People who have been Deaf from a young age often regard it as part of their identity, and there are some very strong feelings about it in the Deaf community. It would be a bit like someone saying to you "I'm sorry you are female / male".

I love these videos. I am self teaching myself to be inclusive in salon for my deaf clients. With covid, lip reading has become very difficult for the deaf community and I really want to do my part to make for a more comfortable experience in salon. These videos are brilliant. I am slowly piecing phrases together to allow for consultation and basic chit chat with my clients who are deaf. I really love it but more importantly so do they ❤️
This is awesome thanks so much, I knew the alphabet and when I was in retail learnt the phrases I most used. Helps so much, its such a shame basic BLS isn't taught in schools or preschools. Then no one would be left behind with communication
Whilst taking care of my (hearing)toddler grandson i realised that signing was a great way for him to tell me what he wanted before he had full command of speech. E.g.. I'm hungry /I'm thirsty/I'm tired.... I was amazed at how relaxed it made him & he could say "I love you" before he could talk. Thankyou for this as I'd like to learn more. The BEST of it was that we learned together, so although I may not have got it perfectly, he understood ! I believe it gave us a real advantage as we could "talk" when others struggled to understand what little ones needed.
When my daughter was little, she was getting frustrated and kept making circles on the palm of her hand with the index finger of the other hand. I realised she wanted to go into the garden and had made up her own sign for it!
Perfect all correct. Very well presented. It ought in schools so children learn sign language to add to writing, reading, listening, speaking all 5 instead of 4 what hearing people do. Deaf people love sign language and don’t understand why hearing people do not use sign language.
I’m learning because we have some deaf ladies who come to my bingo and as the caller it’s great to know some basic signs…..the ones I use the most are ‘hello how are you’, ‘ thank you’ and I also show them the letter F when there is a false call…I think it’s really brave of them to come to the bingo. I guess, I'm not sure if you do it per say however when some people talk they tend to use their hands as well I guess the only difference for you will be that you're actually talking with your hands but in sign language, that's what I do anyway

You are so clear with displaying how to do the signs!! It is actually a relief because I am always puzzling over certain movements that others make when they are attempting to teach it. It makes me feel a bit wary of trying it out in case I haven't understood how it is meant to be. Your way of teaching gives immediate confidence in giving them a go. And you think about what we might actually need to say. It is great!! Thank you so much. Just starting to learn again after years of being despondent. I am not deaf but I think it is a mesmerising and beautiful way of speaking!!

Thank you for doing these videos. I am a hearing person, but a few years ago I lost my speech forever, so I have been following your videos to learn to sign. At 70 yrs old, it takes me time to learn, but getting there slowly, I am also teaching my granchildren as I learn.
I've been subscribed to you for many years and love this channel. I'm a hearing person who has taken a huge interest in BSL and makaton and this channel has been an excellent resource for improving my vocabulary. I'm hoping to complete my BSL level 1 soon but can't seem to sign confidently on camera so wish me luck.

Dan - this is a really good pace and amount of signs for one session. I wish you would do more short themed sessions where a few signs/phrases get actively rehearsed between 2 or 3 people. Much more useful for learning than being shown 100 signs in 10 mins! So glad you are back on RUclips.

Hi Dan! I'm a dog trainer who is (very slowly) learning bsl because everyone should know it. I use signs a lot in my work (as dogs "run on" body language and learn it many times faster then the spoken word). So it would be amazing if I knew the bsl for things we frequently work on- I have found a few things here and there- but not a complete list. Please make a vid so I can learn so we can teach our customers and their dogs ! We'd need: sit, down, stand, leave (ignore thing), stop! walk next to me ( nicely, slowly) faster, slower, wait/ stay. come here, take, find, fetch/ bring, go to bed, walk backwards (get out of the/ harm's way), spin, roll over, paw, crawl, through (my legs lols).... they're the most common- turns out it's a reasonably big list! thank you in advance!
Me and my girlfriend decided we wanted to learn how to sign and we will try and teach our son soon too and these videos are great very clear instructions and i can watch it over and over until i remember thank you

all sign are good to refresh knowledge. Some signs are new to me (eg " I am keeping out of it" " let me know"), are useful as I am involved with " deaf cafe" at the church. now using Zoom meetings. I knew some BSL in my previous work but now stepping up. also it is useful to learn other regional differences. eg numbers I have struggled with. thank for your time and effort it is much appreciated.
I started learning bsl a few years ago. Due to personal reasons I had to drop out of level 2, definitely going to watch more of your videos to help remind me of my lessons and to learn more.
I've been 'learning' sign language for ever..that doesn't mean I know much, or can even sign back, but I've always been fascinated with sign language, and even encouraged/taught my youngest daughter, who asked her teacher if they could learn in school to no avail. I struggle with flexibility in my hands, but I'm going to persevere, even if to be able to understand it.
All of these were useful! Expressions and mouth movements help alongside the words are helpful. 'Again please' was nice to learn! Thank you for doing these!!!

