Hi was wondering if you had any insight on a problem I have. I had to change the carburetor because the mower would only work on choke and would die on HI or LO positions. I didn't change anything else. When I pull the lever out of choke down to the Hi position the rpm is pretty much the same but when I put it on the LO position there is no change in engine speed which seems to be ok for the Hi position. The motor is GVX120 4.4HP 1 cylinder. The governor arm is free to move if I push on it revs faster. There are no restrictions either on the idle arm where the 2 governor rods attach on the carb. Any Idea?
@@JazzyScat Try removing the cable that attaches to the carburetor that goes to the lever for your choke and engine speed. Then with that off try manually at the carburetor turning down your engine speed. You also may need to unscrew the throttle position screw on the new carburetor. You will see a little screw that pushes against the paddle flap thing on the carburetor making it stay open too far. Try the screw first if not that then remove that cable and do it manually if that works then your throttle cable needs to be adjusted.

Noticed that you didn't go through the agony of removing replacing the sealant from the valve cover ... my least favorite repair job. Glad to see that it's not leaking. I've had the same problems when have bought me a push mower they've worked on . My philosophy is if you don't know how to work on it leave it alone , That's just my philosophy , One can do more harm than good working on some thing not knowing what your doing . My old Honda engine has the manual choke lever , not fond of those Automatic chokes . Those Honda gaskets have too be just in line , I've had people bring them too me they've done everything right and leave it with me and I'd just put them in line and it would run just fine .
Thanks Bruce great video I have the same issue with a Toro Kohler engine that is running at full throttle I think its the same issue you had with that mower. I will try it in the morning I hope that's my issue...
I've come around to these Honda automatic chokes. Mine's in season #6 without a hint of trouble -- one pull & go. If/when it needs a new wax hoozits, it gets one. Sad to see a Honda that doesn't run right for dumb reasons, though. Aerosol gasket remover makes it easy to clean the old rocker cover. As for the owner tinkering with his machine -- that's pretty much how we all learned this stuff back when, wasn't it? Lotta years ago! Lawnmowers , bicycles and newspapers -- the three staples of an industrious childhood!
Did u actually show the procedure for adjusting the governor? If u did, I didnt see it. Loosen bolt hold shaft and turn governor arm clockwise or counter-clockwise..I didn't see any of that..
Is it Dr. Pender these days? You need to wear a white lab jacket. In Statistical Studies it's called the "Cause and the Effects", and you went through all the causes (multiple variables) for this mower to make a great learning video for us. Good job friend, and again fun to watch. Thanks!
Excuse me asking but why was the dinged valve cover a problem? It seemed you just fixed the front with the "OHC" (or "Honda") on it. As long as the sides are not bent there should be no problem with engine running. Even if the sides are bent it "only" will leak oil but won't affect the engine running smooth.
Ah, I think I got it now: the bump in that cover was rather deep so it might touch one or both of the rocker arms, preventing the valves from closing properly.
How's she goin'? The valve cover must have been keeping one of the valves from closing completely eh. Nice find on that one. Governors can really cause issues to get them set up correctly, or I find they do. That was good tip you gave for how to get them set correctly. Thanks for that!! Take care!!
Every being behind the air filter cover is not "neat" (=clever). It's a stupid pain, as are the bolts instead of studs. When I dismantled mine one of thegaskets had slipped, closing the throat somewhat and preventing the choke butterfly from opening fully.
Hello Bruce. It is frustrating when someone had their fingers in it before you. On one hand you want to give them props for trying but then you want to scream when you find out what they have done. My son bought a mower and wanted me to fix it. It was really butchered and I was getting verbal about people trying to fix things that they can't. So my son says they are just trying to make it work and I said I understand that but my problem is then some poor shlub like me has to deal with what the previous owner has done which sometimes can be irritating. Anyway nice detective work my friend
Hey Bruce at what point can I say the governor is broken? I am working on a HRX217 with gcv190 engine and I have adjuste the governor, springs are all in place, and I cant get it to run at a slower rpm unless I control the linkage by hand. Is the governor broke?
