      @@BrettsWoodshopI never use vocal tracks. Consider ambient background tracks to support the video story. It's also more effective to focus attention to leave holes in the music when the video subject is more detailed. Nice work on the project!

    So beautiful!! With respect to reinforcing the miters, the framing is glued to the edge of the board. The miters don't take any stress whatsoever and thus don't require reinforcement. It's not like a picture frame or a box where there is nothing in the middle. When doing joinery, think about the forces and be realistic about what you need to actually protect against.

    • @BrettsWoodshop
      @BrettsWoodshop  6 месяцев назад

      Thanks for the encouraging words! This board was part of that chess table, so the price was for the table which I sold for less than what I should have, being that it was my first time building a table. I’m not comfortable sharing the price publicly, but you could DM me on IG and I’ll tell you privately. I haven’t sold just a chessboard by itself yet, but it would probably be in the thousand dollar range. I’m hoping to get to that veneer press video soon. I have another customer waiting before I can get to that though. Thanks for watching!

    Looks beautiful! I have a question...what is the music you are playing? What language is it, and is there a story as to why you use it?

    • @BrettsWoodshop
      @BrettsWoodshop  5 месяцев назад

      No story really, I was going for “soothing” as I thought that would fit the chess theme. Each song is in a different language. One is Spanish that also includes some Hebrew (worship), another is Portuguese (also worship I believe). The other ones I’m not sure. If you scroll down to the bottom of the description the songs are listed.

    I see that you have the Cutech jointer. You said that you have trouble getting perfect results from jointing? If you would - can you please articulate more on what the problem was? I'm considering buying that same jointer, because they now offer it in the 12" size. What do you advise? Thank you, and splendid video.

    • @BrettsWoodshop
      @BrettsWoodshop  9 месяцев назад

      Thank you very much! I think my problems with the jointer are purely operator error (lack of experience and skill). That said, I think the fence on my benchtop model is not very robust and maybe a bit unreliable. But a 12” floor model sounds amazing! I’m jealous. 🤢

    Just a suggestion for future projects, I would use a spline for the miters. Cutting a slot and putting in splines are very strong and effective. Great video. Keep up the good work.

    • @BrettsWoodshop
      @BrettsWoodshop  9 месяцев назад

      I’d have to glue in the edge banding afterward to hide the splines, but doable. Something to consider.

    • @Bernardgrubb
      @Bernardgrubb 9 месяцев назад

      I was thinking of using it as a feature of the board leaving the splines exposed. Perhaps with a contrasting wood.

    • @HarisWoodshop
      @HarisWoodshop 9 месяцев назад +1

      Splines give good strenght yes, but I don’t think it is a functional need for a chessboard as there will be not much stress or weight applied on it. But for a nice view with a contrasting colour, yes.

      I guess we’ll see…
      I used very similar methods for the first chessboard I made 3 years ago. And the only movement I’ve noticed is that I can feel (but not see) the seams between the squares. I’m wondering if that’s related to the type of glue that I used, which was Titebond 2.
      The mitered frame is holding up beautifully.

    • @tomchapman4826
      @tomchapman4826 9 месяцев назад +1

      Ì decided to go with hide glue as it's supposed to not have glue creep. I've seen others at the same thickness so I'm goin with it.

    • @BrettsWoodshop
      @BrettsWoodshop  6 месяцев назад

      As it turns out, MDF was a poor choice for substrate. The contracting of the squares split the MDF along its thickness and allowed the playing field to curl. Not good!! 😒

  • @sparetime2101
    @sparetime2101 3 месяца назад

    Well made perfectionist but for me, a bit of overkill re construction. I couldn’t afford so much time and instead would prefer to play the game. Another aspect I’m not struck on is the weight of such a thick board. Not something to carry around. I am going to explore veneer thickness end grain glued to a ply backing to make my Hnefatafl board, a checkered board 11*11 a Viking game. Yes I found the background music a distraction which doesn’t in my opinion enhance the presentation. Non the less thanks.😊
