Man knew he was dying but instead of being afraid looked death in the eye and used him as inspiration for his final masterpiece. Absolute respect to this legend. What a noble way to go out. May he rest in piece
DiX Inc. right? I think Bowie showed us that there is nothing to fear in death. As Mark Twain said “ I had been dead for billions and billions of years before i was born and do not recall suffering the slightest inconvenience from it”. Perhaps the Starman has begun a new journey in a new universe?
@Joan *Now that's a comforting introspection of our lives. When life gets a bit too heavy to stand up, or too depressing to roll out of bed, such a thought lifts my spirits to arise and soar, knowing why it is I decided to come to the Planet to begin with. Thank You!*
Bowie plays three roles, and the message is that while he may be dying, his muse (The Flamboyant Trickster) will live on through others! It couldn't be plainer for one paying attention in an insane fake world.
He came as a Starman waiting in the sky and left as a Blackstar, completing his own life cycle. Just phenomenal. Bowie will always be the true music God.

God is good to me. I never met Bowie, but after an Iggy concert in Harvard Square in 77, a limo was parked at a red light. I ran up to it....and through smokey glass, Bowie, Iggy and Debbie Harry all leaned forward, smiled widely and waved. The light turned green, they were gone. No one else was around . Thank you.....Universe.

He was also inspired by politics, Current affairs, classic Hollywood, science fiction, psychology; krautrock, Americana, the golden age of cinema and the culture of Weimar Germany.
Today, me, my dad and my younger brother went to the veterinary clinic to put the cat to sleep, because he felt bad, something with kidneys and some tumor, he was 18 years old, operations would only hurt him, because they are serious, and the chance that he would survive would be minimal, operations are expensive and there was no hope, a lot of money would have been spent and not the fact that he would have survived, and if he would He would have lived with a month and that's it, it was not worth it, so it was decided to put him to sleep, my father and I cried, hard, the cat went bad, faded for a couple of days, we said goodbye to him and went home. The cat has lived with me my whole life, I turn 16 tomorrow, have pictures and videos from my childhood with him. He was like a big brother to me. Thank you so much to David Bowie for his work, it's this song that keeps me sane for now. Listened to it and Black star by Radiohead as we drove there and realized that nothing lasts forever and everything has to be said goodbye to
So sorry for your loss. I lost my 13 year old cat a day after her cancer surgery. I never thought before that it would hit me that hard. But here I am still mourning her after 2 years. I'm still feeling like I lost a very close family member. Losing a pet is very painful but it's also hard to understand for people who never experienced it.
So sorry to heard of your loss I understand what you are going through as I’ve had to bury and mourn beloved furry loved ones.. then later my parents. I am a 60 year old professor scientist.… I too turn to BOWIE. He is transcendent… he helps us transcend too. I wish you well on the adventure that is your lifetime.
Sorry for your loss, we’ve experienced it too, the oldest of our 5 cats (19 yrs) had liver and heart problems and eventually became blind. She cried so pitifully, and the vet (who’s cared for her all 19 years) assured us there was no more that could be done to ease her suffering. So we took the hardest decision ever, and had her put down. Terrible time, but she had a good life and it would have been shameful to make her suffer more. Bless you ❤️🇷🇴
In the theatre when an actor undoes their sleeve buttons it is their last performance. Bowie honors this in both Blackstar and Lazarus. So many small details and many a thoughtful moment to say his final farewell. I'll keep coming back. My kids will know him.
My child knows him, and they once asked, "Why is David Bowie your favorite?" And I said, "Because he was brave, and that makes me feel brave because I'm always afraid." That and the music. Naturally.
Yea, I'm curious if someone like Axel Rose or Bruce Springsteen will go out with a bang. They are both intense like Bowie when it comes to their music. I'm not so sure about Axel Rose though. He's too jacked up from drugs.
You should check out the song by GnR called Catcher in the Rye.... the demo version. I think it was a very underrated song. The demo is way better than the album version. I think it was the best song on Chinese Democracy. The overall album was decent but way overproduced. If they released in 1999 like they were supposed to it would have been a bigger hit. A lot of the songs have potential. I'm guessing a few might be reproduced by artists in the future with a better updated sound. Seems like Axel had to throw in a few too many excessive 80's guitar riffs where they weren't needed.
Imagine knowing you have terminal cancer and still getting up to go to work every day, David is not only one of the best musicians ever to walk the planet he’s also one of the bravest. We miss you 💫 man.
The only other musician I can say did the same was Leonard Cohen, he literally wrote a whole album with the help of his son about his death, and wherever they are (I bet they're in the Tower of Song, like Cohen said, we'd be hearing from him even after he's long long gone) they're damn legends.