Before adjusting the governor make sure the carb is totally clean. There is a spring on the throttle back to the governor you can tighten that up first. Adjusting the governor coming out of the engineis the last thing to do, Good luck
OK, here's my problem, Bruce or someone maybe you have a suggestion. I have a craftsman 6.75 walk behind mower. IT won't start unless I spray carb cleaner into carb. The recommended RPM for my Honda mower is 3000 which seems slow. Any idea Why it is so low compared to Briggs and Stratton and others that are normally set to 3600 RPM?
@@berardia4 Right. They sometimes mention in the manuals that there is maximum power at 3600 which messes folks up. I set them at 3000 now. My new tach helps a lot.
morning Bruce, great fix as always. I have came across an auto-choke that Honda uses, it's a strange little plunger in behind the carb that has wax in it that melts and hardens to control the choke, kinda baffled me for a while haha. take care
If you go over to Donyboy 73's channel a while back he showed how to replace that wax plunger and gave the part number for it. When looking for Honda carb parts, all the diagrams show it but no part number. Haven't looked at Honda's actual site. But all the parts houses don't show it. Good repair Inspector.

Bruce Pender you can get a honda 216 with the throttle and that runs the choke my honda goes through tall grass like a hot nife through butter its a tough mower i mean for 535 and i got it at a honda dealer not from home depot
I bent my governor arm to bring up RPMS a little. Decided to bring it back down till i got a tac. Bought tac, then bent arm back again. Now my honda HRX surges at idle. Runs fine with blades engaged. Do i need to get a new governor arm, and then reset the governor? Or...what should i do?
No Surging is never a governor issue. Bringing up the RPM by adjusting the governor just masks the fact you have a dirty carb or one that needs a jet opening of only the smallest amount. If you are not comfortable about doing the jetting and it is only surging a bit at idle I would leave it.
@@BrucesShop even though it runs fine with the blades engaged? i seen a video of an updated governor spring that attaches to the throttle. has less coils...thinkiing its strong. i put my finger on the governor arm at idle and it actually settled itself out...no more surging at idle
bruce, in governor arm there are 2 hole for governer spring, i have HRX217 with blade cotrol and clutch. if the spring is in slot or hole 1, when i depress the blade control it switch off, if i put it governor spring on hole 2 of governor arm, i dont see the problem. so question is is it ok to use second hole in governor spring, lawn mover is not overreving, may be 100 to 150 rpm more.. so pls advise.
Hello sir i am having an issue where i have cleaned the carb jet and such. what screw did you remove to clean the fuel path further? When i start my mower it just putts and then dies after a short time.
There is a brass jet inside the carb tube or tunnel. Use a straight shank screw driver to remove it. Clean the inside of that and the emulsion tube behind it. Google everything you can think of that helps. Do not play with the governor.
Hi Bruce I wish mower owner's would try not to fix things more work for you. Had a friend ask if I could fix his chainsaw gave me two boxes of parts said he try to fix it 8 hours later its back together and running problem was it needed a new spark plug that's all.
Running at full tilt? Bruce I like your video for the fact that I learn something everytime, but running at full tilt, can you inform me, what's the meaning.
Hi Bruce, another great video! both my Honda snowblower and mower run way too fast when they are started with full choke, how do you fix that? also, what does that spring loaded phillips screw do exactly, I can’t even find information in the shop manuals. Thanks for helping from Ontario!
Sorry Sir , but I think that you are wrong about a Dingeroo not existing , because it exists in Australia , and is related to it’s cousin a Bangeroo , and they can be found happily living in sheds all over Australia LOL 😂.I think in your hands this quality Honda would last 20 years plus. Great job Sir 👍 Tam.
Yea I just cut two slits on top and fold the top back until im done watching choke function etc. Afterward just fold it back down and cover slits with electrical tape.
Governors are rarely the problem. I remember monkeying with the governor on my 15 up Kawasaki in the past when I didn't know what I was doing. It wasn't the problem.
If you're going to buy a Honda lawnmower, spend the extra to get the plastic deck. You can see this one is rusting. My previous Honda completely rusted out the steel deck in 10 years - everything else worked fine. Replaced it with a Honda with a plastic deck.
