David Bowie redefined musical genres and the potential of live performance for generations of music lovers. Creating and discarding a variety of personae and restlessly challenging musical boundaries, Bowie released timeless albums including Space Oddity, Hunky Dory, The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust…, Aladdin Sane, Diamond Dogs, Young Americans, Station to Station, "Heroes,” Let's Dance, Heathen, The Next Day and many more. Blackstar, Bowie’s 28th and final studio album, was released on his 69th birthday, January 8, 2016. David Bowie died on January 10, 2016, two days after the release of Blackstar. His body of work, his influence on the worlds of music, art, fashion, film, theatre and beyond, and his legacy of innovation and reinvention will live forever. 2022 kicks off with Bowie 75, a celebration of his 75th birthday with the Brilliant Adventure box set, the previously unreleased Toy, the 50th anniversary of Ziggy Stardust and a series of special events.

His smile and the thank you at the end, holy fuck.
For me, it's the audience crying out "me, ME, me" in the place of the final word, followed by the piano that I find so incredibly haunting.
It's like loving someone your entire life and never being able to tell them.
+Dolly Vicious He knew
+Derek Rosenfeld He knew he was going to die? No shit lol
i know exactly how you feel love xc
funny story about that I had the same thing happen this girl moved before I could ever hope to tell her she's now getting married so I'm listening to David bowie and come across "the hearts filthy lesson" and what do you know David starts singing Paddy Paddy the name of the girl I'm fixed on haha its pretty funny its almost like he knew or something
Babyfaced Baron I will not lol
the man who fell to earth made it back home and took our hearts with him
And he in turn left his with us.
+wendy testaburger man thats deep!
Very well said! I reflect upon your words as a dreaded anniversary awaits just around the corner, four day to be precise.
@Elaine Burgess..What a beautiful thing to say
@@fretkillrfan You brought tears into my eyes
0ne of his best songs; that most people don't recognize. But a major Bowie fan would
It's a cover...Brel
I remember watching this with my mom before she passed away, and she was like "He's crying" oh if only i knew how much she was crying inside. It was one of the only things I shared with her. Showing her my love for bowie but never showed her my love for her. If only i knew..
I'm terribly sorry for your loss, friend :(
+BolognaApocalypse Thanks you dear
Irma, u might think she didn't know but I'm also sure, that she did. Love is not something that is easily hidden.
Irma Keller that's lovely thanks for sharing that
thanks to you dear people for being so kind
One.of the early signs that Bowie was a staggeringly great singer. Can you imagine a current pop singer essaying the like?
Yes what about nick cave oh and so many others
I haven't enough words... Only tears. Rest in peace, brightest son of the universe. Thank you for everything.
Ageless
+Thomas Tyree True!!!
+Артём Починкин Beautiful written, so very true and the best description I have seen...
I'm devastated ... he was the greatest artist of all time ... He was my idol ... a unique star whose artistic legacy to the world is immeasurable. He contributed to Music, Fashion, Sexual Liberation and Style like no other. He redefined how people thought and lived. I am sure he's planning a total makeover to the place where he is now. Thanks for everything David ... so many people are going to miss you so much!
Wherever he is, lost in streams of sound, Mars, or heaven, we miss and love him and wish him nothing but our Man Who Fell To Earth the best after being with us for 69 years.
Why isn't this top comment? No we got "He knew he was doing to die" instead. He was a young mortal man covering a song and very well might I add... But Come on people! Wow
I was 15 when I saw him I’m now 58 he died too soon , he shaped my life made me realise my life is unique and I live it according to my rules….thank you my total hero ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
I was 16 when we saw him, I am 59 now. I have since been to 4 other concerts. I was introduced to David at a young age from my many musical Brothers and am forever grateful. We are the incredibly fortunate ones to have witnessed this Musical Genius. I lost my best Friend I never met. MISS YOU DAVID REST MY FRIEND.
Isolar II tour? Where did you see him?
This was written by Jacques Brel, a Belgian singer/songwriter whose work David Bowie admired.
French actually, saludos
@@DenZerda no no, Belgian :D
Il est né à Schaerbeek de parents belges et n'a jamais été naturalisé.
@@DenZerda Brel was Belgian but sang in French. I'm a massive fan of Brel, he was also a genius and his lyrics were beyond anything I've heard written in English.
@@craiglewis6145 I was reading a book with the best Bowie interviews, in one of them the editor talked about that song and said that the author was French; so thank you very much everyone for the clarification! Saludos 😊
I was watching the documentary "1971 - the year the music changed the world", and bowie arrived in america for the first time in 1971 trying to promote the man who sold the world record. he was holding parties, but in his parties people were bored because he was playing Jacques Brel covers. its little wonder this song seemed fresh when he reshaped it in the shape of the 'spiders from mars' sound in that era.
