Alan I’ve been following your work for many years and I wish I could see the real world with the beautiful photogenic sight that you have. Your monochromes are simply amazing.
This set of images and the way the video was shot is very inspirational. As someone that has often gone down the rabbit hole of ‘too much’ gear, I find myself finally letting go of extraneous gear and settling in with the Monochrom and 2 lenses. It is like a deep weight has been lifted off my shoulders.
What a photographer. Some of us really have talent. The others have pleasure to shoot ; which is not bad already. The issue is when you're not aware that you don't have any talent 🙂
Really talented artist and a gorgeous video that compliments well. The Monochrom seems nothing short of marvellous. I also have to say that it is refreshing watching a promo video for a Leica Product where it doesn't feel pretentious or have a product that feels over milked by the photographer just for the sake of promoting a new product. It's a good camera with genuine words and even greater photographs. Well done!
Alan is a master of composition and the high contrast look of his images is achieved mostly in camera by exposure, choice of subject and knowing how the camera sees the light differently than our eyes. I wonder if the monochrome sensor plays a hole here also, giving him more information to play with in post. Shaller's work inspires me greatly. Thank you for showing us more about his mindset as a street photography.
Unfortunately he photograph only in black and white. Think limiting to that kind of genre hold you back to develop new skills. Think there are way better photographers out there but not so well known.
Great video with nice pictures and i totally agree with the liberation of limitation theme. One technical point is the author was using the in camera viewfinder with a 24mm lens even though the camera has no frame lines for that particular lens.
Makes sense. But just some times for me. Then I switch and LOVE the combination of colors... or something nearly monochrome in... blue... the pastels of Saul Leiter for instance. Then again, the B/W photography of a film like THE MAN WHO WAS NOT THERE (DP: Roger Deakins!) then the mad colors of the final sequence of 2001 or APOCALYPSE NOW or a film by Wes Anderson. Brillant pics, Alan, for sure. But I would NEVER give up the opportunity of a RAW pic that let's me decide if I want to keep or lose the color. The picture will tell me, if it is better this or that way.
Well you know, give 100 guys an M10M and none of the pictures probably would turn out like that. Alan has talent and he works hard at his own vision. No amount of money thrown at gear will ever equal that combo: talent and vision trumps all
Alan your my great inspiration and would you like make more video that's make us more encourage.. That's right people buy some much equipments and confuse which one is better to use. would you like make tutorial for black and white editing .
Awesome work - my only issue with the Leica marketing is that I noticed they used all of Alan’s photos for their monochrome campaign. Not every one is going to achieve those kinda of results...it’s such a unique style that I fear you’ll have lots of copy cats.
The main problem now with street photography is a lot of photographers who show there work in galleries sadly use models so it's not real street photography in the historical sense; the reason for this is copyright and lawsuits against the gallery/ photographer. So although the photographer legally owns the image the person within the image they don't and by showing this without their consent can be liable. That's why a lot of galleries reject or get very nervous of street work which is very sad for all of us who like street photography.
Ralph Gibson uses the same approach, i.e, placing limits on himself. Aha, it IS a Leica Monocrom! Well, then, never mind what I said about shooting in B&W! ;)
They are edited. I remember in some other interview he edits his images but he also warns never to over edit in that you can never turn a bad photo in camera to a good one through editing. Think the video is called 7 tips for black and white photography Alan Schaller
I am missing the original Leica Monochrome project where Leica had collaborated with Jacob Aub Sobol; there was a soul in the project (Arrivals and Departures) itself and of course in Sobol's pictures where the observer could take time to enjoy and most importantly feel the atmosphere. However, here, I only see images which are highly post-processed via Photoshop. Half of the images are blacked out. Yes, today's instagram people will love it, but I think people are being amazed by the high contrast characteristics of images but not compositions itself anymore.
delimanyak I totally agree with you. Pictures are too post processed. It would better to be amazed by the compositions rather than to see all the high contrasts.
It is a shame that they use highly processed pictures with no character to identify this camera. Heck, even the pictures are not taken with the M10 monochrome...
You are absolutely correct in your assessment. Sadly, today, with all the terrible images from i-phones and such, there are VERY,very few people who know what a good photograph (in color) looks like. Taken to black and white which an abstraction of and abstraction ( to paraphrase the late Ansel Adams) and the high-contrast is better attitude takes over, I think. The extreme post-processing is too much like spending days in the darkroom and 50 sheets of photographic paper to make one "good" print. Composition and shapes juxtaposed in unusual ways are the greatest strengths of black and white photography. I wonder what Preston Seaton or the late Brett Weston images from the Leica M 10 would look like?
@@Walkercolt1 I couldn't agree more than that. Thanks for your wonderful analysis. Sadly, photography is turning into a "image making" with photoshop and other available software; and sadly people are thinking that it is the true photography. To be honest, no one needs such camera to take images like in this video. even iPhone and a good software can handle that. I also wonder how Preston Seaton or the late Brett Weston images from the Leica M 10 would look like : )
Don't get me wrong, I really like your pix and I think you've got a great eye but limiting yourself to just this format is just that; limiting. Try taking a camera with a prime telephoto too.
Alan Schaller is hands down one of the best photographers of this generation
Tae I’m glad you are enjoying my work 🙏🏼
With all due respect...I would have to say one of the best to ever live!!!
Alan will be remembered as one of the greatest photographers of this current generation
He will be remembered as the photoshop king, he is overrated.
@Enrique I gotta say you're right. Very sterile. But he still does what he does extremely well

@@soundchecked123 Fantastic but now it's in for calibration and check-up. Wanted to make sure it's good to go for the rest of the year.

Respectfully i think Alan Schaller is one of the best photographers ive ever witness. To me he is among my pantheon of photographers.
Alan Schaller creates amazing images, excellent video.
wow, just wow...by far the best 24 mm photographer I have ever seen
Being a huge fan on B&W photography I really like Alan's images and style of shooting.

Should? Photography is subjective and I’m a firm believer in no rules. Make your own art