This one isn't mine. A don't buy lawn mowers. Folks give them to me as they don't run. My current one is a Honda 160 gcv made by MTD. It would not stay running and the owner gave it to me.
I don't have much bad language on the channel. I know it slips in. It doesn't mean I don't swear but i keep it to a minimum. BTW a Honda may survive 8000 RPM's

I think at that point i was still in the frustration stage and just tightened it up .
You are so right. Thanks
These Honda's were legendary, unfortunately Honda has jumped on the crap wagon with every other manufacturer.
Yes I agree
Thanks Bruce great video I have the same issue with a Toro Kohler engine that is running at full throttle I think its the same issue you had with that mower. I will try it in the morning I hope that's my issue...
Best of luck
I've come around to these Honda automatic chokes. Mine's in season #6 without a hint of trouble -- one pull & go. If/when it needs a new wax hoozits, it gets one. Sad to see a Honda that doesn't run right for dumb reasons, though. Aerosol gasket remover makes it easy to clean the old rocker cover. As for the owner tinkering with his machine -- that's pretty much how we all learned this stuff back when, wasn't it? Lotta years ago! Lawnmowers , bicycles and newspapers -- the three staples of an industrious childhood!
You are right
Did u actually show the procedure for adjusting the governor? If u did, I didnt see it. Loosen bolt hold shaft and turn governor arm clockwise or counter-clockwise..I didn't see any of that..
One side or the other depending on the make You can try both. This is an older video Thanks
Great video Bruce
Thanks a lot.
Is it Dr. Pender these days? You need to wear a white lab jacket. In Statistical Studies it's called the "Cause and the Effects", and you went through all the causes (multiple variables) for this mower to make a great learning video for us. Good job friend, and again fun to watch. Thanks!
For a newer mower the owner did attach all the vulnerable spots.
Absolutely 💯 beautiful
Thank you
Excuse me asking but why was the dinged valve cover a problem? It seemed you just fixed the front with the "OHC" (or "Honda") on it. As long as the sides are not bent there should be no problem with engine running. Even if the sides are bent it "only" will leak oil but won't affect the engine running smooth.
Ah, I think I got it now: the bump in that cover was rather deep so it might touch one or both of the rocker arms, preventing the valves from closing properly.
You got it.
This is the best blind video I ever have seen. Keep your back to the camera, do all work off camera. Let the viewer imagine whats happening.
I understand
How's she goin'? The valve cover must have been keeping one of the valves from closing completely eh. Nice find on that one. Governors can really cause issues to get them set up correctly, or I find they do. That was good tip you gave for how to get them set correctly. Thanks for that!! Take care!!
thanks so much once again.
I can see your eating well, LOL great video as always
well I am 64
@@BrucesShop just messing with you anyway, keep up the good work
Every being behind the air filter cover is not "neat" (=clever). It's a stupid pain, as are the bolts instead of studs. When I dismantled mine one of thegaskets had slipped, closing the throat somewhat and preventing the choke butterfly from opening fully.
I wished i could change it. Are you complaining?
Hello Bruce. It is frustrating when someone had their fingers in it before you. On one hand you want to give them props for trying but then you want to scream when you find out what they have done. My son bought a mower and wanted me to fix it. It was really butchered and I was getting verbal about people trying to fix things that they can't. So my son says they are just trying to make it work and I said I understand that but my problem is then some poor shlub like me has to deal with what the previous owner has done which sometimes can be irritating. Anyway nice detective work my friend
Thanks Dave. I will email you with the final thing
Did a good job Bruce 👏
Thanks Steve
Hey Bruce at what point can I say the governor is broken? I am working on a HRX217 with gcv190 engine and I have adjuste the governor, springs are all in place, and I cant get it to run at a slower rpm unless I control the linkage by hand. Is the governor broke?
The governor arm may be loose. There are a lot of videos on that.
I just got this exact Mower yesterday for free the main jet was plugged fixed that, but it's not very strong as far as cutting and advise?
