Thanks for the overall walking commentary and explanation of how you “look” while on the streets. Some really wonderful images too ! I like the effect from the 50mm. Well done !
Great video! I haven’t done a lot of street photography in the last few years, as I haven’t been close to a city to do the work. But several years ago I lived in San Francisco, which is an ideal city to do this kind of work. My technique was very similar, walking through the city and moving towards the action rather than wait for people to come to me. After a while , you can develop lighting reflexes and capture things that only come together for a fraction of a second. Again, great video and great work!
You blitzed it. Some wonderful frames most of which I had no idea you was spotting as we walked. Photography is seeing rather than looking and how you see is fascinating. Great video too mate love the commentary into the frames.
I enjoyed watching thanks 🙏 the funny thing is I am shooting with a wide angle lens now when I was always using a 35mm manual prime lens. I suppose another challenge for me. Are you going to join Gary in Blackpool on the 29th and 30th of June at the workshop I know you do your stuff it would be great to meet you as I am doing the Gary workshop then 👍
It was interesting to see how you went about your shoot, it's given me a few ideas. I shoot in Manchester most Saturdays and always find something interesting to take.
Thanks for the interesting perspectives, very valuable. I didn’t know that you were a mate of Gary’s… I very much enjoy yours and his channel. Greetings from Australia.
Enjoyed the commentary very much. Interesting that you were out with Gary. I enjoy both your channels and I'm looking forward to seeing his take on the same day as his mantra tends to be making things happen rather than waiting for things to happen. Personally I enjoy a bit of both :-)
Loved that photo with that guy with the star next to him. You’re inspiring me to get out and shoot more film. Developing and waiting to see the results is always exciting to me.
Thank you for the comments while making those shots, was nice to have a perspective of how you approach each moment. Time to go and practice as well ;)
Loved the video, have the same issues trying to move from 35 to 50mm. Difficult to think different when moving to 50, especially with distance. Thnxx for sharing.
Excellent stuff. I work on St Peter’s Sq and I regularly have a lunch time ramble with my camera, usually with a 28mm. This has inspired me to use the 50mm a bit more. 👍
Love this video! Thank you for inviting us into your bird's eye view! I really liked your book reviews...what happened to them? Would you ever consider doing more of them on you tube? I really loved the best books about street photography and the ones you had on your site. Please do more! LOL
@@WalkLikeAlice I'll recruit demand! LOL I understand but...and maybe I'm a rarity here...your recommendations are so spot on. I bought Shadows on the Wall by Peter Lindbergh because of your review and Harry Gruyaert as well.

I love these povs; great shots and explanations. I was just wondering though, do you say anything once a person makes eye contact or just keep walking? I feel like I'd have to say something to reassure them.
Great content and breakdown of your creative process. I wonder if you can enlighten me on one technical aspect. I’m a big fan of 28mm and I wonder how you achieve focus using 28mm on a rangefinder when using a wide aperture (f2-2.8)+ viewfinder. Do you still use the rangefinder to achieve focus/ or simply judge the distance?
@@WalkLikeAlice wow thx for the reply. Do you use 28mm for your wedding work often? and if yes, is there any difference from the way you work on the street?
When you're shooting monochrome, do you bunch together values or focus mainly on general shape language? Like color shooters are always looking for color harmony or hue echo and such. Do you "convert" colors to values and chase them.. or just kind of follow interesting subjects and then frame them by contrast?
Good question. TBH, I've never really thought about it. I've shot predominantly in mono for my entire 35 year career. So I guess my eye is used to looking for things which interest it in terms of monochrome. I don't actively think "ooh this will make a great b/w shot" I've never done that.
@@WalkLikeAlice Interesting. I shoot color, but only recently rangefinder. Prior I was shooting typical mirrorless and using JPG+RAW, then setting the JPG to monochrome and in the EVF I could see the world in monochrome. Coming over to OVF it's been interesting trying to weld shapes by value without the "cheat" of the EVF converting them to values for me. Bring a painter by trade makes it easier, but still a very interesting challenge. Anyway, I always like your value bunching and subject framing based on value contrast, so I wanted to pick your brain a bit. Sounds like it's a rather intuitive choice for you, built on years of building your eye.
Fabulous and informative video, thanks....I see that all the editing is with your Silverchrome presets, is there any way these can work with Photoshop or are there any similar presets that you know of for Photoshop, after years of using it I haven't got my head round Lightroom yet!
If you load Silverchrome into Adobe Camera Raw you can use them there. If you shoot jpeg, you can open ACR from inside Photoshop and apply the presets there. I do this all the time with things like iPhone images.
@@WalkLikeAlice Thanks...I shoot Raw, load to Photoshop, and if converting to mono I edit with either Silver Efex or Camera Raw presets, then convert to jpeg, does it sound like I could use your presets in that process?
@@mikesmithwick1570 So if you are going into ACR for the RAW editing, you can use SilverChrome when you are doing your edits. Lightroom is essentially Adobe Camera Raw with a file browser attached. There are a few changes to the user interface, but other than that, they are exactly the same apps. Silverchrome was designed and tested in ACR, long before it got to Lightroom :)
@@WalkLikeAlice Hi, all paid for and downloaded but I'm afraid I might need a little help importing to ACR....imported the zipfile and only have 9 presets showing, none of which are converting to mono, I imagine I'm doing something stupid, any help gratefully accepted!
U You mentioned getting away grom WA using a 50mm lens but couldnt help noticing that the majority of your shots were on 28mm. Is that your preferred lens?
Your channel has really inspired me to return to my roots. Im now 82yrs old and was a pro shooter back in 1960s and 1970s shooting 90% b&w film, developing negs and printing up to 20x24. Covered the slums in manila to avante gard modelling shoots etc. All in monochrome. Then it died. Digital came along and only recently has been good enough to compete at least in the print world with film. Did youtube videos, gopros etc. Finally back to my roots with b&w in digital. Have a GX85 with Leica Lumix 25mm and loving it. Got back those old vibes I had in the 1960s an 70s. When we opened our studio I had large b&w prints hanging from the ceiling lit with ultra violet lights. So thanks for the inspiration you have given me down here in New Zealand. THANKYOU.
A photo with a woman and a poster 100 out of 100 ... for me this is the most successful shot))) and I know a friend of yours, a street thief) also subscribed to it)
A true Blackpoolian doing Manchester 😅😅😅 Have used that train station few times - not so busy as Blackpool North. How did you manage to manual focus all these shots? Leica is a masterpiece but manual focus in 2024...
@@WalkLikeAlice you said that you are still trying to shoot from the hip with your 50mm like you said with your wide 28mm,just wondering why you don't drop the hip shooting and do lcd waiste or viewfinder eye with the 50mm to get a more accurate shot that you intended.
Question: Have you ever been approached and asked if you were taking someone's picture, and had any anger issues from people that realized you were shooting them? Legal or not, some people can be very sensitive. Just wondering how you deal with that aspect.
Thank you for sharing your insights and your tips. I really need the help and appreciate yours.
