Hi @Chau, my pleasure and thank you for your support! It is just quite hard to have the time to make videos with my busy work as a pharmacist and Chinese Medicine practitioner. Having said that, I just uploaded a new video and hope you will enjoy watching and learning 😊
hi love the video but and want to make it but i cant find the lotus seeds, lilly bulbs and snow fungus would a chinese grocery carry these loved the video😁
Hi there, glad that you love the videos! Thank you! Yeah, these are very common herbs/food ingredients. You should be able to find them in most Chinese grocery stores! Hope you will find them. Good luck!
I have a special request. I bought a Chinese scale this year because I am an herbalist and I’m learning Chinese herbal medicine. I’m still slowly trying to figure out how they work. Could you make a more in depth instructional video about the scale ? Looks like I have the exact same scale. Wonderful videos ! Thank you and Happy holidays !
Hi Laurent, nice meeting another herbalist here! Yay! It is great that you are learning Chinese herbal medicine and hope that you are enjoying it. I am so happy to hear that you got yourself this scale. In Australia, they mostly use the standard balance or digital scale, not this traditional type. I was taught how to use it by my father who is a Chinese medicine practitioner. I probably won't do a video just for it as it won't be practical for many. Yet, it is not hard to use. Let me try to explain here. You use one hand to hold the scale (as you can see in this video). And you can see 'many little dots' on the handle. You need to check with your seller, what they represent (might be different from mine). Mine is one small dot represent 1g. So, if I need to measure 9g, then I will count 9 dots and leave the thread with the small weight over there. I shall then put the herbs on the 'pan'. You should see a small 'clock' looking thingy. This scale basically is a balance scale. So, once you adding herb till the two 'hands' in the 'touching' each other or forming a 'balance', that's mean the herb in the pan is 9g. I hope it makes sense! If don't, I think it is best to check with your seller or manufacturer too, just in case is different than mine! Hope it helps! Last not but least, happy holidays!
Thank you Alex! Very glad that you enjoyed the video and thanks for subscribing :) (Sorry I just realised I replied to your comment previously from my personal account! Opps! I am still new to this !)
Hi ! Great videos !! I look forward to see more of them. Question for you, when I see TCM doctors they often find my body more to the cold side. In that case, how often should I drink this soup ? Is it also the same benefit with the herbs in the chinese chicken soup ?
Hi there, very happy to hear you are enjoying watching my videos! Usually just once a week or so. However, if you already have seen TCM doctors, I would recommend you to have a chat with them about taking more herbs on your own. As they knows your health status well, I have no idea about your health, as in it is better for them to decide what best for you. All the best! Take care!
Hi , very informative video. Would like to know if gingko seeds can be added into this dessert. And what are the properties of gingko. Thanks in advance
Hi Karen, sorry for late reply! I think I missed your message. Yes, you can add gingko in this recipe. Gingko is neutral and can help to clear phlegm/dampness, hence used for wheezing or cough with phlegm. However, in Chinese medicine, gingko is classified as 'slightly toxic'. It means to use in smaller doses and not used too frequently. Once in a while is fine! Just not too often! Hope the above helps!
This one is one of my favorite (also green bean soup) sweet desserts growing up. Didn't know it was so simple and quick to prepare. Will make it myself now. Thank you!
Hi @Celia, yeah my favourite too! Green bean soup is even easier! I love my Asian sweet soups, healthier than cakes, cookies and croissants 🤣 My excuses for myself 🤣 Let me know how did you go with making this! Enjoy! 😋
Hi @Janet, thank you for subscribing to my channel! 🙏 No, I am sorry, I don't have videos in Cantonese though I can speak reasonably fluent Cantonese. I hope eventually my channel will grow big enough to be able to make Cantonese videos. So, your support is really big help and hope you will share my videos to friends whom you think will enjoy too! Thanks again!💞
Just found your channel and absolutely love learning these amazing Chinese recipes. Just wondering if children can also eat these ingredients. My kids always want to try or eat whatever I’m eating.
Hi @NJ Vanhsy, thank you and so happy to hear that you are enjoying my channel 😊 As for this particular soup, it is often eaten as sweet treats in Asia, I would say it is ok for children. But not for too young as some ingredients here might be hard to chew (eg lotus seeds, white fungus) if the child is too young.
I recently bought some Tiger Lily buds at the Asian market. But you seem to be using here Lily bulbs. Are both used in Chinese medicine? And are tiger lily buds, The daylilies, Hemmerocallis? And the lily bulbs from the Lilium species family. Also there are water lilies and lotus plants. Which lilies are we using? And since I bought Tiger Lily buds, can you tell me the traditional medicinal properties for these. I am making herbal teas and tinctures. I love your channel, thank you very much, the herb lady, cyndi
Hi @Cynthia, I am so sorry for late reply as I didn't know why I didn't see your comment till now. Hope I didn't keep you waiting! Ummm.......there are so many lily flowers out there, and it is very confusing! In Chinese Medicine, we use lily bulbs or the botanical name of this type of lily we used is Bulbus Lilii. TIger lily seems to be slightly different, although it is still under the same genius of Lilium. And Daylily is Hemerocallis, it is used for cooking in some Chinese cuisines too. As for tiger lily buds, frankly, I am not too familiar with it as what we learned or used in Chinese Medicine is Bulbus Lilii. One thing I noticed though, many labels in Asian markets might not be too accurate. For example, I found some Asian markets here labelled daylily as LIly flowers in English but it is a different name in Chinese. For me who knows how to read Chinese, the Chinese name is correct but not the English name. If you want to use Chinese herbs more for health reasons, it will be better if you get your herbs from a proper Chinese herbal shop. Hope the above helps!
Hi Shirly. I love your channel. You have a very calm voice and explains very clearly. If I dont have lily bulb and longan but I have red dates and san cha. Can I replace with these 2 ingredients ?
@Rosalind, thank you so much and I am so happy you are enjoying my channel and learning too😊 Red dates are already in the original recipes. If you want to add shan zha, you can but shan zha has sour taste. So, your soup will taste differently from my recipe. Also, the function of the soup will change. It will have less calming effect. This is because both longan fruit and lily bulbs can help to calm 'Shen' , hence can help for better sleep. If you take these two away, then the purpose of the soup will not be the same. Shan zha is more for helping to relieve indigestion. So, the functions are quite different. But if you only want a sweet dish, and the white fungus can help with collagen. Then it is ok but it would have the 'calming' effect of this recipe intended to in the first place. Hope this helps!
@Rosalind, my pleasure. I just noticed a typo there -- "Then it is ok but it ***WON"T have the 'calming' effect of this recipe intended to in the first place. Hope this helps!"

