There are three main sections of the spine. The cervical spine, which is your neck, the thoracic spine, which is your middle and upper back, and then your lower spine, which is your lumbar spine.
Now, the cervical spine acts as the bridge between your brain and your body. It has a very unique function in that it has to be very stable to support the weight of the head but also has to have the ability to move because your cervical spine is actually the most flexible. It can turn from side to side, look up and down, and laterally bend.
Radiculopathy is when there's a nerve that's irritated, typically due to compression, but it's not limited to compression. It can also be irritated through mechanical stressors, stretching, over-irritation, or over-stimulation, but typically it's compression. When this compression occurs, the nerve is exposed to uneven pressure or mechanical stimulation, affecting its ability to function properly.
Cervical radiculopathy is diagnosed when one or more nerves of the cervical spine are affected in this way, typically compressed or pinched, often referred to as a pinched nerve or compressed nerve. Radiculopathy means that the nerve root is compressed to the point that the neurological function of that nerve is negatively impacted, causing either increased or decreased sensation or output.
Symptoms of cervical radiculopathy can vary from patient to patient, and every case is unique in severity. However, common symptoms typically include radiating pain into the neck, shoulders, arms, hands, fingers, or upper chest.
In most cases, the nerve pain or problem affects only one side of the body, and sensory issues like tingling and numbness are common. Motor function issues, such as weakness in muscles like the biceps, forearms, or fingers, and lost reflexes in the arms, may also occur.
Cervical radiculopathy is often caused by spinal degeneration, leading to compression of the nerves as the spine misaligns and deteriorates over time. Poor ergonomics, such as improper phone or computer use, can also contribute, as can conditions like disc herniation, inflammation of the joints, or spinal injuries.
Treatment for cervical radiculopathy typically begins with conservative measures customized to address the underlying cause and alleviate nerve compression. Structural therapy, exercises, and chiropractic care aimed at realigning the spine and relieving pressure on the nerves are often effective.
At Scoliosis Reduction Center, we focus on treating a wide range of spinal conditions, including cervical radiculopathy, with the goal of protecting spinal and nerve health and addressing the root cause of compression. Early intervention is crucial to prevent long-term nerve damage and promote healing.
