Yes, here in Finland, melancholy is our middle name. Even when tango spread long ago from Argentina to distant Finland and became popular here, we changed it from major to minor. It suited our soul better.

Even Finnish Christmas songs are pretty melancholic.

This song is one of my favorites from my youth, performed by the singer of the band Yö, Jussi Hakulinen. the swan''s song tells about life and death, and love. The swan is monogamous, therefore its white color represents purity and loyalty if its spouse dies, it will never take another spouse. I myself lost my father exhausted by illness, although years have passed since my father''s death, this song still touches me and brings back many memories of my beloved father. I remember when we picked up my father from the hospital to wait for the burial, there were two swans in the river near the hospital, i told my mother that there will come a day when you can be together like those swans in that river because we have the hope of seeing you again through the merit of Christ

Swan song means a song that, according to belief, a swan sings just before it dies more beautifully than ever.

The writer of this song just passed away. A huge song in Finland, so many of us have grown up with this.
The artist in question is Jussi Hakulinen. Also the vocalist.

    Swan Song
Again you see the children in the yard
underneath your window playing their games
Again you stay there frozen in the window, stay in the window
You fly back to times gone by
Those memories overwhelm you every day
Again they seek for a singer for the swan song, again seek for a singer
When those moments from birth to death are reflected on your eyelids
It makes some people have faith in God, others in Satan, or whoever
    But not to this world
Once upon a time you also found it
    That love of half-a-century
It was easy for you to be happy, to be happy
What will you do with your instincts now
When the birds have flown from their nest
Only yellowed photos remain, you browse through them again, and yet again
You may not yearn for my pity, it won't numb the pain
That pain writes this song, that pain catches up to anyone
    That pain catches up
I see your veil of sorrow, five years ago you let it breathe
The swan song made you cry back then, it made you cry
You'd like to be as you were back then, when you were veiled in white
It has already been trampled by time, just like you
    (solo)
I would like to try and hope to stay above the water's surface
When I see the river overflow its brims, when I see the river overflow
Those women in markets with their carts and the men in their regular bars
Maybe dream of the fountain of youth, and the pain subsides, or whatever
Again a moment closer to death, the pain never evaporates
That pain writes this song, that pain catches up
Anyone, that pain catches up to anyone it wants

This song doesn't translate easy. I tried a paragraph too.
You might not care for my pity - Et ehkä sääliäni kaipaa,
it doesn't dull the pain. - ei se saa tuskaa puutumaan.
That pain writes this song, - Tuo tuska laulun tämän kirjoittaa,
that pain catches up whom ever. - Tuo tuska kiinni saa kenet vaan

Yeah Joutsen is a swan tho someone probably already told this. Joutsenlaulu means swan song, and the song leans on an ancient concept of a belief in which the swan only sings once during it's life time, just before it's death. The song is written much like a person looking on his past life, now at it's end. It's an unbeliavably sad and beautiful piece of finnish pop/rock history. Some of the lyrics are actually quite smart, I'm no good on translations so I won't butcher it here, you can find good english translations usually easily on finnish songs tho. Finns love sharing their culture and Finns also speak english well so people are delighted to translate these to foreigners. It's always funny how finns deviate towards these videos on YT, me included, but I guess it's just that we are so proud of our cultural products, music especially since we are kind of good at it (unlike movies.)

Yeah this is the version for me. I recall my kid sister used to play Yö, so I heard it much more than a person who just listens radio.
They were quite a popular band. Anyone who has lived and listened radio in Finland, recognizes songs from Yö... they have always been played.
You got it, laulu = song, yö = night.

Joutsenlaulu = Swan song. Jussi Hakulinen (charter member of the band) wrote this song about 35 years ago. Yö (Night) is very famous band in Finland, but the leader of the band Olli Lindholm died in February so I guess Yö is about to end their career.

You should react to ones with english lyrics, if its possible to find those. Would open up a lot more context about these songs. This song is extremely emotional, and one of most classic finish songs there are. Knowing the meaning behind it all would give you a whole new perspective about it.

