The spine is divided into three main sections: the cervical spine (neck), the thoracic spine (middle and upper back), and the lumbar spine (lower back). The cervical spine supports the weight of the head and enables movement, including turning the head side to side and bending it up and down.
Comprising the first seven vertebrae (C1 through C7), the cervical spine serves as a conduit between the brain and the body, with nerves branching off from it. Radiculopathy occurs when these nerves are irritated, pinched, inflamed, or compressed, leading to cervical radiculopathy and causing symptoms in the upper body, arms, hands, and neck.
Symptoms of cervical radiculopathy can vary from mild to severe, including pain along the nerve pathway, neck stiffness, upper chest or back pain, and numbness or weakness in the hands. Sensory disturbances like tingling, numbness, muscle weakness, atrophy, and loss of coordination may also occur. Common causes include spinal misalignment, degeneration, disc bulging or herniation, and foraminal stenosis.
Diagnosis involves identifying the cause and affected nerve and spine area. Treatment focuses on correcting the cause, restoring alignment, improving disc health, and enhancing motion and function. Lifestyle changes addressing obesity, sedentary habits, poor posture, and repetitive movements are crucial for spinal health and symptom reduction.
Physical therapy strengthens muscles and tissues around the spine, while chiropractic care, spinal adjustments, and traction restore alignment and manage degeneration. Hot and cold therapy may provide temporary relief but do not address underlying issues.
Maintaining a healthy cervical spine is vital for overall neurological function. In today's technology-driven age, maintaining good posture is essential to prevent cervical radiculopathy caused by reversing the natural cervical curvature due to constant use of devices like cell phones, laptops, and tablets.
