On the machines' use of humans as an energy source making no sense: my understanding is that the Wachowskis' original script gave a different reason for the creation of The Matrix: the machines are using humans' brains for processing power as part of a distributed network. While the conscious part of your mind is doing whatever in the Matrix, another part of your brain is being used as part of a supercomputer, basically. This makes more sense because it not only does it not contradict the laws of thermodynamics, it explains why the machines need humans specifically (most complex brains in the animal kingdom) and why we need to be conscious--our brains need to be active to be useful for the machines. But the producers felt general audiences wouldn't understand a complicated plot involving parallel processing and got the Wachowskis to change the machines' motivation to something Laurence Fishburne could explain by holding a simple household object, a Duracell battery, up between two fingers.
It still doesn't really make a lot of sense to use a brain as a processor. It's fairly unreliable for anything other than what it's been naturally selected for.
@@FortoFight i want to believe
I always just took it as the machines subjugating humanity but not really wanting to wipe out their creators, so they came up with some vague excuse to keep us alive.
@@Arkantos117 That was my idea. They accepted an inefficient system as a sort of mercy to us. But that's just head canon.
Pretty obvious theme throughout the films (to me at least) is the control and subjugation of humanity. Th reasoning in the machine's mind being "You made us as slave so now we will do the same to you".
0/10 podcast, did not start with the Eric Andre Morpheus song.

I had a dream Adum sang the Neon Genesis Evangelion theme song but in English, and in his usual cringey way of tying it in with Sardonicast and woke up because it felt all too real.

Besides the first Matrix, I always found "The Second Renaissance" parts 1 and 2 of the Animatrix to be the most memorable and compelling part of the universe. Great story, art direction, tone, music, etc. It has really stuck with me over the years,
Despite being a mixed bag, I prefer the Animatrix to the first movie. I think it presents more fascinating explorations for some the ideas/stories (you already mentioned the 2nd renaissance) that were done in the first one. A shame they didn't make at least one more anthology film for this universe.
@@thirtyyearoldmulberryfield I think I agree to some extent, it had a lot more time to explore various aspects of the universe and the thematic throughlines in them. I also particularly enjoy how unflinching and grim the tone is for a lot of them.
I agree, especially the extent of how innocent the robots are at first, but our actions cause them to become what they are. Then just how disturbing them "figuring us out" was to watch.
I love it when the robot diplomats to the UN in their formal human style costumes get murdered, like they were trying so hard to be friends.
I personally hate the Razzies for the fact that they nominated Stanley Kubrick for worst director for The Shining. They also nominated Shelly Duval for worst actress for the same movie.
I mean I personally didn’t like Shelly Duval in that movie (didn’t deserve a razzie tho)
@Joel Woods
Really a lot of people thought the Shining was a big failure when the movie came out. A lot of people watching this at the theater laughed a lot during the movie, for the wrong reasons. Etc.
@@mabusestestament Wasn't it also kinda seen as Kubrick selling out by adapting a Stephen King book? Even today most people think the movie is boring and goofy.
Even if you don’t like a certain movie or someone’s performance in that movie, it’s undeniable that both Kubrick and Duval gave their all for that movie and stepped outside of their comfort zone. I believe such awards for worst actor or director should be given to phoned in or lazy performances, rather than ones with effort put into them.
@Joel Woods
I agree about Shelly Duval, but I don't see how Kubrick supposedly stepped out of his comfort zone with The Shining.
The original script for the Matrix had humans used as co-processors rather than as a power source but the studio thought audiences wouldn't accept that concept so they changed it.
it actually makes more sense they'd use brains as processors
My favorite effect from any movie would have to be Davy Jones and his crew from Pirates of the Caribbean 2 & 3. Despite being 13 years old, the motion capture and CGI still looks perfect. Not to mention the fact that every member of the crew has their own different and unique design.
Klaus and Invader Zim: Enter the Florpus were good animated movies, that were on Netflix
An animated feature from this year that was great in my opinion of I Lost My Body on Netflix. Really interesting, fairly dark French animated featured.
The first Matrix was really good but the 2nd and 3rd feels like a dream looking back at them.
Nick is Dank You went to far down the rabbit hole, Alice
Isn't that kind of fitting, given the setting?
Ralph, the reason Skynet doesn't go back even further in time and prevent the human species from existing is that that would prevent IT from existing as well. It doesn't want to disrupt the sequence of events that led to its own creation; that's what the heroes try to do in T2.
Kenneth Connally why wouldn’t it send a machine into the past, or several machines, and invent itself before humans evolved into existence.