He stared death in the face, and created this. To me, it captures the feeling of accepting your own mortality perfectly. A true artist right until the end. Fucking inspirational
+Anthony Ramirez ...and this would bother you if it were true? Were you put on earth to police the world and berate anyone who doesn't believe in what you believe? If so, you are involved in one fucked up religion.
My mother died from cancer in 2006. I watched her die right in front of my eyes, so I have an idea of what David Bowie and his family went through. And this song (and video) captures the process so well. It's eerie and haunting, like living with the knowledge that you have terminal cancer and your days on Earth are numbered. I can't even imagine what kind of fearful thoughts went through Bowie's mind during his last days. Obviously they inspired much of this video and "Lazarus". I keep coming back to these songs because Bowie was one of my all-time favorite artists and his death reminded me of my own mortality. Every single person on Earth will die at some point, and that's terrifying to think about.
+Ivan Mrsic I agree with every word! Oh, your comment is exactly what I've been thinking since I saw this video (and Lazarus, too) when Bowie died. My father died (at 68) of cancer in 2013; he died almost a year after his diagnosis. I believe he did not want to die and he was afraid. It was a year of hell. I'm sorry for your loss. This album, the videos - brilliant and brave.
Were all immortal. Even the most confused and possessed sinners. Meant to share spirit, not be locked in at birth by these ideological systems which none of us ever built. I don't believe those in the highest levels of control want to remain caught and entrapped as well.
He never looked old to me, he always looked the same age, no matter what age he was. It was a shock to me when I heard he had died. We've lost one of the greatest musicians EVER.
I like the fact that Bowie wrote and recorded one of his greatest songs at the end of his life. It's as if his whole life was his art, and therefore needed a finale.
Yes! Absolutely. His whole LIFE was art. Not just for us as viewers but mainly for himself. It was amazing to live AS David Bowie. "I love life very much indeed".
it was utter carnage, absolutely gut wrenching. thank goodness i had a work shift scheduled for the 10th, but god.... i lost it entirely 3 days later. It's still so hard to cope with.
It never actually occurred to me that Bowie would---let alone could---die. I thought I was sad when Lou Reed passed. Then Bowie left us, then Leonard Cohen bowed out at the end of 2016. What a goddamned awful year. We still feel the reverberations.
When I was a wee lass in the eighties, my mum told me Bowie was way ahead of his time so we should feel privileged to be alive in his lifetime to experience his brilliance. It was definitely a privilege.
What an incredible artist he was. His last album was very dark and very sad; this album was about the last chapter of his life. May God rest his beautiful soul.
skilled person I believe she (and all who respect and cherish David's art and music) is referring to his entire body of work. Why must she "explain" this video or its meaning(s)? Are you frightened or somehow wounded by this video/music? Search inside your own heart and soul for serenity, tranquility, peace, grace, love, happiness, contentment, etc... It kind of sounds as though you're attempting to pin something sinister or negative to this video/music...
I honestly can not explain the lyrics or video. I don't believe anyone can, for that matter. Bowie's music was a journey, not a destination. His music and art gave us something to think about. I think it was his goal to let us interpret and take away from his music that had the most meaning to each of us. I believe his last album, "Blackstar" was a very personal journey for him. I think he achieved all that he wanted to, and a lot of critics are saying his last album was his greatest masterpiece.
ToonieMama i can explain some of it, In the villa of Ormen. city of serpent (demons) Stands a solitary candle: the light bearer Lucifer.. did you get it now?
Its 2024 and all this time I have thought that this is just an aberration. A meaningless dirge, the king's new clothes, and I have ignored it. It is now my turn. I have got months left to live and I can't stop playing this. It somehow gives me comfort. Not hope because there is no hope but peace and acceptance. I don't understand it or how it works. There is no jolly song that I can hum or whistle but I can face what is coming with David's help and for that I am so very grateful.
I recently lost a dear friend far too soon. I didn't know what to say, and so I didn't say anything. I still don't know what to say. Maybe there isn't anything. I'll join you when it's time. Until then.
My dad passed away from pancreatic cancer four months after this album was released. This song to me perfectly captured the emotion associated with the fight, acceptance, and transition he experienced. I'll always remember Bowie and my dad when I hear this.

