"There's no such thing as the right colour, there is only the right context."
That's a damn fine quote right there.
Me in 4th grade: slaps all of the water colours on a sheet....crap brown, vomit red blue green, and black...😂
I've been taught about colour theory so many times now, but up until this point I could never seem to get a handle on how the hell I was supposed to _apply_ it to my own work. Watching this video was like an epiphany in slow motion. Thank you for teaching me the wonders of the *W A R P Z O N E*.
hahaha, awesome!
>Watching this video was like an epiphany in slow motion
This.
lmao the warp-zone
I feel like my third eye has just POPPED open. Variety - holy hell!! That’s what I was missing! Brb time to practice
Are you back from practice yet?
Hey, how'd it turn out?

I love finding artists/teachers that have their own ways of doing things. You have a very chaotic nature to your expressionist style and it's very refreshing. I learned a lot just from this single video.
Dackson Flux thanks a lot, and I’m glad the video helped!
You saved my dying passion. Thank you.
This is amazing, I've always wondered how some artists went about adding what feels like so many different colors, yet keeping the whole coherent. Your paintings feel so organic and there's so much edge variety.
Love it
Hi Marco. I discovered your work on Deviant Art and now I've discovered you also do RUclips videos. Really inspiring art and teaching. Thank you!
Xd
I'm going through your many tutorials, trying to improve myself, and I can't believe I didn't watch this one earlier. The content is so enriching and helpful. Also, when you said that "there's no such thing as the right color, there is only the right context", I looked at what you were making there again and it genuinely made me smile for some reason. Watching this video has inspired me greatly, thank you sir.
Thank you very much for this video, I am a artist that loves to do values (gray scale) on my character and I never do background. I tried what you showed on this video using color only and using gray in between colors and I am surprised what i came up with. I practice using thumbnails try to get the color and the lighting right, I made a cave, where the outside lighting was warm and the inside of the cave was cool colors and that thumb nail turn out beautiful. And you are right, colors do communicate better with people. I showed my wife and her first reaction was "Oh wow!" she never gave me that from my gray scales drawings :(
Thank you for the inspiration.
OmniVenom nice!
I just found this video after years of struggling with color, and this was so incredibly helpful! I was so stuck on portraying "accurate colors" that I forgot about the true magic of art, which is self expression and being "beyond reality". Thank you so much for taking your time to talk about this stuff!
Im not salty that you havent been uploading videos, thats totally fine and you're busy. But I love the way you explain things and go about working on your projects, its nothing like anyone else I've seen on youtube. Just letting you know you have an audience. :)
Sorry for the year-late reply, but I appreciate your comment, thank you!
No problem! Guess it's about time to rewatch your videos.
I am so glad that I clicked on this almost ancient video because to me the most helpful thing ist just watching experienced people work in real time and seeing exactly what they are doing. Especially in this context because this color variaty thing is just something that I struggle with to naturally include in my workflow
One of the best video to understand about colors in painting
Marco the is great! This is just about the only video on RUclips that has taught me about painting with colour rather than another colour wheel demo.
Thanks for sharing :).
I've been drawing and painting for nearly 20 years now and this is the first time I feel like I've had a handle on colour. The last year I've worked entirely with black fineliners just to avoid the anxiety of colour but I think I'm ready to try again!
I send this to everyone I know who's trying to improve their color. Thank you so much!
flattered - thank you!
You are my hero Marco. This video was pure quality - full of thought-awakening notes and hints. You explain all this very well. The last years time I've been increasingly aware of color-vibration and the abstraction-quality of it, and I loooove playing with it and seeing how far one can take something, before it becomes too abstract. This video hit the topic right on the spot. Best video hands down I've seen on this subject. Thank you sincerely!
All your videos and explanations give me a new way to paint digitally! Thank you Marco! And we are okay with you not updating because of your busy schedule, i never get bored watching all your videos all over again and of course we'll be very glad every time we get notifications that you've uploaded new video. It's teacher like you that we need! Oh thanks god there's internet and youtube!
Thank you!
I'm so grateful for your wonderful videos, especially this one, about using color and expressing oneself using more colors. Colors are what have drawn some of us into the world of painting. Using variety in color, has always been my favorite from many great artists out there, but as a learner, I've always wondered how they achieved such a feat. Thanks a ton for explaining what goes into it. Now I know. From now on, it'll be more pleasure to paint subtle hues and variations in it for greater expressiveness and fun. "There is no right color." I'm taking this home.