Let me just start out saying that I love this podcast and I listen to every episode.
Last night I was listen to this episode as I was falling asleep and I think I must of dreamt or imagined something rather odd. (After revisiting the episode in the morning I realized it was all a dream)
so I thought the 3 of you all broke out into song. I cant remember all the lyrics, but Ralph was singing about how sardonicasts center was love and that he found Adam and Alex very attractive.
And Alex chimed in with a verse about being yourself, letting your guard down and having a good time.
And then Adam comes in all tender and sings about how sardonicast is his new family and that the audience is a part of that family.
There was a animation to go along with the song and everything.
It was a very vivid experience.
I hope people notice my comment becuz this is too funny to go to waste
Wtf this is amazing
what really blew my mind was when i realized "Cypther" was one of the Fertelli brothers in the movie "Goonies"
i was like Neo... "whoa"
I used to think "yeah the acting in the Matrix is stiff" but then i thought "they were created by machines. Also there is no sunlight so there is no serotonin in their brains. Makes sense."
1997residente That was some pretty bad endocrinology right there.
Excuses excuses
Hmm, interesting
apparently they directed the actors to be deliberately stiff in certain scenes, so they may have actually gone for that
You guys should consider going over the Back to the Future trilogy. Personally that's my favorite trilogy, and I think it would be interesting to hear your thoughts on those movies.
Adam would spent 25 minutes talking about how the time travel doesn't make sense. And I'd happily listen to it!
I adore Buffalo ‘66, can’t wait for the next episode
Canadian Preds Fan it’s a masterpiece
I feel silly because I haven’t seen it and I actually live in Buffalo
World On A Wire is about someone finding out they live in a simulation.
Amazing 70s film by Fassbinder that obviously inspired Blade Runner, The Matrix etc.
Awesome recommendation, love looking into some of these less discussed, older sci-fi films like this and "Alphaville".
Man, no one has seen this, haha. I saw it at TIFF in its entirety. Was so wild.
I would have absolutely loved to watch a 3 hour video of Adum watching the new Lion King just angrily typing away, grumbling to himself.
Prescient.
I believe the genre of music Adam was trying to describe in the first movie is triphop (like Portishead, Gorillaz, Massive Attack), which was very popular at the time
THE BOIS ARE BACK IN TOWN 3: AM I REALLY DOING THIS AGAIN RELOADED
I just love when Adam talks about the stuff he loves. Great episode, really nice how everyone had different levels of engagement with the material and it came through in the discussion.
I think the themes and ideas are deeper in the sequels but the execution is the best in the 1st.
When I read Neuromancer, I was shocked by how much of it was in The Matrix, to the degree that I don't think there could ever be a Neuromancer adaptation- it would be a cross between Blade Runner 2049 and The Matrix.
The Neuromancer- a human AI hybrid, which is essentially Ghost In The Shell's Motoko/Puppetmaster hybrid aside, The Matrix took the concept of code running down the screen and a Matrix from the novel, as well as much of the fashion, setting and martial arts references (shurikens, ninjas etc). It was quite surreal. It was like reading a novelisation of The Matrix
Ricky Gervais is hosting the Golden Globes again this year. I’m pretty hyped

