  • Always Board Never Boring is pleased to share the latest review in his Stick to the Script series. This time, he's looking at the all-time classic from Games Workshop, Space Hulk (third edition, 2009). In this game, a team of Blood Angels terminators enter a desolate space craft in search of vile alien genestealers, important relics, and lost honour.
    Please be aware that Stick to the Script reviews aren't so much about rules and game mechanisms as they are about the way board games can make you feel, so if anyone is interested in a more in-depth discussion of gameplay mechanisms please just share your thoughts in the comments and there may be a deep dive review later on. Please also note that images in the video are intended to represent the feel of gameplay, so are not 100% accurate representations of game mechanisms such as revealing blips and sustained fire.

    Thanks for this awesome video! Space Hulk is without a doubt my most favorite board game of all time (in my humble 57 years of existence anyway) I had the 1st Edition back in ‘89 but left it with a friend in Virginia in 2004. I was fortunate enough to find a new 4th Edition at A Hobby Shop (Yep, that was the real name) in 2016. I opened it in October 2020 and painted the last miniature in November. It hasn’t been off of my gaming table since then! Love, love, love it! Your enthusiastic narrative is well deserved and well delivered!

    In first edition, we had 2 house rules that meant you could frequently lose the timer
    1) rush rules, if one genestealer moves forward and doesn’t die, when it advances again, everything behind it moves forward with it (including unconverted blips)
    2) voluntary and involuntary conversion. If the stealer player chooses to, any out of sight blip can be converted to its numerical equivalent, and chained out in any direction from the original blip point, even into view of marines. Involuntary, when a marine sees the blip, the blips have to chain away from the viewpoint of the marine, UNLESS there’s something blocking that direction, in which case they can chain forward if they have to
    Both of these rules made the stealers just quicker in your face, and a timer made it too difficult for the marine

    Excellent video. Arguably the best game in a box that GW has ever produced. I think it works brilliantly as a lean and stripped down game, but also if you incorporate the psychic combat and hybrids from the first edition expansions it can become a sprawling and intense campaign game for hardcore gamers.
    The biggest downside of Space Hulk is GW seems to deliberately under print it, despite knowing it will sell, the limited supply massively inflates the value of an already expensive game on the secondary market.

      @@n.kat.7928 Good Evening. it was a long time ago... but, this is what I remember - obviously we nicked the idea from the Aliens 2 film - great film. A tech marine was a basic terminator with powerglove and bolter. It was 4 action points to set up the sentry gun (the sentry gun was made from the spare plastic flamers that came in the box, stuck to the top of a small plastic rod etc.) - but they could be made from anything). They could be placed facing in one direction (to cover LOS down a single corridor etc). We had that they had 10 shots and rolled 2 dice for each shot and killed genestealers on a 5 or 6. The sentry gun fired (had to) at any genestealer moving within its LOS. Once the sentry gun was laided it blocked movement for terminators through that square. A terminator could pay 2 action points to "push it to one side" after which it would not function. It did not block LOS or fire for terminators. If it was flamed it was destroyed on a 5 or 6.
      I remember we also played that it could be put on a 90 degree corner and cover 2 corridors at once - that seemed to work OK. Hope that helps. With us the Terminators have a 1 in 8 game success rate. It is brutal, especially when the other player knows the sneaky genestealer tricks to try and make you jam and deplete your ammo before he sends a horde at you! Many times the terminator player's best option is to flame the corridor with your own guys in, hope they survive the flaming (in Ed 1 terminators died only on a roll of a 6) and then walk them through the flames and the flames would block the movement of the genestealers!!! That gave you a bit of a relieve before the nasties were at your back again. All the best, may your bolters not jam and the emperor guide your shot! John.