😍 how do you store white fungus soup? I always make too much, but I heard that you can't leave soaked snow fungus in the fridge even because it goes bad.
@Angelique, yeah, please don't soak your snow fungus for too long. A couple of hours is ok but definitely not overnight (aka longer than 8 hours). I am not too sure about snow fungus, yet there are cases of food poisoning from oversoaking black fungus. Please read the link below www.cfs.gov.hk/english/multimedia/multimedia_pub/multimedia_pub_fsf_158_04.html Due to the above warning, I would recommend we would do the same for snow fungus. As for leftovers, I am not too sure myself after I read the above warning.🤣 I would recommend finishing on the same day if possible.
Hi @Dana, yeah, absolutely, you can use fresh jujubes instead. Yet, I personally found dried jujubes have slightly sweeter taste. As for fresh jujubes, I tend to eat them like fruits. Some of my friends called fresh jujubes 'Chinese apples'!
HI @Doris, thanks for your suggestion! Great idea about peach gum. I have some peach gum at home and I love it. May do one video some times soon. The simplest recipe is simply soak the peach gum till they are enlarged, then add some red dates and rock sugar and cook them together. This is a simple and easy recipe. Enjoy! 😊
Thank you Alice! Me too, I need it hence I decided to make it for this video. I tested a few recipes too. So, took one big pot to work, and invited girlfriends over for another big pot . They are all my guinea pigs! 😆
@Aravind, the snow fungus in this recipe is a good source of collagen. Hi thank you for your informative video, by the way may I know whether I can add the dried mandarin peel to this tongsui or not.? The traditional medicine shopkeeper which I bought this dried mandarin peel from told me I can add to my tongsui
Hello ! I want to know how often to eat this soup? Can cook and store in fridge and eat later? You cooked one pot and is that something to cook a lot once or should I cook little each time?
Hi Mattli, I think once a week or so is enough. Please remember it is not a medication or something that you take everyday. It is more like a support. In Asia, we eat it as dessert. You can store in fridge for a day or two but no more than that. Cook a small portion each time would be preferred. Hope the above helps!
When you soak the snow fungus, do you have to soak the whole thing? is it possible to cut just what you need or will it break apart too much? I want to try making the recipes but I just want 1 serving not a entire pot, I can't eat so much by myself =o
Hi @Artermis , you don't have to soak the whole snow fungus. Simply cut and soak only what you need. Yeah it may break apart too much but still better than wasting the whole pot ☺️ let me know how you go with this ☺️
@Krystal, eczema is a complex disease where there would be very different presentation, stages of the dieases (such as acute, dormant etc), and many other factors, so it is best to seek consultation with a qualified TCM practitioner. Take care !
Hi @May, good question! You can soak them all together. You don't have to soak them separately. I did so for better control of the softness I want in each herb as some herbs get soft quickly. But you really don't have to do so!
@May, my pleasure! Very happy to hear you are more confident with the knowledge you have now with my videos and try making these yummy recipes 😊 Don't forget to sign up for my newsletter too. Hi Fatema, unfortunately, there are no specific international brands or sites for Chinese herbs that I am aware of. I might be wrong though, do check around. You should be able to buy them from Chinese herbal shops in Chinatown or any Asian neighborhood. You can also buy from Asian grocery. Having said that, their quality might not be as high standard. Another good way is to ask around your Asian friends and try to get recommendations from them about a trusted local Chinese herbal stores. Hope the above help! Thank you for watching! 😊
Hi in Ching po leung Chinese herbal soup are you supposed to eat all the herbs too? I.e. are they edible or just used to release their health properties during boiling? Thanks
Hi @Emma, for Ching Po Leung herbal soup, I am not sure which version you used as there are many different recipes for this soup. It all depend on what herbs you used. Herbs such as Lily bulbs, barley, lotus seeds etc, you can eat them. The reason we discard some herbs as they are not very palatable. Since the 'essence' are already released in the soup, we can throw them away and just drink the soup. Yet, if the herbs are yummy to eat, I usually do eat them!

