fast is just that... fast. No soul to some country playing. It's all chicken with the head cut off stuff.
The meat and potatoes are in the slower versions, mostly.
As an aside, I purchased that same exact looking Tele from Musician's Friend years ago. Had to send it back. Every string, almost every fret buzzed. Totally bummed me out. They ain't no Sweetwater.
He should show up slowly
Hybrid picking?
You need to teach at a slower speed with tabs. I'm an advanced player and can play these , but it would be like learning them off the record.
Slower would help.
unnecessarily fast...
You can slow down the video if you press the wheel icon at the bottom right if it's too fast for you.
not easy at all...thx
!!!!!!!!