So beautifully dark and moving. What a performance. The nuances in the voice, aided by the haunting piano and naked guitar work, it all works great.. Bowie was a master musician and performer.
I agree. I don't think there are many rock stars who could sing a song like this the way he did, either vocally or emotionally. It was really impressive. He was so much more than "just" a rock star! What a talent.
Well here we are
+arsnakeheart yep
+arsnakeheart Yes, we are! What a talent! He will be one of pop's most legendary and influential figures up there with The Beatles, Elvis Presley, Bill Hayley, Madonna, and many of the major figures of Motown as having been one of the largest influences on the development of the genre since its inception in the 1950s.
+arsnakeheart FUCK
+wheelsdnfd40 please don't put madonna on the same pedestal as Bowie
+Tohru Adachi or the Beatles or god... Elvis? Come on, get outta here
Goodbye my friend who helped me make it through this life so many years ago, when I wasn't sure I could.
+melanie brandt I couldn't have said it better!
You are not alone. Carry on, with best wishes.
same here
Give me your hands...
"And in front of that door... there is..."
"ME!!!!!!! ME!!!!"
The way he smiles and says "thank you", it's like he could feel how much we all loved him and wanted him to be OK.
God, that part is so haunting. I get chills every time. The way the piano closes out the song and the frantic clapping is so eerily theatrical that it reminds me of the end of a performance in a vaudevillian cabaret.
He mentioned it backstage during a costume change.
And his eyes... man, those eyes says so much I think that
😶🌫🤯❤🩹🙏👁👁🧞🧙♀🧚♂
Such a powerful and mature performance by such a young man. Hard to believe he was just twenty five years of age singing and playing this truly difficult song.
Makes me cry I miss Beautiful Bowie every day I never met him he is my god always my Hero never be anyone that will come close to him Rip my Beautiful Starman love you always Thank you for all your wonderful songs you live on in mine and many others hearts forever ♥️
so true❤
Turn everything off. Lay down. Close your eyes and drift into this song. Listen to it. And tell me your life does roll slowly through your head. As all your memories rise up and follow your memories of bowie. Shh.. Try it.
+ThisYoungLibertine doing this just made me cry more than i already am. beautiful.
I really think that this is the song that I will have played at my funeral, i have loved him all my life, the day he died and it was all over the radio my wife woke me up and told me, I just started crying, he is and will be the only famous person who I cried like that for,, what more can I say...
Same, even now as much as I love his music it's still hard to listen to, but it's too beautiful not to.
I'll drink to this and the passing time.
One of the best songs he ever performed. It connected with me on an emotional level when I first heard it and it connects just as strong today.
I never knew you David, but it's like you were always there with me.
I wish you luck on your journey back to the cosmos. Farewell.
On the Lazarus video David ends the song/video by opening a door on a wooden box and walking into it then he's gone...this reminds me of that very sad moment... ;.(...... See you in the stars Dave.Love you, miss you until I die.
Good catch! There are so many easter eggs in Lazarus and Blackstar in reference to his past works.
we will see the great man again , i spent all my youth idolising david bowie RIP
The ulimate gift to us- Blackstar wrapped up EVERYTHING- answered all the riddles, let us in on what happened to each of his beloved invarnstions
His death was truly transformed into beautiful romanric goodbye art@
Beautiful, Mike Garson on piano.
Angel or Devil. . . . . I don't care. . . . for in front of that door is you.
Our king has gone home back to his home planet. We were so lucky to have him for the time we did. Love and respect Mr. Bowie and we shall see you again my friend.
With this song he made himself immortal
goodbye david, thank you for the music.
That was ABBA.
+Steve Mason cute..........
Goodbye Thin White Duke, we will always have your music.
His voice is so clean and powerful
IMMORTAL GENIUS REST IN PEACE DAVID BOWIE
He had it all, gorgeous man, real artist, beautiful singer, ahead of his time, always and forever the best.
The saddest part of this is how true it is for everyone. Thank you for your wisdom, David. Rest In Peace.
As Tony Visconti said hes life and dead was Art.There is you Who we remember💕
One of the best his performances. Only this one enough to consider him a great artist. Bravo!
Thank you for a lifetime of fantastic music. It's hard to believe you're gone but your music will always be with us.
I hope Ziggy Stardust is having a great time with Major Tom and The Starman somewhere on Mars tonight.
David Bowie takes Brel's song to a whole new level. Massive achievement; brilliant live performance.
English version by Scott Walker, another important influence on Bowie.
Never tired of this performance. So haunting. Mission in life is to learning guitar basics and play this. Watched this magician as the thin white duke at early court back along. Love him always. Love all bowie true followerrs x
Though I never met him, I knew him just the same. He was the friend of mine.
Thank you David Bowie. We all miss you.
that ending was beautiful!!