So, I can't really give any specific advice here. It is so thoughtful of you helping your sister to ask question, I wish she will get well soon! Take care!

Hi Melina, if you cook it and want to store in the fridge, I would recommend to eat it within 2 days. This is because the white fungus can get quite soggy if store in fridge for too long! Just my own preference!
I’m curious I’m guessing the sugar obviously makes it taste better but as someone who is trying to lower sugar intake is there another way to prepare without always using sugar
@xia1494, you totally can omit the sugar. I thought I have mentioned that in the video. Some of the herbs are already sweet, you don't have to add the sugar.
Those herbs are sold in asian grocery stores in USA. I worry they have chemicals and pesticides. Where can I buy all the herbs you teach safely without chemical and pesticides? Thank you.
HI Sally, thank you so much for subscribing! I just read your email, a quick reply here first and reply properly with email very soon! I will definitely keep you posted with my upcoming online course! Thanks again for supporting and can't wait to 'meet' you in my online course soon! 😊
Hi @Fran, may not be a good idea. There were cases of poisoning of inadequate handling (soaking) of black fungus. I would recommend only soak white fungus for a couple of hours.
HI @Violin, this sweet soup doesn't have Sha Shen though. Dang Shen is not often added to sweet soup. It is a Qi tonic, if you like the taste in sweet soup, and want to have a Qi tonic, you could it. The taste will be quite different from this recipe as Dang Shen has a distinct flavour. And if without the lily bulb, the function of the 'calming the spirit and clearing heat' is reduced.
@@violingold3727 Ummm..... lily bulbs are considered a very very common herb and should be very easy to find. If you can't find lily bulbs, I don't think you can find other herbs anyway. Both Lotus Seeds and Longan fruits have calming effects too, that's why they are in this recipe. I guess it would be the best you could do, just don't put lily bulbs for now till you can get it!
Hi @The Panda Bao, you can start with 1.5L of water, and then add more as you go. This is because the water will slowly reduce during the cooking process, also the white fungus may absorb more water during the cooking process. It also depends on your preference on the consistency of the soup and if you like to cook the fungus till very soft or leave it more crunchy. Enjoy the soup!
Shirley, I notice you are also a western pharmacist which even gives you more credibility for me. Question?? If someone is suffering from AMLeukemia and are on new medications aproved by the FDA should they be taking any Chinese medicines.
Yeah totally agreed. I also personally prefer earthware. But I broke my own 🤣 also, these days is very hard to find good quality glass pot in standard kitchen store in the west. I tried to look for one here in Melbourne but with no much success.
I looked before but the shipping is so expensive 😂 and due to the border closure, I heard it takes forever to come here. And it is glass,I'm afraid it will crack during shipping? I will look into it more and thanks for your tips!