There’s also a long list of celebrities and entrepreneurs including David Bowie, Elvis, Marilyn Monroe, Michael Jackson, Robin Williams, Steve Jobs, and Whitney Houston. So, how does one account for something as unbelievable as this? Well, each person named above, and those whose names haven’t been revealed yet, have their own story, and soon you’ll be learning about it. However, in the meantime, here’s the short version. Each one of these people, at one point, entered into a worldwide witness protection program. Wondering what these individuals needed protection from? It’s something the likes of which the average man or woman has never been confronted with. Although it may sound funny, each one of us will eventually have a role in the “Big Picture,” too. What is it? We need to respectfully listen to their stories and begin to understand the “as yet, unrecognized threat” that humanity has been living amongst. Bottom line is that we must give these brave people an opportunity to tell their stories and face head-on the Truths that we’ll be given in order to protect our families and ourselves now and forever more. Best way for us to complete our responsibility is to have unwavering faith in our Creator, God Eternal. If you listen to the song carefully its almost as if Bowie was moving through decades of his own musical styles and has them all represented in one song.
There is lot to it. This song can be intepreted in many ways, though I think the ultimate message was a huge criticism of things we believe in. You need to know history of religion and ideologies well to see the references in it, same as in many other songs. Some say that China Girl was just a commercial pop songs, but for a person who knows the political history of China, it is obvious the song and the video were representing what has been happening in China since the beginnings of the XIXth century, up to the 80ies.
@@SparrowNoblePoland It's true however 'China Girl' was written by Iggy Pop. I think it was more of a casual observation he was making on culture, so it is still there. How deep the message in songs go is often granted a lesser AND a greater meaning by the audience and whether the artist is being literal in their message or not. Art is a mirror full of symbolism. Some artists are seen as much smarter and deeper than they are just by making reference. That's part of the charm. They cause people to think, sometimes way more than the artist actually has. Bowie considered himself a Gnostic Christian. More of a mystical rudimentary form, not adhering to the doctrines of organized religion. I'd say he was a believer but just as much a Buddhist, occultist or even pagan. He has said that he had no interest in knocking anyone's religion and found them fascinating. Bowie was an observer not a critic with harsh opinions. That's what made him interesting. You do stuff like observe honestly and people will have you lynched for it. Artists with strong gripes aren't for me, neither are pretentious and dishonest ones.
finnibert lunchiken Incorrect. Bowie wrote China Girl and gave it to Iggy Pop, then later decided to release it himself. I should know. I’m named after the song. Lol.
This completes the trilogy: Space Oddity (introduction of Major Tom), Ashes to Ashes (the resurrection of Major Tom), BACKSTAR (the god status of Major Tom). Well done Dave!
+Tony Martin Hallo Spaceboy? Nitpicking aside, I like your take. It's amazing how each of these songs gives new context and thus a new meaning to the last.
It’s so amazing of him that he made this last album for us. Turning his death into art. He could have chilled out and relaxed for the last part of his life, but he out so much effort into this. I have great respect for him

