To me there is no "maybe" about it! This is the BEST Cello Concerto. And there are so many great versions of it, that I really enjoy looking for the next one that I hadn't heard before. I love the way Dvorak uses the whole orchestra, even for a concerto. Some people consider this to be his 10th Symphony.
I have listened to Dvořák’s cello concerto countless times by many cellists such as du Pré, Yo-Yo Ma,, Maisky, and many more and none of them come close to this performance by Rostropovich. His intonation, harmony, and emphasis into this concerto is phenomenal, he doesn’t waste a single inch on the bow, he plays with such perfection. As a cellist I aspire to play like him.

what I like most about this fantastic performance is the orchestra led by conductor giulini... definitely my favorite performance from an orchestra of this piece.
3:50 makes me happy! I have the Rostropovich/Giulini EMI CD of this work, recorded just days before or after this video production. It is my favorite recording of this concerto because Giulini doesn’t just accompany Rostropovich. He presents an orchestral vision that fully complements that of the great soloist. For instance, 3:50 as I mentioned. This beautiful, dance-like flourish is a passage that I always love, an early promise of the glory that is to come. It is always full of joy, though here it has a graceful lilt that is unique from all other performances. This performance has several such moments, and from beginning to end shows complete mastery in the relationships between the solo cello and orchestra.

I truly appreciated this recording of a legend playing a legendary concerto. As a cellist, I appreciated every moment musically, the excellent balance between the orchestra and soloist. As a videographer/photographer, I appreciated the sheer number of camera angles that were covered with this recording. The cellist in me (or any other cellist, I'm sure) would have made a few different selections in the final edit (there were several spots where nothing at all would have been lost to keep the camera on the cello for a few more seconds, especially some very technical sections where it wasn't necessary to cut at that moment to another instrument - and a view of the fingers instead of the bow would have been immensely appreciated by all viewers), but I still love everything that they did or tried to do. I don't think many video editors have the luxury of musician at their side during the process, though I believe this editor was either very experienced or had some help knowing where to feature which instruments. Great job on all accounts! Love it!!

The start of the third movement (30:01) is already one of my favorite moments in classical music - the build up to the solo, the triangle, the regal cello entrance, just amazing. And Rostropovich just goes full send in this section, grace and power. It's a little lighter on tempo than other recordings, but he is just so sweeping and majestic in this recording, every note sings. His little trilling harmonies in the second solo entrance are incredible, I'd have to go back and listen to some other versions, but I'm not sure I've heard that in other recordings. Just a wonderful recording of this piece!

Schon zum zweiten Mal höre ich das zu. Ein Meisterwerk vom besten Interpreten der Welt!
멋지고 아름답네요~ 고맙습니다^^
I love this particular performance. Of course, Rostropovich was always sublime. But the whole thing is just beautiful, visually and otherwise.
Still my favorite performance of all Ive seen. Not only from the solo, but the orchestra as well. Ive seen like 10 differents ones so far.
Yes the tempo is perfect, others are too fast

41:22 No matter who the performer, this part always brings tears to my eyes. So much emotion can be thrown into a simple trill.
I couldn't agree with you more
This passage is literally a cry and breaks me every time.
einfach Genial es gibt und wird kein gleichen dem ROSTROPOVICH
völlig einverstanden
strepitoso, esecuzione di valore storico
OMG How i love this! Great technique and passion!
What is extraordinary is that Rostropovich made two thoroughly remarkable recordings of this concerto. This is one of them. The other, in 1969, with Herbert von Karajan conducting the Berlin Philharmonic. Each, in their way, a music lover’s dream.
Simply said ~ Bravo Bravissimo!
