Thank you! I was just studying edges today for my painting course and having a hard time understainding firm edges specially. Your explanation is perfect as always!
Man. You. Are. A. God. This is so clear and concise. And - taking into account that I'm not a native speaker - I don't even need subtitles to understand what you're saying. This is amazing.
I really love the way you paint that small, textured detail atop your painting. It makes me think it’s just been raining and I’m looking out at the city from a window with a few raindrops, scratches, etc, on it that are super in focus with the background being a little less defined and it’s so beautiful, I reallllyyy love it and the feeling it creates,
Is it a way to objectify the artist to make it understandable to the masses or is it a graphical education of understanding the colors and forms made by artists? Can you do with abstract art as well or only traditional paintings and photography?
What a great video! I have phased in and out of painting and drawing thoughout my life so not striving to be a painter or so, but this video teached me to simply look at art in a very new light! Thank you so much!
Thank you so much for your work! I just wanted to say, i made so much progress in painting and finally understood some stuff about shapes, colors and values that i kept hearing about, but could never quite wrap my head around... all because of your channel! you are so good at explaining
Thankyou very much Marco! I just started learning painting and this topic really helped a lot, all of your videos are so helpful and I'm inspired by every art you produce as it resembles the masters of the past. THANKYOU MAN, YOU'RE A LEGEND!
Your contents always blow me away. You teach me so much stuff without ever making me confused. It's so clear yet so jam packed with information. Thank you!
Any chance you could make a video like this but with charcoal/pencil soft/hard edges? Has cleared up some issues I've had, but I would love to see it in other mediums!
Thank you very much for your video. I learned a lot from your video, especially if you combined a painting with concrete descriptions of painting principles and theories, and made me understand how painting theories I have seen in the past should be used in my paintings. Thanks again. What kind of software do you use for digital painting?
Is applying these rules er techniques (especially the lost edge) contradicts on my learning to draw everything or do i yet need to be able to have a decent visual library before i apply these. Im confused!! Someone help(sorry for bad english)
i just want to ask how is this video free? I mean there's a lot for beginners to get from this video compare to how other art youtubers does. seriously...
Just had to say that this was a kind of eyeopener to me. You've got a talent to compress solid knowledge into 20 minutes of highly informative education. Coming from a linedrawing background and struggling with a painterly approach this was a great lesson to me - I now realize how I can transcend techniques and ideas from linedrawing to painting. Thanks and chapeau!
Man I can really relate to your comment. I come from a more comic-manga background where the line is the main tool but I also happen to love the painterly style and Marco just put into really understandable words the thing that I was never been able to comprehend about paintings. Even though i knew the terminology of edges I never understood the intentionally behind them neither the brush choice criteria
This! Sometimes Marco will say something small that's such a massive eyeopener. Personally, the idea of doing master studies specifically for things like edges and values blew me away, mostly because I spent many years of my artistic development in an environment where photographic references were the only permitted ones. I have always struggled with sliding into photorealism or no longer enjoying painting at all. It was instantly so obvious why when Marco suggested master studies before photo references... Thank goodness for youtube creative content creators!
This video was a revelation to me. I struggled for so long to understand what exactly speedpainters are doing and all my art colleagues didn't want to help or show me how it was done, because they were afraid someone else could steal their jobs. Guys like you deserve a crown to share important knowledge like that!
Yeah, I've actually never painted that much in all of my life, so it's quite still a mystery how most artists are able to make the colors magically look realistic. I didn't really know anyone who could explain these things to me, but this channel really helps a lot!
The more of your videos I watch, the more I realise I how much I need to learn. I’ve always thought I was alright at drawing because I can draw a cat and it looks like a cat. Didn’t realise how much of a balancing act art is. Really looking forward to trying this out. Thanks so much for the videos. Happily watching them all, awed by your paintings and can’t wait to improve.
You know this video has made me feel so much better about painting. Honestly, its so hard for me to paint usually because we always talk about detail and adding in more and more detail. The thought that you can loose some of that detail where it isn't important and still come up with something good and reassuring. Its the hardest part of landscapes for me cuz I think everything has to be hyper detailed and perfect and I overwork everything. Thank you.
Wow, this was so interesting to watch! Thank you for this video. I feel I learnt so much new things, even though I've got so many years of art academy in the pocket.
When I try ‘hidden object’ games, they usually drive me crazy because most often there are only hard edges through the entire image you are searching. Thanks Marco for all of the wonderful insights!
ah, this was a great video! i really like how you had a solid and actual beginners exercise. i find a lot of great videos about different art principles but theyre are always geared towards such insane experienced applications that i never actually get to properly use whatever concept they were showing in the video
Over the past two years I’ve been drawing a 200 page graphic novel. During those two years of working in ink on paper, I’ve been watching your videos over and over. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve had those “Eureka” moments that made so many concepts that were so perplexing to me just click. Even though I’ve been working in black and white for two years, I’ve learned more about color/painting/digital painting from your videos than in the last 10 years I’ve been making comics. Just wanted to say thanks.
Marco, I, and I'm sure others, really appreciate your clear, concise articulation and instruction. So fun to watch your skill then try some of your exercises. Also, your advanced video production skills haven't gone unnoticed!
on the image at 2:50, i actually focused more on the legs (soft edges) than on the shoulder & hair (hard edges) sldkfjsdl maybe im just weird but it drew my eye more with the deep shadow
I’m late to this video, but thank you for explaining the edges. I could only be dazed seeing artist drawing backgrounds that look so real, yet simple when you zoom in, never realizing they apply edges. With this knowledge I can finally step up my work