Thanks for doing this! I prefer this original version over the cover of For My Pain (especially due to the nostalgia it delivers). The lyrics in the song are pretty touching and profound. Definitely something to have a deeper look, althought some parts of the lyrics are bit hard to be translated accurately in english.
BTW, you pretty nicely catch some of the song's main message by wondering in the video that it is about "...thinking about your life, and what have you accomplished or what not..." That's pretty near what the song is about lyrics level! For instance the following free translation on the lyrics "You flight back to the decades...", "When those moments from birth to the death reflect to eyelids...", etc.

Hello!! I was actually thinking of suggesting this band to you in february when Olli Lindholm (the singer of this band and also one of the founder members) passed away suddenly only at the age of 54!! Here in Finland was a "Voice of Finland"-contest going on and he was one of the coaches and they had filmed all the not-live episodes already before he died and it was quite emotional to watch him in the show for many weeks after that and even more emotional once the live shows began with a great tribute with other coaches and he just wasn't there anymore!! He was such a cool guy and actually one of my favourite persons in the show even his music isn't SO close to my heart!! (btw☝️, member from his team won the contest in the end for the first time👍)
Yö is one of the most popular........ Or I guess, I have to say WAS one of the most popular Finnish-Rock bands here!! They were founded in 1981 but I guess their story has now come to an end because what happened but they are still planning couple of memory concerts with the person who was singing in this song..(the former singer-keyboar player and the main songwriter Jussi Hakulinen who left the band already in 1985 but who has done some co-operatio with them once in a while after 1990 and he have also composed many of their hit-songs in the 2000s)
I actually do listen "Yö" once in a while... Perhaps like once or twice a year!! Somrtimes their style just fits the mood I have and I did listen ALOT of them in february!! That's no surprise!!
This song is propably their most famous song but it has never been such a big song to me!! Okay maybe never is a wrong word because I liked this when I was younger when I didn't listen so much of rock music but this is SO popular that I have bored to this like 20years ago already!! And to me Jussi's voice isn't so special and I like Yö's songs more with Olli (which I think was one of the most underrated singers in Finland... perhaps he wasn't such a great singer but) to me his voice just suits their music perfectly!!
Btw☝️.. the song I planned many times to suggest to you was "Rakkaus on lumivalkoinen" which is such a beautiful song, especially when you understand the lyrics🤘...
    ruclips.net/video/L8Om_lcFRlk/видео.html
Hopefully you'll check that song out too!!
You got the lyrics already so only thing that I have left to say is:
    Thanks, catch you later👍

    Joutsenlaulu
    Taas lapset pihalla nään
    Ikkunas alla leikkivän leikkejään
    Taas siihen paikallesi ikkunaan jäät
    Siihen ikkunaan jäät
    Lennät vuosien taa
Ne muistot päivittäin sut valtaansa saa
    Ne Joutsenlauluun etsii taas laulajaa
    Etsii taas laulajaa
    Nuo hetket syntymästä kuolemaan
    Kun silmäluomiin heijastuu
    Saa toiset uskomaan kai Jumalaan
    Toiset Saatanaan, tai mihin vaan
    Muttei kuitenkaan tähän maailmaan
    Sä kerran löysit myös sen
    Tuon puolen vuosisadan rakkauden
    Sun oli helppo olla onnellinen
    Olla onnellinen
    Nyt mitä vaistoillas teet
Kun linnut pesästään on pois lentäneet
    On enää valokuvat kellastuneet
Ne selaat taas uudelleen ja taas uudelleen
    Et ehkä sääliäni kaipaa
    Ei se saa tuskaa puutumaan
    Tuo tuska laulun tämän kirjoittaa
Tuo tuska kiinni saa kenet vaan
    Tuo tuska…

The most overplayed song ever in Finland. Can't remember if you said you know Tuomas Holopainen's side project band For My Pain? Anyways on their album (bonus track) there's a metal cover of this song. It's much better.