Your videos and art are so inspirational! I appreciate the sense of freedom and fun in all of this
I have never been able to grasp the concept of colour as well as I have after watching this. Everything you mentioned about the warp zone and using saturation as a tool to play with hue is so helpful! And on top of all that, your idea of cropping any area of the canvas and still being able to find it abstract and interesting is such a good way to tell if you are truly reaching the full potential of self expression! I love your videos 💯
Just found you're channel, you're a huge inspiration man , I always loved the "messy look" on paintings and you're a huge lookup to from now on :)
You are an amazing teacher. I’ve been really trying to learn about color theory but it was so hard for me to really grasp the idea. I’m sort of the opposite of you that I love to draw and am incredibly intimidated by color. The way you describe abstract use of color really makes me understand not only what I want out of my art, but puts into words what I already look for and appreciate in other people’s art
“Anyone can draw these pumpkin shaped heads.”
Me:
Um...
This video was exactly what i was looking for.My great problem with color variation is how to know exactly what color to use and how to use it.You discussed exactly this topic.
I always avoided so much color variations because the end result always had a dirty look. The real trick as you said,is to use warm tones variations with warm colors and vice versa. Thanks!
You're so amazing at teaching incredibly abstract concepts. Love your brain. It's like Christmas morning every time I see a Bucci guide pop up in my sub box. You're amazing, thanks for the inspiration.
Now this video is published 4 years ago...
I've been learning A LOT from your videos man.
Thank you very much.
This video is pure gold.. I really love your paintings... I can see each stroke, and they are so different and colorful.. I feel inspired to create anything in the world. Thank you!
Learned so much. Really appreciate the emphasis on self expression. Also admire the your use of abstract painting, as you said to imitate real life! So glad I found this.
I love your phrase “ color is really abstract. There are no rules. Its very personal and color has to move” - best color advice I have ever heard. Its truly freeing and inspirational way of thinking about color and edges
I'm SO glad you're back! Amazing video explaining what I've always wanted to know about digital painting! Thank you!
Holy crap, Marco, I'm so glad there's finally a new video! Your videos are my favorite on youtube :)
High praise indeed, but yours are excellent too!
the most motivational, entertaining and informative painter ive seen on here. thank you so much for these videos. they are so deeply appreciated!
this explaination of colors just blew my mind! this was exactly what i needed to improve my color techniques! thanks!
Thanks for sharing. Have always been fascinated by the way you use colour. I look at your book regularly.
I am glad I found this video and I agree entirely with everything you said. I have watched a hell of a lot of tutorials on painting but this is definitely the one I was missing, Cheers Marco
Excellent lesson. Type of stuff very few you tube teachers talk about, if any. Thanks!
I love that someone shares a similar passion towards color ! Great video
Thank you, you open my mind!
thanks for being there for us marco ... you are a great teacher :)
I checked out your fundamentals video years ago, and it was a great jumping off point for me. Some of the concepts you presented really inspired me to get creative and expressive. Also... YOU'RE BACK!
That is a very interesting video. Thanks for sharing your knowledge and how you use colours, I'll be sure to try to incorporate them in my future paintings, both digital and traditional.
Finally somone adresses how a painting works on abstract level. It helps me understand why i like some paintings. I have been thinking on stuff like this, and now u post a tutorial about it! really good. :)
Amazing! Thank you so much, it’s so educational how you break down color and the complex relationships between them
This video is awesome! I love your style, your drawings are so colourful and joyful, a real feast for the eyes. Thank you for sharing such precious hints with us
I remember Mr Robinson as a kid I'm art class and he would make paintings with such astraxt use of colors it pretty much inspired me to pursue art as a hobby.
The use of colors that you wouldmt think would "fit" he would make fit.
After this lesson I realized he DID ALOT of greyish tones to the colors and now I got my AHHA moment
'Literal drawing and abstract use of colour'. Man that is the exact style of painting I want to do. I remember in one of your other videos you said make sure the values are right, the colour is less important. That's so true. I love landscape paintings where there's lot's of wrong colours everywhere but it just works. Volka does some great portraits using that method.
Probably the most important thing I've learnt from watching your videos is - grey is your ally. You explained it really well how to cross the colour wheel via the greys.
PS your paintings are amazing!
I love your abstract style, and this video really explains a lot.
I'm so glad you are back! Can't wait to see what comes in the future!
This is hands down one of the best videos I have ever watched on RUclips. Firstly, I adore your style. The sheer freedom of colour and expression is so endearing and the subject matter always intrigues me and gets me inspired. Secondly, you have completely changed the way that I look at art, and hopefully in the future I will have the confidence and ability to be as expressive and creative as you are.
Thanks a lot, Reece!
So glad I came across your video! Can't wait to practice your technique! Thanks Marco!
WOW! the content in this video alone is so huge! im so blessed to discover you channel.....it is so liberating to hear your words of wisdom! thank you! hope you have more students soon!
Thank you, Marco! Learned so much with the few, but very good, videos. Much appreciated.
