    Dear Jeff,
    Thank you for this video and the previous others that are all extremely helpful to me as I get back into serious photography after too many years away from it. This video may be considered a technical gear video but it's so refreshing as a non-geek "techish" video by such great photographers - rare these days.
    Not many photographers with you and your wife's talent and credentials offer this for which I am grateful. I only wish I could obtain the end result that you and Sarah do in my own photographs but I at least believe I can get close with hard work and your help. Thank You!
    Your on-site shoot videos, Leica Master Shot Behind The Image, etc... and editing videos and zoom tuition that we are now into have influenced me in tremendously. The filming of how you and Sarah shoot show exactly the decisive moment after leading up to it and then..... the still image - brilliant. I've never seen this before or at least done so well.
    Please keep these type videos coming as well as the others you produce and share. Again, Many Thanks.

    As someone that chased camera tech for years from system to system and finally got fed up with all the whistle and bells I realized I did not need any of those fancy features that I felt I had to have. I sold everything for an old Leica M240 with a small 35mm lens and have never been happier while out making photo's and my back loves me for not lugging all that crap around that I used to..
    If you carry a lot of gear around then you have to many choices to make for the image you want to capture and by the time you make that choice the moment has past and you missed that chance..
    One camera, one lens works best for ME.. Zone focusing is faster than any auto focus on the market... Great video thank you...

      Absolutely spot on. I was a Canon Ambassador for nine years. Every piece of gear Canon made was available for me to use. It use to make my head explode. I was always second guessing my lens choice. Absolute nightmare. When I resigned from Canon five years ago, I sold all of my Canon gear and went back to using my M9 full-time. I was a lot happier.

    Vintage lenses with the monochrom is an amazing combination. None of the negatives like ‘purple fringing’ and all the character, with the details of the CCD sensor which punches well above the 18mp without the Beyer filter.

    I really love my trusty old Leica M9. I have had it for years and bought it just after the sensor was replaced. I am very grateful. It is also well worn, but still works like a charm. I had an M8 before that, and loved the images from that sensor as well (even though it was a crop sensor). Thanks for the video!

    It was your channel that convinced me to make the move to Leica M9. I love it. It’s a camera and not a computer, it’s exactly what I needed. My copy I got cheap as it does have the sensor issue and if I’m honest I wasn’t sure if I’d like the Leica, so was reluctant to pull the plug on something expensive. Went in cheap to test the waters so to speak. Having said that, I do a lot of gig photography so shooting wide open a lot of time in dark venues and the issue doesn’t present itself really. Anything smaller that f3.5 from 35mm or longer and it’s okay. So not ideal for street, but that’s not really my thing. Also, the M9 is ISO invariant up to ISO 640. So you can shoot two stops under 640 and pull back in post. You get better highlight retention etc. keep up the great work mate.

    • @WalkLikeAlice
      @WalkLikeAlice  Год назад +1

      I would be happier underexposing at 320iso. We do that a lot with landscapes when we want to hold highlight detail in the sky. 640 is a bit too much on the limit for me.

    • @derrenleepoole
      @derrenleepoole Год назад +1

      @@WalkLikeAlice Hi Jeff, it wouldn't make any difference. The M9 is ISO-less up to 640. As the base ISO is only 160, it's only 2 two stops, it can help and it does work. I was sceptical of it, but I did some test shots at ISO 640 making a note of the shutter speed and aperture used, then did the exact same shot at base ISO with same shutter speed and aperture as previous. Pulled the shot in post 2 stops and it was exactly the same... only difference was highlight retention was a bit better.

    This is the first video I see from you. I subscribe your comment about establishing a “relationship” with a camera, and it’s been very interesting to see how you set up your cameras. I use 4 Leicas paired in two's: M9p and M10r, S2 and S3. None of them was bought new, but the 9 has been with me for very long, and many of the dings are mine. My lens of choice is the 50 mm, which is much less forgiving than the 28 -I use the latter and the 75 with the 10r-, and my line of work is different too -I can take time to focus without the fear of losing a scene-. I was out with my mate in Bournemouth on Monday this week shooting and he asked me about using Leica M cameras (I was shooting film that day). It was hard to explain, beyond saying that it creates a certain way of looking and experiencing the world with a camera that is very rewarding and engaging. I love using zone focus. I shot the winter solstice at Stonehenge last month (it's only 10 minutes from home), where I switched between near and far settings. It's just a ridiculously quick way to shoot - it gets the shots (there's a crappy slideshow on my 'channel' as I ain't no RUclipsr!)

    I've just snapped one from Ebay! Black M9 with two owners 997 shots taken through all her life. Virtually looks like new! It was my dream camera 14 years ago when it came out but I had no money then. It was too good shape not to purchased it now and surprisingly good price. It has original sensor and that's obviously worrying but there isn't any visible corrosion at the moment like none. But let's say I have options including trying replacing filter on my own wow. I can't wait to take it on a street Jeff. Thank you for all the tips 🙏 I already purchased some SanDisk ultras from Amazon : ) Lately I noticed that I am using not the new one ( I am Fuji owner) xe4 which is quick and snappy but old one xe2 as it gives me more pleasing colours pallette straight out of the camera and slowing down my process but in a rewarding way. I might try and get the Monochrom in the future, but for now having the option to shoot in colour and B&W is a nice to have. Regarding cards for the M9/M-E you can actually use higher cards than 32GB, but you need to format them in FAT32, once you do that higher capacity SD cards will work, I currently use a SanDisck 64GB and had no issues. Very interesting video, Jeff. I currently use a Q2 but have owned and used Leica cameras (digital and film) and lenses extensively over the last 20+ years. I couldn't agree more about not needing to constantly be looking to upgrade. Although I'm now (mostly) a Fuji X-series photographer, I use the X-Pro1 and X-Pro2 models and haven't felt the urge to 'upgrade' to the X-Pro3. I'll reserve judgment on any potential X-Pro4 model, though. The digital Leica I miss most is the M9 Monochrom. That would be the one I'd aim for if I were to get more involved with Leica again.