    Nice! I need to search out your blog one of these days (if it’s still online?). I’ve eyed my Space Hulk set a couple times during quarantine but there’s no chance of playing it any time soon. There’s always the digital versions, of course, and Space Marine Adventures. 3rd edition was, according to GW, going to be the last ever printing of the game, so “get in now or never”... then it sold out fast and they changed their minds, releasing 4th Ed. with a couple bonus items to differentiate it. As a 3rd Ed. owner I was a little annoyed they went back on their word (pretty quickly too) but didn’t make those bonus items available to 3rd Ed owners in an upgrade pack. No big deal, honestly, but I still remember it! Lol. Thanks for the look back at Space Hulk; hopefully we can all get the opportunity to clank/skitter through the corridors in the next 12 months. 👾👾👾

    • @AlwaysBoardNeverBoring
      @AlwaysBoardNeverBoring  3 года назад

      Yeah, I also thought they should have made the few extra missions and tiles available as an upgrade pack, but honestly it wasn't really that much additional material. I honestly don't ever remember them saying "get it now or never" though. I knew that edition was limited, but I never thought it wouldn't ever get printed again. Maybe I just didn't pay attention to their marketing fluff.
      My blog is advertised at the end of every video, and also in the video description for every video on my channel. It hasn't been updated in a while as I just don't get the time to write new reviews while I'm building the channel.

      Always Board Never Boring GW may not have used the exact words, “now or never” but they did say 3rd ed was the last time they would ever produce Space Hulk. I believed them and bought a copy at the time. Not complaining per se, as I’m quite happy to own it, but they did go back on that FOMO tactic/pledge pretty quickly. Re: your blog, lol, I guess I’m not too observant, am I? I always pause your videos at the end as you speed up into the “like/subscribe/bye-bye, bye-bye” bit (to avoid the inevitable impending commercial) but I could have checked the description for links. Lol. Thanks for assist, I’ll be visiting your blog ASAP; I’m sure there’s quality reading to be found there. :-)

      So you're the reason my ad revenue is so low! Yeah, I genuinely don't remember GW saying they would never produce Space Hulk again. Love this review. I love the game, the narrative, the models, the board, atmosphere, difficulty, strategy, and the gameplay.
    What I hate, absolutely hate, is that GW refuses to make money by reprinting this game. I hate that if it does happen it will sell out in minutes (to many scalpers included I assume). I hate they print small box board games like Crypt Hunters, Blitz Bowl and the like only in one or two stores that won't ship internationally.
    I hate that the best content that would help me get friends and family into the bigger games is not available for purchase where I live. Ebay also charges like the same price of the item (sometimes more even) just for shipping and import fees, IF the seller even ships over here. For me it's been quite literally easier to become a Space Marine in real life than to be able to get these games.

    LOL, excellent little stop motion there at the end!
    Thanks for bringing to my attention the imbalance in some of the missions, I guess that makes good thematic sense and is one of GW's choices they are known for.
    The one time I attempted this solo, the marines lost over and over on the same mission (yes, the marines) so it didn't leave me wanting to come back to it very much. But it's been creeping back into my mind lately, wanting to return to the SETTING, wanting to go back to that PLACE. So, perhaps I will give it another shot and try a different map.

    • @AlwaysBoardNeverBoring
      @AlwaysBoardNeverBoring  3 года назад

      Some missions are brutal for the marines, especially mission one from third edition (Suicide Mission), so it's not unusual for the marines to get a battering. Also, it takes longer to get to grips with using the marines, as they are far less forgiving of mistakes and you are under time pressure with them. Sometimes the imbalance in missions is by design, but sometimes it's just not well thought out by GW. For example, there's one mission in third edition, where you can shoot out all the doors very quickly and the marines simply can't lose. But, I'm willing to forgive those few missteps because the game is so much fun.

    • @johnmiddleton4291
      @johnmiddleton4291 3 года назад +2

      Suicide Mission is the same as previous editions and is designed to punish new players to teach them how to position and move the marines properly. If that lesson never happens then it will be a rough ride.

      @AlwaysBoardNeverBoring  3 года назад

      Yeah, it's a purposeful choice. I may be wrong, but I believe they changed Suicide Mission in some way for the fourth edition to make it a bit more gentle, or perhaps just changed the mission order so it wasn't the introduction. I'll have to look it up, because I don't quite remember.

      @@johnmiddleton4291 All right Captain Awesome at Everything, take a day off. You're making the mortals feel bad. I just checked and Fourth Edition has a new mission one called Beachhead, and Suicide Mission was pushed to mission two and looks unchanged. I suspect that might have been to make for a less frustrating entry point for new players, although looking at it again it looks like you get 10 marines in Beachhead, so maybe it was to make the first mission more of a showcase spectacle (a bit like The Trial, in HeroQuest, which threw everything on the board).