Before adjusting the governor make sure the carb is totally clean. There is a spring on the throttle back to the governor you can tighten that up first. Adjusting the governor coming out of the engineis the last thing to do, Good luck
OK, here's my problem, Bruce or someone maybe you have a suggestion. I have a craftsman 6.75 walk behind mower. IT won't start unless I spray carb cleaner into carb. I have rebuilt the carb , I have removed it 5 times now and thoroughly cleaned it. Reemed all orifices, still I am getting No spray out the emulsion tube into the carb. Yes I cleaned the float bowl screw/jet 6 times. I press the primer bulb and nothing! Now I put a compressor hose to it and it sprays. The primer bulb is NEW. Please help. Thanks. Bruce, I love your channel.
You may need a primer seal. Sometimes you need 2 if the plastic air filter housing is warped. Here are a couple of options One is OEM expensive. This is Canada Amazon By the way.

Nice repair (repairs)! To me it sounds like maybe it’s running just a wee bit too fast but it’s hard to tell through the computer speakers.
It is I have a tach
The recommended RPM for my Honda mower is 3000 which seems slow. Any idea Why it is so low compared to Briggs and Stratton and others that are normally set to 3600 RPM?
OHV engines run at lower rpm's to create the same hp as flat head engines.
@@berardia4 Right. They sometimes mention in the manuals that there is maximum power at 3600 which messes folks up. I set them at 3000 now. My new tach helps a lot.
Why not fit afuel filter in the fuel line? I did !
That is a good idea. My own has one.
morning Bruce, great fix as always. I have came across an auto-choke that Honda uses, it's a strange little plunger in behind the carb that has wax in it that melts and hardens to control the choke, kinda baffled me for a while haha. take care
Me too I came across my first one about 4 years ago. Crazy set up.
Iit would help if we could have been shown the things you were doing along with an explanation.
Yes it is tough to film. I just try to show what I do. Thanks for watching Susan. I am not Steven Spielberg. I am an old guy in a garage with a camera. no one else is there.
Take bolt out and saw between the two sides works😊
Good idea
Hi Bruce, what is the lift platform you are using and its capacity? Who is the manufacturer? Thanks.
Well I bought it at a Canadian Store called Princess Auto. It is like Harbor Freight. Here is an older video of it.
ruclips.net/video/yv7FtFWRHaU/видео.html
@@BrucesShop Thank you sir.
I have the same engine and it has a low idol sounding almost like a hit and miss engine. When I push the governor all the way it wants to go dead, any Ideas? Thanks
Well I am not there but I would start with a carb clean (interior)
Bruce Pender you can get a honda 216 with the throttle and that runs the choke my honda goes through tall grass like a hot nife through butter its a tough mower i mean for 535 and i got it at a honda dealer not from home depot
In Canada??
Thanks again for the informative videos
I saw you were on the Micks Live-stream last Saturday Correct??
Where did you get the mower lift table? I could use one.
Well, it was a gift from my wife . Here is the older video.
Thanks

@@BrucesShop thank you for your response
bruce, in governor arm there are 2 hole for governer spring, i have HRX217 with blade cotrol and clutch. if the spring is in slot or hole 1, when i depress the blade control it switch off, if i put it governor spring on hole 2 of governor arm, i dont see the problem. so question is is it ok to use second hole in governor spring, lawn mover is not overreving, may be 100 to 150 rpm more.. so pls advise.
Sorry I am not there to help you. Try it.
Looks like you have some snow coming your way
Yes 3 - 6 inches. Thanks for keeping track.
@@BrucesShop thanks for the reply.
1 quick question sir can i clean my mower with water
Yes you can. I use a soapy solution as well.. Let it dry mostly before you start it up.
Hi Bruce I wish mower owner's would try not to fix things more work for you. Had a friend ask if I could fix his chainsaw gave me two boxes of parts said he try to fix it 8 hours later its back together and running problem was it needed a new spark plug that's all.
Too funny. All that work and you need to go out for a spark plug. Wow good for you.
Just wondering where did you get that lawnmower lift from
This explains it all. Check the comments
ruclips.net/video/yv7FtFWRHaU/видео.html
Cross threaded the bottom left valve cover bolt.. should always start fasteners by hand not rattle guns
Thanks
Running at full tilt? Bruce I like your video for the fact that I learn something everytime, but running at full tilt, can you inform me, what's the meaning.
