    From age 5 until I was 19, I camped every month with my father. Winter time, snow caves, the desert, you name it, we did it. In 1998 he suddenly passed away and I have never set foot in a tent ever since. Never camped, never even been around a fire. It just hurt to much to be out there without him. Your videos have inspired me to get back into it, Joe. I appreciate you making these videos. It's going to bring back memories for me when I get out there this year.
    Thanks again!

    JoeRobinet, Here's how you solve the hill problem. A pulley. Attach a rope to your sled, walk to the top of the hill, and then a little further in, anchor the pulley to a stout tree, run the rope through the pulley, then attach the rope to yourself, then, walk down the hill. Let gravity, and your body weight, work for you. Carabiners make for quick connections (in the absence of a pulley, tie a "Trucker's Hitch").

    You should invest in some K9 socks / shoes for your companion. Not only does it protect from snow and the cold, but it also helps during summer out in the wilderness. I don't usually make my dog wear them unless I know it'll be a lot of trekking across ice or very rocky (and sharp) areas during the summer. I don't want him to get hurt and I don't want to carry him out should something happen.

    • @MrDanisve
      @MrDanisve 6 лет назад +25

      Not really cold enough to warrant that or the terrain. Dogs get rid of alot of heat thru their paws aswell so clothing them up for no reason only impairs the dogs ability to regulate heat. As he/she pretty much only has the panting ability to get rid of heat.
      But altso know that dogs can get sore pawns as we get sore feet, specially if they are indoor dogs that are not used to much walking in terrain. However im pretty sure this is a dog thats pretty active and used to walking in the woods.
      Live in Norway and do alot of mountain trekking with ma dog, only used socks on 1 place so far. Was cause of the jagged stones everywhere, almost like knifes. He has gotten a couple of bumps on his paws thru the years. But mostly from him bumping them into things.
      All in all, i think my dog would prefer the few bruises he has gotten over the years. Instead of wearing those annoying socks :P

    • @robertm8318
      @robertm8318 6 лет назад +6

      Pups that are accustomed to the activity will do fine. Locking in the moisture and blocking the heat dissipation from their pads is more likely to create problems than to prevent them.

    • @danopticon
      @danopticon 5 лет назад +2

      The K9 socks are a great idea! To the people naysaying the suggestion: Joe himself states early into the video as they trek across the snow that Scout’s paw may be hurt, that he’s limping, and he hopes it’s something temporary and not something worse that trekking will worsen further; I would guess the suggestion is in reaction to that, and it’s something I’ll be bringing along with me myself now, in case a pet’s paw gets injured.

      Maybe carrying a come-along strap would help make it easier. Or get to the top of the hill with a rope and use a tree to pull it up the hill. EDIT: I see where you explained you couldn't get purchase because of the ice. Maybe lean your back, front, side or foot against a tree for stability while you're pulling. That way you don't move and you can pull the sled up the hill.

    yep, no onions for puppers! consider carrying Liquid Bandage for him and you. I have been in many situations where it improved my ability to go on, the cracks I get by my nails and minor cuts, but it made all the difference for my poochy once. She had a big part of one of her pads gone and it was cold and snowy and she would just chew her foot. This didn't go on long before I tried the liquid bandage, it burns at first, so blow as you apply, it then offers immediate protection and relief. Doggy and I got thru the rest of the hike with ease, her foot also healed quickly at home.

    Between the ages of 11 to 15 my dog, a black lab, and I would camp out in the Arizona mountains. My income was from catching hundreds of pounds of rattlesnakes. we could stay out for weeks doing that and my parents did not care. Of course, we didn't eat as well as you do Joe, mostly we ate snake. When my dog died I had a heart attack at the age of 17, never got to drive, and with a complication that came after, I cannot walk, When I watch you I pretend you are in the sand. One last thing, when it was time to go home, I did not have to worry about directions. I just told my dog ' let's go home'., and she would lead me home every time. A good working dog is the best dog to have. Easy to train and a companion for its entire life. Oh yeah, I almost forgot, for that 16 years she never left my side more than a few feet.