At the end, the snare drum stops like the last beat of a dying heart, the sounds play on momentarily and then cut to nothing... It's like a musical representation of death. He was such a genius
Still the weirdest, creepiest, most brilliant song/album I've ever heard. I remember this came out like 2 days before he died and everyone was just baffled. There were so many theories in just those 48 hrs. Then he died and it all fucking made sense. GOAT.
I got this album the day it came out, and the fact that he kept his illness under wraps...I like, sobbed for what felt like forever when it was announced he passed just days later. I still have a hard time listening to this album, but it’s the absolute most Bowiest of all Bowie.
Experimental Bowie is best Bowie. Seriously, Blackstar was Bowie without any restrictions on what he could do and it's my favorite album from him for it.
He was always unrestricted, always one step ahead of the rest, always daring to step into unknown territory and shattering preconceived notions. A true innovator that shaped music in ways many people take for granted. His album "Outside" which a lot of people overlook due to it being released in 1995 (he was planning on revisiting it, actually) is a perfect example. I've been a Bowie fan long before the news of his death, but I still keep discovering gems, another one being "Earthling". Just as he has no two albums sounding the same, he also has no peers. He immortalised his life into his art and decided that was to be his parting gift to us. I have nothing but deep admiration for the man.
He treated songs like paintings. Each one had it's own life. 40 years of music & you can't name 2 Bowie songs that sound alike. There will never be another David Bowie.

Remember while you're jamming this that Bowie was basically recording the Blackstar album while he was literally dying of cancer and he dropped it just 2 days before his passing. ABSOLUTE boss level. RIP to one of the greatest songwriters and performers of the 20th century.
So sad how much he aged in the face in just a few years. Just 15 years ago he still looked years younger than his age! One of the most influential artists of the last century.
This song starts very eerie and ominous... Then becomes a beautiful ballad... Then goes back to being eerie and ominous. It's like a musical final breath.
I don't think a song or an album can express death or impending doom any further than this. This is created by a man that knows he is going to die very soon. RIP Bowie.
I agree with You Dabee. Today was the first time I could listen to this Black Star and Lazarus and it´s still hurts too much, he must have known he´s going to die.
His life was expressed through his art and he knew it. It is fitting and so perfect in the way that he came full circle to complete his masterpiece with this last album strategically released around the time of his death. I believe it ties up his life's music and closes all of it with a very fitting conclusion. A true artist.
It definitely has that quality! You feel you understand, and you've learned what he means. Then you know you don't. And you come back, and you listen. You learn a bit more. Fragments upon fragments forming a hard message are in there. Maybe? Or maybe it's all so very simple.
Crystal Japan, great tune. So great in fact that Trent Reznor thought he was a genius for writing it, only for Bowie to tell him he had merely subsconciously transcribed it.
How he “burned out” instead of fading away. How he absorbed the best of his modern influences while still maintaining the core of who he was as an artist. He used his death as reflexive creation, and invited us in the innermost private experience a human being could have.
@@hb-fc3jj no, he wasn’t trying to be relevant, he was writing for himself again instead of for an audience, but he was always ahead of his time. He was writing music in 1997 that didn’t become mainstream until 2008