Can I just say how thankful I am that you made this channel and your tutorials, materials and everything. I am working very hard on my portfolio for Gobelins school for animation in Paris and I've seen the same old videos on Concept Art and all other generic tutors. I just find those videos redundant and not really engaging. So you can image my happiness, when I stumbled on your videos when scrolling through color theory and as I clicked on this video I could not help but feel so inspired to learn to learn more! Of course it helps that your work is incredible and unique, for someone aims to do the same I appreciate your efforts - please continue making videos because I just subscribed in a heartbeat haha😂! Best Regards Pascal
Thank you, you're the master, just what needed to learn to get me further on into this painting adventure.
Thanks for posting this, it was really helpful! I'm working on a painting right now and I'm pumped to use some of those techniques you mention. I like to leave the lines of my drawing in but want to combine that with a more painterly approach so it'll be fun to experiment with.
It feels like a revelation, really inspired to me for a digital painting I am going to start right now with a 7 hours deadline. This video and others like Understanding Colors by Blender Guru make it clear for me. Thank you :)
i think your use of color is pretty amazing...I enjoy your work!
Epiphany! Colour is abstract it really is. Thank you for sharing
Holy shit you really helped me! I wanted to express myself in my paintings but I didn't know how.
This is one of the best painting tutorials i ever saw. Thank you! :)
i love your style very much, I really like the abstract sort of backgrounds... I want to aspire to this sort of style, too, but with my own expression, obviously
I really love the way you splat colors everywhere for abstract detail
Great tips nice to have you back!!!!!
Very glad you're back !!
Great lesson, thanks for doing your series of tutorials
Russell Alderton thanks for watching!
I think you definitely have one of the most useful tips on color theory that I've encountered on youtube. I love your videos. They really helped me improve my painting. I hope to see more :D
Dude707LoL thanks a lot! I am actually working on my next RUclips video right now, and it’s kind of an expansion of this lesson. Should be out next week - stay tuned!
awesome. I can't wait :D
That's awesome, I will be anxiously waiting for it. Thanks for you sharing your precious knowledge with us.
I seriously love this video! Such great examples and explanations. Thank you
I'm falling in love with colors even more
Love ur approach
I love your use of color. I just ran across your video today. Your style is very unique.
Brilliant video, thanks. I've always been a little afraid of color, this loosened that feeling a bit for me.
Thank you for this video - this is exactly the information ive been struggling with
i'm speechless. definitely my fav artist on youtube
I'm looooooving your videos so much!!
Your work is absolutely inspiring, Marco, what an interesting style and approach to painting. It's interesting to see how much thought you put into colour. I do think your aesthetic is much better than overly blended "air brushed" pieces.
Welcome back, Marco. I have missed your demos.
Awesome tutorial! Can't wait to see some more!
Muy útil información expuesta de una manera simple y clara, me encantan tus pinturas me encanta la forma en que armonizas tus colores... muchas gracias!!!
Thank you for sharing. This is a great video. Very helpful. You're also good at teaching.
Yesterday I coloured a piece before and then again after this video of yours-
two different worlds.
😂
Colour has always been my weak spot, and I was always super cautious almost timid about what colours to use and ended up with really monotonous outcomes. Thank you so much for this, yesterday for the first time in my life, I was brave with using colours, and my painting gain a massive hint of life. ❤️
This gray transitions is a cool idea! I've just recently noticed myself that in the transition areas the color goes to more gray, but now I understand why! Thank you!
thanks for watching :)
7:28 I think the word your searching for is garish. Excellent video! I stumbled on your blog a while ago and started following your art. I was impressed by your use of color. Great to see you made a video about it!
I finally found the video I've been searching for. Epiphany. Thank you Marco.
i don't even paint but all the concepts you have discussed in this video i can relate to what i do which is create music. I will definitely apply these new concepts to what i do, thanks.
This video this fabulous, thanks so much for sharing! I need to watch 3 times!
This is fantastic, definitely going to apply this to my paintings.
Amazing. I just learned so much from this. You're outstanding.
Hi Marco,
excellent class .. i enjoy a lot!
Congrats.
Nice to see you back! This was a great watch! :D
this video is a hidden gem..looking at the color at 12:44..it's just so beautiful...after watching so many other videos, this is the best solution for colour transitioning..
Nice stuff Marco, I appreciate these videos!
hey thanks Gavin!
The last illustration was extremely inspiring.
Use color abstractly and transition warm to cool using greys. I learned 2 new things today. And now I have to go play with those!
OMG you're back! Thanks for the video!
Thank u for coming back :)
thank you for this video. I've been struggling with how to play with colour changes and your explanation really helps. :D
Marco ! This one is awesome tutorial, Love it..
Simply fantastic!