      Space Hulk is designed for two players - one marine, one genestealer. However, it's pretty easy to play solo, which I do all the time. You just randomise the blips, and then play the genestealers to the best of your ability (they pretty much just sneak up to attack in hand to hand combat, so the decision space for them is pretty limited).

    Good review of this great game. We have such similar taste in board games! One of the things I like is that you can learn the rules in about 10 minutes, and there aren't dozens of fiddly things to remember and note down.
    I also think each of the editions has its merits: the 1st Edition has a grey retro look (which I like), but most importantly has the expansions Deathwing and Genestealer. The 2nd Edition looks a lot better, and has more missions, but they tinkered with the rules, and not in a good way. The 3rd and 4th Editions simply look gorgeous, some of the best miniatures ever, and the rules are back to the 1st Edition with a few tweaks and additions.
    I don't even mind playing as the Genestealer player. Deciding where to place your blips, trying to bluff the Marine player, doing the Genestealer "dance" to try and get a bolter to jam by making a series of free 90 degree turns is all part of it. Not as many decisions to make, for sure, but it can be a lot of fun.

    • @AlwaysBoardNeverBoring
      @AlwaysBoardNeverBoring  3 года назад

      I've always said the best games are the ones where you can push the rules off the table and focus on your opponent or becoming immersed in the world the game is creating. Space Hulk is one of the finest examples of that.
      I don't dislike playing the genestealers, but comparatively, I think it's the lesser of the two halves of the game. Second edition is definitely the worst in terms of rules. Just the removal of the timer is enough to completely change the feel of the game, and the flamer rules aren't as good either.

    • @phildevey6302
      @phildevey6302 3 года назад +1

      Agreed. One thing with the Genestealers is learning not to just rush up suicidally all the time, and throw them away. Sometimes if you have a corridor with a Marine on Overwatch at the top, you can get part way up the corridor, stop there, and fill in behind with Genestealers. When the Marine comes off Overwatch he may not be able to kill them all, and next turn you start off part way along the corridor, nearer to the marines. Sometimes you do just have to try and rush them, and hope for the best, but not always.

      @@phildevey6302 Yeah, there's some little tricks you can do: Using doors to force more shots, blocking line of sight to amass your forces, ducking in an out of line of sight as you approach enemies. Choosing when and where to reveal blips can be an important decision. It's just a lot more straightforward. But like you say, there are some scenarios where you do just have to run head first at an autocannon and hope it blows up before too many genestealers are dead.

    This version is pretty but ultimately a let down if you want to move on. By far the best missions for the game are the WD linked campaigns like Necromunda, Last Stand, and Genestealer Invasion of Septimus V. They are almost impossible to win. But then GW never bothered to print them for this version of the game.
    All the great expansion stuff never made it forward to the new version, and that's a shame. GW really, really needs to do a new version of this game and a single expansion that brings in all the genestealer hybrids and all the new goodies they have for them currently. . There was no reason not to, after all. I said at the time that I would have liked an opportunity to buy the extra content as an upgrade pack, but I didn't lose any sleep over it (if I wanted them that badly I could have bought the fourth edition, sold off the miniatures on eBay and recouped most of my costs, but it felt like too much effort). Besides, I don't feel like I was screwed, as by that time I'd been playing Space Hulk for something like five years with my third edition, so I don't think I could complain all that much about missing out on a few minor things.

Funnily enough Hulk Hogan is not allowed to wear anything Green or Purple in colour and doing so would be a breach in the Copyright agreement! The solo rules for Space Hulk were published in the deathwing expansion for first ed and are very simple. You basically control both sides and the blips convert instantly at their spawn points. The stealers will not move into LoS of a marine unless they can close and get in at least one attack. I prefer to use the blips for movement out of LoS and play the game as normal because the blips are cool. I draw them at random and do not look at them until they enter LoS or I choose to convert them.
      BGG has lots of posts about this, but many people try to make an enemy AI, which is completely unnecessary because the enemy decisions are very simple in Space Hulk.
      In general almost all games are easy to solo with almost no change if you play two handed and fairly.