People say the internet reduces peoples attention spans. I haven't watched a 3 min song on youtube through to the end in ages. But I can watch 10 mins of Bowie through just fine twice once after another. Shows just how much crap content is out there and proves that people like Bowie and the things they produce are gold dust.
He was a true artist. It wasn't just about the music, it was about the visuals and the way you experience the concept. Absolute genius. They don't come along very often and the mold was definitely broken after Bowie. RIP Sir ❤
The fact that the ending had the snare slowly stop just breaks my heart. Bowie tried to signify his heart stop beating towards the end of his life. RIP Bowie
And the last few seconds of song with the flute... the very end of life, brain activity dying down but keeping the essential vitality and "strivingness" of his theme song of personality until it falters into discord in the last few notes. Makes me think about how electrical activity in the brain shows up on meters when they are measuring someone's level of consciousness.
But this song is the first song of the album, if what you are saying that it signifies what you think it does, shouldn't this song be the final song of the album?
I'm wondering what some of the visuals are supposed to mean. That... creature at the end, is it the twisted concept of what the women imagine Major Tom to be? When it attacks the strawmen, the masked Bowie reacts as if he is being attacked. The strawmen are the characters Bowie created over the years? It still racks my brain.

I remember healing my tattoo of a red and blue bolt as this came out. I had gone to the David Bowie exhibition and fell in love with him after seeing his clothes, his thoughts and how he treated the world. I was so excited and ran to get the clear vinyl of blackstar. Then I found out what it meant. I was 16 and silly, I didn't eat for 2 days and cried every night for a month listening to David's music. No matter how old I am, I never stopped loving his music and how he touched my life. Not to be parasocial, but I stopped fearing dressing how I wanted because of him. I'll go out wearing an old dress if I want. I spent my entire teen years obsessed with this man.
When you're slowly dying but you make an amazing album and great music videos because you can't leave without a parting gift for the world. That's what true legends do.
it's so fitting that david got to go out leaving us with something to mull over and internalize for a while. we'll look back at this video in twenty years and finally, truly understand what we lost today. thank you.
HighPacheChief David spent his life preaching love for and by the downtrodden and strange. In this sense, he was far more a follower of the teachings of Christ than the apostates you're shouting on the corners for. I pray that you find the love of God and repent for your hateful, sinful ways.
+HighPacheChief It is not satanic. Nor was he a satanist. It is art. And in accord with batwingedloony's comment I have not begun to absorb it yet. It is intense. The diamond encrusted skull might allude to bone cancer or metastases. It's full of symbolism and art. Apparently some of the dancing is inspired by the way characters move in Popeye animations. It is intense, readable, it has beauty.
HighPacheChief I'm not preaching hatred as the "teachings of christ," YOU ARE, so I'm pretty comfortable saying that you need to come to God before it's too late.
I remember watching this and the Lazarus video when they came out. I'm starting to really appreciate his last works now rewatching these, the videos for both of those songs depict a creepy, mystical world that he had an image for. Massive respect for him for creating one final album right before he passed away, where he shows us these mysterious videos. I can't imagine how much time and hidden meanings there are to these videos, it really is unbelievable. Rest in peace David Bowie.
I only just learned about the context behind these videos. I wasnt aware that bowie knew he was dying during the making of these, I just thought it was an odd coincidence he died after. Knowing what was really going on and rewatching them almost brought me to tears.
In Lazarus, he says "dropped my Cellphone down below". He makes a Steampunk video but throws that in there. For a Reason. And I am literally the FIRST PERSON in the World to figure all this out!
@@lung_licker Even in this very song, David Bowie says "Somebody else took his place, and bravely cried, i'm a blackstar." Beautiful and frightening, sensual and repulsive, sacred and profane - it's a paradox, that's why it's so mysterious, so brilliant. People fear death as they fear their own imaginations. Bowie was a searcher - death is uncharted territory.

Sorry for your loss, we’ve experienced it too, the oldest of our 5 cats (19 yrs) had liver and heart problems and eventually became blind. So we took the hardest decision ever, and had her put down. Terrible time, but she had a good life and it would have been shameful to make her suffer more. Bless you ❤️🇷🇴

+Henry TheGreatAmerican I agree with you on Axel Rose--completely. Bruce Springsteen, not sure at this point.

If you listen to the song carefully its almost as if Bowie was moving through decades of his own musical styles and has them all represented in one song.
The final masterpiece
The whole album really. I feel there are a lot of parallels with Station to Station.
Lol.

His life was expressed through his art and he knew it.