Running at full tilt is slang and means that I am very busy.
@@BrucesShop What? Are you joshy me?
Small bead of the right stuff on valve cover rim and never have a leak.
god idea
Be nice if you showed exactly how you adjust the governor.
At 10:20 I show how it is done.
Hi Bruce, another great video! both my Honda snowblower and mower run way too fast when they are started with full choke, how do you fix that? also, what does that spring loaded phillips screw do exactly, I can’t even find information in the shop manuals. Thanks for helping from Ontario!
You can loosen the governor arm tension. Don loosen any bolts. Just bend it so it has less tension on the spring.
Thanks You had me going for a second there. Just a second LOL.
@@BrucesShop Your sense of humour married to your easygoing presentation is a winner Sir 👍 Tam.
I hate working on that particular honda engine. But hey, at least the issues can be solved and we can get paid 😃
OMG Me getting paid for this one would be worth another video but i can't. I will not say anymore.
Would have loved to have seen some details on the carburetor cleaning but you did not show anything that a person could follow.
Sorry about that
What is the brand and model number of the yellow lift you have? I want one too!
This is when I got the lift
look at the comments too

Great job sir
Where do I get that cart at? Lol
Princess Auto in Canada and Harbor Freidht in the U S
Next time on something like the arm take the bolt out clamp the arm in the vice take a hack saw and cut down the middle to create a gap.
Thanks
I hate when I get a dinger-do!
The snow’s gonna be flying soon up there.
Meanwhile in S Fla, we’re having a cool front, now it’s down to 84😀
OK. As well we won't be going to Mexico until we are clear. Here and there. Health insurance is the key.
So where was the governor adj . I must be missing something , but it won't be the first time .
It starts a 10:20
It looks at that point like you are delving into the "wonderful world" of body work.
LOL I get that
Q-tip is a nice trick.
Thanks
Happy Thanksgiving day Bruce and Trudy. Did you celebrate yesterday or today? Good job on the Honda. CU on the next movie.
We celebrated on Sunday. Me and 5 ladies. LOL My Wife and 4 nieces. One of the nieces is not quite 3 months old.
How much can someone get for a craftsman riding tractor DLS 3500
Sorry I don't think I can help you. I am in Canada and a different area for sure.
I don't know what you mean by an unqualified owner. As a graduate engineer I have a good understanding of mechanical things
I was just frustrated by the way it was treated forgive me.
Graduate engineer explains it al LOL!
Should have checked the valve clearance!
You are right
Customer states, he repaired carb, now carb leaking! Ha ha ha
I know.
cut the section blocking the carb nice and clean, customer will never know.
put a tach on it and set engine speed.
Sorry no. I show it all. Thanks for the reply though.
@@BrucesShop i meant cut the plastic filter housing to access the adjustments.
Yes I leave them alone until there are no more options. You just don't know what the customer does.
This governor arm was loose on the output shaft.
That Carb, is not a typical Honda Carb. For me I don't think its a Honda Carb at all!
It is the new one. This whole Honda is a new style. Sold in Canada
Showing the work in frame is more useful
Noted
If you're going to buy a Honda lawnmower, spend the extra to get the plastic deck. You can see this one is rusting. My previous Honda completely rusted out the steel deck in 10 years - everything else worked fine. Replaced it with a Honda with a plastic deck.
This one isn't mine. A don't buy lawn mowers. Folks give them to me as they don't run. My current one is a Honda 160 gcv made by MTD. It would not stay running and the owner gave it to me.
I think this guy is related to Red Green
Keep your stick on the ice
Cotton inside a carburetor? What?
I went back. May be poplar fluff.
I have the same mower and it has not ran right (pun intended) since Gretchen Whitmer was elected Governor!
I don't talk politics
I find it hard to believe that one of those types of engiines could rev up to 8000rpm, before it would shit-the-bed.
I don't have much bad language on the channel. I know it slips in. It doesn't mean I don't swear but i keep it to a minimum. BTW a Honda may survive 8000 RPM's
@@BrucesShop I think you would have "valve float" long before you reach 8000 rpm.
That's a "chingadera" in Texas.
LOL
This mower is hereby nicknamed 'The Governor'