Out of all the reviews of Reloaded I've seen, no one mentions how padded and overlong the story is. Remember that terrible trend of Part 1/Part 2 book adaptations where there wasn't enough material to draw from so they invented material or drew it out? The Matrix Reloaded has this problem big time. Every action scene goes on longer than needed and plenty of other scenes feel very drawn out. It's like a feature length prologue to Revolutions.
there is a cut out there that's combining 2 and 3 and taking away the zion scenes.
You could cut out the first 40 minutes and lose basically nothing
@@movieace1295 I'd rather see a fan edit that cuts the two films into one film. I feel like this story either needed to be trimmed down or maybe just told better. But as it stands, the two part format is not done well.
@@movieace1295 That's missing the point. The movies are overlong in all aspects. A version that just Matrix scenes is still a shitty movie. The only difference is that now its shittier because the plot could not possibly make any kind of sense and its gonna jump around real jarringly.
Really you just needed to cut down every single dialogue and action scene by half you could get a reasonable 2 and a half hour sequel to the Matrix.
@@rsfilmdiscussionchannel4168 Yes and THAT exists.
I actually watched the first Matrix a couple nights ago, completely forgetting that it was a Sardonicast recommendation
On The Matrix's idea of a computer-generated fake world being confused for reality being the first time anyone had ever done that: Dark City came out the year before and has essentially the same reveal. It also has a similar neo-noir aesthetic.
The matrix has actually recicled shots from dark city
@VJ Goofy
No it doesn't 🙂
@Kenneth Connally
Dark City does not have a computer generated fake world. So no 🙂
@@mabusestestament sure, in both movies the protagonist discover that he lives in a fake world, but one is being in a computer makes all the difference? No. It's like you say to me a green apple it's not the same fruit as a red apple for the external details, when the core its the same.
And yes, it's not secret that matrix recicled sets from dark city, what they usually don't tell you is that they also recicled camera angles and movement, so it's basically the same shot
@VJ Goofy
No, the comparison would be that you said they're both red apples of equal size and taste, but you're wrong because one is actually green, smaller and has a sweeter taste.
And that's not even that great a comparison. It's more like, they might seem a but the same, but one is a dog and the other a hyena.
I probably like the sequels more than most since I wanted to see more of Neo being the one. I might just be really sold on the fight scenes alone just cause they give me so much of what I want.
"Watch films that get bad reviews and wonder why they get bad reviews."-John Waters
Really awesome time stamps on this one, great job guys
19:03, actually the first movie to have that was open your eyes, directed by Alejandro Amenabar. That movie premiered in 1997, two years before the Matrix.
No.
later remade has Vanilla Sky, the most boringest movie ever made
They all talked about their favorite effect from any movie, but did they forget about the Skeksis dying in the Dark Crystal? They were all blown away by that effect.
23:10 - I could be wrong, but I think the word you are looking for is Trip Hop
The plot of the 2nd movie is: neo and the gang need to find the matrix architect to shut down the matrix (something about finding the “Source” mentioned by the oracle). There’s a reveal that neo is another cog in the system of control and is the 6th ‘the One’ to come to the architect. Neo needed the key maker to get to the architect. Even though the story is told in a very convoluted way, I’m surprised you guys didn’t remember or didn’t follow what was going on
Because who gives a shit, the execution is so dumb and boring that it doesnt deserve your attention.
I don't care for The Matrix Reloaded, but I gotta admit that car chase sequence is one of the best car chases ever put to film.
Laughs in The French Connection, Drive, Mad Max Trilogy, Death Proof, Ronin, The Bourne Trilogy, etc.
God damn it. It says that Neo has been looking for Morpheus, he knows about him, so he has some idea about the whole thing
You talking about his denial? Yeah, its dumb as hell.
@@aperson7303 I mean he didn't know anything about the Matrix. Just the word.
The part of rhe Animatrix that always sticks out in my memory is when the machines take over Washington DC and they force like the politician to sign away rights of the government/country. The robot is controlling the politicians hand as he writes.
I thought that was pretty clever, like something a robot might do with their binary thought. As if a person signing something legitimizes the robot cause, when it is the underlying social contract that gives power to that signature that actually matters. Something a robot wouldn’t understand.