Dave. You changed my life. And many millions more of people you never met yet who felt profoundly connected to you and loved you. And still love you. And will ALWAYS love you. Your spirit lives on in your music and in us. The millions of your fans all over the world. Rest in peace STARMAN
This has always been a favorite of mine. It was simple, his vocals were strong and the way the light illuminated his bone structure and the glitter on his face is gorgeous. I'll miss you, Bowie. A true hero.
He sang this a lot live - it was a favorite - he did it different every time. but always with passion and full emotion. It will always be an honor to hear this music and absorb the many, many gifts he gave our world.
i miss you Bowie. You were a stellar Genius. Love
Rest in peace, Ziggy Stardust. The world just got a little less awesome. 😭😭😭
This song is the most hauntingly beautiful song I've ever heard.I keep playing it over and over.I grew up listening to him,and going to his concerts.I just can't believe he is gone. His death left a huge hole in my heart.Love you Starman.💖💖💖
I dont know where im going from here but i promise it wont be boring - David Bowie...RIP Starman x
Bowie's recognition and performance of an excellent piece of poetry by Brel. A man in his 20's singing about the one thing we all have in common. R.I.P David. You will be missed.
Such a born star! He must be a really bright star above our heads.
5:13 he look like he’s crying a little😞💕
One of Bowie's best cover just behind wild is the wind
Right on the money.
Happy Birthday, David! We still miss and love you. I remember seeing him in San Francisco on the Ziggy Stardust tour. When he got to this song in the middle of the set, that was it. I knew we were in the presence of a world-changing talent ... blew us all away ...
David Bowie I loved ever since I was five.
You got me beat. I was already 9 when I discovered him. My bro got the Ziggy album in 1974.
You beat me, too! 😆
I was 6 - just. I saw this most beautiful man singing with Bing Crosby next to that piano at Christmas 1977. Absolutely changed my life, and I'm so, SO grateful.
Thank you, David. For everything. ❤️❤️❤️
My death waits like an old rou?
So confident I'll go his way
Whistle to him and the passing time
My death waits like a bible truth
At the funeral of my youth
Weep loud for that and the passing time
My death waits like a witch at night
As surely as our love is bright
Let's not think about the passing time
But what ever lies behind the door
There is nothing much to do
Angel or devil, I don't care
For in front of that door, there is you
My death waits like a beggar blind
Who sees the world through an unlit mind
Throw him a dime for the passing time
My death waits there between your thighs
Your cool fingers will close my eyes
Let's not think of that and the passing time
My death waits to allow my friends
A few good times before it ends
So let's drink to that and the passing time
But what ever lies behind the door
There is nothing much to do
Angel or devil, I don't care
For in front of that door, there is you
My death waits there among the leaves
In magicians' mysterious sleeves
Rabbits and dogs and the passing time
My death waits there among the flowers
Where the blackest shadow, blackest shadow cowers
Let's pick lilacs for the passing time
My death waits there in a double bed
Sails of oblivion at my head
So pull up the sheets against the passing time
But what ever lies behind the door
There is nothing much to do
Angel or devil, I don't care
For in front of that door, there is you
God I miss this incredible man.😥 Remembering our beloved David Bowie today .🙏How do we ever thank him for all he gave us ?
Bowie girl forever
This is my all-time Jacques Brel song, translated in English by Eric Blau and Mort Shuman, and a great performance from David Bowie in 1973, and I still like this great show.
I am left cold. the world is less today. God Bless you David see you on the other side of that door.
Otherworldly... :'(
R.I.P. dear mr Bowie. I know that the angels awaited you behind that door.
I always come back to this video.
That voice.😢
4:47 - In case you need to listen to this part ten times.
Proof enough, of the existence of an objective standard
I know how you feel
True story. I listened to this song one evening for the first time in over 30 years. The next morning I heard the news that he had died that very evening...RIP
Wow how about that ?

Du warst ein ganz besondererMann.
RIP !! David Bowie
I love his pure courage. Living his own death, without yielding to it, burning brighter for it. Being, as R.M. Rilke put it, ". . . the crystal cup that shattered even as it rang."
Bowie forever 😔
6 years today, loved you since 1973
Have a good journey our friend, beautiful human, thank you for your music, your soul and your sense of humor... We will miss you. I only regret never to have had the opportunity to see you in concert.

This song and the visual image of this performance had such a profound effect on me when I first saw it
Just watched this the other day on his birthday, and didn't think anything much about this song. Hurts to watch it now.

My God the emptiness without him
Blazing Starman. Inspiration that made me realize being me was more than enough. Thank you David. You are and will always be unsurpassed. You are so, so missed. But damn, you went out in style. A great picture on your birthday, and a #1 album. You are the coolest ever. Ever.

I love his songs
I love watching him sing this in the movie. After the concert, he was clearly touched by the audience response to his last line.
His voice though ughhhhhh 😍😦