      The thing with upgrades is that after 2012, they were more incremental than ground breaking. However, the manufacturers, influencers, and ambassadors want you to buy the latest and greatest, even though, more often than not, they aren't either.

    In China, people said, the Leica M9 with CCD ID15 or ID16, doesn't have the problem. And it's twice the price of ordinary m9 in chinese market lol. Oh....I live in Australia now, find a m9 with CCD ID15 on Ebay, price is 3300AUD. Would love to buy one for my birthday but my wife will kill me.

    Great video. I switched back to film having shot with a Nikon D700 (which is a great camera by the way) and made the jump to Leica in 2010.
    I now shoot with an MP .72 and and MD262, both owned from new and I can’t imagine ever needing anything else. The MD262 is 2016 digital technology and looks superb to my eyes.
    Paired up with a 50mm summilux, 28mm summicron and 90mm macro elmar makes the perfect compact setup for me.

    • @WalkLikeAlice
      @WalkLikeAlice  Год назад

      It depends on the camera model. With the M8/M9 variants, the camera doesn’t recognise anything over 32GB. With later models M240/M10/M11 you can use much larger cards.

    I shot with a Leica CL once a few years back. It worked well and the jpg color pallet was very good. But , I could never use a rangefinder. I stopped using the viewfinder 20 years ago when I switched to digital, and never looked back. I see the world with both eyes in the screen intuitively and rarely ever compose beyond what my mind sees on the screen in an instant. Looking through a viewfinder with one (My left) does not work for me and I get bad photos when I do that. I have to see both what I am shooting and the screen together, or even just what I am seeing and point the camera without using a screen at all to get good pictures. It has taken years of constanrt practice photographing every day to get to this point.

      I don’t think so. I know they went through some graphics changes on the outside of the battery, but other than that. We just put a blob of coloured nail varnish on our new ones so we can tell where they are in the mix.

      @@MrDs131 cameras are only serviced when something goes wrong. M9 are pretty solid cameras. As of today, the two M9s and my Monochrom were last serviced when the sensors were replaced. Sarah’s Mono was badly damaged when she was shooting a couple of years ago. That needed a full repair. I’ve also got a heavily used M8 that’s never been in to Leica for anything. We send them to Leica Uk and they send them to Wetzlar.

    I bought an M9 when it came out. Expensive but my first serious digital and I felt worth it to get into a new way to make my photography with all my M- series lenses. When the monochrome became available it seemed my ideal camera with a continuous ‘roll of B&W film.’ Finally got one a few years later with the prices down and with a trade and have not been disappointed. Unfortunately, I just couldn’t afford both and sold the M9, which I'm coming more and more to regret. Oh well…, I did get another old piece of tech with a Leica SL for color a few years ago and it does have advantages, more modern features and faster, the finder, use with other lenses and an adapter. So, the monochrome for that RF experience and works well for digital B&W with M-series lenses, and the SL for color and vintage lenses like the old takumars to view all their character (1957 58mm f2 ‘Sonnar’ is one of my favorites) in the great EVF.

    That bit about the batteries requires a bit of spice to be honest. I have no clue about the batteries in your Leica cameras so it is rather a statement to prevent harm from being done to the viewers expensive tech. Li-Ion batteries (that are probably used in most cameras) don't suffer from memory effect. So completely discharging them does no benefit to the battery life. To the contrary: The more often you do this, the more charging cycles are used. Storing Li-Ion batteries in a discharged state causes bigger problems. Storing batteries at 100% charge isn't too good either.
    Intentionally emptying an older battery to 0% can be quite useful though: The device can then recalibrate to how big the remaining capacity of the battery is. You may know this from mobile phones were the last 1% or 2% akku charge lasts surprisingly long: A too little capacity had been assumed by the device previously.

      Thanks for the comments. My experience with camera batteries comes from spending 9 years as ambassador for Canon and the advice I was given at the time by their technical experts. I’m not saying it’s correct, but that’s where it has come from. With M9 batteries the battery meter is notoriously inaccurate and discharging the battery before charging tends to give a more accurate idea of battery status.

    • @markymark240682
      @markymark240682 Год назад

      You should never fully discharge lithium ion batteries. Keep them between 20 and 80 percent and they will last 10 years and more. Actually, my M10 charger has an indicator when 80% has been reached. Thanks Leica :-)

    • @hendrickziegler8487
      @hendrickziegler8487 Год назад

      @@markymark240682 generally agree... That recalibration really has its use only about once a year and I'd only do it to batteries that aged quite a bit. After discharging the battery completely bring it back up into that 20/80 safe zone :)