I am trying to teach my greyhound some basic commands in sign language. Makes sense for a sighthound. This is a thing. I’d love to see a video that went through: watch me, sit, down, leave it, close, wait, let’s go. I think I’ve found them but sometimes its less clear out of context. Thank you so much for sharing. I hope it doesn’t offend that I am working with a canine friend rather than a human!
Hey, after having to change careers to make ends meet, I ended up being a key worker through covid. I felt so awful for regular customers who were deaf, they were so isolated 😭 I learned (very basic) BSL and got by. 2 years on, I’m continuing to learn. It’s so important for the minority. And do you know what, the most nicest people! ☀️ I would say though, I’ve struggled to find the sign for “speak slower/sign more slowly” “I don’t understand” & “bear with me, I’m new to this” I feel these are signs everyone could use initially! A huge fan and thanks for your help so far ❤️
Thank you!! This is great! I learnt and used BSL as a child in the 80s. I have used it and practiced since but trying to refresh as a doctor with the masks so I can better support Deaf patients. I missed out on the adult expressions or newer phrases we use more now so this is very useful. Let me know or let you all know especially I loved! I'm also intrigued by the ones related to the internet as obviously it didn't exist LOL so "comments below" also new. And I saw subscribe as a link type sign on another video. Agree with others that phrases are really helpful - more please!! :-)

I dont' know anyone who is deaf, but find SL interesting. I've always wondered if the mouth is part of SL as you see expressions (and what i think are accidental corresponding noises) on telly shows but it never seems to correlate (or be repeated consistently in scripting and i'm too slow to notice) - now i know!

Thanks Dan, I qualified at level 2 in 2016,but if you don't use it you loose it, I'm volunteering with the deaf at stables, so good to be able to communicate, and obviously keep building on it.. 👋
Again please is probably one I’ll use a lot. Been trying to learn more BSL (as it’s different to ASL) since I’ve been teaching around in different countries, and most schools have at least one deaf child, I’ve found.
Thank you for this, it's very helpful. I like the way you break the signs down, most of your signs are very clear. I'm a fast finger speller, but much slower at reading other's finger spelling. Some finger spelling to practice on would be brilliant.
I don't know any deaf people but I just thought it'd be a useful skill to know if I do meet someone who is deaf. Or if me and my friends want to have a conversation without anyone knowing what we are saying. 😂😅

I've been looking for a way to get back into learning BSL since the first lockdown and these are great.
I started learning bsl a few years ago. Due to personal reasons I had to drop out of level 2, definitely going to watch more of your videos to help remind me of my lessons and to learn more.
I've been 'learning' sign language for ever..that doesn't mean I know much, or can even sign back, but I've always been fascinated with sign language, and even encouraged/taught my youngest daughter, who asked her teacher if they could learn in school to no avail. I struggle with flexibility in my hands, but I'm going to persevere, even if to be able to understand it.
Love your videos. A phrase I would find useful is “do you understand?/I understand “

I am trying to teach my greyhound some basic commands in sign language. Makes sense for a sighthound. This is a thing. I’d love to see a video that went through: watch me, sit, down, leave it, close, wait, let’s go. I think I’ve found them but sometimes its less clear out of context. Thank you so much for sharing. I hope it doesn’t offend that I am working with a canine friend rather than a human!
Hey, after having to change careers to make ends meet, I ended up being a key worker through covid. I felt so awful for regular customers who were deaf, they were so isolated 😭 I learned (very basic) BSL and got by. 2 years on, I’m continuing to learn. It’s so important for the minority. And do you know what, the most nicest people! ☀️ I would say though, I’ve struggled to find the sign for “speak slower/sign more slowly” “I don’t understand” & “bear with me, I’m new to this”
I feel these are signs everyone could use initially!

Thank you!! This is great! I learnt and used BSL as a child in the 80s. I have used it and practiced since but trying to refresh as a doctor with the masks so I can better support Deaf patients. I missed out on the adult expressions or newer phrases we use more now so this is very useful. Let me know or let you all know especially I loved! I'm also intrigued by the ones related to the internet as obviously it didn't exist LOL so "comments below" also new. And I saw subscribe as a link type sign on another video. Agree with others that phrases are really helpful - more please!! :-)

I have trouble with my memory and it affects my ability to communicate properly. This one is fantastic for when I suddenly blank on everything and can't even remember how to say it. I'm going to send this video to my whole family so that they know what it means when I use any of these :D xxx
I find your videos really useful, there are regional discrepancies, but the videos are a really useful resource..
As always really helpful. The one I'd probably use the most while learning BSL would be Again Please. :D

I dont' know anyone who is deaf, but find SL interesting. I've always wondered if the mouth is part of SL as you see expressions (and what i think are accidental corresponding noises) on telly shows but it never seems to correlate (or be repeated consistently in scripting and i'm too slow to notice) - now i know!
Very useful other than single word as I have started learning sign language to communicate with my nephew.

Thanks Dan, I qualified at level 2 in 2016,but if you don't use it you loose it, I'm volunteering with the deaf at stables, so good to be able to communicate, and obviously keep building on it.. 👋
Again please is probably one I’ll use a lot. Been trying to learn more BSL (as it’s different to ASL) since I’ve been teaching around in different countries, and most schools have at least one deaf child, I’ve found.

Thank you for this, it's very helpful. I like the way you break the signs down, most of your signs are very clear. I'm a fast finger speller, but much slower at reading other's finger spelling. Some finger spelling to practice on would be brilliant.

I don't know any deaf people but I just thought it'd be a useful skill to know if I do meet someone who is deaf. Or if me and my friends want to have a conversation without anyone knowing what we are saying. 😂😅
All signs are good for me I need to learn some because work is rolling sign language out so we can communicate with the hard of hearing, so thank you