I recently rewatched the first Matrix as an adult and I gotta say it holds up extremely well, I was shocked. It’s a 10
Whoa der partner
When the writing is a 1/10, a film doesnt deserve a 10/10
They use humans COMBINED with a form of fusion energy, so it's not like they are just using the humans as batteries... it's more figurative than that. Also it's pretty obvious throughout the films that the matrix is basically just a method of control, subjugation and retribution of humanity on the part of the machine sentience. It's given wider context in the Animatrix that the machines only wanted freedom and a symbiotic relationship with humanity, but humans forced their hands and started the war. It's also stated in Reloaded that even if the one fails his intended task the machines are prepared to accept a certain level of survival, implying they can survive without humans if the matrix is destroyed. On the part of why the need to be in a simulation in the first place, Morpheus says it himself "the body cannot live without the mind"... without the Matrix the podborn humans would become braindead and die.
24:50 "Shut Up", it's the little things yms do that crack me up

Imagine talking about The Matrix trilogy, and never really mention the subtext.
How Neo in the first in The One, but he's just an anomaly within the programming and because of humanity ability to have choice (and hope). Hope being the thing that brought Zee to fight (to have a chance to reunite with Link), The Kid choosing to fight (because he believes in Neo and saving The Hammer). Instead of Neo making the utilitarian choice and to reset the system and reset Zion, he chooses to save Trinity "dooming" humanity, but filled with hope to change.

That CGI one was in front of Dreamcatcher.
The special effects that blow me away, to this day, is pretty much everything in the first Jurassic Park movie. I saw it in the theater when I was a kid, and it blew my mind! It's hard to explain to younger people just how revolutionary those effects were at the time. No one had ever seen ANYTHING like it!

The Wachowskis have it in them to be GODS of schlock. I think the Matrix sort of threw a curveball in that regard
The real question is why do they call biscuits, cookies, and shots inside the Matrix?
My morning just got better.
The original concept for The Matrix was actually to the have the robots use the humans’ brains as a neural network. But when Lilly and Lana presented this idea to the studio, they rejected it because they feared an audience that had only recently been introduced to computers would have trouble understanding the concept. So it was changed to batteries to make it more digestible for moviegoers
I'm not sure if you mentioned Dark City, but it came out in 1998 and was kind of a precursor to The Matrix. I don't think it had any direct influence on The Matrix, but you can see some of the parallels. And it's a very good movie.
You could sing the Bunny Ears Podcast intro one of these days. Macaulay would be a great guest I think as well.
Buffalo 66 was an excellent idea. It wasn't perfect but so comfy. The kind of movie you don't see every day while it's still interesting and still not only doom and gloom.
I wanna know YMS' opinion on 'I Lost My Body'. An acclaimed animated film from this year (French - On Netflix). As for other animated films, maybe 'Weathering With You' will be good?
I really like The animatrix. Very good animated short films.
I feel so bad because the scene where Neo meets Col. Sanders is basically indecipherable on the first viewing or any viewing after without subtitles, but it's also pivotal to understanding Reloaded's goals and understanding what the hell it is everyone's trying to do in Revolutions. It isn't just that all this has happened before, it's that the resistance, the One, the prophecy - all of it is part of the Machine's design, their way of keeping control. Resistance is inevitable, so instead of letting it destroy them, the Machines calculated a solution - one that allows the conflict to stop and start infinitely.
Reloaded is well aware of the problem that Neo is basically Superman, and that's why it ends by telling Neo to go fuck himself, that even though he can punch shit real good, it's not actually securing humanity's freedom. That's also why Revolutions is about finding another way - the _fight_ isn't going to end well, and so Neo sets off to set things right with a giant baby face made of robosquids.
It all makes sense when you really think about it. It only took me...4 viewings? And a lot of fan explanations? Great trilogy.
We didn’t deserve the time stamps (´༎ຶོρ༎ຶོ`)
"Guff", for anyone who's wondering, is originally a danish thing and describes the white fluffy stuff inside certain chocolate sweets, popular in Denmark and Germany.
It is literal filler.
It's funny listening to Adam talk about shit he's actually really biased and nostalgic for like the sequels and The Lion King
Whats wrong with The Lion King? Agree with The Matrix though.
Wasn't there like a lot of green in the Matrix movies? I felt like that was a bit oversaturated.

Rain can hide visual effects issues, the first Pacific Rim used it heavily. Every fight major scene is in the rain or underwater where you can hide any problems with the water effects. It also fucking looks great.