Hi there, glad that you love the videos! Thank you! Yeah, these are very common herbs/food ingredients. You should be able to find them in most Chinese grocery stores! Hope you will find them. Good luck!
Thank you for sharing😘
Bibie, thanks for watching and supporting my work here! 😊
Fantastic video, well explained and detailed. Looking forward to seeing more :)
Take care!
@@ChineseHerbalPantry thank you for your reply :)

Hi Shirley love TCM videos. Is this herbal dessert suitable for ppl with autoimmune problems?
Would love ur advice.
Thank you so much for your videos!!! ❤️
Thank you for watching! Hope these videos are helpful for you 😊
Hi , very informative video.
Thank you ! Wonderful !
Hi Laurent, thank you for watching! Hope you find it helpful
😊
What I understand from the TCM Dr. is not to soak snow fungus or black fungus in hot water. Reason is it will deplete the nutrients of the fungus.
Enjoy! 😋
I just subscribed to your channel. Thanks for sharing. Do you have any videos in Cantonese?
Hi @Janet, thank you for subscribing to my channel! 🙏 No, I am sorry, I don't have videos in Cantonese though I can speak reasonably fluent Cantonese. I still find it hard to find time to film English video regularly here due to my day jobs in pharmacy and Chinese Medicine. I hope eventually my channel will grow big enough to be able to make Cantonese videos. So, your support is really big help and hope you will share my videos to friends whom you think will enjoy too! Thanks again!💞
Is it good cook on slow cooker?
Just found your channel and absolutely love learning these amazing Chinese recipes. Just wondering if children can also eat these ingredients. My kids always want to try or eat whatever I’m eating.
Hi @NJ Vanhsy, thank you and so happy to hear that you are enjoying my channel 😊 As for this particular soup, it is often eaten as sweet treats in Asia, I would say it is ok for children. But not for too young as some ingredients here might be hard to chew (eg lotus seeds, white fungus) if the child is too young.
does anyone know if you can freeze after making or how long you can keep in the fridge, reheat etc?
@@ChineseHerbalPantry Shirley thanks so much for your feedbacks. 😗

Please read the link below
www.cfs.gov.hk/english/multimedia/multimedia_pub/multimedia_pub_fsf_158_04.html
Due to the above warning, I would recommend we would do the same for snow fungus.
As for leftovers, I am not too sure myself after I read the above warning.🤣 I would recommend finishing on the same day if possible.
Thanks for the recipe. How often can you eat this soup and how many servings is your recipe for?
HI Connie, you can eat this soup about once a week or so. My recipe is for 3-4 persons/servings.
Can I use fresh Jujubes in place of dried Jujubes?
Thank you..
Thanks for sharing ! :)
Very good recipe . Do you have a recipe for peach gum ?
HI @Doris, thanks for your suggestion! Great idea about peach gum. I have some peach gum at home and I love it. May do one video some times soon. The simplest recipe is simply soak the peach gum till they are enlarged, then add some red dates and rock sugar and cook them together. This is a simple and easy recipe. Enjoy! 😊
@@ChineseHerbalPantrycan I use peach gum as a substitute for dried longan?

