Thank you to everybody for the welcome here on RUclips, especially to those who have subscribed. Also all the video theme suggestions are much appreciated!
Dude these 10 minutes are already more educating than 99% of the videos i've seen the last 6 months. Really thank you for doing this!!! I'm an amateur photographer just starting up the hobby and i really really appreciate your time and work put into this.
Fully agree! I’ve been using the multi-metering mode forever! I’m switching to spot metering on my camera for these situations. Hope to get some nice, contrasty/dramatic images. Strong work on this video! Keep ‘em coming. Thank you for sharing your experience and your knowledge!! 👍🏽📸👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
@@carlosmcse as i said, i'm an amateur hobbyist in photography. I havent taken any lessons and all the overcomplicated technical stuff about metering and a thousand variations can get frustrating to a newbie. Alan's simple and fun approach works for ME personally. I suggest you stop advising ppl what to watch and what not to and let them make their own decisions about what works for them :)
Can't wait for Alan to do a review of what 50mm lens is best for a Leica - I can already tell it will be wayyyy better than some peoples attempts on RUclips 😂
great video. you're gonna kill it mate. also, ive watched over 50 videos on exposure and film and shooting and metering and literally NO ONE has thought to point out literally WHERE on the picture they are metering like you've done @ 04:49 . it's so hugely valuable to see where you put your square so we can learn the relationship between the placement of the meter sensor to get the settings you need to get the picture you want. THANK YOU
I'm starting to explore your videos from the beginning and... WOW! This was an excellent and simple explanation that really puts a photographer's mind in place. "Tools of the trade" that area often (and easily) not taken in consideration while shooting. Terrific! You even laid the foundations of how to go up the ladder to achieve that beautiful negative space/high contrast photos of yours. Thank you for your generosity... and the best good humour 😊
So glad i found your RUclips channel, not only are your videos fun to watch they are also very informative and not too technical which i love ,looking forward to the next video .I have been a street photography for 2 years now and love it.
Sir, your video tutorial has indeed served as a masterful guide in the art of capturing light through the photographic lens. I am most seriously pleased.
This, by far, is the most helpful video I've seen on the understanding of how light works and its relationship to your subject. Huge thank you from an amateur.
Your explanation of spot metering in this video was the best I’ve heard. Immediately made me reach for the camera and crush down the exposure. Many thanks!
It's incredible, I study at an important photography school in Spain and it only took a few minutes to see and understand light in a dynamic and direct way. With clear and concise examples. I am fascinated.
So thankful for your photo work and your work putting this channel together. The information you are delivering is very helpful and extremely fun to watch, thank you!
Thank you for the insight and practical advice. It’s very encouraging to hear (and witness through your hands on demonstrations) that great pictures can be taken under any conditions. You’ve really got me thinking about how to use backlighting. I really enjoy your style and I hope you continue making videos. You seem to be a teacher at heart.
Having followed your work (and amazing podcast!) since I began my own photography journey almost 7 years ago, and now having made it my own career, I am glad you made a youtube channel! A lot of professional photographers who actually make a living from photography don’t take the time (or have it) and don’t have the motivation or teaching skills to share what they learned to other photographers. Regardless of whatever numbers you get on RUclips for the first years, I will happily follow this new journey of yours! You have my full support. Regards, Guillaume
Alan, I’ve been hoping you would start posting videos on RUclips. Thank you so much. Your work is inspiring and thank you for sharing your knowledge with us.
I do my street photography with a NIKON D 750 + 50mm lens or a 70 - 300 mm zoom. And normally I am very opposed to NOT looking through the viewfinder. Masters like HCB only worked this way - simply because there was no monitor then. BUT: the way you do it seems to work just fine! What I sometimes do is to flip my monitor, hold the camera at bellybutton height and shoot "the Vivian Maier way". Works also with a long lens if you can place your camera on a restaurant table for instance. People don't notice anything. And you can "steal" some fine portraits!
For the first time in a long time I didn’t check the time bar to see how much longer I had to endure - entertaining to the end. Looking forward to more.
A superb video! Light! I look at light! We write with light. Use of a lens that I hated, 24mm, gives me, pause fot thought! I hate those camera reviews on RUclips! 'Experts' with handling, fondling! Here, I see images that i find simply lovely. Bravo.
You have a new career as a comedian. Who gives great done to earth advice. I came away with a clear understanding about how to use light and a big smile on my face. Thank you Allan (the lady at the till was great BTW)