Thank you Alice! Me too, I need it hence I decided to make it for this video. I tested a few recipes too. So, took one big pot to work, and invited girlfriends over for another big pot . They are all my guinea pigs! 😆

Hi thank you for your informative video, by the way may I know whether I can add the dried mandarin peel to this tongsui or not.?
The traditional medicine shopkeeper which I bought this dried mandarin peel from told me I can add to my tongsui
Hi Ann, you can add the mandarin peel. But mandarin peel has a gentle bitter taste. So, the flavour of this tongsui will change a bit.
Thanks
Thank you for watching 😊
Ty for this cant wait to make it
@a b, hope you like this nourishing sweet soup! Enjoy! 😊
Yeah it may break apart too much but still better than wasting the whole pot ☺️ let me know how you go with this ☺️
Hi Shirley, any recipe for eczema sufferers?
@Krystal, eczema is a complex disease where there would be very different presentation, stages of the dieases (such as acute, dormant etc), and many other factors, so it is best to seek consultation with a qualified TCM practitioner. Take care !
What is the reasoning of soaking the herbs separately? Thank you.
Hi @May, good question! You can soak them all together. You don't have to soak them separately. I did so for better control of the softness I want in each herb as some herbs get soft quickly. But you really don't have to do so!

any specific brand or site you can recommend where we can buy online or a brand that is trustable?

Hello good evening... Can we change the rock sugar to brown sugar??
Hi Shuella, yes, you can change to brown sugar!
This is sooo good! How long can i store it?
Hi Melina, if you cook it and want to store in the fridge, I would recommend to eat it within 2 days. This is because the white fungus can get quite soggy if store in fridge for too long! Just my own preference!
Can we replace the rock sugar with palm sugar or other sugar, such as brown sugar or honey?
@Violin, you can change it other sugars. A note is brown sugar is warming.
@@ChineseHerbalPantry thank you so much🤗
I’m curious I’m guessing the sugar obviously makes it taste better but as someone who is trying to lower sugar intake is there another way to prepare without always using sugar
@xia1494, you totally can omit the sugar. I thought I have mentioned that in the video. Some of the herbs are already sweet, you don't have to add the sugar.
@@ChineseHerbalPantry sorry i mightve skimmed thru. but i relized ill add sugar but i wont drink the soup base

We do not have lily bulb and shashen, but dang shen, will that work?
HI @Violin, this sweet soup doesn't have Sha Shen though. Dang Shen is not often added to sweet soup. It is a Qi tonic, if you like the taste in sweet soup, and want to have a Qi tonic, you could it. The taste will be quite different from this recipe as Dang Shen has a distinct flavour. And if without the lily bulb, the function of the 'calming the spirit and clearing heat' is reduced.
@@ChineseHerbalPantry thanks...it's sad that we do not have the lily bulb:(. If that is the case then what can we use to substitutw for calming?
@@violingold3727 Ummm..... lily bulbs are considered a very very common herb and should be very easy to find. If you can't find lily bulbs, I don't think you can find other herbs anyway. Both Lotus Seeds and Longan fruits have calming effects too, that's why they are in this recipe. I guess it would be the best you could do, just don't put lily bulbs for now till you can get it!
@@ChineseHerbalPantry thank you😊🙏
for snow fungus, can i use a fresh one?
Hi Pasonz, yes! Of course if you have fresh snow fungus! 😊
Can children under 12 years old drink this soup?
How much water we use to cook this?
Hi @The Panda Bao, you can start with 1.5L of water, and then add more as you go. This is because the water will slowly reduce during the cooking process, also the white fungus may absorb more water during the cooking process. It also depends on your preference on the consistency of the soup and if you like to cook the fungus till very soft or leave it more crunchy. Enjoy the soup!
Anything for birth Dr?
I'm surprised you don't drink this cold
Ha, thats right! It will taste very good if drink this cold too! 😊
Shirley, I notice you are also a western pharmacist which even gives you more credibility for me. Question?? If someone is suffering from AMLeukemia and are on new medications aproved by the FDA should they be taking any Chinese medicines.
Using glass pot is better.
Yeah totally agreed. I also personally prefer earthware. But I broke my own 🤣 also, these days is very hard to find good quality glass pot in standard kitchen store in the west. I tried to look for one here in Melbourne but with no much success.