Bless you Alan! This has to be the best video on the subject for sure. Many people waffle on about lighting and shadows and flat light and rim light. You explain it AND show examples of it! Thank you so much! 🙏🏾
That was straight to the point advice. Thanks a lot, very helpful. I like that you're seeming to have a lot of fun goofing around. Made the video interesting and entertaining. I'll watch more. Thanks again. 🙂
I've been taking photos for years but I'm always trying to learn something new, recently I switched my camera to only take black and white photos, I was also looking for how to read and understand what I see in the camera and there you go I come across your channel with an amazing pill of knowledge thank you you have a permanent fan in me
10k subscribers in just a couple of days, pretty impressive but not surprising. I have seen you present in other forums before but never realized you had quite a sense of humor. Thanks for all these examples, very helpful. I look forward to seeing more of your vlogs.
Hi Alan. These are the videos I'm looking for. These are videos that I, and with me many others, learn something from. Thank you, friend, for this educational video. Finally, someone who understands. Antoine.
Great content! Really well recorded. I am glad that you share some valuable tips. Tips with exposure 👌🏼 I am already looking for the next one, beautiful pictures 🙌🏼
Thank you so much for this, Alan! It's not easy to be quite serious about honing one's craft, without losing the ability to have fun at the same time and be genuinely relaxed and always ready to learn new things and be surprised every now and then by what the process itself shows and teaches us each time. But you do it so well! I look forward to watching your other videos! All the very best!
I come to photography through painting and what I'm finding that changes is time. Paintings can take a long time but it is a combination of many moments so the time in a picture is evident by the sheer number of brushstrokes. I heard you say you waited for shots and I could sense more time those pictures even though they are an instant. Maybe just me. ( I think Hockney explored it when he composited an array of pictures together introducing a gathering of captured moments together to make more time.) Your work is special because you stay away from cliched images, which is easy to fall into using many of these techniques. Some stealing moments, some knowing exactly what you want, and some not knowing. Manipulating light and the sun is the key to all of it, I think way painting but stupidly hadn't consciously done so in my photography so thank you for this simple, fun and extraordinary look into your thinking process. I learned a lot.
Love the video. Absolutely great content, well explained, but more than anything else, I really enjoyed the humor. 😂 Can't wait for more content! Fantastic stuff, keep going!
Welcome to RUclips Alan and thank you for sharing your knowledge and techniques in a hugely entertaining manner! Look forward to seeing many more videos from you 👍
An effective way to help me improve my "weakest link" in my photography. I've been shooting slow, deliberate, and methodical for decades. Creating an image with a lot of preparation. Street photography is an opportunistic endeavor, that I really need all the help I can get to improve on. Waiting on a shot, is pretty much all I have in the bag at this point.
Hi Alan. I just 'found' you a couple of days ago. Have watched you in Paris and London and more. You have a great style; VERY entertaining AND informative. Thanks very much; I look forward to seeing more. Regards Kevin
I like that this video was made in an infotament style, without resembling a visualized audiobook of a photography textbook. I especially liked the part with rim lightning, when you placed the model in front of shadowed background to create such an amazing shoot. I hope to see more videos like this but I'm also interested in photo critique done by you. Those are not as popular but I do believe they provide an additional insight to what other photographers should do to improve. I would also love to see some Q&A type of content.
Thank you to everybody for the welcome here on RUclips, especially to those who have subscribed. Also all the video theme suggestions are much appreciated!
Editing maybe ?
Composition, exposure and metering, and of course, editing ;) Thanks for sharing your knowledge on RUclips Alan!
More in-depth video about metering please.

One of the most accomplished and known street photographers of our time now on RUclips. Amen
Best new photography RUclips channel.
I feel that it is very important that I tell you, even if this video is 10 months old, how much joy this video is giving me.
This is what I call a real instructional video. This man can make wonderful pictures and is great in telling how to do it. WOW!
This is the best photography video I’ve seen in a while, so entertaining by the way its filmed and also so educational. Im so happy you are on this.

Loved the video, the energy and simplicity of the explanation makes it great to follow and understand. Thank you sir for sharing your knowledge
Cheers for the feedback 🙏🏼😊
Une véritable masterclass, avec humour décontraction et un professionnalisme or norme …. Merci
Love that humoristic approach! Not to dramatic and serious (and pretentious) like all the other (street)photographers!

Ok - this might be my favorite photography channel already...
Hands down, the best video about natural light on this platform. Thanks, Alan! You are an inspiration!
